Greetings! Since I am writing this before Holy Week and Easter Sunday, I can only say that much work is going into these many worship services. They tell the

Biblical truth of God’s Incarnate Love that is also Crucified Love, Redeeming Love, and Res-urrected Love. This changes everything for the person who by Spirit borne faith is “IN CHRIST”. So even though we worship annually this historic truth, every day of the Christian is one of incarnate, crucified, redeemed, resurrected life and faith! Blessed be the Lord! I have two big take aways from the March 12 day long ‘Call Process and Transition Seminar’ led by Rev. Steve Lien of LCMC. The first take away is my role in the transition. So begin-ning May I will be ‘transitioning’ by clearing out and cleaning out the Pastor’s Office of all my books and personal papers; relocating the Staff Personnel Files to a new cabinet in the office area; assembling a hard copy notebook and e-file of all helpful documents and worship helps that I have created and we have used over the years, so that the church can use them in the future if you want; I will be giving parting suggestions to the action committees, minis-tries and Council - I will be attending less and less as you all take over more and more; I will be working with Council and Worship & Music Committee to plan for more lay leadership in areas of worship. I am sure I will come up with some more transition things to do - or you can suggest some more, as well. My second take away from the Seminar (and talking with Janice, the Call Committee Chair) is that the Call Committee may, or may not have a recommendation to the Congregation for vote before I conclude Sunday, June 26. They are going on Kairos time (God’s time) not Chronos (people’s calendar time). This is good and right. Therefore, most likely the congre-gation will be served by an interim pastor. The extent of weekly duties and length of time is up to the Council and the Lord. But this needs to be anticipated and planned for, and this is a big task, so pray and encourage your Council. On Easter Sunday afternoon Patty and I drive up to San Jose to a park and fly hotel and sneak away to Kuaii in Hawaii. We have a little condo for rest and relaxation, as well as try a little snorkeling. I will be back in the office Monday the 4th. You will be blessed with guest Pastor Matt Kronberg at the SINGLE SERVICE - 10:00 AM - on SUNDAY, APRIL 3. Please wor-ship that second Sunday in the Easter Season and count how many butterflies are still ‘flying’ around the Sanctuary?! (hint about Easter!)

While in the final weeks here of Lent I can see on the horizon the cross and crown! Together In Christ’s Care,

Pastor Randy

Seek YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD & HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS CAUTION

WE HAVE BEEN, STILL ARE AND WILL BE IN A TRANSITION ZONE A WHILE LONGER

SATURDAY, THE CALL COMMITTEE, HOSTED A 6 HOUR WORKSHOP GIVEN BY PASTOR STEVE LIEN; LIAISON FOR PASTORAL CALLS OF LCMS. THE COUNCIL was in-vited as was the Congregation of which only several attended. The workshop was incredibly valuable in opening our minds to

the perils of TRANSITION; such as FEAR, CURIOSITY, EXHAUSTION, LOYALTY, PARANOIA, DEPRESSION, OPTIMISM, RAGE, REVELATION, DELIGHT AND LOVE. THE ABOVE MENTIONED REACTIONS, I FEEL MOST OF HAVE EXPERIENCED AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. THIS IS NOT ANY DIFFERENT WITH THE EXCEP-TION that IT DEALS WITH OUR WORSHIP LIFE WHICH REALLY REALLY MAKES IT NOTEWORTHY. SO WHILE THE CALL COMMITTEE HAS BEEN LABORIOUSLY ENGAGED IN VETTING DOZENS OF CANDIDATES, WE HAVE BEEN UNWITTINGLY (MYSELF INCLUDED) SITTING ON THE SIDELINES THINKING THAT ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS TO wait and SEE What the Call Committee recommended and to vote. While all along, we had not prepared ourselves with dealing with a Pastor Randyless Church. Transition goes hand in hand with faith and trust. Just as we have Faith and Trust in the Tri-une GOD which we Worship, we need to have Faith in the Call Committee who are follow-ing the Holy Spirit’s leading in all of their considerations. Witness the fact that they will not rush any part of the process, but intend to wait on the leading of the Holy Spirit. While they are in the midst of the process, we need to pray daily for the Call Committee. They have spent at least two hours weekly for 40 weeks, on behalf of the Church. I think it is safe to assume that we all believe in our hearts that GOD is in control, SO LET’S let go of all the perils mentioned above and let God work thru the Call Committee.

ARAM KERMOYAN, PRESIDENT

Marvin Combs, for arranging this visit. Following this festival service is our fellowship time of coffee and goodies. Then all of us are invited at 11:45 AM for a ‘CHAT WITH THE BISHOP’ to ask questions, hear of the goings on of our small (450 congrega-tions) and new (5 years), but very robust and faithful, Lutheran church body. YOU REAL-LY WANT TO BE HERE! BISHOP JOHN IS A POWERFUL AND FAITH FILLED CHRISTIAN and his message and words will uplift, challenge, and inspire you. He served for a number of years at Grace Lutheran Church in Huntington Beach, and likes returning to CA.

We would like to thank everyone for the calls, cards and many prayers for Lloyd and me.

This has been an interesting start of the new year. I firmly believe that if God brings you to it, he will also bring you through it. We have really kept Him busy lately. Without our praying Church family I don’t know what we would do. Thank you to the Senior Lunch-eon folks for being so kind to send us dinner. The delivery by Pastor Randy was a special surprise. More good news from your Good News Team! This month is written by Statement of Faith, Sandy Lebens

I was fortunate to grow up in a Christian home in rural Nebraska where my Mom and my Dad modeled their faith in God for my brothers and myself. As a farmer, my father trusted that the rain would fall and the crops would flourish and my mother knew that their livelihood depended upon it. In years when rain was scarce or the commodity market hit bottom, I do not remember either of them being angry or resentful, but rather trusting and hopeful that next year would be better. As I reflect on this, I know as a young girl growing up that I was self-absorbed in my friends and activities and “I really didn’t quite get it”. I now know that a beautiful foundation of faith in God was laid for me during those early years. As a young woman of 21, my own real faith journey began when I married Frank and he was deployed in the Navy to the South China Sea 2 months after our wedding. It was during those first 5 years that both of our boys were born with Frank being out of the country for many months at a time. Prayer became so important to me as I sought to overcome personal loneli-ness, worry about Frank, and patience and strength to guide and nurture our sons during Frank’s absence. As our sons grew into young teenagers and we juggled job commitments, church posi-tions, time as a family and with each other, I remember feeling that there was just not enough of me to go around. It seemed I was always robbing one part of my life to have time for another. My prayer then was to be strong, perceptive of my family’s needs, and prayers of gratitude for the rich, full days that were mine. When I sustained a major disappointment and betrayal on the job, I had to lean on my faith in God to lead me onward. I am not sure when my faith walk became more intentional, but it has clearly been within the last ten years. My prayers shifted from my needs and my gratitude to God to really asking God each day what I need to do on that day to make a difference to someone else. Then the real key is for me to slow down and really listen and to be open to what God asks of me. So often it is not at all what my “to do list” was for the day. As I have worked toward seeking God’s plan for me, I find that my faith deepens and I become more keenly aware of God’s grace in my life. I am such a work in progress and I don’t have nearly as many answers as I thought I did in my 20’s and 30’s. Sometimes I wonder how that can be. I know God guides my life and forgives my oversights, my dark thoughts, and my sins each and every day.

My faith journey will continue and I am excited to see where I am led.

Greetings, faithful prayer warriors! Your Call Committee began the month of March by hosting a Call Committee Workshop taught by Pastor Steve Lien, LCMC's Coordinator for Pastoral Ministry. This six-hour workshop was attended by Council, the Call Committee, Pas-tor Randy and Patty, and a few members of the congregation. It was an extremely valuable experience for all of us and fo-

cused a great deal on the concept of Transition. Transition, with a capital "T," is something we experience in many stages of life, whether it be leaving home for the first time to live on your own, getting married, having children, moving to a new home or neighborhood, changing jobs, or loss of a loved one. The "Transition" for each of these life events takes place over a period of time and requires a significant period of adjustment from the prior situation to the new situation. Additionally, all of these Transitions (again, I use a capital "T" because they're a BIG deal) in-volve a great deal of emotion. Think about the first time you lived on your own, or bought your first home, or that moment you first held your first child and probably thought to yourself, "Can I really do this? I'm scared!!" The concept of Transition is all about acknowledging and actively managing all of that emotion. One amazing metaphor that was presented during the workshop was that the Call process is a bit like labor and the birth of a new child. There is anticipation, fear, excitement, growth, pain, and ultimately new life. The strain of labor, and the pain that comes with it, is rewarded with the joy of seeing that new life and embracing the potential that is in this new life! And all the while, as the pain, fear, and anxiety might start to creep up on us and threaten to get the best of us, all we have to remember is to BREATHE, and breathe again, and again. God is in control! If you feel like you need help managing this emotion and this period of Transition, please remember our Stephen Ministers! They are skilled in helping us learn to lean on our Lord in times of trial! We all need to acknowledge that the "unknown" of our future is a little scary but, if we rely on God's great grace and we continue to fervently pray for the Holy Spirit's constant intervention in this process, He will reveal His plan for this "Little Church with the Big Heart" on His corner! Late March and early April have been consumed with first-round "get to know you" interviews with a number of candidates. Please pray for those candidates and their families as they seek God's call for their ministries and for the Call Committee and Council as we work together and seek God's direction.

Yours in Christ,

Janice Goodwin, Mona Hart, Steve Kapka, Julie Lebens, Dave Light, Tom Reilly, Adrienne St.John, Bob Weiger, Kay Werner, Cal Wood.

Wake Up America!

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet: declare to my people their transgressions, to the house of Jacob their sins.” Isaiah 58:1

Our God is the God of all creation, Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, there is no other! Mark 13, Matthew 24 “...Many will come in my name...they will lead many astray...false proph-ets, false christs, you will hear of wars and rumors of war...nation will rise against nation, pow-ers against powers, earthquakes, famines, terrors, like birth pangs (slow then progressively stronger)...they will deliver you to authorities to bear witness before them...you will be hated for my names sake...” Don’t we all feel it? Our country needs our Lord today more than ever. The Israelites were astonishingly blessed, turned their backs on God and suffered from their own actions. Again, and again and again. America has done the same. We are blessed to live in a country where the First Amendment to the Constitution, the law of the land, states that Congress is not to establish a religion or prohibit the free exercise of one! Our country was largely founded by people who fled religious and political persecution in Eu-rope. They suffered in countries where the ruler or the state determined what religious practices were followed and what political views were allowed. In the twentieth century, in an attempt to eradicate religion, certain totalitarian European states did not allow parents to give their children a religious education before the age of eighteen. Today, even in the twenty-first century, there are many countries, in the world where Christians cannot express their beliefs to others, some on pain of imprisonment and even death. Here in the United States of America we are seeing some of our religious liberties being criminalized. It is time. Time to go boldly but humbly before the Lord in fervent and diligent prayer. May 5, 2016 is the National Day of Prayer. Saint John’s Lutheran Church will observe this date. See next month’s Eagle for details. However, you can start early. We are including in this issue the National Prayer written by Dr. Tony Evans, Honorary Chairman of this observance, for you to start petitioning Our Father for His divine guidance. “Return to the Lord your God for He is gracious and merciful...who knows, He may turn and relent and leave a blessing....” Joel 2:13

Page 13: The Eaglesaintjohnsag.com/hp_wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/...2016/04/03  · The Eagle Saint John’s Lutheran Church A Christ-Driven Church! Building Faith & Family, Fellowship

This is the prayer offered by Dr. Tony Evans, Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer, May 5, 2016. It is not too early to start praying it now! Your Good News Team National Prayer Dear heavenly Father, we come to You today as a humble people desperate for Your super-natural intervention on behalf of our beloved nation. First, we thank You for all the bless-ings You have bestowed on our land, blessings that have allowed us to bring so much good and benefit to not only our own citizens but also to the rest of the world. The very ideals up-on which this country was founded were based on biblical truths, no matter how some try to rewrite history to deny that very fact today. This is why our hearts are so broken over how You continue to be marginalized and dis-missed by both our people and our institutions. We are also saddened by the fact that Your people have contributed greatly to the spiritual apathy that now engulfs us. Our satisfaction in remaining religious without being fully committed to living out the truths of Your Word has caused us to become co-conspirators with the forces of evil that are destroying us as a society. It is for this reason that we personally and collectively repent of our carnality and recommit ourselves to becoming visible and verbal disciples of Jesus Christ. Enable us, by Your Spir-it, to no longer be secret agent Christians but rather to publicly declare and live out Your truth in a spirit of love so that You feel welcome in our country once again. Thank You for Your promise to hear our prayers when we call to You with hearts of repent-ance and obedience, which is how we are appealing to You today, Father. On behalf of Your church, we affirm afresh the priority You are to us that You would fill every dimension of our lives as we seek to bring You glory through the advancement of Your kingdom in our personal lives, our family lives, and in the lives of our churches and our government leaders. We confidently invite heaven’s intervention into all the affairs of our nation and we praise You in advance for Your answer.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

by Dr. Tony Evans

SPIRITED 50’S SATURDAY

APRIL 9, 2016, 6:00 P.M.

Thank you Ed Muraski for the Part II program for healthy living and exercise. Dianna was not able to make the event as the flu bug caught her as it has several of the group over this recent period. Our dessert was healthy muffin’s and cookies along with our traditional Lu-theran coffee, and tea was available for those that did not want to drink coffee. Our fellow-ship period was short and was in room 7/8 as we prepared to launch into the program. As Ed presented the program several questions were presented and Ed provided the answers. The program ended with a round of applause.

SATURDAY April 9th at 6:00 P.M., we’ll be gathering in the Fellowship Hall to fellowship, enjoy a delicious dessert and then proceed with the program for the evening. Our hosts for the evening will be “the Guys,” Jerry DeVos, Jim Hall, and Frank Drake. Bring your green visors as we’ll be playing bingo. Please sign up on the sign up sheet in the Fellowship Hall or call Frank Drake 343-2200 to let us know that you will be attending so we can be adequately prepared.

We need hosts or hostesses for the calendar year of 2016. We’ve start off with a bang. HOWEVER WE NEED HOSTS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR. I know you want to meet and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow Christian brothers and sisters. So step forward and be a host/hostess. Without your help we won’t meet. Please think about hosting so we don’t miss our opportunities to gather. The host sign up sheet for 2016 is posted on the bulletin board, and is located adjacent to the phone in the entrance hall to the Fellowship Hall. Without a host there will not be a chance to gather and fellowship with your Christian Brothers and Sisters. Please ei-ther sign the Host sign up sheet or call Frank Drake at 343-2200. Please consider hosting twice a year, and try to limit hosts to two cou-ples, or 4-5 people, so we’ll have plenty of hosts to share the fun time.

We have posted several suggested activities on the bulletin board so the hosts would have some type of activity to choose from if they did not have one they would like to present. You’ll find the suggested activity list posted in our area. If you cannot make a decision as to what the program will be, ask Frank Drake for help. Remember there really isn’t anyone too young or too old to join us and enjoy the fellowship period we have together. If you have not attended our gatherings you do not know what you have missed. It’s light and fun time. Come and find out for yourself.

In HIS Service, FRANK DRAKE

Five Cities Food Ministry: Contributions of peanut butter, pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and fruit are always needed, and the wagon in the Commons is waiting to be filled. Call Eileen, Food Coordinator for Five Cities Food Ministry, 801-4515, for information, or to volunteer.

People’s Kitchen: It’s wonderful news that PK has a home to serve daily noon full meals in-

doors at Pacific Christian Center in Grover Beach. Every day at 11:30 am the host church will conduct a worship and then the worshippers will break into a meal to-gether. Saint John’s is always the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Call Linda McNair, 929-6929, for information about this ministry, or to volunteer your help.

Health Ministries Committee: Anyone with a health related background is invited. Contact person, Yvonne Stephens 489-6919.

Women’s Ministry

The mission of the Women’s Ministry is to serve the congregation and community with love and fellowship.

We will meet on Wednesday April 13th at 1:00 for a business meeting with a speaker (TBA). For this meeting we need refreshments/hostesses (2), and someone to give a devotion. Please let us know if you can help. Also, Women's Ministry is sponsoring a special event on Wednesday, April 27th. This in-formative program is a presentation on "The Legacy Program of Dignity Health at Arroyo Grande and Marian Hospitals." You will learn about the transition from a community hospi-tal to a faith based non-profit organization under the management of Dignity Health (formerly known as Catholic Healthcare West). The presentation will include a little history, the many improvements that have been made, and the plans for future hospital and medical services. Our speaker is long time Saint John’s member, Mr. Terry Fibich. Terry is Chairman of the Community Board of Directors for Mar-ian and Arroyo Grande Hospitals. We will gather in the Annex Board Room at the Arroyo Grande Hospital at 12:00 noon for lunch, followed by a presentation and tour of the facilities. Please mark your calendars for this event. More information will be available at our April 13th meeting. Seating is limited. This is a unique opportunity to learn what services we can expect in our own community and ask questions that are important to us. Please save Thursday May 12th at 5:00 PM for our annual Taco & Bingo Night.

We hope to see all Saint John’s Women at these events. Women’s Ministry Board: Rena Weiger, Jean Wilson, Jan Straka & Kay Werner
