Pastor’s Letter July 20/21 Dear Parish Family, In July of 1969 I was a recent graduate of Bishop Reilly High School heading toward studies in Physics and Electrical Engineering at Brooklyn Polytech, now the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. For a kid interested in science and technology, the adventures of the NASA space missions of the 60’s and 70’s were an unimaginable treat. It seemed that every month brought a new real life adventure into the unexplored realms of the universe and space flight. On July 20th I was glued to our black and white TV as were millions of others, witnessing live the first landing of a spacecraft on another celestial body. It was frightening and exhilarating all at once to think of these astronauts so far away, executing a landing that had never been tested before. For the science minded there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a hypothesis or experiment proven — and this one in such an amazing way. For others, the Apollo landing had political meaning. It was the symbol of the rivalry between two nations, the United States and Russia. It was the test of our differing political ideologies, of our economic and educational systems, and the pride of our citizenship. These amazing missions lasted just three years. The last time a visitor from Earth stood on the moon was in December of 1972. There were seven missions in all. Six successful landings and one dramatic rescue — Apollo 13. As missions of discovery, the space program brought us advances in science, technology, and communication. But perhaps the most poignant moment in the Apollo missions actually happened some six months before, in December of 1968 when Apollo 8 made the first mission into deep space, from Earth orbit to lunar orbit. 1968 was a turbulent and violent year, a year of protests and assassinations in our land. But on Christmas Eve in 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders read from the Book of Genesis while in orbit around the moon, and broadcast back to Earth a picture of the Earth itself rising above the lunar landscape. The image of the Earth from space proved to be an inspiring and deeply spiritual experience for the astronauts and for many who viewed these first true self-portraits. From space the Earth is uniquely beautiful. The blue of the oceans and the green and tan colors of the land were breathtaking. Everyone had seen maps of the earth but no one had ever seen its true colors against the dark sky. And hardly anyone had ever seen the continents without the usual palette of colors used to define our nations and political boundaries. From space, the Earth was simply one world. Many have observed that we were finally seeing the Earth as God might see it. I am sure that is why the astronauts were inspired to read from Genesis and in fact why the vast majority of the astronauts have reported their flight was profoundly life-changing. The world is nothing less than God’s creation and we are all equal citizens of this one world. Why go to the moon? In 1969 I could have given you all the right scientific reasons. But now I know more clearly that it was the picture of our home that was worth it all. To see ourselves as equal citizens of the one good creation of our God. Sincerely yours in Christ,

          We know and love the Catholic Faith because, over many years, women and men have practiced the

Faith and passed it on to us.

We “pay it forward.” We pass on the Faith by our attitudes and actions in many ways.

Serving as a catechist is a particular way of doing this.

Registration for the 2019-2020 Religious Education

Program is now in progress. Registration forms the Fall have been

mailed to all families that had a child registered during the past year.

If you are new to the parish or did not receive the registration forms,

please visit our website (www.shjmbasilica.org) and click on the Sacred

Hearts Religious Education Menu. We also have forms available at the

doors of the church and at the rectory office.

Please help us to prepare by registering your child before July 31.

Eucharistic Adoration Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life Each week our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.

It’s all about attitude. In Sunday’s Gospel, poor Martha is chided for asking Jesus to get her sister

Mary to help with the serving. Jesus tells Martha Mary has chosen the better part. Before we even

consider attitude, we could rejoice that Jesus is not reducing a woman’s place to the kitchen, which

was customary in his day—and is still customary in many places today. But back to attitude:

Interesting that St. Luke talks about “serving,” not setting a table, cooking, and cleaning, even though

that’s what we usually envision Martha doing with no help in sight. But let’s change the picture a bit;

let’s focus on serving as caring for a guest. Especially since Martha is described as the one who

welcomed Jesus in the first place, wouldn’t it make sense that she is pleased that he accepted the

invitation, and wouldn’t she be eager to serve him? If this invitation has become a burden, the sense

of service is getting lost, and it does sound like it’s become burdensome. While Martha is absolutely

right that there is work involved in treating a guest, it shouldn’t be tainted with resentment. And

serving shouldn’t be focused on the tasks at hand but on the person for whom they are being

performed. It would certainly have been nice if Mary and any others present offered Martha some

help, but a main point here is that you and your guest have the opportunity to enjoy each other’s

company, whether the meal is ready or the dishes are washed.

Church Roof Repairs Our church roof, all natural slate, is fundamentally in good shape. But the places where the roof meets the Bell Tower and the covered portico are in bad shape. Both leak terribly during storms, which damages the interior walls and woodwork. Estimated repairs for these are $75,000.

New Gathering Area in Front of Our Church

The area in front of our main church doors has been redone many times over the last 112 years. Presently it is a mix of sidewalk, concrete squares, and brick. There are many cracks and uneven spots. The proposal is to replace and widen this entire area with natural bluestone pavers which will match and enhance the beauty of the entrance to our church. This is the most ambitious project this year and will take about $110,000 to complete.

West Side Walkway Improving the west side walkway to match the work done on the east side of the church will bring our church walkways to completion. The proposal is to use the same bluestone as is on the east walkway and to move it back from the church by several feet. This will allow more room for plantings which now overflow their beds onto the sidewalk. Cost will be $25,000

Rectory Accessibility Project This fall, on a grant from the Dalessandro Foundation, we will be building two ramps and changing the elevation of the front door of the rectory so that it is completely accessible to all. While we have some funds available for the project, we would like to invest an additional $50,000 to improve our driveway between the buildings making it more beautiful and much safer.

Each year we strive to restore and make improvements to our beautiful basilica church, to other parish buildings, and to the parish grounds. In 2016 we completed a huge project of air conditioning our church, building rest rooms, renovating our bell tower, and replacing carpets and lighting. Since then we have restored the beauty of our church doors, created a beautiful path and garden on the east side of our church, and created a new meeting space in our rectory office. Less inspiring, but just as necessary, we completed more than $60,000 of repairs to the heating system in our parish hall and rectory. Your summer generosity and the special gifts of parishioners and friends made this all possible. So what are our dreams for 2019-2020? Here are some things we are working on.
