Proposed Program

Friday 7 April

What you can expect …

The theme – We live in a digital age but we must not lose sight of the past and the value history contributes to our communities. In an ever changing world the pursuit and recording of history is also changing but will museums, archives, historical and family history groups of today survive the pressures of such rapid change and declining memberships? During the weekend our speakers will address this and other aspects of keeping history alive and within the public gaze. Our keynote speaker is Dr Mathew Trinca, Director of the National Museum of Australia. He and Dr Carol Liston of the Royal Australian Historical Society together with speakers from diverse backgrounds and disciplines will give thought provoking presentations of interest to any one interested in Australian history. Participants are especially encouraged to join in the Sunday morning forum. It’s not all talk —It is country hospitality with a concert and drinks, before dinner in Galong House the homestead of the Ryan family who were renowned for their hospitality. Good food, good wine and good company with after dinner speaker Dr David Headon will ensure an enjoyable evening. An iconic setting—The venue for our weekend devoted to Australian history and its preservation in its many forms is one of the oldest surviving properties in southern NSW. Whether you are a dedicated volunteer at a local museum or archives, a keen family historian or have an interest in history this is the event to be part of in 2017. St Clement’s at Galong will give you the opportunity to experience history in a unique setting. The property was settled in the late 1820s by transported Irish convict Edward ‘Ned’ Ryan and for many years Ned's holdings were 'beyond the limits of location'. As his extensive pastoral holdings grew through determination and hard work so did his prosperity and generosity to his family, friends, neighbours and the church. Come and experience the tradition of hospitality that Galong has become renowned for.
