The Advance The Advance JULY TO DECEMBER 2016

Board Elections and AGM At the AGM in March, a new board was appointed. It has a mix of experienced members and two new members who will bring a fresh perspective. We were sorry to lose Kim Thompson from the board- he was caught up in Singapore and could not get back to Australia in time to lodge his nomination. Others put their hands up and the situation was resolved. Operating profit Penshurst RSL Club is trading well, with April this year experiencing a record trading result. The Board, Management and Staff have continued to maintain a sharp focus on customer service and the results are there for all to see. I intend to maintain this focus in order to avoid the fate of some of the other nearby RSL and bowling clubs. Whilst we continue to make a profit, we can renew our Club and provide better amenities to all our members. Major Renovations to begin In the near future, major renovations will be made to main trading floor. This will entail a complete revamp of the entire level, but done in stages. The contractors are experienced in this field and will try to minimise inconvenience to our members. There will be a brand new outdoor gaming area, the bistro and TAB areas will be moved accordingly and there will be new paint, carpet, furniture and fittings. I am sure our members will be proud of the end result. (Now to get the DA through Council!). Combined ANZAC Dawn Service Penshurst RSL Sub Branch hosted the combined ANZAC dawn service at the war memorial in Bridge Street. Veterans, club members and the general public assembled at dawn under clear skies to attend the service and many then returned to the club for a gunfire breakfast. Police estimated about 3,000 attended the service and Sean and his staff served over 680 breakfasts by 7.30am. The whole operation went seamlessly and all staff are to be commended for their professionalism. Challenges Ahead The first challenge is domestic. The Board and Management need to maintain the focus of achieving the end results set out in our Strategic Plan. The second challenge is local. Hurstville and Kogarah Councils will combine and, in the interim, an Administrator will conduct Council business pending new elections. Our Development Application (DA) is caught up in all of this. The third challenge is political. Some nominees for the Senate in South Australia, if elected may seek to further restrict gaming laws nation-wide. In the words of Donald Rumsfeld, this is a “known unknown”. The Future On present indications, the future of Penshurst RSL Club is very sound. We witness with concern the news of other clubs in financial stress, closing or amalgamating while we go from strength to strength. Thus our thanks are due to our CEO, Chris Hendley, his management team and all the staff at Penshurst RSL who work hard each and every day to optimise outcomes. I feel confident that we will one day achieve our vision: to be the best club in the District.

Chief Executive Officer’s Report

Hello Members, It gives me great pleasure to report to you that your Club has been trading very well this year, so I would like to thank you for your ongoing patronage, and also thank our dedicated team of staff that provide the friendly service that we are known for. The Club has lodged a Development Application with council to perform renovations to the main trading floor, and we are hoping that the approval of this is not too far away. The Board and I will conduct another strategic planning session this year to not only ensure that the short-term planning of your Club is at its optimum, but to also establish strategic long-term planning for the future benefit of Penshurst RSL Club. We have some exciting Entertainment booked for the remainder of the year, which includes the RADIATORS, WHISPERING JACK SHOW, and RENEE GEYER. We will continue to provide the very best entertainment in our area. Please refer to the opposite page for more details. Your club has continued to excel in supporting our local community through the Club Grants funding scheme, so please refer to page 6-9 to view the several groups that we have supported. We value feedback and therefor are conducting a Survey Promotion! For your chance to win an I-pad Pro (valued at $899) simply refer to page 18 for details. We are always looking to improve our service to you, so please let us know if we can improve on anything by simply filling in a Feedback form which is available at the Club, ask to speak to one of our Duty Managers, provide feedback online at [email protected], or write to the CEO Chris Hendley. Finally I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their ongoing support, and look forward to the exciting renovation of the club which should be commencing very soon. See you at the Club!

She started as a sensual blues belter. Now she has evolved into a bona fide music icon—someone to look up to for never having let go of her dreams. This consummate entertainer with a proud body of work still transfixes a room with the power of her song. In 2005 Renee was

inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame; a proud occasion in which she joined the ranks of Australia’s most respected and accomplished musicians. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to see one of Australia’s finest female singers perform in a small, intimate setting at Penshurst RSL.

Thanks to the funding generously provided by Penshurst RSL Club, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT was able to assist four clients within the Hurstville LGA. Clients from Hurstville and Riverwood were all assisted through the “Virtual Tools for Real Independence” project. This project utilises Guide Dogs NSW/ACT’s GPS app which is accessed via an iPhone. The project built upon existing digital skills and capabilities of people with a sensory disability, helping them use mobile

technology to its full potential to enhance their independence, quality of life and participation in the local community. The challenges faced by people with vision impairment need not be a barrier to living an independent life. Training sessions took the form of interactive activities and challenges, for example, asking the participants to use a GPS application to find and explore new and unfamiliar places. The skills clients acquired in the training sessions will stay with them, and will be useful in many aspects of life, including work and social life. This work would not have been possible without the support of the Penshurst RSL Club, for which Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is extremely grateful. If you would like to know more about Guide Dogs NSW/ACT or donate, visit their website: www.guidedogs.com.au

The generous funding provided by Penshurst RSL enabled Nurses On Wheels (NOW) to purchase medical equipment and GPS navigation equipment. We bought a variety of portable blood pressure machines and blood sugar monitors, which means that our nurses can more easily assess our patients and give much needed care in their homes. As a home nursing service NOW uses this equipment to provide free blood pressure monitoring and free blood sugar testing in the local community. We also provided this service to staff and patrons at Penshurst RSL club in April 2016. The GPS navigation equipment helps our nurses reach the patient’s home faster and more efficiently. As we are a charity, funds to buy equipment is always scarce. The support provided by Penshurst RSL for this vital equipment has allowed us to deliver our nursing care to more people in the community than ever before. You can easily access our services by calling us on 9502 3422 from 7am to

6pm. If you would like to know more about Nurses On Wheels, donate to us, volunteer with us, or sign up for our

free newsletter that contains interesting and informative health updates please visit our

Little Wings is a not for profit children's charity that provides free ongoing flight and ground transport to those children and families in need. We help in keeping families together during one of the

toughest times of their lives - and we will continue to do this with the support and generosity of our community of supporters and partners. The funding provided by Penshurst RSL Club has enabled Little Wings to assist 4 seriously ill children and their families from regional NSW in accessing the life saving and specialised medical treatment they require from the Westmead Children's Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and John Hunter Children’s Hospital Newcastle. Funding has covered the variable operational costs associated with the transportation including aviation and motor vehicle fuel, maintenance, insurance and airway fees. The Penshurst RSL Panthers Junior Australian Football Club Incorporated is the longest continually operating junior Australian Rules Football club in Sydney and was established in 1954. Our home Ground is Olds Park Peakhurst and we currently support almost 250 players from Auskick through to Under 17s. The club is managed on a voluntary basis by the parents, carers and community members who put themselves forward annually to join the Committee or take on one of the many jobs that make the year a success. Our Club Patron is Mr Paul Bateman OAM. Our coaches and managers are all volunteers who love the experience of helping our boys and girls develop new skills, friendships and generally have a good time. At the Panthers we pride ourselves on our culture and being a family club. The Panthers compete in the AFL Sydney Juniors - Sydney Harbour Competition. Clubs in this competition range from Heathcote in the South, Manly in the North, Westbrook in the North West and many in between.

We also rely on the support of our sponsors including the Penshurst RSL to maintain and replace equipment and keep registration costs affordable. For several years now we have been able to maintain registration fees with no increase. The support of the RSL last year also assisted us in replacing 2 sets of ageing Guernseys and a purchase new line marking machine. If you are interested in playing or helping please get in contact with us via our Facebook page or the website www.penshurstpanthers.com.au

St George Basketball Association would like to thank our Major Sponsor Penshurst RSL, for their assistance with our local junior and representative programs. With such fantastic support, we have been able to expand our programs and encourage more young people to start playing basketball, and leading healthier lifestyles. St George Basketball runs programs for Learn to Play, from ages 5 and up, through to The Academy, for representative level development and training. The Association also runs school holiday camps for junior players, and hosts an annual 3x3 tournament open to all. Our 2015 Representative program resulted in two teams making the Grand Final and representing the St George area at State Shield competitions. In 2016, we have entered 13 teams in the Basketball NSW Waratah Representative competition, with 11 Junior Teams ranging from Under 12 to Under 18, one Youth League Men and Division One Men’s team. This season, for the first time, we welcomed two women’s

teams, with Under 14 and Under 18 women representing the St George region. We aim to grow our women’s program in the coming years to have representatives at each age group. With so many programs available we hope to be able to welcome Penshurst RSL members to become part of the growing St George Basketball family. All program details are available on website www.stgeorge.basketball.net.au

ST. GEORGE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Penshurst RSL Youth Swim Club is a community based not for profit swim club. We are a volunteer based organisation, teaching water safety and developing the swimming skills of the children of Penshurst RSL Club member families. Our season runs between the months of August to March. Our club has been running for over 50 years, through the ongoing contributions of Penshurst RSL Club. The Swim Club Committee and our Swim Club families are grateful to

Penshurst RSL's financial support . With this support combined with the contribution of our volunteer parents and teachers, we deliver swimming lessons to children from the ages of 4. Our aim to develop the children's confidence and skills in and around the water. In addition to learn to swim, our program also caters for stroke correction and squad swimming classes. We also offer the opportunity for our children to compete against other RSL Youth Clubs across the State. Penshurst RSL Youth Swim Club offers affordable swimming and water safety lessons. Learn to swim and Stroke Development will recommence Saturday September 3rd at 07:30am. Our Squad sessions will start pre season training at 7am Saturday August 6th. More information about Penshurst RSL Youth Swim Club can be found on our website www.penshurstrslyouthswim.com or by emailing: [email protected]. Information is also available on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/penshurstrslyouthswim

Peakhurst Pool was built with funds from the Community. The Peakhurst Pool was opened on the 16th of January 1961. The official opening did not come until the 6th of October 1962. Our wonderful facility is patronised by locals and used by a number of community groups within the region. One of the community groups utilising the pool is the Penshurst RSL Youth Swim Club. As you can appreciate running such a facility takes a lot of dedication as without the pool many would be disadvantaged. If it wasn’t for the Pool Co-Op Executive and Committee the Department Of Education would tear the facility down and be done with it. We receive NO assistance what so ever from the Department. Like all community groups the Co-Operative is run by volunteers who are all committed in keeping the pool operational. The Co-Op approached Penshurst RSL and applied for a Grant to purchase an AED, Automated External Defibrillator. To have received a letter from Penshurst RSL stating that our

application was successful was most encouraging. The AED was purchased and available for when needed. On behalf of the Co-Operative I would like to thank John Hoban and Chris Hendley for their commitment and support and extend to all staff and members of Penshurst RSL our gratitude and thanks.

Some of you may have noticed that unfortunately the PRSLJRLC’s annual report in our last Advance magazine was only part published. We are truly sorry to the PRSLJRLC for this oversight! For those interested in reading this report, we have published it in full below. 2015 has been another very good year for Penshurst RSL JRLFC. For the fourth year in a row, we have won the Junior Club Championship. An amazing achievement for a club that prides itself on getting kids on the park to play a game of footy. That is why we have two sides in most of our junior grades and those sides are graded as evenly as possible. We had 18 sides overall this season. Of that, 6 were playing Mini Footy, 6 were playing Mod Footy and 6 were playing SCC International footy. We had one side in every international age group bar the 17s, which definitely helps in the progression of players through the grades. Our 1st grade and under 13s played in division 1 comps and our under 14s, under 15, under 16s and under 19s all played in division 2 comps . This reflects our policy of always grading teams in divisions to suit their ability to gain maximum development for each player. Our under 12 golds did a great job in qualifying for their grand final, defeating Hurstville in the major semi. Unfortunately they couldn’t repeat the dose in the GF. Later that day at Jubilee, our under 19s were gallant in defeat going down to Bankstown Bulls in their GF. Our under 14s were very gallant in defeat in their GF at Belmore Oval on the Sunday morning. We were all very proud of their efforts throughout the season. 2015 also was a good one for our club at a Representative level. Matthew Dufty has continued to stamp himself as one of the guns in the Holden Cup Dragons outfit. Matty played his first game of footy with the Rissoles back in 2000 as a 4 year old. We also had Pita Polutele, Lewis Hannah and Harris Georgopoulos represent St George

in the Harold Matthews Cup comp (u16s). Harris was awarded with the Coach’s Award for his performances throughout the season. This was a great achievement as Harris was only 14. This leads in to thanking all of our fantastic sponsors. Penshurst RSL Club have been superb for us again and we thank them for their continued support that has run now for 55 seasons. We urge all parents and supporters to become members and support the RSL club that supports us. Mortgage Choice at Oatley, Penshurst Hotel, Professionals Real Estate, Noppen Air, Soil ‘n’Stuff, Charlie Lovatts Peakhurst and Pryde Meats have all been very generous to us and a major part of our on-going success. Again, we urge parents and supporters to support these businesses. We have a great group of coaches, managers and trainers extending all the way through our club. These people look after all players from the youngest player in our under 6s to our veteran 1st graders. Thanks to all of you for keeping us number one in this district. Finally, to all of our 300 odd players that have worn the Green and Gold so proudly this year. You have shown the spirit, fairness and courage that your Green and Gold jersey has meant to so many people before you. Well done. Each and every one of you has been a part of our joint club championships this year and we are proud of, and thankful to, all of you. WHEN SPEAKING OF THE CHAMPIONS……………………….. Dave Cahill Secretary A huge thanks to President Trevor James, his Board of Directors, and Chris Hendley and his staff for the continuation of the 55 years of support that they have given our great club.
