How to Create a Plan That Works

Business-Owner Bob has a vision.


He wants to grow his business,

make money,

add employees,

have an impact on his community.


But no matter how hard he works, he can’t

seem to make it a reality.

operator and there just

aren’t enough hours in the

But where does he start?


Creating a Plan 4 Steps to Creating a Map To Your Destination


1. Set the goal. • Where do you want your business to go? Profitability? Debt free?

Pass it on to your kids? Sell your business for a big profit? • What is that one pressing thing that never gets done?

• Where can value be created? What drives revenue? What drives

your balance sheet?


2. Involve more people. Bring your leadership team

together.

Combine both formal and informal leaders. Titles are checked at the door and everyone has a voice.


• What should next week

look like? Or next month? • Set goals for short time

periods so you can start seeing successes early.

3. Start simple.


4. Identify obstacles. Your job as the

leader is to solve problems.

Identify what they are and

figure out how to fix them.


Time to go to work.

Execute the Plan


1. Analyze your resources.

How is every resource working towards that main goal? If a resource isn’t, fix it.


2. Overcommunicate. There is no

substitute for a clear message.

Make it a part of

the culture.


3. Keep the team focused. Give your team tools to handle the rough patches.

Get “buy-in” and cooperation from everyone –everyone must be on the same page and moving in the same direction.


Accountability is key.

Stick to the Plan


1. Be transparent about the results. Educating people within the organization makes for better employees. Hiding information encourages side chatter that drives distractions.


2. Celebrate successes. Set some interim goals and

celebrate. Buy lunch, have a BBQ, pass out prizes.

Give recognition.


3. Focus often on progress checks. Measure progress, course correct as a group, and challenge assumptions.


When a plan is created, executed, and stuck with, a vision can become a reality.
