A Message from the Editor

What wonderful times we’re having this summer at Incarnation! Our parish is buzzing with life — mission trips to Honduras and Belize, summer camps and road trips for our student ministries, and many other activities, are the calling-cards of a growing family!

Th eology Live: Ale & the Almighty is one such activity. It has been occuring each Monday night in June, at the Ginger Man Pub — for 12 years straight! I have now been involved with it for six years, and am blown away by the continued success of this ministry. As you can see in the photo at right, we were packed to the gills, and have been for years.

Th e Th eology Live team works hard year aft er year to bring this event to fruition—and each year we receive comments of how outside the box it is to meet people where they are, as many in attendance might not ever darken the doors of a church.

Th at’s the goal. To engage people with hot topics of conversation, working pre-evangelistcally to show them more of who we, and to know them in return.

Th is year especially, I was fortunate to spend time talking with groups from other churches who have had thoughts of this type of covert ministry. I am thankful to see the fruits of our labor and passion, as this parish pours itself into the community—we’re changing lives!

stewingonstewardship

by Jim Rain

At the outset, we want to share some very good news about our annual giving campaign for 2012. We

are very pleased to report that we reversed a 4-year trend of declining numbers of households that submitted a pledge and experienced an 11% increase over 2011. Just a few fruits that have been nurtured by your faithful monetary support of God’s work at the Church of the Incarnation include the addition of Fr. Hill to head our pastoral care ministries, the repair and improvement of our sidewalks in front of the Church, our Lenten Parish Night with Dr. Jim Denison, and our fi rst Disciple Now weekend for our middle school kids.

It’s clear that the annual giving part of stewardship is a fun-damental component of the stewardship committee’s role, as it always has been. But we also believe that stewardship encompasses more than a once-a-year focus. Th at’s why the “standing” part of the standing commit-tee is important because it underscores that the committee’s mandate does not begin and end with the annual giving campaign each fall.

To be honest, though, the committee is in the midst of discerning what else might be included in God’s vision for year-round stewardship. To that end, we will be learning, praying, and thinking about forms of stewardship that are woven into the fabric of our year-round church life. We’ll be “stewing on steward-ship,” and, from time to time, we’ll share with you in Th e Angelus what we’re learning and how it might be applied in our individual and communal lives.

One place to start in thinking about stewardship is with the word itself. Th e word “steward” comes from two old Eng-lish words. Th e fi rst word, “styw,” meant “hall” or “house”

Last summer, Bishop Burton appointed a standing committee on stewardship. Th e current committee members are Bill Ward, Chair, David Aughinbaugh, Michelle Cox, Kathy Boyett, Michael Fahrenbrook, Nancy Gienger, Gay Hayslett, Liz Johnson, David Krause, Ellen McDowell, Fr. Greg Methvin, Keith Quarterman, Jim Rain, and Andy Welch, Senior Warden. Th is article is the fi rst of what we expect to be regular communications from this committee.

STEWARDSHIP con’t pg 12

(and before that, denoted a word for any type of enclosure – a meaning that survives as our word “sty,” as in “pigsty”). Th e second word, “ward” or “warden,” meant a “keeper” or “protector.” Of course, we still use the word “warden” in much the same sense in the Episcopal Church. (However, we won’t speculate whether our Wardens sometimes feel as though they’re trying to look aft er a herd of enclosed, uncooperative farm animals.)

Th us, stewardship can be seen as the act of looking aft er a house. Crucially, however, the house does not belong to the steward. Th e steward looks aft er it for someone else – the owner. A good steward is keenly aware that the property he has charge over is not his own; he only holds it in safekeeping for his master.

Viewing ourselves as stewards of God’s creation suggests at least two things. First, we don’t need to worry so much about what we “own,” because we don’t really own it. It’s God’s, not ours. “All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee.” Th at re-alization can be wonderfully liberating. It means we can relax our grip a little. Turn down some of the anxiety. Breathe and be ourselves.

Second, we know that God doesn’t need us to manage his creation for Him. He can do that just fi ne Himself, thanks. So maybe God has other reasons for

trusting us as his stewards. As with most things of God, we think one reason is grounded in the relationship God wants us to have with Him.

Most of us have experienced the deep sense of responsibil-ity that comes from looking aft er someone else’s property.

37 adults traveled safely to Honduras, giving their time to share Christ’s love with the people of La Laguna

and San Matias Episcopal Mission Church.

Th e team consisted of 24 women and 13 men, with an age range of early twenties through late sixties. Some of the team members are fl uent in Spanish, some have no Spanish speaking skills at all—but all shared abiding faith and tremendous heart! Th is team made Incarnation proud!!

Well over 400 Hondurans walked many miles each day to seek help at Incarnation’s medical/dental/pharmacy clinic, which was set up in the tiny San Matias Church. In addition to the hundreds of necessary tooth extractions, our dental team was pleased to be able to give many children fl uoride treatments. Our well-stocked pharmacy included thousands of vitamins to dispense in an eff ort to help improve the overall health of the people. Regular ongoing medical services are not available in this remote mountainous community.

Scott DettraF or the last fi ve years Mr. Dettra has been Principle Organist at Washington National Cathedral. August 13, he will

become the next Choirmaster and Director of Incarnation’s traditional music program.

Widely considered a rising star in the organ and church-music fi eld, Scott is also keyboard artist for the Washington Bach Consort and organist of The Crossing, Philadelphia’s new-music choir. He concertizes internationally under Karen McFarlane Artists management and records CDs on the Pro Organo and Loft labels. He and his wife, Haley, a native of Abilene, are devoted Episcopalians, and look forward to being active in Incarnation’s parish life. In addition to play-ing over 350 services a year at the National Cathedral, he is also the Associate Director of Music in their multifaceted music program.

“He was a splendid colleague and friend in Washington, and just one of the best musicians you will ever meet,” says Mark Dwyer, organist and choirmaster of Church of the Advent in Boston, and before that Scott’s boss at St. Paul’s, K Street in Washington. Charlotte Woolley, former section leader in the Incarnation Chancel Choir, now singing in Washington, says, “You couldn’t have done better. He’s an impeccable musician and an absolute world-class organist.”

A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Scott holds two degrees from Westminster Choir College, and he has studied jazz piano at the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to St. Paul’s, K Street in Washington, he previously held assistantships at St. Mark’s Church, Philadelphia; and Trinity Church, Princeton. His principal teachers have been Joan Lippincott, Dennis Keene and his father, Lee Dettra, who is the former organist and choirmaster of the Cadet Chapel at the U. S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Be sure to tell him hello when you see him!

WELCOME MAC STEWART, DUKE SUMMER INTERN

Mac Stewart, our summer seminary intern from Duke Divinity School, grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, attended UNC-Chapel Hill for col-lege and then switched colors to go to Duke for seminary.

Between college and seminary, he spent a year working as an intern for a small Episcopal church in Boston, MA.  He is a cradle Episcopalian, though he spent some formative years among a few non-denominational campus min-istries while at UNC.  He loves to read (especially theology), play tennis, hike,

STEWARDSHIP con’t fr om pg 5

If your friend asks you to take care of his stuff , you want to do a good job, precisely because your friend has put his trust in you. At least, that’s how the good steward feels – and even more so, when he’s looking aft er his master’s property.

Th e good steward always seeks to know his master’s mind, so the steward can use the property according to his master’s plan. He wants to learn more and more about his master’s intentions.

By deeming us trustworthy to look aft er His creation – by setting up that relationship of trust and love, God cleverly kindles in us a desire to know Him better and to bring us closer to Him. In this sense, thoughtful stewardship isn’t just about time, talent, and treasure. It’s also about how we can use God’s trust in us as a way to know God better and better. And that’s what we’re made for.

We invite the parish to join with us as, with God’s grace, we begin exploring an expanded notion of continual stewardship. We not only welcome your ideas and observations, we’re hungry for them. Please share any ideas you have about the many forms of ongoing stewardship with Fr. Methvin, Bill Ward, or any other stewardship committee members.

and throw the frisbee.  Mac is teach-ing a class this summer on wealth and poverty in the Bible and the Christian Tradition (on Wednesday mornings at 7:30am in the Family Ministries Room), and is delighted to have the chance to spend a summer serving at Incarnation. In an eff ort to make lasting environmental health improvements for these families, our construction team continued our Health Infrastructure program by going into 6 homes to build hygienic latrines, properly vented stoves and pilas to catch rain water for washing. Best of all this was work that we did together with these families to im-prove their homes and enrich our friend-ships. Next summer will be our third year to continue this program.

Our Christian Education team taught over 100 children each day. Th e sounds of music, Bible stories, related games, arts and craft s set a tone of joy for all of us. Th e format was similar to our Vacation Bible School curriculum back home. Th e theme for the week was Champions of Christ. It was particularly rewarding to hear the sounds laughter and happiness from children whose everyday life is so very diffi cult.

Th is isolated community has no source of reliable, uncontaminated water. Last year’s mission team concluded that many of the health issues in the community

are related to lack of suffi cient fresh, clean water. Praise be to God that ours is the kind of parish committed to sharing our resources with our brothers and sisters most in need. On this trip, we set out to drill for potable water. Th ough our drilling eff orts have yet to fi nd a suffi cient water source, we plan to return soon and drill at a more promising site. Our search contin-ues and we will not be deterred. We feel certain that God is calling us to this quest.

14 THE ANGELUS | JULY-AUGUST 2012

We are blessed, here in our family parish, with wonderful and talented clergy, whose passions are for ministering and aff ecting growth in our lives. But there can be

a downside—they are sometimes called away to lead other posts!

So it is with Fr. Th omas Kincaid, who leaves us in August to be Priest-in-Charge for two small churches in rural Indiana, east of Chicago: St. Paul’s in downtown La Porte, and St. Frances, Chesterton. Th e

churches are close to the University of Notre Dame where Elisabeth Kincaid, Fr. Th omas’ wife, will start a Ph.D in Th eology in September.

“Th e diffi culty of this decision for me and Elisabeth cannot be overstated”, he said. But they concluded that this was a genuine call. His leadership will be highly valued, as he ministers to the two congregations as their only priest. “Change is never easy,” he said.

When asked about Incarnation, Kincaid replied that it is “a unique and vi-

brant community, blessed with truly excel-lent leadership—it is a joy to minister here with the clergy, alongside so many with singular hearts and passions for ministry. God has many wonderful things in store for our Incarnation family—and I will prayerfully remain its supporter, watching it come to fruition!”

Th ey move in August. Continue to hold Fr. Th omas and Elisabeth in your prayers, and make plans to join us Sunday, July 29, 10:20am, for a joint farewill recep-tion for both Fr. Th omas and Deacon Larsen.

Join us in congratulat-ing Deacon Matthew Larsen on being ac-cepted to a fully funded doctoral position at Yale University! Conver-sations with Bishop

Stanton, Incarnation clergy, and parish members, yielded a strong sense that God

has opened this door and it is “our portion to walk through it.”

Matthew stated, “I believe God is call-ing me to a ministry both pastoral and academic, and this will prove an invaluable time of training while moving towards that goal.” Much like Fr. Th omas, he spoke of the mixed emotions accompanying such

a decision, and that they will “eagerly look forward to staying in touch and seeing the great works that God continues to do at Incarnation.” Please keep them in your prayers, and join us for a special farewell reception July 29. Details above.

PAUL WHEATLEY ORDAINED

On May 31st Bishop Lambert ordained Paul Wheatley as a Deacon here at Incarnation, who will begin work as our newest curate on July 15th. We are very excited that Paul and his wife Catherine will be staying at Incarnation!

Aft er returning from two years in Athens, Greece work-ing with refugees from the Middle East and Greek college students, Paul and Catherine came to Incarnation in 2009 as he began seminary. Paul divided his studies between Dal-las Th eological Seminary and Wycliff e College, in Toronto,

before fi nally graduating from Wycliff e in May. In the meanwhile, Paul served the diocese as the director of the Canterbury ministry at SMU, in addition to 10+ years of ex-perience in ministry to college students.

Paul and Catherine are both native Texans, born in the same hospital in Austin, 362 days apart. Paul grew up in Denton, and Catherine grew up in Austin and Friendswood. Th ey met at the University of Texas at Austin as undergrads, and married in 2006. Catherine teaches 4th grade at Th e Cov-enant School and is starting work on her Masters in Humani-ties at the University of Dallas. When Deacon Paul is not reading Th eology or Early Church Fathers in his free time, he enjoys playing bass guitar and taking walks with Catherine and their two dogs.

Deacon Paul will be continuing the work Deacon Larsen has done with 20s / 30s, Uptown, and the fl edgling arts ministries. Join us in welcoming Deacon Paul as the newest member to our clergy team!

Have you thought about where you will serve this Fall? Do you like having fun at church? Do you enjoy learning? Do you like kids? Why not join us in Children’s ministry? more information. We hope you will join us!!”—We are looking for more volunteers to assist with Godly Play! Godly Play is a Montessori-related method of teaching children the Bible, the Sacraments, prayer and the Church year. It not only helps children to “speak the language” of our Biblical faith tradition, but also to know God and to experience God’s presence in their lives. It employs a discovery method of learning the Bible and the Sacraments, which enables children to meet God through play and language—and engages the whole child—hands, heart, mind, senses and intuition! Godly Play at Incarnation is a true gift we give the children of our parish to learn and claim their faith and to know the kind of connection to the Living Lord of Creation we all yearn for. We hope you will want to learn more about Godly Play and be involved! Please contact Incarnation’s Administrator of Children and Family Ministries, Sheri Crandall at [email protected].
