nce again, colorful chalkimages from the Via Arté Ital-ian Street Festival 2009 trans-formed The Marketplaceparking areas. I knew the

wonderful fall weather would offer visi-tors the opportunity to enjoy good food, live entertainment and amazing origi-nal art, so I grabbed my family and offwe went. When we arrived, theChesterfield King and the Sultans ofSwing were busy rocking the crowdwith their 40s swing music. All aroundthe fountain area couples were dancingto that driving beat. Even my toes weretapping, but with a torn meniscus Idecided to leave the dancing alone. Theparking area was a sea of color, so weheaded over to enjoy the art. The workis truly amazing, whether it is createdby professional or student.

If you have never been, be sure and

mark it on your calendar for next year.It really is a “MUST SEE.”

A big “THANK YOU” to all the artistsfor their hard work. I think this was thebest festival yet!

Nominated by Mrs. Green’s Class of 2009-10

We nominate Mrs. Veronica Green foreducator of the month. She teaches sixthgrade at Downtown Elementary. Mrs. Greenalways encourages us to do our best.

This year, Mrs. Green told us that we have tobe more responsible students because we’regrowing up. But that helps us learn even moreand get ready for junior high and high school.

We will be going to Camp Keep this monthwith Mrs. Green — we know it will be fun!Thank you, Mrs. Green, for all you do!

Nominated by Guadalupe Hernández

Educator of the Month

I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!

To submit your nominee for Educator of the Month, go to: www.northwest voice.com then click on “Post Something!” and contribute a

paragraph about why you appreciate and would like to recognize your nominee. Be sure to include the educator’s name, school, department and picture. The contest is open to

educators in the Southwest area. Entries can also be e-mailed to: [email protected]. Each month the winning entry $50 gift certificate,

compliments of GW School Supply and The Northwest Voice.

ometimes when my kids comehome with a story aboutschool I think, “I must bemissing something!” Chancesare, I am. Through the years, I

have found myself calling or emailingteachers to get the direct scoop.Recently, my youngest broke her legand missed lots of school and whileshe is in high school, I still keep intouch with her teachers. I certainlydon’t smother, but I do want to keepmy fingers on the pulse of what’sgoing on.

From a teacher’s perspective, Iwould much rather know if somethingis amiss at home. Whether they arehealth issues, emotional issues, or lifechanges, I find I’m a much more com-passionate teacher when I am awareof upheaval. We teachers can alsohelp prioritize work if absencesbecome a problem.

Raising children brings about chal-lenges and there may be times we justmight be able to help. We have stu-dent action teams that involve a groupof teachers, a counselor, administra-

tor, and even ahealth profession-al, if needed. Wealso have fabu-lous resourcesincluding parenttraining, books, and potentiallyreferrals toorganizations.

I’ve beenaccused of hover-ing — a collegeprofessor told methat when I wastouring a campuswith my 18-year-

old — but I’d rather hover than missan opportunity to help my childthrough a difficult time. If a parentneeds help with a child, school per-sonnel just might have a solution, know how to find one, or provide acompassionate ear or two!

he state of the economyremains a red-hot topic. Agree-ing on reasons for the 2008 mar-ket collapse and effects of thesubsequent bailout will keep

economists and politicians busy foryears.

Mark A. Martinez, California StateUniversity, Bakersfield political sci-ence professor and radio talk showhost, tackles the topic in his new book“The Myth of the Free Market.”

“By looking at history, it is possible tosee that political processes and thestate are not only instrumental in mak-ing capitalist markets work, but thatthere would be no capitalist markets orwealth creation without state interven-tion,” Martinez said. “The book is agood introduction to comparative eco-nomic systems in a way that is veryaccessible to those who may be new tostudying economies.”

The book refutes standard mantras offree market economic theory by show-ing how capitalist economies developedand why the state matters in their func-tioning. The book, released in March byKumarian Press, has received highpraise and is consistently ranked in thetop 100 in three different sales cate-gories on Amazon.com.

Ha-Joon Chang from the Universityof Cambridge noted,“Mark Martinezforces us to re-examine the myth of the‘natural’ free market order. Using very

intelligently a wide range of fascinatinghistorical and contemporary examples,he takes us through many importanteconomic, political, and philosophicalreflections about the true nature of themarket system and its important butlimited role in the construction of a civ-ilized society.”

“The Myth of the Free Market” isavailable locally at Russo’s Books in theMarketplace, Borders, Barnes andNoble, and through Amazon.com.

crossed the Ocean for a heart ofgold! — as the song goes and, aswell as finding a heart of gold (wegot married) I found three greatBakersfield musicians.

I play bagpipes, Uilleann pipes, pen-ny whistles, and am steeped in theCeltic tradition of Irish and Scotsmusic. I served in the Scots Guards, performed at many venues around theworld, plus performed for the Queen ofEngland at Buckingham Palace duringstate and presidential visits. I also per-formed at many folk and traditional fes-tivals, Highland Scottish games andCeltic Festivals.

My late wife died of cancer about sixyears ago, and my sister lives in Bak-ersfield, so I decided to travel fromBritain to visit her, and met and fell inlove with my present wife, DiSheree. Istarted a traditional music session inMcMurphy’s Bar, then opened one inRiley’s Tavern downtown, and now it isbeing held in Dagney’s Cafe, downtownevery Wednesday evening.

But my heart was also in creating amore “rocky” Celtic sound. I met Wal-ter Baldwin, (drums) Dougie Kirk,(Bass) and Richard Cheney (Voice,

electric guitars) and to our amazement,a new kind of sound emerged. I call it“Celtic Evolution,” a blend of modernrock and traditional Celtic musicwhereby the bagpipes sometimes playthe “lead” in some of the original songsand tunes. We called the band, 1916,after the Dublin Uprising at the Gener-al Post Office against the British Army,in April 1916.

Bog Iron, (from Monterey) 1916, andWhiskey Galore will be performing atFishlips. Bog Iron are on tour and werevery pleased to put Bakersfield on theiragenda. This is the first time threeCeltic bands have played together atFishlips, (even in Bakersfield) so itshould be a fantastic night of varyingstyles of music and great craic! (fun).

It should be an interesting night forthe band and fans, too; some competi-tive spirit will be flowing that night, astoo will the other kind of spirit.

ICelts battle for gold!

As we help one another and encour-age one another, we both pollinate andare pollinated. As we feast on His Wordand apply it to our lives, we are polli-

nated and pollinate. As we take everyopportunity given us to honor Him withour lives, we pollinate and are pollinat-ed. However, just as that bee which hasstung can never pollinate againbecause he will soon die … we do notreceive His salvation and goodness andkeep it to ourselves. Rather, we acceptit and pass it along in our joy and com-passion for one another. Of course, onecan accept salvation and be done withit. But who wants to be a dead bee whenwe can share in the pollination of abeautiful world?

“... because anyone who serves Christin this way is pleasing to God andapproved by men. Let us thereforemake every effort to do what leads topeace and mutual edification.” Romans14:18-19
