No.18. 5 th November, 2015 Please remember now that we are in term 4, hats are required to be worn when students are outside otherwise they will be asked to play in the shade. Bucket hats and broad brim hats can be purchased from the uniform shop for $8.00 each. Principals Report The last two weeks have been exceedingly busy at YPS. Classes are getting ready for their respective presentation ceremonies and work is continuing at a fast pace in readiness for our assessment week which is next week. Please keep in mind that if your child is not unwell they will need to be at school so that accurate assessments can be made for reports. This is particularly important for spelling and maths where children are grouped in classes according to their needs. The presence of a brown snake in our playground last week caused a bit of excitement for both staff and students. We have had snakes at school before and it was a good reminder for us all to be careful during the warm days we have been having. Scott Corcoran is our snake catcher and he spoke to the staff at our staff meeting on Tuesday morning about the most common snakes found in our area and how to render first aid if anyone is bitten. Scott has available for purchase special bandages for $20 and a first aid kit for $80. If you would like to purchase any of these items you could contact Scott directly or leave your name and money at the office and we will contact Scott for you. Last week it was lovely to see two beautiful pink rose buds at Emma’s memorial open up. Darryl Medway dropped in and was able to see the rose in bloom. With the recent rain the garden is “looking a picture” Last night the Disco fundraiser for the Year 6 present to the school was held. Thank you to Mrs Rae and Ms Bird for all your hard work in organising the event. We must also thank the parent helpers in the canteen and the other staff who helped with supervision. It was a fun night for all! Today we have had Stamp Out Bullying. This has been a good reminder for students with their increasing use of computer technology and in their everyday interactions with others. While we work hard at YPS to encourage safe and fair play all children need those reminders to think of others. Thank you letter from the Medway Family. We would like to thank all those people who have helped our family in the passing of Emma, whether in their kindness, friendship, supportive words, or the flowers, photos, many donations plus offers of help. We treasure them all as they have all helped our family in their own way at this difficult time. Special thanks should go to the Yass Public school P&C and teaching staff for Emma’s remembrance day and the memorial at the school. Although Emma has only been with us for a short 11 ½ years, she has left her mark in the sporting and athletic fields for future students to aspire to. Emma would be so proud of what her school has done to honour her memory and acknowledge her achievements. It means a great deal to our family to keep Emma’s memory alive for many years to come. Thank You Darryl, Lynette, Ben and Lachlan Medway.

Stamp out Bullying.

On Thursday 5th November Yass Public School students participated in an anti-bullying performance. The strong message learnt form the day was that we need to STAMP out bullying. Here is how: S= Stay away from the Bully T= Tell Someone ( teacher, parents or a trusted adult) A= Always help (be a true friend if you see someone being bullied or playing by themselves) M= Make friends (friends stick together and help) P= Play nicely (always remember) We can make BULLYING disappear if we do it together. The performance was highly entertaining and educational and provided students with strategies to become ‘bullyproof’. Further resources for parents and students to access can be found at www.bullyingnoway.gov.au. Donna Barton

Year 3/4Camp to Birrigai.

Camp was so good, there were awesome activities, great food and great people. When we got to Birrigai, we had some morning tea, went to our cabins and then went to activities. My group went to the flying fox first. It was epic at the top, it was about 10m high. When you get released, you would go really fast for about 100m faster than Usane Bolt by far. The next day we had breakfast. I at Sultana Bran and two pieces of toast with honey and vegemite. After breakfast we went to the puzzle solving activity. It had lots of problems we had to solve. The next activity was an obstacle race. You had to get an endangered frog past all the obstacles, back to where you started. When we had free time there were two birds who were nesting. They were swooping everyone who went into their nesting area. Our teachers told us to stay out of their territory. The last day at camp we played a game called “The Web of Life”. We went to the dining room for lunch before we got on the bus to come home. I think it was the best experience of my life … so far. Jake McDonald. My Birrigai Adventures When we arrived at Birrigai I was so excited to get off the bus, I just wanted to do all the activities at once. For lunch we had two sausages and one bun. Then we went to our cabins and put our stuff on our beds. Next we put on our sunscreen, got our hats and filled our water bottles. We went to the shared area and found out that we were split into four groups for the afternoon activities. I was with some of my friends. We went to crate climbing and my buddy and I got to ten crates high. That was quite good because the Birrigai staff got to ten crates high so I felt very happy. It isn’t about the competition, well if you are up against the boys, then I guess it could be about the competition! On the second day, we had cereal and toast for breakfast. After we finished that, we went back to our cabins, cleaned our teeth and put our sunscreen on. We went to the shared area and found that our first activity for the day was cooking damper. My group got their fire lit first and when I bit into that damper, it was delicious. I could have eaten ten dampers without getting full.

Our next activity was the flying fox and it was hard work doing all the jobs but it was worth it. Especially when I got to see the view and have that great adventure. Next we had to carry a toy corroboree frog around the obstacle course and not touch the ground with only using three planks. On the third day we packed up our bags, and that was hard considering we

couldn’t get some people up and out of bed. We had to take our bags to where the bus would pick them up. Then we had breakfast.

We did our last activity and had lunch which was chicken pie that I didn’t Like. Next we got on the bus to go home. When I saw my dad I was so HAPPY!

Whooping cough information for schools There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children.

Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger

brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can

occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at

night.

• Children with these symptoms should see a doctor.

• If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in your school-aged child, please let the school know and keep your

child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

• Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades with time. Check that all

your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of

age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also

recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young children, such as school staff

and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by

NSW Health. Those who are new parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about

appropriate immunisation.

Your local public health unit can provide advice about whooping cough on 1300 066 055 or visit the NSW Health website for information for childcare and schools about whooping cough
