BRIEFLYRecycling set to return

A kerbside recycling serv-ice for Waipa’s urban areas is expected to start in the coming year.

The weekly collection will utilise 55 litre recycling bins for households in Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Ohaupo, Ngahinapouri and Cambridge.

The service will be carried out by a private operator, con-tracted to Council after a public tendering process.

Cost has been estimated at $43 per rateable property, funded by a targetted rate.

The need for a recycling serv-ice was identifi ed in the Waipa District Waste Management Plan adopted last year.

Free theatre this weekend

Rowing to win Te Awamutu College row-

ers head to Lake Karapiro on Friday to take on the best from around the North Island.

The North Island Secondary Schools Championship is a three day regatta which fea-tures hundreds of rowers.

The running of the event will be under the watchful eye of a delegation from FISA, the international rowing fed-eration, which is interested in Lake Karapiro’s suitability as a venue for the 2010 World Rowing Championships (see page 8 for more details and further success for a former Te Awamutu College rower).

some signifi cant changes in the next decade as Waipa’s Long Term Council Commu-nity Plan comes to fruition.

The draft LTCCP is the subject of a report to Council’s policy committee meeting on Monday.

Among projects proposed in the years 2006-16 for Te Awamutu are introduction of a new kerbside recycling service in urban areas, new museum facilities, a new library, refurbishment of the central business district and resolving heavy vehicle access in the CBD.

Kihikihi is to get new foot-paths, while Pirongia main street is to be upgraded.

Community water and stormwater supplies will be upgraded and seal extension in rural areas will continue.

Cambridge projects include construction of a covered swimming pool, development at Karapiro Domain, and Lake Te Ko Utu, new foot-paths and museum.

The major projects are based on the need to upgrade

infrastructure to maintain services, meet increased standards, account for growth and promote development.

If the draft LTCCP is ap-proved by the policy commit-tee on Monday, it will be pub-licly released and submissions on it accepted until April 18.

It proposes a total rate rev-enue requirement of $27 mil-lion for 2006/07, which rep-resents an average increase of 5.89%.

As outlined in an article in Tuesday’s Courier, the LTCCP provides total capital expenditure of $190 Million (in 2006 dollar terms) over 10 years.

Of this around $40 Million is expected to be caused by growth and the LTCCP also proposes adoption of new de-velopment contributions to be paid by developers - around $24,000 per new allotment in Te Awamutu, $21,596 in Kihikihi and $11,340 in rural areas.

A series of public meet-ings on the draft LTCCP and proposed development contributions policy will be advertised.

The tournament hosts started well, with Stephen Kay scoring two goals early in the fi rst chukka for his team to lead 2-0.

A heavy deluge of rain seemed to play into the Aucklanders hands, with New Zealand representative and team captain Cody For-syth taking control. The game was still wide open going into the sixth and fi nal chukka with the scores locked at 5-all.

“It was a very even contest, closer than the score suggests,” said tournament organiser, David Edgar. “Kihikihi lived up to their pre-tournament favouritism, attacking like crazy all the way through but came away with noth-ing to show for it.”

They now need to win their next two games against Rangitikei and Cambridge B and rely on other results going their way to make the open fi nal.

At the time of going to press, Kihikihi A were leading Rangitikei A 4-1 at halftime.

Finals on Sunday commence at 11am at Nga Rakau ground, Kihikihi. Entry for the public is free. Bring a picnic along.

In Michael Cox’s chamber column of February 23, he stated that “one heavy truck snorts and rumbles its smelly way down our main shopping street every minute of the day”.

He adds that “these trucks rattle the foundations of aging buildings” and “threaten pedestrians”, saying further that Mahoe Street is the obvious option.

These fi gures and descriptions present a rather horrifying scenario to say the least, and one which quite frankly as a frequent main street user, I cannot relate to.

As a Mahoe Street half-resident (cor-ner), I thought I had better take a more objective look to see just what might be in store for us should these snorting beasts be forced along our street.

My visual observations and actual 20 and 30 minute counts spread over dif-fering times and differing days suggest nothing like one per minute.

It takes about 10 minutes to walk the length of this area and back, dur-ing which time one should see 10 heavy

trucks - very occasionally yes but also very occasionally none at all.

A fair average over a whole 9am-5pm period would be half the number.

So, is it 60 per hour or 30? Many of my counted ‘heavies’ travelled

into or out of Bank Street - certainly not practical to send them along Mahoe Street.

I have to say that Michael’s scary generalising descriptions were most unfair and I will confi dently add that, proportionately, cars and small commer-cial vehicles are far more terrifying for pedestrians than are the heavies!

It is noted that the 2005 report of Opus Consultants estimated heavy vehicle main street usage at a fi gure consider-ably higher than mine - so where are we wrong?

Are our defi nitions of the heavies well astray?

“Snorting, rumbling and rattling of building foundations” strongly suggests the real heavies - the trailer tankers, stock trucks, bulk carriers etc and these

form the basis for my observations.The consultant’s very detailed report

emphasises the problems that exist with every one of several suggested diversion routes and quite obviously any ‘quick fi x’ action would be most inadvisable.

One option includes a Mutu/Mahoe intersection roundabout, which would involve land purchase - seemingly a bit of all four sections involved.

Of course, we would all like to see our main street free of heavy traffi c and of course I would be objecting (on Michael’s fi gures) to any diversion to Mahoe Street. But if we are to realistically weigh up the options we must be aware of the facts.

I would think that some main street chamber members might have been em-barrassed by Michael’s article and sug-gest that he ‘walks the walk’ - he could be surprised.

I emphasise here that the crux of my concern is the need for fair and factual statements at all times - this issue is far too important for anything otherwise.

I am disgusted with the person, or persons, obviously from Ohaupo or its environs, who persists in dropping off rubbish at the metalled area by the Forkert Road railway crossing and in the adjacent long grass.

Bags of putrid rubbish, including the contents of a freezer, unwanted house-hold goods, concrete blocks, shrubbery material and grass clippings have all

been left there at different times. This is an area where many of the

Ohaupo residents walk and to see it used like this is very offensive.

It is bad enough that the general trav-elling public see fi t to cast their McRub-bish, lolly papers, empty bottles etc in the environs of Ohaupo.

When out walking, I pick these up and take them to the rubbish bins on Ohaupo

Road.However, I cannot deal with the large

amounts of rubbish which at present are being discarded in this very public place.

Wake up, Ohaupo citizens, we have a lovely village, let’s stop despoiling it and let’s keep an eye out to see just who is the culprit.

The National Pipe Band Championships take place in Hamilton’s Claudelands Showgrounds this Friday and Saturday, returning to the city after 26 years.

Waipa District councillor and Hamilton Caledonian Society chief Gaidyn Flay put together the organising com-

mittee on behalf of the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band As-sociation. The committee has been actively engaged in ar-ranging the prestigious event for 18 months.

The programme features 43 bands, including fi ve from Australia and nine of New Zealand’s juvenile bands, a to-

tal of over 1000 musicians.Grade 3 and 4 bands com-

pete on Friday, plus all bands set off at three minute inter-vals in Rostrevor, Vialou and Liverpool Streets for the street march from 3.30pm until about 6pm.

Juvenile and grade 1 and 2 bands compete Saturday.

The competitions close with the Grandiose Celtic Carnival from 4pm until 8.30pm, featur-ing Highland and Irish dance, Celtic groups, mace fl ourish-ing, the Central North Island Youth Band, band displays, Drum Major fi nals, the March Past and Massed Bands, pres-entations and the fi nale.

Gateway open for College studentsBy Dean Taylor

Te Awamutu College hosted local em-ployers on Tuesday evening to engage support for Gateway, a new programme to the school in which senior students are placed in work experience positions.

Careers advisor and Gateway co-ordina-tor Christine Dickson explained that it was the fi rst year Te Awamutu College has qualifi ed to be part of the programme, which has been running in various New Zealand schools for six years.

The aim is to provide a meaningful pathway for secondary students from school to workplace training by placing students with employers and providing learning outcomes and qualifi cation op-portunities.

Mrs Dickson says unlike some previous work experience schemes, Gateway stu-

dents have a fairly rigorous set of criteria to follow and are expected to earn credits towards possible career training.

The Government funds the programme and provides resources through its Quali-fi cations Framework and the tertiary Education Commission.

It is up to schools to build on existing partnerships to develop and maintain new relationships with employers and Indus-try Training Organisations.

Te Awamutu College already has pro-grammes successfully placing students with local employers, and these estab-lished relationships are providing a plat-form for the launching of Gateway on a wider scale.

Mrs Dickson says the gathering of em-ployers was a chance to explain the basics of Gateway, encourage employers to think

about participating and answering ques-tions they might have about their role and responsibilities.

The programme is designed to allow stu-dents to participate in almost any fi eld.

A contract is negotiated which includes a work programme of about 80 hours over 10 weeks, assessment tasks relevant to the position, established assessment cri-teria and expectations of the student and employer.

Gateway has established responsi-bilities for employers relevant to the programme, which overcome some of the normal workplace requirements which could prohibit participation.

Students are not paid for their par-ticipation in the workplace, so it is also an economical opportunity for employers to recruit school leavers.

Gateway - how does it work?

● A Gateway Placement Agree-ment is signed between the school, employer and student.

● A Learning Plan is formulated which shows the Units/Achievement Standards that can be earned.

● Parents, students, the school and employers are all informed of the agreement and plan so everyone knows what is expected.

● The school has funding to assist employers not qualifi ed or experi-enced to undertake assessment.

● In a situation where the Gateway placement is not effective for what-ever reason, the placement can be amended or the student withdrawn.

Te Awamutu College signed up 12 prospective employers on Tuesday, but would like to increase its data-base. The programme will run in terms two and three.

The successful shifting of the old Pirongia School library block on Tuesday was the culmination of a great deal of hard work and co-operation by a wide range of individuals and organisations.

The building had to be re-moved to make way for a new library/resource block and it has been ‘picked up’ by Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society

“There was a lot of behind the scenes work, and a great deal of goodwill and good, old com-munity spirit from Pirongia,” says society chairperson, Clare St Pierre.

The old building was moved off the school grounds and re-sited on private land at the north end of Pirongia village, on its way to a permanent site once one can be confi rmed. It has a security system fi tted.

“I would like to thank Peter and Shirley Kewish for gener-ously offering us a temporary site and for McFall Enterprises

for their prompt support with site preparation,” Mrs St Pierre says.

Funding for the relocation of the building has come from the Pirongia Darts Club ($5000), Pub Charity ($5000), Trust Waikato ($5000), Environ-ment Waikato’s Environmental Initiatives Fund ($5000), the Perry Foundation ($4000), pub-lic donations and fundraising by Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society.

Mrs St Pierre says the Pirongia Darts Club donation was humbling and the ‘icing on the cake’.

She says Waipa District Council staff and councillors have given outstanding assist-ance over a number of months, as has Jack House Transit.

“Alasdair MacMartin from Jacks deserves a medal.

“I would also particularly like to thank members of the public who gave donations. We received $1930 in total, which

helped balance the books, and we are most grateful to Pirongia Voluntary Fire Force for offering us their Boxing Day fundraiser.

“At one stage, we needed to seek private funds as security while awaiting the outcome of funding applications, and the generous response to that re-quest is greatly appreciated.

“The openheartedness of Pirongia School Board of Trus-tees in allowing us extra time to relocate the building needs to be acknowledged as well. “

Mrs St Pierre says Pirongia Lions Club, Purekireki Marae, Kauhanganui, Pirongia Resi-dents and Ratepayers Associa-tion, Waipa Networks and the Bell family also deserve special mention for their assistance and co-operation.

“I would like to thank the building committee which has doggedly persevered to bring this project to fruition - all of them are heroes in their own right.”

As contractors work their way through Kihikihi laying the pipework for sewerage connections to indi-vidual properties they have won the respect and gratitude of home-owners.

Over 100 of the 700 properties due to be connected have had their pipework in-stalled.

In many cases there is little room to work with alongside build-ings and hand digging is needed.

But laying the pipes up to the septic tanks is just part of the job.

The restoration of lawns, gardens and hard surfaces is just as important - and certainly to homeown-ers. Contractors have been doing their best to keep disruption to a minimum and to make rectifi cation as good as possible.

While six gangs work on the installations, eight gangs are car-rying on with putting in the main lines. All pump station struc-tures have been com-pleted and electrical work is being carried out.

Waipa District Council engineer Mark Woodward says everything is on track for secheduled com-missioning in June, weather permitting.

Oberlin-Brown (18) has contin-ued to make an impact on the New Zealand rowing scene since leaving Te Awamutu College at the end of last year.

Rowing in Te Awamutu col-ours for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre he had an outstanding regatta at the New Zealand Rowing Championships

staged on Lake Karapiro, picking up a gold and a bronze medal.

Together with Mark Troup-Paul, Graham won the light-weight pair in a smart time of 6:50:84 and was third in the light-weight double (7:02:05).

Although not picking up a medal in the single, he placed a creditable fi fth in the U21 A Final.

New Zealand selectors obvi-

ously took note of his perform-ance, as he was the youngest rower named in the Under 23 National Selection Trials being staged this week.

If chosen he will be looking at a place in the New Zealand team which is heading to the World U23 championships being held in Belgium during July.

The team is due to be an-nounced today.

A delegation from FISA, the International Row-ing Federation, will arrive in Waipa this Friday as part of Rowing New Zealand’s bid to host the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

Their visit is the next phase in the bid process and the delegation will assess the merit of holding the event at Lake Karapiro.

The delegation will visit planned accommodation for the 2010 event on Saturday.

On Sunday they will attend the Secondary Schools North Island Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro (which features a number of Te Awamutu College rowers).

That evening they will attend the Waipa District Council civic reception in Cambridge, where fi ve of the area’s rowing world champions, along with coach Richard Tonks will be inducted into the Cambridge Walk of Fame.

On Monday and Tuesday the delegation will at-tend bid application meetings in Cambridge.

FISA will present their recommendations to row-ing’s member nations at the FISA Congress held at the end of August and from that the Congress will vote on who should host the 2010 World Rowing Championships. It is unusual for FISA’s recom-mendation to be overturned.

A women’s social group that meets monthly at Te Awamutu Bible Chapel has changed its name to ‘Golden Hearts’ to refl ect the warmth and maturity of its members.

The name was changed from ‘Ladies Friendly Hour’ because the morning programme now runs longer than an hour, from 10am to 11.30am every second Monday of the month.

About 30 women attend the meet-ings for the 50-plus age group, usually starting with a café-style social time before listening to a guest speaker, sharing interests and getting to know new friends.

Sometimes those shared interests can take a meeting by surprise, like a display of an original Paddington

Bear and bear-friends that are part of a collection of more than 300 bears.

The woman presenting the collec-tion said it all began when her hus-band remarked: “You can have any teddy bear in the shop!”.

Other presentations have featured a school singing group, a slideshow of one woman’s horse trek in Africa, duets and other performances.

The focus is to provide an interest-ing and spiritually encouraging time. All women are welcome.

Golden Hearts’ next meeting is on March 13.

They will look at childhood photos of yesteryear.

Rallying for RwandaAnyone who has seen

Hotel Rwanda will have some understand-ing of the scale of kill-ing that went on in the country during 1994.

Around one million people were wiped out during the violent 100-day rampage by the Hutu majority in an ef-fort to exterminate the Tutsi minority.

The brutality has left an indelible mark on survivors and an ongoing impact on the country.

A decade on there is still much to be done, in an effort to restore Rwanda, so a global mission has been in-stigated based on ‘100 Days of Hope’.

In New Zealand two teams plan to visit the country as part of the project Hope: Rwanda

Te Awamutu resident Sue O’Brien is part of a team, which includes other adults and teen-agers, from Te Kuiti.

“It is our vision to

serve and help the people of Rwanda who have endured unimagi-nable pain.

“We want to learn as much as we can through a hands on approach - assisting with building projects, helping in schools and getting involved in ag-ricultural projects.

“To do this we need help. I have been fundraising since No-vember last year and still have some dis-tance to go with fi nance

before I can leave with the team in June.”

To assist Mrs O’Brien’s efforts, a lo-cal fundraising event is being held in Te Awamutu on Sunday.

The evening will be held at The Church (corner Racecourse and Ohaupo roads) from 7pm and will feature hip hop dancers, ’06 Parachute artist Cas-sia Donovon and NZ Ikon fi nalist Adam O’Brien.

During the evening Mrs O’Brien will show snippets from a promo-tional DVD and explain more about the project.

“I would like to ex-tend an invitation to Te Awamutu people to support this evening. There is no admission charge - there will be a collection - but you can simply show your support for the project and fi nd out more by attending.”

Locals can start St Patrick’s Day in style this year and support Te Awamutu College rugby at the same time.

A special Irish breakfast is being staged at The Redoubt Bar and Eatery from 7am on March 17 and features two Irish sporting person-alities as guest speakers.

Former Irish international athlete and navy man Billy Carter together with Irish women’s rugby interna-tional Aisling O’Brien will address patrons.

Munster has a proud rugby his-tory and is famous for beating the All Blacks (12-0) in 1978.

Chef loves working at TaylorsNatalie Kane carried out part of her training at Tay-

lors Restaurant, so is enjoying being back at the Te Awamutu restaurant as the new chef.

After completing her training at the Waikato Poly-tech, where she gained her Certifi cate in Catering and her Professional Certifi cate in Cookery, Natalie worked at a restaurant and a cafe in Hamilton.

More recently she completed her fi rst year City and Guilds exam with Diligence (90%).

Natalie has made a welcome return to Te Awamutu and loves working at Taylors as it offers a range of op-tions for customers and a wealth of opportunities for her to try different styles of cooking.

“At my previous jobs I was concentrating on just one type of cooking, but here I do everything from confer-ence lunches and afternoon teas for meetings to wed-dings and outcatering for parties.”

Taylors has a large number of bookings for wed-dings, with people taking advantage of the lovely grounds and spectacular views as a setting for their special day. Up to 250 people can be accommodated.

Natalie serves lunches from 10am to 2pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and dinners from 5pm. The restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday unless prebooked for a special occasion.

Plenty of food, fun at local festivals There are two local events next

week that focus fi rmly on eating and enjoying yourself outdoors.

The Te Awamutu Primary School Fair and Food Festival on Thursday March 16 (not this week as earlier advertised) is a great outing for the whole family.

Plenty of favourites include steak sandwiches, hotdogs, chips, sau-

sage sizzles, ice blocks, cake stalls and icecreams.

In between ‘courses’ there are raffl es, lots of rides, a bouncy castle and white elephant stall to check out. The evening gets under-way at 5.30pm.

LIONS FESTIVALTe Awamutu Lions Club is stag-

ing its annual Food and Wine Festi-val on Saturday, March 18.

It features a range of food and wine sales, as well as live enter-tainment, at Selwyn Park (next to the Information Centre) from 10am - 6pm.

Around 160 budding Dean Barker’s and sup-porters converged on Lake Ngaroto for the North Island Secondary Schools teams racing champi-onships.

Fifteen high schools provided teams of six children plus reserves and adult management personal, including Hamilton Boys’ High School and Waikato Diocesan School for Girls.

But it was the additional 16th team (known as Waikato Combo), comprising children from several different Waikato schools, who took the overall honours.

Mahurangi (Warkworth) won the trophy, lim-ited to single school teams, in a tight competition from Tauranga Boys.

St Cuthberts was the fi rst girls team after another close sail off with Westlake Girls (North-shore).

All the teams were identically set up under the supervision of Ross Sutherland.

Yachts were distinguished by their sail colour, three of each of six colours.

A race consisted of one school sailing a set of three boats (common sail colour) against another school.

The races were short, around eight minutes was the target time around a reverse ‘S’ shaped starboard course.

One point was awarded for being fi rst over the fi nish line, two points for second etc. The team with the lowest numbers of points won the race.

“Boat handling skills, strategy, tactics and a good knowledge of yachting rules and their ex-ploitation were all part of the armoury necessary for a winning team,” said regatta spokesperson, Ross Wren.

“Races were typically very close, some with a little boat contact that was severely penalised.

“Infringing of the rules resulted in a voluntary 360-degree turn or, if not taken, an umpire en-forced a 720-degree turn.”

The umpires were certainly on the ‘ball’ but were also there to coach after each race.

Within two fl eets, teams sailed against each other giving a total of 56 races on Saturday in 14 to 18 knot winds from the south west.

Sunday’s activities were modifi ed due to light winds, but the winners were still determined on the water by mid afternoon.

The light winds tested both the sailors and of-fi cials.

Preparations for the North Island Secondary Schools’ teams racing regatta started months ago.

More recently, Waikato sailors had been putting in many hours of training in double-handed yachts - some in secret.

Regatta activity started in earnest at the lake on Friday with additional training in the 420s.

Several marquees were erected, volleyball court installed, camp-ing ground marked and the clubhouse generally setup for the infl ux of sailors and supporters for the 16 team regatta.

By 8am on Saturday morning all the yachts were rigged and ready to go, a massive fl eet of patrol and support craft tethered to the wharf awaiting the start.

The wind kicked in by 1pm and sailing contin-ued non-stop through to 6.30pm.

For the team of skilled offi cials, starters, um-pires, coaches, fi nishing and results personal, it must have been like a 48 hour yacht race.

But their careful preparation saw the largest regatta in many years at Lake Nga-roto very successfully hosted.

Mighty River Power supplied four marquees, along with others from Bayer and Hookers (Te Awamutu).

These were essential to the onshore manage-

ment of the regatta. Hamilton and Cam-

Te Awamutu athletes struck gold big time at the South Pa-cifi c Masters Games based in Hamilton.

Debbie Weal, competing in her fi rst ever duathlon, won the 40-45 age group gold medal.

She burst onto the scene last April winning the women’s Spe-cial K Triathlon at Karapiro at Waikato University in January this year.

Five members of Te Awamutu Masters Swimming Club collec-tively won 13 gold medals, four silver and one bronze.

Elizabeth Captein and Mary Brewer both collected four gold in their respective 70-79 and 60-69 age groups - Captein excelling in the backstroke and breaststroke, while Brewer was dominant in backstroke, breaststroke and the individual medley.

Diane Walton claimed a brace of golds and silver in the 50-59 age group, competing in the fl y, breaststroke, individual medley and freestyle.

Ronnie Stevenson collected a full set of gold, silver and bronze medals in the 60-69 age group backstroke and freestyle events.

Warren Main excelled in the fl y, winning two gold and one silver in the 40-49 age group.

Te Awamutu YMI Badminton Club members came away from their Games competitions with a fi st full of medals.

Life member John Kewish scooped four golds and one sil-ver.

He claimed two of the golds, partnered by ex club member Peter Houghton, now living in the Bay of Plenty.

They won both the 60-plus

open grade and social grade men’s doubles.

Kewish also claimed gold in the social mixed doubles, part-nered by Tokoroa’s Marie De Gros, and over 60 teams event.

His silver was in the over 55 social grade mixed doubles.

Houghton and Anna Taylor (Hamilton Masters) won bronze in the 60-plus mixed doubles.

Paul Davies, partnered by Mike Perkinson (Hamilton Mas-ters), won gold in the 35-45 year men’s doubles. He collected a sec-ond gold in the same age group teams event.

Gayle Hobbs won bronze in the 50-55 mixed doubles, part-nered by David Bell (Hamilton Masters), and silver in the teams event.

Te Awamutu Marathon Clinic members featured prominently in the 21km walk from the boat house in Grantham Street, Ham-ilton.

Audrey Douglas (55-59), Kees Van der Poel (75-79) and Josie Pollard (70-74) all won gold in their respective age groups, while Colleen Williamson (60-64) collected silver.

Douglas also claimed a bronze medal in the duathlon (5km run, 19km cycle, 2km run) at Hor-sham Downs.

MASTER BLASTER: Te Awamutu Sub Union rep batsman Malcolm Seekup returns to the ‘pavilion’ after plundering the Northern Thames Valley bowlers for 44 runs. 0680617AD

Te Awamutu Sub Union senior representative cricket team made a positive start to the Waikato Valley Court Cup competition beating Northern Thames Valley by 72 runs on Sunday.

The newly-formed Sub Union side is made up of players from Te Awamutu Sports, Pirongia, Otoro-hanga, Piopio and the Waikato Punjabs.

Te Awamutu amassed 275 runs in 50 overs after being sent into bat fi rst at the Cambridge High School.

Openers Richard Douch and Mark Harrison made a slow, steady start before both were dis-missed in the ninth over to Northern’s opening bowler Steve Taylor with the total at 29.

Rajveer Singh (69) and man of the match Mark Thorsen (55) gave the innings momentum with a splendid 110 run third wicket stand - both making the most of the short boundaries.

Thorsen and Richard Parsons (23) then added 47 runs, only to see both batsmen dismissed in con-secutive overs. Thorsen has scored 197 runs in his last fi ve innings, averaging 49.

Two further wickets fell quickly, leaving Te Awamutu 196/7 with 10 overs still remaining.

Hamish Crooks steadied one end while Malcolm Seekup smashed a quick-fi re 44 (fi ve sixes), includ-ing 24 off one of left-arm spinner Calvin Hewitt’s overs.

Calvin claimed three wickets but conceded 80 runs off his 10 overs.

Ten sixes and 28 fours were struck in all by the Te Awamutu batsmen.

In reply, Northern reached 37 from 13 overs be-fore losing an aggressive Sam Cooper for 27, and another wicket in the following over.

Pressure exerted by the Te Awamutu bowlers kept Northern’s run rate below four an over for most of the innings.

Opener Owen Roper anchored the innings before fi nally being bowled in the 46th over for 76.

Northern were bowled out for 203 in the 47th over with Amey Sane contributing 32.

Opening bowler Jared Bayly easily made the transition from club cricket to representative level, again impressing with fi gures of 3-29 off 10 overs.

Andrew Parsons claimed two wickets in his 10 overs, while conceding only 31 runs, and Thorsen completed a good double with a brace of wickets.

Next week Te Awamutu Sub’ play Southern Thames Valley at Matamata High School.
