BY GRANT JOHNSTON WAXING LYRICAL Lyrics for song Wake Up by Jesse Austin: Wake up cherish our time, Together in this life, I say it’s true, Wake up to the lights, Blind, but still we fight, I say it’s true, And when we go, I say, And when we stay, I say, And when we go, I say goodbye, For all of my days, Wake up count the stars, To find out where we are, I say it’s true, Wake up fill our heads, With tales to soon be dead, I say it’s true. The title of the award winning song written by Jesse Austin might be Wake Up, but the Pirongia-based student was look- ing to catch up on lost sleep this week. Jesse’s song was performed by his band SundayBest at the 2013 Smokefreerockquest National Finals in Auckland on Saturday night. The St Peter’s School three piece band won the The Lowdown Best Song Award with the prize being to have their song pro- fessionally recorded. SundayBest was also placed third in the bands final, winning $3000 in musical equipment from the Rockshop. Jesse performs vocals and bass, while other band members are fellow Year 12 students Charlie Verberne (lead vocals and electric guitar) and Chris Milson (vocals and drums). The top six bands and top two soloists in New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, all original youth music contest played off the Raye Freedman Centre in front of a capacity crowd. The judges — Welsh producer Greg Haver, The Edge assistant PD Clint Roberts, Tanya Dean from NZonAir, OpShop drummer Bobby Kennedy and Pluto lead singer Milan Borich agreed easily on the soloist and the top three, but found it harder to rank them first, second and third. Jesse says he and his fellow band members were happy with their success and felt it showed that their many hours of practice had amounted to something. For the past month they have been knocking out five 90 minute sessions each week in the lead up to the big night. Jesse says Sam Trenwith from Hamilton has helped the band immensely, while on a personal level he has enjoyed great support from his parents, Graeme and Helen Austin. He has come a long way since appearing as the lead in Pirongia School senior production four years ago. The band will be eligible to enter again next year and in the meantime they are looking for- ward to recording Wake Up later this year — and catching up on lost sleep. It’s been a big 25th anniversary year for Smokefreerockquest, with the change in format to include a solo-duo category, 654 entries playing off nationwide, founders and directors Glenn Common and Pete Rainey receiving MNZM awards for services to New Zea- land music, and stars from Kimbra to Dave Dobbyn paying tribute to the contest and the role it con- tinues to play on the Kiwi music scene. It was third time lucky for three piece band A Bit Nigel, from Taupo and Rotorua, who took out this year’s top band prize, along with solo winner, Harry Parsons from Cambridge. Continued page 8.

Gardens get new watering systemPlants at the Te Awamutu Rose

Gardens should feel perkier thissummer following the installationof a new watering system.

The $12,000 watering system waspart of a wider garden review thatlooked to make the running of thegardens more efficient.

By analysing and monitoringirrigation output, soil types androot depth Waipa District Councilhas been able to more accuratelycare for the plants.

Council’s Group Manager Ser-vice Delivery, Barry Bergin saidbetter knowledge and planning willmean the roses have less disease(fungi infections) on foliage whichin turn means council uses lesschemicals on the plants.

‘‘If we do this well it also meanswe better manage a finite watersupply, especially in the summermonths when accurate wateringmeans no waste and the roses stillthrive.’’

About 1700m of pipe and 180 newpop up sprinklers also means lessmaintenance and water loss fromthe old above ground structure.

The sprinklers water about 1500rose plants in 55 beds.

Lions’ pride oversterling service

TC031013CA03

TE AWAMUTU Lions President Doug Carson (right) congratulates John Glossop on his Lloyd MorganAward.

Te Awamutu Lions Clubrecently recognised the service ofJohn Glossop by awarding him aLife Membership of the LloydMorgan Lions Clubs CharitableTrust.

‘‘The LMLCCT was set up inmemory of New Zealand’s firstInternational President of theworld-wide Lions Clubsorganisation‘‘says Alan Taylor,Secretary of Te Awamutu LionsClub.

‘‘The Lloyd Morgan Life Mem-bership Award recognises out-standing service to the Lionsorganisation and the communityat large by Lion John Glossop ofTe Awamutu.’’

Mr Glossop joined Te Awa-mutu Lions in 2005 and quicklybecame an active member in allclub projects and activities.

‘‘He took up leadership roles invarious club committees and pro-jects, including organising theannual Food & Wine Festivals andco-ordinating the work of theclub’s ‘Kai Kart’ at National FieldDays.

‘‘He is a very dedicated clubmember who can be relied upon tocomplete all responsibilities hetakes on,’’ says Mr Taylor.

‘‘He has a particular skill insupporting and encouraging othermembers to also play their part in

club projects.’’ After completing ayear as Vice-President, MrGlossop became Te AwamutuLions Club President in the2011-2012 Lions year.

He then spent the followingyear as Immediate Past Presidentin supporting and mentoring thenew President and elected Boardof the Club.

‘‘Following the closure ofParawera School, Johnspearheaded a project thatresulted in the playground fromthe closed Parawera School beingrelocated to Castleton Park bymembers of the Te Awamutu andKihikihi Lions Clubs.

‘‘This was a project thatinvolved a lot of consultation andnegotiation with the previousBoard of Trustees of ParaweraSchool, the Waipa District Counciland also the companies and Lionsmembers who actually carried outthe work.

‘‘Once the Playground projectwas completed — John theninitiated a new stage to the projectthat involved the siting of twoseats (one at Castleton Park andone adjacent to the children’splayground by Te AwamutuEvents Centre) as a memorial totwo long-standing Te AwamutuLions Club members (John Berryand Norm Martin) who recently

passed away. ‘‘The successfulcompletion of these two projectswas due to the sound leadershipand dedication shown by John —and the Te Awamutu Lions Clubwas thrilled to initiate the processfor him to receive this well-deserved award.’’

Change of officersTe Awamutu Lions celebrated

their annual change of officers witha Christmas theme, which seemedappropriate on such a cold night.

A decorated Christmas tree, col-oured lights and table decorationsadorned the room, while membersand partners dressed to the theme.

The evening also includedChristmas carols, mulled wine, atraditional Christmas meal and aspecial guest from the North Polewho distributed gifts.

Incoming President DougCarson ran a quiz, while RosetownLion Melva Carter cleverly themedthe incoming team to parts of a carand particularly limousines torelate to Mr Carson’s business.

Highlight of the eveningincluded the awarding of a LloydMorgan Award (detailed above) andMick Foster being inducted as a newmember.

Chance to help developNational Wetland Centre

A meeting is being held at Ohaupoon Monday night to form a volunteergroup to help restore the Rotopiko/Serpentine wetland reserve anddevelop the National Wetland Centre.

Residents will have seen the tallgreen fence snaking its way across thepaddocks at the Rotopiko/Lake Ser-pentine Reserve on SH3 south ofOhaupo.

Built by the National WetlandTrust, the fence is part of anambitious project to eradicate pestanimals, restore the reserve, andbuild a National Wetland Centre.

The fence has been built aroundEast Lake — one of the best peat lakesin the Region — and a stand of ancientkahikatea trees where a long-tailedbat was recently recorded.

It also includes a restored giantcane rush bog, where the elusiveHoudini moth lives.

Other wildlife confirmed at the siteincludes Australasian bittern and

North Island fernbird.Once pests are removed their num-

bers are expected to climb, and otherthreatened species may be re-introduced.

The Trust is welcoming the publicto join them in this exciting ventureand is particularly keen to have TeAwamutu and Ohaupo residents comealong to the meeting to form a‘Friends of Rotopiko’ group.

Members of the friends group canchoose whether to be simply keptinformed via a newsletter, or tobecome an active member.

Active members can choose from arange of volunteer opportunitiesincluding restoration activities(planting, monitoring, speciestranslocations, track building),wetland centre design/exhibits/edu-cation activities, fundraising/eventsorganising and much more.

Volunteers will not only get a senseof satisfaction contributing to

improving the environment they canalso meet new people, learn newskills, keep fit, and enjoy time out-doors in a lovely setting.

Working as a volunteer is also agreat bridge to re-enter the workforce,or to boost the CV of young job-seekers.

Already dozens of students from TeAwamutu Intermediate have beenplanting and monitoring wildlife atthe site, setting a great example of thesort of community involvement theTrust would love to see more of.

The fence was funded by grantsfrom the Waikato River Clean-upTrust, Waikato Catchment EcologicalEnhancement Trust, Lottery Environ-ment and Heritage Fund, the WaikatoRegional Council, WEL Energy Trustand Trust Waikato.

■ Monday night’s meeting is beingheld at the Ohaupo Bowls clubroomsfrom 5.30 — all welcome.

Experts: Bad teeth hurts healthA whole range of people employed to

protect the public’s health are voicingconcerns about what will happen if thequality of Hamilton’s teeth declines dueto drinking non-fluoridated water.

In addition to the *93.5 per cent ofNew Zealand dentists who support com-munity water fluoridation GPs, hospitaldoctors, nurses, specialists, surgeons, community and public health workers, and allied health staff are urging theirpatients to vote for fluoride being addedto the water in their voting papers overthe coming weeks.

They say that having infected, weakand decayed teeth can lead to all sorts ofhealth problems — many of whichpeople don’t realise.

Waikato Hospital cardiologist DrRaewyn Fisher says: ‘‘The effects ofpoor dental and oral health can extend

to heart problems in all age groups.‘‘The Waikato region still has a

relatively high incidence of rheumaticfever and rheumatic heart disease caus-ing heart valve damage.

‘‘These damaged heart valves are atfurther risk of infection which canresult in serious illness (endocarditis)resulting in prolonged hospitalisation, often high-risk cardiac surgery, strokeand even death.

‘‘The most common reason for valveinfection is spread of infection from themouth/teeth. We not infrequently seeyoung patients present with life-threatening infection which could havebeen prevented by good dental health.’’

Meanwhile, Waikato District HealthBoard’s Paediatrics team and WaikidsClinical Unit Leader Dr Dave Grahamhad the following to say: ‘‘It is now well

known that poor oral health can resultin other preventable chronic diseases.

‘‘With a greater emphasis on preven-tion and non-invasive treatments inearly childhood, the rate of dentalissues and carries risk declines, helpingto reduce the risk of developing achronic disease later in life.

‘‘While the onus is appropriatelyplaced upon parents and caregivers toensure children have healthy diets anddental habits conducive to good oralhealth, many children are not fortunateenough to experience these basiccares.’’■ For more information on the benefitsof community water fluoridation, visitw w w . w a i k a t o d h b . h e a l t h . n z o rwww.fluoridefacts.govt.nz

SENIOR Boys’ teammember KahuWetere scores twovaluable points inthe final againstCambridge Gold.

After several seasons of try-ing, Te Awamutu College hasfinally won the SecondarySchools’ Central CountryBasketball title for both Juniorand Senior Boys’ Grades.

Their success came at theexpense of Waipa neighbours,Cambridge.

The Junior Boys final was aclosely fought affair, especiallytowards the end of the fourthquarter when Cambridge closedthe gap to just three points.

But Te Awamutu held on torun the clock down, winning 36— 33.

Captain Petera Waitai wastop scorer and was ably backedup Ricky Waitai, Tom Higgins,Tane Hutchinson and LukeMurphy.

In a mark of respect for thenew title holders, Cambridgeperformed a haka beforehanding over the Golden Balltrophy which they have held onmany previous occasions.

UPSET WINIt was the Senior Boys’ game

that proved to be a real boilover, however. Cambridge had beenthe most dominant side allseason, but fell at the finalhurdle to an enthusiastic TeAwamutu side. Cambridge heldthe lead in the opening twoquarters, albeit by only a fewpoints. The turning point in thegame came in the third quarterwhen Herewini Hohepa pulledof a flying slam dunk.

Cambridge then hit foultrouble and failed to convertopportunities, falling furtherbehind. Eventually Te Awa-mutu secured the upset win, 52— 40.

Chairman of the Te Awa-

mutu College Basketball ClubGraeme Huia says it proved tobe an amazing finals night for TeAwamutu. ‘‘What a great sightto see our teams holding alofttwo Golden Ball trophies andwhat a great way for Te Awa-

mutu College to finish theseason. ‘‘We thank the schoolstaff, parents, players, sup-porters and sponsors for makingthis season such a success andwe look forward to doing it allagain next year.’’

Top seasonfor hockey

Te Awamutu College’s6-aside hockey team had anoutstanding season winningall of their games in theGallagher 6-Aside SecondarySchools Competition.

The competition isdesigned to develop newplayers, with teams made up ofnewcomers and one moreexperienced player.

Te Awamutu Collegeteacher in charge of hockey,Melissa Thompson, says it alsoaims to introduce players sothat they will go on to competi-tive teams the following year.

‘‘As it turns out, twoplayers — Angel Howell-Campbell and Hayley Hill —learned the basic skills so wellthey moved up to play for the1st XI.

‘‘Rebecca Yarndley decidedto train as a goalie and workedclosely with coach, JillMorgan. As a result, sheplayed not only in the 6-Asideteam, she also took over asgoalie for the 1st XI when theteam moved up to B Grade.

‘‘Jaimee Hutchinson was amore experienced player whotook on the responsibility ofteam captain, a job she didadmirably. Sarah Gaylor andSamantha Hall, both new tohockey, joined the team aboutfour games into the season andto their credit slotted straightin.

‘‘The team didn’t lose agame, although they had someclose calls.

‘‘They proved to be deter-mined and always came outfighting.’’

Opportunities like this are rare so dust off the tools

and “come a looking” at this. With 8516 m² (more

or less) of land and two road frontages is this fire

damaged modern three bedroom home. Also on

the same site is a very neat two bedroom modern

The property has so much scope to add value by

those with the skills to do the work plus the size

of the land means you should investigate its sub-

This is too good an opportunity to miss out on and is

MORE women are driving tractors as the number offemales involved in the dairy industry increases.

The negative side ofmore women beinginvolved in dairy farmingis a greater number alsoinvolved in farmingaccidents involving farmmachinery.

Tractors, one of themore dangerous machinesused on farms, areinvolved in nearly 20percent of all fatal farmaccidents.

A quick look at theDepartment of Labour’swebsite also shows thatnearly every agriculturalfatality in 2012 involved afarming vehicle.

In what is believed to bethe first training of its kindfor dairy farming women, the Dairy Women’s Net-work (DWN) and agricul-tural equipment dealerAGrowQuip are bringingJohn Deere representa-tives together to deliver afree tractor and all-terrainvehicle safety workshop inTe Awamutu.

DWN executive chairMichelle Wilson saystractors and all-terrainvehicles are two of themost important vehicleson the farm, which peoplebecome very familiar withand sometimes take forgranted.

‘‘Nobody thinks theyare going to have an acci-dent, especially when youhave worked around thesemachines your entire life.

‘‘Dairy farming womenwho have recently startedworking on farm vehicles,or would like to and wantto learn some safety basics, will find this training day a

great investment of theirtime because they will usetheir learning a lot, includ-ing sharing it with theirfamily and farm team,’’Mrs Wilson says.

AGrowQuip chief oper-ating officer AlanCottington says thecompany’s connectionwith John Deere, whichhas an international repu-tation for product safety, has secured productspecialist Sarah Ross fromBrisbane, and New Zea-land territory managersMark Hamilton-Mannsand Ben Suffield to deliverthe workshop.

They’ll also be joined byrepresentatives fromHazardCo, LowerEmissions andAGrowQuip.

Mr Cottington says inthe past two yearsAGrowQuip has seen ashift in purchase behavi-our from quad bikes tosafer all-terrain vehicleslike the John Deere Gator,

because of safety featuressuch as roll cages, two-person seating and seatbelts and storage capacityfor transporting toolssecurely around the farm.

‘‘We’ve certainlynoticed that the larger cor-porate farm operations aremuch more safety con-scious in their purchasingdecisions and are movingaway from quads andATVs,’’ Mr Cottingtonsays.

Two tractors and twoGators will be operating atthe regional workshop andparticipants will gethands-on learning.

The Te Awamutu work-shop is on Thursday, Octo-ber 10 at Ag-Research,Farm Road (off Te MawhaiRoad), Tokanui. It is opento all women working inthe dairy industry andtheir families.

OUT ON HER OWN: Rebecca Petch enroute towinning the senior girls’ under-15 nationalteam trial at Te Awamutu BMX track onSunday.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Rebecca Petch displayed all her worldclass attributes winning the New Zealandsenior girls’ BMX trial — clinching thecaptaincy for the upcoming test seriesagainst Australia to boot.

The national age group champion did notdrop a lap all day on her hometown trackwhile trialling for the national team.

The test series is being held at TeAwamutu’s Castleton Park track at LabourWeekend in conjunction with the NorthIsland Championship.

The Pre North Islands were held inconjunction with the test team trials at TeAwamutu on Sunday, attracting riders fromas far afield as Invercargill.

Racing was hard and fast all day, makingfor some great spectator viewing.

Mighty 11 team triallist Mason Jamesfought back from a crash in one of his heatraces to make the final, only to get caught upin traffic, unable to get himself into the allimportant fourth spot needed to make theteam — missing out by two points.

Only the top two 15-year-old and top two14-year-old riders make the senior boys’ andgirls’ teams.

Senior boys’ team triallist Josh Smith (15)went tantalising close to feature in the testseries, coming up short by just one point.

His club-mate Clay Merito (14) rodeoutstandingly to secure one of the spots inthe national team.

Courtney Brunton was also on form butwas up against the likes of Petch and currentWorld No. 2 Zoe Fleming who took out thesecond spot up for grabs in the 15 year girls’team.

All of the other Te Awamutu triallistsheld their own against top class opposition.

As well as the trials, there was age groupracing for everyone.

Many of the local riders made finals, several of them making it onto the podiumwhich augurs well for them picking up a titleat the North Island champs in a month’stime.

OVER THE MOON: Matthew Smith celebrates being selected as a ‘Global Messenger’ to spread theSpecial Olympics message.

SpecialOlympiangoingplacesBY COLIN THORSEN

‘Barriers need to bebroken and people’s

mindsets aboutSpecial Olympics anddisabilities need to be

changed.’MATTHEW SMITH

Te Awamutu’s MatthewSmith is going to be one of thefaces of Special Olympics NewZealand in 2014.

The 19-year-old has beenselected for next year’s NationalAthlete Leadership Programmeafter being nominated as a ‘Glo-bal Messenger’ by SpecialOlympics Te Awamutu.

Smith went for an interviewin Wellington (flew by himself)and sat in front of a panel todeliver his three minute speech.

Special Olympics Te Awa-mutu chairperson, Shelley Blairsays the news of his selection isabsolutely fabulous.

The purpose of a global mes-senger is to promote, educate andinform about the mission, philos-ophy, benefits and direction ofSpecial Olympics through publicspeaking and public appearanceson behalf of Special OlympicsNew Zealand.

‘‘Since being part of SpecialOlympics Te Awamutu,Matthew’s confidence has grownconsiderably,’’ says Blair.

‘‘His swimming is outstand-ing.

‘‘He races against himselfeverytime in the pool and is just

getting better, making him adefinite candidate to nominate asfar as we were concerned.’’

The responsibilities of a Glo-bal Messenger is to attend GlobalMessenger workshops that focuson goal setting and leadership, media relations, public speaking, future planning, attendingscheduled presentations, speeches and appearances.

Matthew’s speechHis speech presented to the

panel at the interview in Well-ington:

Kia Ora, my name is MatthewSmith and I represent SpecialOlympics Te Awamutu.

I first heard of Special Olympicswhen I started High School atHillcrest High, Hamilton.

I participated with the otherstudents from the I.L.C in differentsports, including aquatics, soccer, basketball, ten pin bowling andathletics.

In 2010 Special Olympics TeAwamutu had an open day which Iattended with my mum and then Ijoined swimming.

When I first started I didn’t

know how to swim properly butShelley, our coach, patientlytaught me week after week and Ihave got a lot better now I can doall the strokes.

I have also improved my fitnessand now, at training, I can swimmore than 20 lengths.

I challenge myself to improvemy swimming and my times andwhen I go to swim meets I do myvery best for myself and Te Awa-mutu Special Olympics.

We get lots of public responsefrom the articles in the Te Awa-mutu Courier — it is a good way to

get the message out into thecommunity, that we can achievegoals even though we have dis-abilities.

Without our volunteers wewould not be as successful. Theygive up their time to train us,support us, encourage us andtransport us to swim meets.

When I first started swimmingwith Special Olympics, Te Awa-mutu only had eight swimmers —now we have over 30.

When new members come wehelp them, support them andencourage them. It gives them theopportunity to not only swim butmake new friends.

If I am successful as a GlobalMessenger, I want to get themessage out into the communitiesabout Special Olympics — to tellpeople that even though we havedisabilities of all kinds, it doesn’tmean we can’t do things becausewe can.

It may take us longer but ourdetermination to achieve willmake us gain our goals.

Barriers need to be broken andpeople’s mindsets about SpecialOlympics and disabilities need tobe changed — after all we arehuman like them.

Weaver good shot atclimbing to medal

TC031013SP18

JASMINE WEAVER

BY COLIN THORSEN

Jasmine Weaver hasgood odds of medalling atthe New Zealand Climbingnational championships inRotorua.

The 11-year-old goes intoSaturday’s competition withconfidence high afterplacing first and thirdrespectively at the ExtremeEdge Regionals at Glen Edenand Panmure — competingup in the under-14 agegroup.

The youngster says shehas been competing in theolder age group in thisyear’s regionals to preparefor when she steps up tounder-14 competition in2014.

Her victory at Glen Edenwas a remarkable feat afterhaving qualified in eighthspot for the finals.

Being considerablyshorter than her olderopponents, Weaver wasunable to reach the finalhole on the wall in qualify-

ing. ‘‘It was frustratingqualifying last, the pre-defined route was set up‘reachy’ for the taller girls,’’says the Year 7 student at TeAwamutu IntermediateSchool.

‘‘Fortunately, the routechanged for the finals —being more suited to theshorter people, but the tallergirls could do it if strongenough.’’

As it turned out, Weaverwas the only climberamongst the finalists to

reach the summit of theformation, clinching firstplace outright.

She is after her secondnational title in 2013 at Roto-rua, having taking outClimbing New Zealand’sunder-12 National Cupseries in August with winsin Rotorua and Christ-church.

She will have two climbsto qualify, followed by thefinals climb off.

Doug McCauley, one ofher personal coaches atExtreme Edge in Hamilton, says Weaver’s ability is onthe improve all the time.

‘‘Jasmine is one of thoseclimbers who alwaysimpresses those watchingher in action. I think she willdo well both at the weekendand when going from toprope climbing to lead climb-ing next year.’’

McCauley says leadclimbing is a lot tougher, requiring more strength andtechnique. ‘‘Jasmine willhandle it with aplomb.’’

“Let me just start off by saying this:I have no interest in Formula 1, or even cars

in general. None. Zero. Zip. Don’t get the appeal, you know?

So I wasn’t too sure about this movie. I went to see it with trepidation, feeling that there was a good chance I’d be bored rigid by racing jargon for at least half of the thing.

Boy, was I wrong! A stunning fi lm visually and with a story that is truly inspiring, I should say at the outset that I knew nothing of the story before seeing the fi lm, but I don’t think I will

see a better fi lm this year”.

“The fi lm is one big adrenalin rush and the emotional wallop it delivers is its biggest

surprise. You don’t have to know anything about racing or be a Formula One fan to

experience the whole gamut of emotions in this powerful and highly moving fi lm,”

says Louise.

R U S H R13“A really smashing good and vibrant true story. It’s much, much more than a racing car picture. You will become

completely absorbed. Now add this fi lm to the other amazing

it is far superior to Cars in every way”. “The numerous aerial sequences were breathtakingly executed and edited”.

“It has good humour and some great race scenes. A neat fun fi lm aimed at|

Oktoberfest celebrationMost people have heard of Oktoberfest,

the 16-day festival held in Munich,Germany to celebrate the area’s longtradition of brewing excellent beer.

It began in 1810 and is now one of themost well-known events in the world, withmore than 6 million people flocking toMunich to attend the festival during themonth of October every year.

Other cities around the world now alsohold Oktoberfest celebrations, and thisyear a ‘mini’ Oktoberfest event will bepresented by the Hamilton Civic Choir inthe form of a special concert on Saturday,October 5.

This event will feature the ‘singen’ morethan the ‘trinken’ although, with theinvolvement of local brewer Good George, there certainly will be some good beeravailable.

The choir will perform a wide variety ofmusic including a series of traditionalmadrigal-style songs which are at least 200years old.

Many of these are rollicking drinkingsongs, though some are romantic andsentimental. From the classical genre,

Mendelssohn’s beautiful settings of poemsand folk-songs and Brahms’ Love SongWaltzes will provide tuneful contrast.

Choir members are brushing up theirGerman pronunciation and a team isworking on special costuming, lighting anddecor to enhance the ambience of theevening.

And, as a German festival just wouldn’tbe right without an Oompah band.Hamilton’s trumpeter extraordinaire BillStoneham has rounded up some willingbrass band players to provide this essentialelement throughout the evening.

To add to the fun, audience members areencouraged to dress up in Springtime orGerman style as well.

Patrons will be seated cafe style at tablesto enjoy the canapes, initial drinks (beer, wine or juice) and dessert treats which areincluded in the ticket price, and furtherdrinks will be available from a cash bar.

■ Hamilton Civic Choir’s Oktoberfest, SaturdayOctober 5 starting at 7:30pm, Performing ArtsCentre at Southwell School, bookings 027 4721062.
