’m humbled by my eighth-grade stu-dents. These bright, cheery faces gazeat me daily waiting for me to push, pull, and extract all I can from themand WOW — do they deliver!
Recently while working on poetry, Iasked students to submit their best workfor publication. I’ve been harping onthem that poetry is all about passion andwhat they’re familiarwith while commu-nicating their emo-tions.
As an “old lady”I’ve lived such aroller coaster ofhighs and lows that Ifool myself intobelieving that mystudents are juststarting this wholebusiness of life —but their prose com-municates other-wise!
I won’t go into histories or how theyfound their inspiration; I’ll let their wordsspeak for themselves!
Her leathery skin was stretched tightlyfrom ear to ear.
Several teeth were absent from hergums.
Bottomless, hollow black eyes rested
above her crooked nose. The woman mocked me with horrible
silence.Her eyes without a soul
behind them, bored into myown.
I felt my essence shrivelup and cry for mercy.
That silence, such sicken-ing silence, echoed through-out my bones.
But I could not cry, no, myvoice had failed me,
Oxygen refusing to bathe my lungs withbreath,
A suffocation so silent yet so cruel, Surely I did not deserve such agony! My soul, the only light, although flicker-
ing and damaged in the inky darkness,Began to detach itself from my being. Those oily eyes swallowed my will to
fight the never ending suffering. The old woman stood motionless, and
smiled slightly.By Madeline Michael

America the Brave No one saw it coming, it
all happened so fastThe people, the planes,
the buildings never meantto crash.
For this horrible day, only few are to be
blamed,This 9-11 tragedy, terrorists hold the
fame.
While our buildings may have weak-ened, our country then grew strong
On this day we came together, like weshould have all along.
Twin towers that have fallen, only proveone single thing,
America the Brave came back as Ameri-ca the Fighting.
By Carlie Sandrini
Mom My mom was someone
who …Would never spank me,Loved me with all her heart,Comforted me when I needed it,Let me sleep with her and Dad;Because I was scared.
I remember …She loved sushi,She was very beautiful,She took me to Disneyland,Spent all the time that she could with me;She knew she was going to die.
My mom …
Bought me anything I wanted,Showed me love,Taught me the rights from the wrongs of life,Gave me life;
I miss my mom.By Alexander Vasquez
