  • Ode To The Tri Virgin

On the winners podium they dream to be emergin Such are typical dreams of the tri virgin

High tech efforts to go faster like Total Immersion

Are the tactics used by some tri virgins

To go faster they shave legs and arms cause they think they are hairy All in an effort to complete all three and pop the tri cherry.

So we salute you in swim, bike, runand three sport aversion

And toast to the day you are no longer a tri virgin.

These folks started the season as Tri Virgins and by seasons end have achieved the status of TRIATHLETE. Congratulations to Sharon, Lindsey, Andrea, Craig, Keith, Dave, Brooke, Jay, Tim, Hugo & Mrs. Shavino, and Beverly .

Let us help you achieve you and your friends dreams.

  • Coping with the Off Season in the Eyes of a Triathlete - A commentary The Off Season. The bain of a triathlete's existence. Its a dark, ugly time no matter how you choose to cope with it. Many of us come from one sport backgrounds, so most of us migrate back to our "home" sport. However, with the cold months upon us, we're backed into a corner by the lifeguards who tell us that the pool is closed, so swimming is out. The thought of riding actually sounds nice...if you don't mind losing feeling in your face and fingers for the better part of the day. With this alone, your routine in-season training is shot. I can safely say that I did triathlons before I ever did any one sport. Mark made a home movie of me doing a "backyard" triathlon at 3... In a 2T pink shirt reading "Triathlete in Training". I was do-ing Meek n Mighty and YTS series the first year I was old enough to enter... so guess what...I did things like leave Gatorade and granola bars for Santa instead of milk and cookies. When my mom was at work on the weekends, I was riding in a baby jogger so Mark could get his long run in...thats fine, but not when you're 7. (I even recall riding in it during a road race once at around

    This is where

    many a

    triatlete can

    be found.

They heard about off season weight training, and there they are...up in the gym at 5 a.m., stackin plates and pumping iron.

  • that age). All the kids made fun of me for wear-ing Asics and not Nike's. Most kids have a Huffy...I mean really, who has a 26 inch Italian road bike complete with computer when they're 8 years old? You guessed it...this girl. If you can have a triathlon background, I guess that's what happened to me. As an objective multisporter, I've observed many ways us triath-letes can deal with the off season. Some of us stick to one coping mechanism, while others take a hybrid approach. Here are the types of personalities that make up triathletes and where you can find them this winter. The Off-Seasoner in Denial You can find them frantically searching Race Place or active.com for any 5k or 10k to sign up for, even 2 or more in the same weekend (don't act like it doesn't happen). Desperately clinging to the in-season and taking any chance to be around any type of event where they may find other overachieving mutlisporters disguised as

runners. I used to do this. Call me a tri snob, but I made sure to wear Zoots or a Team Psych top so that I wont be mis-taken for a runner (just in case you weren't paying attention to my ridiculously slow pace). Where to find them: Any road race within 30 miles of their home The Avenger These are triathletes out of their first sea-son, freshly "bitten" by the bug known as triathlon. They have a rounded season and a basket full of rookie mistakes under their belt. They heard about off season weight training, and there they are...up in the gym at 5 a.m., stackin plates and pumping iron. Prepping for next season and visualizing that podium, qualifying for nationals and maybe even worlds...

  • Where you can find them: Gym, Online ogling tri-goodies, Maxing out their credit cards buying every piece of equipment under the sun "That Crazy Person doing an Ironman" We've all seen em...well, barely..when they're not doing

100/10 bricks. You whisper and point, because they might as well be a freak of nature. You may no-tice "MISSING" signs in their front yards with their pictures, because their families and friend they think this person has suddenly relocated, or spontaneously combusted. Nope, just training for an ironman. Worse yet, maybe this is you if you haven't been burnt out by season after season and have been jaded by all the local races. Where you can find them: Good luck..maybe with a GPS? Getting Fat - Type A Ver-sion Of course I use the quota-tions because we all know what a triathletes version of getting "fat" is. This is the Type A triathlete version we all know. They decided this year they are gonna "lay off" during the off season. This may include a piece of carrot cake, and over the holidays, their body fat in-creasing to 8% vs. 7%, maybe even having a beer on Christmas Eve if they're feeling daring. However, its possible they may be training at the same rate as before "off season". Where you can find them: Closet Training - Going for

runs when they tell people they are "running errands" because they cant stand taking time off. Getting Fat No really...getting fat. This triathlete is so incredibly burnt out at this point, their bike has been sitting in the garage with a race number sticker on it since the last race of the season. By the time they take it out of the garage, it will have two flat tires. This includes reck-less caloric intake and probably unlim-ited alcohol consumption. This triathlete doesnt want to even talk about triathlon until at least April.
