Law of thirdsAre guidelines that helps to the visual composition: photography, painting, design, filming.The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.

Photoshop has tools for each necessity: • Selection tools: You can move elements, select predetermine or free forms.• Cutting tools and sectors creator: they let us cut parts of the image or create sectors.• Measure tools: this are the rulers, notes, eyerdropper tool, etc.• Retouch tools: they let us make corrections over images. We can patch, paint, eliminate red eyes, blur, erase, clon, etc.

Photoshop maneja herramientas para cada necesidad:•Herramientas de selección: nos permiten mover elementos, seleccionar según formas predeterminadas, seleccionar de manera libre, etc.•Herramientas para cortar y crear sectores: nos permiten cortar partes de nuestra imagen, o delimitar sectores.•Herramientas de medida: estas son el cuentagotas, el muestreo de color, la regla, las notas, y el recuento.•Herramientas para retocar: estas herramientas nos sirven para hacer correcciones sobre la imagen. Selection tools

• They are used to select certain area or element.

• The pointed lines that appear around an element mean that is a selection (cut) and only the elements inside this selection can be modiffied.

• To deselect use the shortcut: Ctrl+D

Herramientas de selección

• Como su nombre lo indica, sirven para seleccionar cierta área o elemento.

• Las líneas punteadas que aparecen alrededor del elemento indican un recorte y sólo lo que está dentro de dicha selección podrá ser editado.

• Para deseleccionar se utiliza la abreviación: Ctrl+D

Magic Wand and Quick selection• They are used to select a specific color quickly.• You can regulate the tolerance of selection to

match the color the best as the program can do it.

Varita Mágica y Quick selection• Sirven para seleccionar de manera rápida un

color específico. • Se puede regular la tolerancia para cuando

tienes varios colores difíciles de diferenciar.

TransformIs used to transform a selected image (or section):• Shortcut Ctrl+T or can find it in Edit->Transform• While using this tool, a rectangle appears. Put the

cursor (arrow) on any corner (there are little squares) and you can make the image bigger, smaller or rotate it.

• Use Shift while making the transformation and it will change with certain proportion.

Transformación• Sirve para transformar la imagen (o sección de

imagen) seleccionada:• Abreviación Ctrl+T o buscar en Edit->Transform• Aparece un recuadro donde, al colocar la flecha de

selección en las esquinas (recuadros pequeños) puedes agrandar, achicar o girar la imagen.

• Apretando Shift mientras realizas la transformación el objeto mantendrá su proporción.

Transform tools

The transform tool have different transformation ways to work:

• Scale (size)• Rotate (spin around in any grade)• Skew, distort and perspective (are used to

modify the image in different forms, scales, adapt to certain conditions needed)

• Warp (modify the image just in some points)

Paint (bucket and gradient tool)

• Paint bucket is used to fill open areas with a solid color. You can use the selection tools to define this area, too.

• The gradient tool can be edited to create different kind of gradients: lineal, radial, centered, cuts, etc.

Pintura (bote y degradados)

• Bote de pintura sirve para pintar un área abierta de un color sólido.

• El degradado se puede editar para generar distintos tipos de degradados: lineales, circulares, céntricos, cortes, etc.; con colores de la preferencia del usuario.

Paint Bucket: fills all the area with a solid color

Gradiente: It let you use a lot of colors to obtain different color effects.

Double click on the gradient rectangle to open the editor.

Type of gradients: diamond, circle, lineal, cut.

Move images from different workspaces• Open the workspace where you’re going to be

working and then open the image file you need. It will appear in a different workspace (because life is cruel )

• Go to the image workspace, use the selection arrow (Move shortcut V) and drag the image to the other workspace.

• The easiest way is go to google, find the image, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste it in the workspace (Crtl+V)

Trasladar una imagen a un workspace distinto• Se abre el área de trabajo donde se realizará

todo el proyecto y se abre la imagen que se desea editar.

• Para poder trasladar una imagen a otro workspace es indispensable que el layer (o capa) no esté bloqueado.

• Posteriormente, el workspace de la imagen se desprende y con la flecha de arrastra el elemento a la otra ventana.

Pen• Is used to draw lines,

curves, selections and solids based on vectors.

• You can change from a straight line to a curve dragging the anchors.

• The vectors are equations that the program interpret to complete the rest of the line.

Pluma• La pluma sirve para trazar

líneas o realizar selecciones basándose en vectores.

• Se pueden realizar trazos rectos o curvas jalando las anclas.

• Los vectores son ecuaciones que el programa va completando con forme va generando las líneas.

Cuts and vectors

• The line can be edited moving the anchor points.

• You can turn the line to a solid trace, a cut selection or a color solid using the Paths.

Brushes• Brushes are used to draw, paint or make

patterns for different purposes: – You can download different points to draw

and paint.– You can download different patterns or

images that can be used as backgrounds and textures.

You can download different brushes from internet, deviantart is a good source of brushes.

You can open the brush editor to edit the best brush for different kind of strokes. If pen pressure isn’t working, check out is turned on in this preset.

Take control of the tools with the keyboards.• Square bracket ([ ]): make the point of the tool (ex.

Eraser, brush, blur, etc) bigger or smaller.• Press any number and it will adjust it’s opacity. Ex.

1=10%; 4=40%; 0=100%. If you write a quick number the program would take it literal. Ex. 4+5=45%

• Spacebar: paneo, move the document through the workspace.

• R: Rotation; Turn around the paper using the mouse or writing the number of the angle. Get riddle of this with Esc key. This helps to rotate the document and make better traces.

• Corchetes ([ ]): agrandar y empequeñecer la punta de la herramienta que esté utilizando:pincel, borrador, blur, dodge, etc.

• Click en algún número del teclado ajusta la opacidad. Ejempo: 1 = 10%; 4= 40%; 0=100%. Si escribes los números rápido lo interpreta literal, ejemplo: 4+5=45%.

• Barra espaciadora: paneo, sirve para mover la hoja dentro del workspace.

• R: Rotación; rotar la hoja ayuda a acomodarse para realizar los trazos. Puedes rotarla con el mouse o escribiendo el número del ángulo. Lo desactivas con Esc.

Trick to blur or sharpen shapes, colors and pixels on the outlineUse the blur tool (gotita or

drop) to soften the borders of an image or to make a blur.

Use it with caution, lower the strength (more less 10%) and apply several times until you get that you want.

Truco para suavizar color o contornos pixeleados

Usar la herramienta blur (gotita) para suavizar bordes o hacer esparcidos (difuminar).

Usen esta herramienta con precaución. Seleccionarla y bajar la fuerza (en la sección de configuración de la herramienta) (a un 10% más o menos) para suavizarla e irlo calando.

Brushes• Brushes are used for textures. It depends on it’s

presets, the form, opacity and spacing.• Los brushes sirven para dar texturas, dependiendo de

Advices• Paleta de colores: Generar

un layer con todos los tonos sólidos que van a usar para pintar.

• Para llamar al gotero (y utilizar cierto color que se encuentre en la imagen) se tiene la herramienta en Brush (B) y se aprieta ALT + click izquierdo sobre el color que quieres escoger.

• Colors palette: Always create a layer with all the colors and tones you are working with for reference.

• To use the eyedropper (to choose certain color of the image) you must select the brush tool (B) and use the shortcut ALT + left click on the color you want to select.

Exercise 10: Tone ValuesThe students will draw 4 geometric figures and will paint it

with gray monochromatic tones using different brush strenght (wath conceptcookie video as guide).

Remember to choose where is the light coming from (choose any upper side)

Ejercicio 10: Valores tonalesEl alumno realizará 4 figuras geométricas con valores

Clipping mask

• Is a tool used to “cut” and edit images. You can take off a background, for example, but without erasing it. You keep the original image under a mask.

• It can be used for photomontages.

Layer adjustment• Creates masks over the layers

with different image editing properties. Is the same as the image adjustments but on the layers and can be adjusted.

• Crea máscaras de efectos sobre los layers, es lo mismo que los ajustes desde Imagen pero esta se convierte en máscara y puede ajustarse a las necesidades de la manipulación.

Clone StampThis buttom helps to copy parts of

an image to imitate a texture or erase details, etc.

Use: when selecting the tool (S), you need to choose the original image, use the shortcut Alt+left click on the part of the image you want to clone.

El botón de clon ayuda a copiar partes de la imagen para disimular, imitar texturas, etc.

Clone stamp used to create the wall and the floor.

FiltersThis are applications that help to create different kind of

effects on the images. There are many kind of filters and must be used depending on your necessities: artistic, blurs, lens flare, plastic, backgound effects, lights, etc.

FiltrosLos filtros son aplicaciones que ayudan a crear efectos

distintos a las imágenes. Existen distintos filtros de acuerdo a cada necesidad: desde convertir la imagen en algún estilo artístico, hasta generar efectos de plastificado, desenfoque, ruido, luces, etc.

Propiedades de los ajustes de imagen

Hue/Saturation• Helps to change the general color (hue), saturation

(grayish) and turn it brighter or darker.

Ayuda a cambiar el color general (hue), la saturación del color y aclarar u obscurecer.

Match color• This tool helps to get equal

tones between different images used in the composition or collage.

• You must choose the brightness and color properties of one image and this will affect the other layers.

• You can measure color intensity, lights, etc.

igualar tonos entre las distintas imágenes con las que se están trabajando.

• Se debe escoger la iluminación de una imagen, y será la que se escogerá para todos los layers.

• Se puede calibrar la intensidad de los colores, iluminación, etc.

Blending mode between layersIn the layers window is a blendig mode mixer that creates

different effects (depending on the image you are changing mode and the type of mode you are using) on the layers that are under the blended layer (the selected).

Blending mode entre capasEn la ventana de layers (capas) existe un mezclador de texturas y

efectos de color que afecta a todos los layers que se encuentran abajo. Estos efectos dependen del tipo de blender que estás utilizando en la capa seleccionada.

The effect selected affects the layers under the original layer.

Create color, light, texture saturation effects and combinations.

This blendings help to create different texture and lightning effects, and help to change environments, moods and camouflage images.

El efecto que se seleccione afecta al resto de las capas que se encuentran abajo.

Genera combinaciones y efectos de luces, texturas, color, saturación, etc.

Estos blending ayudan a crear distintos efectos como texturizados, iluminación, mimetizar imágenes, cambiar ambientes, etc.

Light effectsTo create different kind of light effects and brightness

you need brushes with different opacities, use a dark background to stand out the colors and apply blending mode to create different effects and feelings.

brushes, utilizar un fondo obscuro para que resalten los colores, o aplicar stock de rayos, todo esto puede ser regulado por los blending mode para generar distintos efectos y sensaciones.

Exercise 11: Compose and edit a Quimera

• The students are going to make a fantastic creature using different photoshop tools. They can use images from internet.

• Use edition tools as clipping mask, cut, tranform, perspective, warp, filters, blending modes; and painting tools as brushes, forms, etc.

• It needs to look as real as possible.

• Document: Letter size, between 150 and 200 dpis.• Date: Wednesday September 24th, before 9am

Ejercicio 11: Edición de Quimera

• El alumno, utilizando varias imágenes sacadas de internet, realizará una criatura fantástica (Quimera) utilizando las herramientas de photoshop vistas en la clase.

• Aplicará herramientas de edición: corte, transformación, perspectiva, filtros, etc.; y de dibujo: brushes, pintura, formas predeterminadas, etc.

• Debe verse lo más real posible.• Documento: Hoja carta, entre 150 y 200 dpis.• Entrega: miércoles 24 de septiembre antes de las 9am.

from internet or taken by themselves, brushes and photoshop tools to design a book cover, trying to create a wonderful world or a fantastic scene.

• They are going to create a graphic composition using the law of thirds.

Ejercicio12: Fotomontaje • El alumno, usando un

fotomontaje, realizará la portada de un libro donde se represente una escena fantástica o un mundo imaginario. Puede utilizar imágenes de internet o propias.

• Utilizará todas las herramientas y mañas de Photoshop para lograrlo, así como la ley de tercios para lograr una composición gráfica.

• Formato: Carta, 150 a 200 dpis• Entrega: Miércoles 1o de

octubre antes de las 9am.
