I am particularly sad to see the closingof Richmond Gallery in Marblehead.Ben and Wendy accomplished so muchin their 30 years here. Ben’s paintings be-

came a sensation in the 1980s and his arthas become timeless. Their little gallery became such a magnet, that many smallretail entrepreneurs followed them to the

Village of Marblehead, which becamea very successful artistic and retail con-clave. We wish Ben and Wendy nothingbut the best in retirement.

Responsible

developmentC.O.R.D. is responding to a recent

letter in the Beacon, Feb. 2, concern-ing development in Port Clinton. Yes,Port Clinton needs economic devel-opment. Given our county’s presenteconomic situation, what community

doesn’t?Important as development is, a

planned, varied, cautious approachis needed. If not, costly mistakes willbe made. As an example we point tothe Puller Project. For those that needa reminder read the Beacon’s article“Puller Pulls Out” (April 17, 2008)and the News Herald article of April21, 2008 “Puller: City Keeps Chang-ing Everything.” Thousands andthousands of dollars were misspent.

The city must have different typesof development from retail to recre-ational, from educational to industri-al. A varied approach allows econom-ic balance within the community to

exist. The city must also consider the lo-

cation of the development project, the restrictions of that location, andthe cost to meet those restrictions. If

not, time, money, and opportunity will be wasted.

When the appropriate project doespresent itself, will the city have thenances to take advantage of that op-portunity if this misspending is con-tinued?

Trafc pleaI wish to write an open letter to

ODOT, Danbury and Catawba town-ships, Ottawa County Departmentof Engineering and safety directorsabout a near-death experience at theMcDonald’s at Ohio 163 and 53.

While I’m grateful for the im-provements, they seem to have againavoided the entrance and exit of Mc-Donald’s. It is my wish that the samedesign is used there that was used forthe entrance to the Huntington Bank:only a south-bound entrance and asouth-bound exit.

I was south-bound and in the rightturn lane just as I have done for thelast 30-plus. This day was different– my speed approx. 20 mph. Trafc

was heavy on all directions, I had thearrow for the right turn but the twolanes, straight and the left turn onto163 west was held by a red light.

Two very courteous drivers justhappen to be side by side and pro-vided a space before them for a ve-hicle to pass into McDonald’s. Thevehicles were not lined up real perfect

and blocking my view of that smallopening, when a vehicle did happento pass through in front. That drivermight not have known there was an-other lane, the one I was in and whenI saw him and hit the brake, I was allbraced and really thought for a mo-ment I hit him broadside. I still donot know how I avoided any contact.

That really opened to eyes and I hadto park in the rst drive I passed togather myself. I pray everyone thatreads this please join me: that drivehas to be closed to cross trafc.

There is another entrance that issafe off of 163 and also a much saferexit onto 163 for north-bound. No-

body is put out.I beg every Catawba Island residentto support my purpose, including theowner of McDonald’s.

Bill MillerCatawba Island

ams and Ray Fogg.“One thing you’ll hear exclusively on WPIB are those

island entertainers that are regular draws to Put-in-Bay,”

Peiffer said. “In fact, Bob Gatewood will even have his ownone-hour show featuring interviews and music from allthe bands and performers that appear here on the Island.”

Another specialty program will be more serious, with lo-cal island resident Patrick Meyers as host.

“Patrick will talk about the inner workings of govern-ment, schools and the other islands and have full-timeresidents as guests,” Peiffer said.

One face that will become familiar is that of Dorothy Henry who is WPCR and WPIB’s Sales Manager. Dorothy has already contacted several businesses getting them on-board with radio commercials, web banners and programsponsorships.

The new radio station is all about community and posi-tive news and certainly its operation on the mainland istestament to that. WPCR received the Lighthouse Awardfor Outstanding Community Service just last year fromthe Port Clinton Chamber. Peiffer said he wants WPIB toget involved with every community organization on theIsland and encourages them to send news releases anditems about their events to [email protected].

“When you need some good, positive publicity aboutanything and everything happening here in the islands, please make sure you let us know. WPIB is here to servethe community,” Peiffer said.

March 10th - St. Patt y’s DayWine Tast ing 4 - 6 p.m. March is National Colorectal Awareness Month and ev-

ery Monday through Friday this month, Magruder Hos-pital will have ree take-home colorectal health screening

kits available rom 9 a.m. to

3 p.m. in the main lobby o the hospital. This is beingoered to increase aware-ness and early detection o disease. According to Dr.Panju Prithviraj, Medi-cal Director o Magruder’sOncology Clinic, colorectalcancer is a preventable typeo cancer.

“Unlike some other can-cers, colorectal cancer, by ollowing certain guide-lines, is quite preventableand is a cancer that canbe detected early throughscreening. This leads to di-

agnosis o early stages o colorectal cancers and thereby decreases chances o recurrence with high chances o acure. Prevention and early detection can go a long way to-ward changing these numbers. When detected early and

treated promptly, cancer o the colon and rectum is oneo the most treatable and curable orms o the disease,”said Prithviraj.

Beginning at age 50, men and women who are at averagerisk or developing colorectal cancer should begin screen-ing. Screening can result in the detection and removal o colorectal polyps beore they become cancerous, as well asthe detection o cancer that is at an early stage.

The take home kits are a basic screen or blood in thestool, which could be a sign o several colorectal healthissues. A colonoscopy, which is an outpatient screeningprocedure, is more widely accepted as the screening thatis most eective or early detection o colorectal polypsand cancer.

For inormation on the colorectal health screening kits, call Rachel Fall, Magruder Manager o Community Out-reach & Development, at 419-732-4061.

A Taize Prayer Service is planned at 7p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Peach LutheranChurch.

Taize is a prayer service of quiet medita-tion, reection, scripture and prayers, spo-ken and sung. The Taize — pronouncedteh-ZAY — tradition began in 1940 in anecumenical monastic community in theFrench village of Taize. The music is a dis-tinctive part of the service, written to allowfor participation by a multi-lingual con-gregation without hymnals. The hymnsare brief, simple and repeated many timesin order that the words may descend fromour lips to our hearts.

The service is paced slowly and designedto quiet our minds and souls to makewithin us a place where the Holy Spirit

may dwell, and God’s voice heard. This isdifcult in our multi-media society that isaccustomed to the television, cable, com-

puters, instant messaging, Facebook, Twit-ter, Pinterest, texting, cell phones/smartphones/iPhones, iPods and iPads. TheTaize service offers an opportunity slowdown, quiet our minds and hearts, relax, settle our nerves, and allow God’s strengthto ow quietly into us.

This Lenten prayer service will be lead by Rev. Robert Butcher, retired pastor emeri-tus of Firelands Presbytherian Church, and Gregory Fox, retired choral director.Peace Lutheran Church, Rev. Mike Wiech-ers, pastor, has offered their worship spacefor this ecumenical service.

Coaching girls: It’s dierent thancoaching boys. I’ve waited a longtime to write about this because male

coaches (and some emale) tend tobe skeptical about my observations.I will plunge ahead anyway, becauseduring 21 years o coaching girls atthe high school level, I experiencedthe same unique issues, year ater

year. Please understand that notevery girl reacts the same way to allsituations, but the patterns are pretty common. My goal in letting mysel in or all the protests I will receive, isto get parents and coaches to realizegirls and boys are dierent (duh)and need to be coached with the di-erences in mind.

My frst piece o advice whenaddressing coaches o girls’ teams

is that they should “Stock up on ant-acids.” That’s when I begin to get thepuzzled looks rom the new coachesin my audience. The experiencedcoaches, however, begin to chuckleand nod. They know what I’m talk-ing about. One ellow, who had a loto coaching experience with bothboys and girls teams, complainedthat, “someone is always crying.”

Yep. Girls may cry when they’rehappy, when they’re sad, when they lose or when they win. Neither yell-ing at them nor being nice to themwill do much to stem the tide o tears. Handling the emotional swingso young emale athletes is a very

real part o a coach’s job; and it’snot an easy one. Most o us know alot about the sport itsel but not so

much about how to channel emo-tions into helping a player succeed.

I’ll give just a ew examples in how

girls react dierently to competitionand coaching than boys do. Girls willoverreact to criticism and may be-lieve everything you tell them to dodierently is criticism. They’re very araid o making mistakes. Hearingcheers rom ans may make themnervous rather than determined.Coaches must spend a lot o timeteaching girls that mistakes are OKand how to handle adversity.

Competition is hard or many girls.Girls want to be liked and popular.Aggressively trying to beat someonegoes against the “rules” or becomingpopular, and that especially makescompeting against a teammate very uncomortable. Be careul aboutarranging challenge matches o any kind. The allout o hard eelings canshow up and aect teamwork or therest o the season. Coaches must pay attention to helping girls understandthey can still be liked and respectedwhile competing well.

Girls need to be taught what itmeans to be a team player. Gossipand cliques are big problems. Girlswill oten ostracize the stars. Teamdynamics can be wrecked i dissen-sion breaks out between players.Generally, it is not as important togirls to win as it is to be liked andpopular. You have a big problem i one o your players gets dumpedby her boyriend at lunch. She will

bring all those emotions to practiceor the game. Heaven help you i thatboy starts dating someone else on

your team! The main priority o most emale

athletes is to not be embarrassed! That priority helps them be receptiveto trying to improve. They will listento advice (as long as it doesn’t soundlike criticism) and try really hardin practice. Unortunately, embar-rassment is also gets in the way o winning, as they may be more araido looking bad than losing. Fearcan mess with their eort duringcompetition. A bad hair day, an ugly uniorm or a big error can all diverther attention rom competing well.Be sensitive to this.

Yes, there emotional issues to dealwith in coaching girls. Hang in there. It can be the most rewarding job

you’ve ever had. You just have to usewhat you know about dierences tohelp your players. My biggest thrillin coaching was to watch emotional, nervous, tentative reshmen girlsgrow into strong, confdent, resilient

young women as graduates. Girlswho play or the love o the sport areso much un. They need understand-ing and caring coaches. Be one.
