’m humbled by my eighth-grade stu- dents. These bright, cheery faces gaze at me daily waiting for me to push, pull, and extract all I can from them and WOW — do they deliver! Recently while working on poetry, I asked students to submit their best work for publication. I’ve been harping on them that poetry is all about passion and what they’re familiar with while commu- nicating their emo- tions. As an “old lady” I’ve lived such a roller coaster of highs and lows that I fool myself into believing that my students are just starting this whole business of life — but their prose com- municates other- wise! I won’t go into histories or how they found their inspiration; I’ll let their words speak for themselves! Her leathery skin was stretched tightly from ear to ear. Several teeth were absent from her gums. Bottomless, hollow black eyes rested above her crooked nose. The woman mocked me with horrible silence. Her eyes without a soul behind them, bored into my own. I felt my essence shrivel up and cry for mercy. That silence, such sicken- ing silence, echoed through- out my bones. But I could not cry, no, my voice had failed me, Oxygen refusing to bathe my lungs with breath, A suffocation so silent yet so cruel, Surely I did not deserve such agony! My soul, the only light, although flicker- ing and damaged in the inky darkness, Began to detach itself from my being. Those oily eyes swallowed my will to fight the never ending suffering. The old woman stood motionless, and smiled slightly. By Madeline Michael Rodgers America the Brave No one saw it coming, it all happened so fast The people, the planes, the buildings never meant to crash.
