Waipa Mayor says Police letting towns down

Waipa mayor Jim Mylchreestsays New Zealand police shouldstop “relying on statistics” andsimply admit Waikato police hubsare failing smaller towns.

Mr Mylchreest is exasperatedthat repeated calls from the Cam-bridge community for a return to24-hour policing in the town arefalling on deaf ears. He has againbacked calls from Cambridgeleaders who this week demanded areturn to 24/7 policing in the town.

Currently Cambridge is ser-viced from a police hub based outof Te Awamutu, despite a rapidlygrowing population and a dram-atic increase in serious crime.

“For goodness sake, our councilraised this issue formally with theNew Zealand Police back inAugust last year. When we didn’tget answers then, we wrote to theMinister of Police in October,” hesays.

“Finally, after an OIA request,we got a response back in Januarywhich was frankly, pretty hopelessand didn’t address any of theissues we raised.”

“Since then, what’s changed?Nothing — absolutely nothing.Meanwhile, we’ve got ram-raidershaving a field-day in Cambridgeand Te Awamutu and in fact,across the country.”

Mr Mylchreest says his com-munity did not accept that Wai-kato police hubs, which servicerural towns from one central

police station, were working.“I don’t care how efficient this

so-called hub system is. It is simplynot delivering the kind of serviceour community wants, certainlynot in Cambridge and not in TeAwamutu or our other townseither,” he says.

“People want to feel safe andsecure and know that if the policeare needed, they’ll be there. Theconstant feedback I’m getting isthat people and business ownersare feeling very vulnerable. Peoplehave told me they have simply

given up trying to call the police toreport anything because ninetimes out of 10 police advise they’reunable to respond fast enough, orat all.”

He says he believes that as aresult, local crime statistics weresimply under-reported. This con-cern had been raised with theMinister of Police but it “disap-peared into the ether”, he says.

“So I’m sorry, but I don’t haveany faith at all in claims that themodel of police hubs is workingand delivering a better community

service. And I feel sorry for policeon the ground who are doing theirvery best but are being forced towork within a fundamentallyflawed system — and they knowit.”

Mr Mylchreest says this wasn’tjust a Waipa issue, but was some-thing the whole country needed tobe concerned about.

“My community has beenincredibly patient but enough isenough. The whole model of hubsis fundamentally wrong and needsa serious rethink.”

The intersection of Rolles-ton and Whitmore streets inKihikihi was the scene ofanother crash on Tuesday —w i t h s o m e r e m a r k a b l ec o i n c i d e n c e s a n dsimilarities to a crash in Maylast year.

It appears a group ofwomen tourists were travel-ling south in a Mazda2 andfailed to give way at theintersection and were hit bylocal man Laurie Lunjevich,who was driving eastwards.

The Mazda was rolled onto its roof in the impact.

Luckily no one was seri-ously hurt in the crash,although all parties weretransported for observationat Waikato Hospital in two StJohn ambulances.

It was Mr Lunjevich’s sis-ter Julia McCullough, andher husband Michael, whowere involved in a similarcrash at the same intersec-tion last year.

They were also headingeast and crashed into twoSwedish tourists in a rentedSpaceships Campervan afterthey also had failed to giveway, this time travellingnorth. Their van spun 180degrees into a bank. Again,luckily, there were no seri-ous injuries.

The worst crash was inAugust 2010 when two Otoro-hanga men died after thevehicle they were passengersin failed to give way andcrashed into another car.

Not wearing seatbelts,speed and alcohol werefactors in the tragedy.

Women ready for Oxfam walk

For the second successiveyear Sophia Powell has pulledtogether an unlikely group ofwomen from all walks of life tocompete together in the 201750km Oxfam Trailwalk.

The Amazing Greats Quattrois lead by local Ms Powell andincludes Rebecca Rappe, an Aus-tralian living with her dairyfarming husband in Morrins-ville, Juliet Henderson, origin-ally from Te Awamutu now liv-ing in Matamata, and NicoleCavanagh who is also local.

The team’s supporters whomake sure all the girls’requirements are met on the dayare Carrie Henderson fromPirongia and Nicole Joyce fromTe Awamutu.

The team of varying fitnesslevels will bring out the trueessence of the Oxfam Trailwalkby testing the girls both mentallyand physically.

Originally a military trainingexercise designed by the Queen’sGurkha Signals Regiment in 1981to test teamwork, endurance anddetermination, these women saythey are ready to show everyonethat they too have what it takes.

Horrible weather plagued lastyear’s event, making some partsof the course slippery and dan-gerous so the team leader ishoping for better weather thisyear.

But regardless of whether it israining or sunny both climateswill have its challenges.

“Last year’s continuous rainbrought wet feet and chafing thatcaused unsightly blisters andloss of toenails for some of thegirls,” says Miss Powell.

“But if its sunny this yearthen dehydration, sunburn andheat will be major factors to

watch out for”.The Oxfam

Trailwalk is beingheld in Whaka-tane on the week-end of March25-26.

With the eventnearing its duedate the team havealready completeda 30km trainingwalk, so are ingreat spirits andbelieve that the50km’s will be eas-ily achieved.

Miss Powell isalso confident thather team can beatlast years’ time of11 hours.

The Oxfam Trailwalk allows18 hours for the 50km race,divided into three legs. Thewomen will walk 16.3km for thefirst leg over the WhakataneHeads and down into Ohope,18.9km for the second leg walk-ing the entire length of Ohopebeach and back and 14.8km forthe final leg from Ohope back toWhakatane.

They will also combat a fewhills on the way reaching aheight of over 200m.

Along with all the training thegirls are undertaking they mustraise funds for the cause whichallows Oxfam New Zealand tohelp the people of the Pacific areacreate lasting solutions for com-bating poverty.

Miss Powell has set a target of$3000, which will allow the teamto start at 6am and hopefully givethem the advantage of not beingout in the open in the hottest partof the day when doing the beachleg of the course.

The team thanked BobCullinane from Insight DrivingTechnologies for the team’sshirts, Osborne’s Transport forbeing a major sponsor for thesecond time, Martin Johnsonfrom DLF Seeds for feeding themon Friday night before the raceand Carpet Court Te Awamutufor sponsoring their two staffmembers.

The team is already over the$200 mark, but the women areseeking public help to reachtheir target.

Jessica Brown from CAB TeAwamutu says they are inter-ested in people from all walks oflife, ages and backgrounds.

“You would be fully supportedwith initial and ongoing learningas you come up to speed with thechallenges and satisfactions ofbeing a CAB volunteer,” saysMrs Brown. “You’ll also besupported by colleagues and ahuge range of resources includ-ing a referral database listingmore than 35,000 organisations.It’s incredibly rewarding being aCAB volunteer.

“When volunteers are askedto describe what they love mostabout being involved with Citi-zens Advice Bureau, most say it’sthe range of issues that you get tohelp people with.” The tasks arevaried.

“On any given day, you couldbe asked about tenancy rights,locating a support group orhaving documents signed by aJP, to finding out whether aperson is entitled to a benefit.You work alongside your clientto give them the information thatthey need to take action and dealwith issues themselves.”

Kiwifruit Vine Healthhas signed an agree-ment with the Minis-

try for Primary Industries tohelp reduce the damagingimpacts of the four mostcommon biosecurity threatsto the kiwifruit andkiwiberry sectors.The operational agree-

ment under the GovernmentIndustry Agreement forBiosecurity Readiness andResponse sets out the con-tractual arrangements ofhow industry and Govern-ment will work together tomanage potential pests.“This means the kiwi-

fruit and kiwiberry sectorsand MPI can work togetherto manage and help reducethe impact of a number ofpest threats on our sector,which has exports of almost$2 billion per year,” saysKVH CEO Barry O’Neil.“There are a number of

biosecurity threats facingour industry. The Psa incur-sion which impacted us from2010 cost the kiwifruit indus-try $1 billion. With thesigning of this agreementwe have committed to doingeverything we can to stopanother Psa-type event fromoccurring.”The agreement

establishes the operationaldetails for readiness andresponse activities and cost-sharing arrangements, todeliver better biosecurity

outcomes for the kiwifruitsector. It includes the rolesand responsibilities of all theparties, including how jointactivities will be cost shared.The GIA partnership cur-rently has 14 partners fromacross Government and thewider primary sector, whohave agreed to worktogether to jointly managebiosecurity threats.“The GIA partnership

equipment out there and I thought itcould be done better,” she says.“As a vet I knew about animal

a vet for more than 10 years, saidmany farmers told her they dislikedtube feeding.The products, which took more

than two years to develop, have aflexible tube and easy-swallowsafety tip designed to flex around a

Mr Stapleton trained as ahairdresser at Auckland Hair-dressing School and was anaward winning hairdresser froma young age.

Mr Stapleton was based inSydney for a number of yearsand still has an interest in abusiness in Darling Harbour.

Waikato Regional Council hasreceived just over 1000submissions on Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: Proposed Waikato Re-gional Plan Change 1.

Chief executive VaughanPayne says the number ofsubmissions received are well inexcess of that for any other planchange process undertake by thecouncil to date.

“The number of submissionswe’ve received are reflective ofthe complex issues we face inmanaging water quality in theWaikato and Waipa rivers andthe depth of feeling in our com-munity about this issue.”

He said he was pleased thecommunity had taken the oppor-tunity to have their say on theproposed plan change, developedby the 24-strong CollaborativeStakeholder Group which wasmade up of community and sec-tor appointed representatives.

“The closing of submissionslast week was another big mile-stone for this vital project, devel-oped by our community andaffected sectors to restore waterquality in our Waikato andWaipa rivers,” he says.

“This is also another big stepon the journey to giving effect toTe Ture Whaimana o Te Awa oWaikato (The Vision and Strat-egy for the Waikato and Waiparivers) adopted by Governmentas part of Treaty Settlementlegislation.”

Mr Payne said the councilwas now focussed on enteringand summarising submissionsand continuing to work with

sectors and industry to try andresolve issues ahead of anyhearings process which willhappen later this year or inearly 2018.

Submissions closed on March8 and submission summariesare expected to be complete andavailable by the end of June.The council will then be callingfor further submissions askingsubmitters to indicate whetherpeople support or are in oppo-sition to the summarisedsubmissions.

Independent commissionerswill be appointed to hearsubmissions and advertising forregistrations of interest forthose roles will happen withinthe next month.

The council is also still work-ing through a consultation pro-cess with Hauraki iwi authori-ties. An agreed consultationplan is likely to see recommen-dations relating to the partiallywithdrawn area of HealthyRivers/Wai Ora made by June2017.

Once recommendations aremade on the partially with-drawn area, the council will re-notify that portion of the plan,along with highlighting anychanges. Council will also pro-vide landowners in the areawith information so they canalso submit on the withdrawnarea of the plan.

The council intends to mergethe two processes at the earliestpossible opportunity, so thatthere is only one hearings anddecisions process.

Sanders is hoping for a deadsix track or better today.

“That would be good for her. Ifshe handles the track, she’s a

good chance.”Fanatic showed her class win-

ning the New Zealand Oaks lastyear. She has backed up in 2017placing fourth in the WellingtonCup, when carrying 57kg, andsixth in the City of AucklandCup.

Crucially, she drops to 54.5kgtoday with Mark Hills, who wonthe Oaks on her, again aboard.

Hills has a great strike rate,despite not getting a lot of rides.

“Mark can ride the weightwhich makes a big difference,”says Sanders.

“We’ve got an ideal weight,only 1.5kg above the minimum of53.”

Fanatic placed second of 15last start in the Marks Ewen &Associates Kaimai Stakes over2000m at Matamata on February25, beating one of her Cup rivals,Gentil Tonton who will be riddenridden today by top Australianjockey Blake Shinn.

Shinn has also picked upthree other rides.

“Our runner is in good shapeand I’m hoping for the best . . .the weather is something we’vegot no control over,” saysSanders.

The local stable currently has24 horses in work, includingLaddie Of Oakview who is astarter in the last race at Ellers-lie today.

Girls and boys aged six to 10years are ‘having a ball’ partici-pating in Te Awamutu Cricket’ssoftball grade which runs on aFriday night at Te AwamutuCollege (Factory Road ground)from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

“The emphasis for this agegroup is fun activity in a con-trolled environment,” says org-aniser, Ken Seabright.

“While this is all happening,parents are encouraged to lend ahand organising or relax andenjoy a picnic dinner on theboundary.”

All equipment is provided and

the sessions are free.The games are played with a

soft ball, plastic bats and plasticwickets. Pads are not required.

The season runs for these 20or more cricketers for anotherfortnight.

It’s great to see cricketflourishing at this level in TeAwamutu.

Currently, we only have aYear 7 and Year 8 team playing inthe Hamilton/Waikato Valleycompetition, along with a TeAwamutu Sports Year 10 teamfrom the College competing inHamilton.

At senior club level, Te Awa-mutu Sports, Pirongia and Te

Awamutu Marist field one teameach in the Waikato Valley clubcompetition.

It’s a far cry from the halcyondays of the 1980s when juniorcricket expanded to 40 form oneand two teams in Te Awamutuunder Murray Wilson’s leader-ship — when he first becameinvolved in junior cricket here in1975 when little or no juniorcricket was being played.

Another boom period was2003 when more than 200 boysand girls aged six to 10 wereinvolved in a Milo Kiwi Cricketprogramme on Thursdays atAlbert Park.

The children were taught the

basics of batting, bowling andfielding by Midlands coachingco-ordinator Neil MacRae, for-mer Northern Districts and New

Zealand representative GrantBradburn and a number of Milocoaches employed by WaikatoValley Association.

Te Awamutu’s six-strong SoldierShred Alpha team outgunned abumper field winning the 67kmsection of Taupo’s Great Lake Relay.

The Smiths Sports Shoes/Asics-sponsored Length of the Lake Relaycatered for teams of five to eight whocould either run or walk to completethe eight legs from Pukawa on thesouthern end of the lake back toTaupo.

Alpha’s Te Miringa Rapana,Tana Muraahi, Hitiri Turner, AlbertMudaliar, Huriana King and AaronMills were first home in 5hrs 14m50s, heading a field of around 100teams. There was daylight back tothe second placed team who finishedmore than 15 minutes behind thewinners.

Turner completed leg one (15km)and leg seven (4.7km), Mudaliar legtwo (10.2km) and leg six (8km),Muraahi leg three (8.6km), King legfour (7.4km), Rapana leg five (6.1km)and Aaron Mills leg eight (7.5km).They each received a winner’s goldmedal and prizes.

“We were pleasantly surprised towin by such a wide margin,” saidTurner. “It was an excellent buzz,the atmosphere was positive andthere was so much support fromother teams and spectators.”

Soldier Shred entered threeteams — Alpha, Bravo and Charlie.Turner said the Alpha team wasgeared to go hard, while the othertwo teams were there to give it theirbest shot and complete the race.

“To some of the competitors, thiswas no walk in the park.”

Bravo placed 30th in 7hrs 39m 43sand Charlie (composite team ofwalkers/runners) 25th in 8hrs 29m52s.

Osment/Donaghy werenever headed after scoring athree on the opening end. Theyall but had the title in the bagafter securing five shots onend nine and a brace of threeson ends 11 and 12 to lead 20-5.

They were equally ruthlessdispatching John Hastie/JeanWallis 25-7 in 15 ends in thesemi-final. Trailing 6-4,

Osment/Donaghy went intooverdrive, scoring 21 points,while conceding one.

Taylor/Drnasin had earliertaken a life off Hastie/Wallis,winning their quarter-final21-10. The match swung Tay-lor/Drnasin’s way in themiddle stages when they out-scored the opposition 13-1 overfive ends to lead 16-6.
