Temple Israel. It has been a pleasure to
share music with the congregation during
the High Holidays for the past six years, and
I look forward to expanding that musical
relationship with my new position. In
addition, my experience in programming
and event planning has uniquely positioned
me for this new opportunity. I look
forward to brainstorming creative ideas
with everyone to help build community in
our congregation.”

From the Rabbi
I would like to draw your attention to
a couple of things that are different in
Temple Israel’s building. First of all,
please take note of the new curtain in
the main ark. Sometimes things come
together as if they were always meant
to be (b’shert). That was the case with
this new curtain. Let me explain.
The original ark curtain needed to be
replaced. It was quite literally falling
apart with the passage of time and due
to its construction from very light
weight material. This led to it getting
tangled up in the metal doors with
some frequency. What was b’shert
was a telephone call I got from Bob
Kahn’s daughter. She pointed out that
her family would be celebrating Bob’s
90th birthday at Temple on an Erev
Shabbat in October with a special oneg
and she wanted to know if Temple
needed anything that they could buy in
celebration of Bob’s milestone.
Fortunately, they thought our need for
a new curtain would be a perfect
opportunity. Then thanks to Carol
Finley, who designed and fabricated
the new curtain in record time, we
were able to show off our sanctuary’s
new addition at Bob’s special service.
Even though this work is still in
progress I would also like to draw
your attention to our Chapel ark as
well. The project began with the
problem presented by the ark’s doors.
They simply didn’t close correctly.
Also, the depth of the ark was such
that our Torah scroll barely fit inside.
After many discussions with the
worship and music committee, the
religious school committee, the
executive committee and the board of
trustees, it was decided to fix these
problems with a design that would
somewhat change the look of the ark
even though most of the infrastructure
would stay the same. You may have
noticed the religious school committee
was included in this process and
wonder why. Here is the answer.
The question was asked if there was any
other goal that might be achieved at the
same time we went about fixing the
problems with the Chapel ark. When
thinking about this I focused on how
many people have told me they took
part in one way or another in the
building of our wonderful building.
People obviously contributed the funds,
but I’ve also repeatedly heard about the
meaningful walk of Torahs to this new
location. Someone also told me that
while the building was under
construction an opportunity was given
to Temple Israelites to come and sign
their names on various parts of the
infrastructure. All this reminded me
how important a physical connection to
one’s synagogue building can be.
The children in our religious school
were obviously too young to have
participated in any of those delightful
things as our building was being built
and completed. Yet, redoing the
Chapel ark could give them an
opportunity for just that sort of
connection. This is why we asked our
religious school kids to design tiles,
which are being executed by a
professional artist at K-12 in a glass-
mosaic technique, which will decorate
the new ark doors. As of this writing
the tiles are still in progress so the
project is not complete. I can’t wait to
see the reaction of our religious school
students when they see their efforts
ornamenting our Chapel’s ark.
If you haven’t done it yet, please stop by
and see these two new marvelous
additions to our worship spaces.

Mipnei Darchei Shalom – For the Sake
of the Ways of Peace
Working together with people of
other faith groups in our community
to achieve social justice has always
been a key value to the Jewish
people. In the Jerusalem Talmud we
are taught: "In a city where there are
both Jews and Gentiles, the collectors
of alms collect from both Jews and
Gentiles; they feed the poor of both,
visit the sick of both; bury both and
restore the lost goods of both, for the
sake of the ways of peace." It makes
sense to us that when we sit down
with each other and pool our
resources we make strides to improve
our entire community. These efforts
help to bring peace to all who are
affected and also brings peace to our
relationships.
For nearly two decades, Temple Israel
and Omega Baptist Church have chosen
to use our unique history (Omega
having purchased Temple’s old building
on Salem and Emerson) to nurture a
relationship based on fellowship,
education, and social action. Every
January, over Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day weekend, we hold a pulpit
exchange. Rev. Daryl Ward and Rev.
Vanessa Oliver Ward have shared our
bimah at Friday night services and
delivered messages that have touched
the hearts of us all. Next year, that
service will be held on January 17. On
Sunday mornings, Temple members
have attended services at Omega Baptist
Church where Rabbi Sofian has
delivered the sermon. Next year that
service falls on January 19.
Every year our religious school has
attended the Sunday morning service at
Omega. This is part of our curriculum
because we believe that exposure to
other cultures and faiths will
encourage our children to embrace
opportunities in the future to work
together towards social justice.
This year, to increase religious school
student and parent participation,
classes will be held in the morning at
Temple at the usual time. Then,
at 10:45 a.m., we will transport
students to Omega by bus and
students should return to Temple
by 1:15 p.m. Teachers will accompany
their students but we strongly
encourage parents to join us for
the 11:15 a.m. service at Omega (1821
Emerson Ave.). Parents are also
welcome to drive their children to
Omega themselves.
For the sake of the ways of peace, I
encourage all members of Temple
Israel to join me at both of these
powerful events.
RAC Trip For

Temple Israel’s confirmation students

Temple’s Fourth Annual Jewish Cultural Festival Will Feature
Food, Dance, Music, Education and Fun For Everyone
Mark your calendar now for Sunday, June 8.
You won’t want to miss being part of Temple’s
fourth annual Jewish Cultural Festival
(JCF) and it’s not too early to get involved in
the festival fun. This years event co-chairs,
Sara Faust and Jon Freeman have some new
and exciting ideas to help introduce the
Greater Dayton community
to our congregation and our
heritage but they’ll need your
help to make it all happen.
A committee chair is still
needed for food and some co-
chair positions remain
available. Of course
volunteers will also be needed
to help get the word out, to
assist with planning, to bake
cookies and breads, to greet
visitors, to act as tour guides,
assist with children’s activities
and many more. You can help
on the day of the festival or in
advance. There is plenty of work to be done
for all ages and skill levels. Contact the
Temple office by phone at 496-0050 to
volunteer or e-mail [email protected] and let us
know how you would like to help.
Again this year the festival will offer activities
for children, adults, families, people of all faiths,
heritage and cultures.
Bring your family, friends,
co-workers and neighbors.
Remember the key to the
festival success is in our
attendance and our
volunteers. So spread the
word, talk to people, hang
up posters and get involved
in your Jewish community.
It can’t be done without
you.

Please Call Us
Our Rabbis want to reach out to

when a friend or loved one is ill,
hospitalized, in a nursing home,
assisted living facility or shut in. Share
the happy news, too—we might not
know about a marriage, birth or
other simcha unless you tell us!

Got Mug?
Get Yours At Kibbitz Café On Sundays
Stop by the Kibbitz Café any Sunday morning and buy a thermal coffee mug —
they’re trimmed in blue, but they’re one way our Café is going green! Best of
all, when you buy your mug for $15, you’ll also get a $10 Kibbitz Kard to use on
any of the Café’s menu items.
Remember, Kibbitz offers convenient breakfast and lunch items on Sundays
when religious school is in session, including pizza some weeks! All proceeds
benefit our religious school.
A $2 surcharge per adult will be assessed for reservations received after the deadline.
