No1 at No8 wire creationsFor the second time in as many years

since being hosted by Te Awamutu Mu-seum, the Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art Award has gone to a Waipa artist.

Cambridge artist David Pronger took away the fi rst place prize of $3000 for his sculpture entry ‘Tectorum’, an elegant full sized screen inspired by the plant thatching rush.

Last year the award was won by Te Awamutu artist Lynne Stone.

The award was announced at the opening of the exhibition last Wednes-day night as part of the Waipa Networks Rose and Cultural Festival.

The Te Awamutu Museum received 25 entries from around the North Island.

Organisers chose 15 fi nalist pieces. These can be viewed at the Te Awamutu Museum until January 20, 2005.

Irene Wilcox of Waihi won the $1000 second prize for ‘The Old Kete’, a wire kete with mussel shells, and $500 was

awarded to F.M Stevenson of Te Awamutu for her third place winning piece called ‘Herons’.National Fieldays Soci-

ety chairman, Gary Kerkin said “This year’s artists have introduced a mix of

art and designs that range

from the intricate to astonishing simplic-ity.”

“The three winners portrayed simplic-ity and beauty of form refl ecting our his-

tory and culture,” he said. There is also a People’s Choice Award

worth $500 which will be announced at the end of the exhibition.

Kids have a goRunning in conjunction with the No8

Wire National Art Awards is the All Wired Up exhibition for students.

The event has been organised by Mu-seum education facilitator Liz Hamill.

Schools selected their best works for judging by last year’s No8 Wire Award winner Lynne Stone and her team of De-lyce Storey and Con Emery.

They were looking for the imagination and inventiveness of the students in their use of wire.

The works are on display until Thursday, December 9.

Students from participating schools Te Awamutu Intermediate, Pirongia, Leam-ington and Southwell (pictured left), parents and teachers, plus prize sponsors attended, the opening and prizegiving on Thursday evening.

Te Awamutu College celebrated a successful year, recognising senior students who achieved in academic, sporting and cultural fi elds, at the annual prizegiv-ing in the Te Awamutu Events Centre.

Principal Barbara Cavanagh encouraged students to achieve highly at school and into the future.

She gave examples of the school days of several leaders, includ-ing one Helen Clark, who used to travel to Te Awamutu College for cooking classes.

The top academic award went to someone certainly aiming to be a ‘high fl yer’.

Dux Maria Captein plans to join the Air Force and her ultimate goal is to become an air electronics operator.

Maria is a cadet in the Air Training Corps (Hamilton) and has already passed a pilot’s test as the fi rst hurdle to a career in the Air Force. She now has to wait until March to face the selection board.

Maria says her initial interest in planes came via her father - he was the fi rst to congratulate her when the Dux for 2004 was announced.

She was fi rst in sub-ject for History, English, Science, Physics and received a certifi cate for effort in Mathematics with Calculus.

Maria was also recog-nised for completing the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and received the Senior Council Cup for

Humanities. Proxime Accessit

(runner up to Dux) was Head Boy Samuel Christopher, who also picked up the General Excellence Cup.

The two awards rel-fected his ‘huge’ year academically, culturally and socially within the school.

He was fi rst in subject for drama, painting, phys-ed and Spanish.

He has had consider-able success in public speaking and debating, played a lead role in the

school production, was part of the school band and was a fundraiser for ‘Canteen’ (benefi ting teenagers with cancer).

Ms Cavanagh also recognised his role as a role model and ambas-sador for the school.

Samuel has been ac-cepted into the Elam School of Fine Arts to further his painting talents. He will also be undertaking a BA, ma-joring in Spanish.

His ultimate goal is to be an exhibiting artist.

Other major awards:

Top Academic Year 11 student: Peter Bet-schart

General Excellence Year 12: Claire For-sythe

Top Academic Year 12 student: Jordan Mc-Farlane.

Top Academic Year 11 Maori student: Maria Stockman.

Like their counterparts all around the country, Te Awamutu returned service men and women avidly watched television coverage of the parade to the ‘Tomb of the Unknown Warrior’ in Welling-ton last Thursday.

Te Awamutu Returned Services Association held an informal Armistice Day Ceremony at Anzac Green Cenotaph at 10am (held an hour earlier than usual to enable attendees to take in the live coverage of the 11am Wellington parade at the RSA Clubrooms and share a free luncheon).

Armistice Day ceremonies are normally held on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, to commemorate that day in 1918 when the guns fi nally fell silent and the Great War ended.

A number of wreaths were laid on the Cenotaph at Anzac Green.

More than 100 people attended the event (over half of them World War II veterans) and many made their way back to the clubrooms afterwards.

RSA manager, Bill Lydford says the event was so popular there are now plans to stage an Armistice Service each year at Anzac Green followed by a luncheon at the clubrooms.

Self confessed ‘born again’ photographer Trish O’Brien has de-cided to produce her own Te Awamutu cal-endar featuring local personalities, complete with their mottos for life.

She says the calendar has been a means of enjoying, and sharing that enjoyment with others, some of the personalities around our town which give it character, and make the place special.

Two of those person-alities are Edna (Keep active, keep busy) and Elvis (You only live once, so go hard).

M r s O ’ B r i e n says it was a wonderful opportunity to practice portraiture and the whole exercise was a great learning experience, and loads of fun.

With assistance from professional photog-rapher Michael Jeans and computer wizz Marcus Gower, Mrs O’Brien produced the 2005 calendar as a lim-ited edition series.

Half of the numbered 100 copies have been pre-sold. Remaining copies can be ordered by contacting Mrs O’Brien (871 7742).

CALENDAR ‘biker icons’ Edna (above) and Elvis as they appear in the 2005 limited edition calendar. Since these shots were taken Edna’s bike has been tragically stolen. The distinctive red bike with white basket was taken from outside a Park Road address last Wednesday.

Cruise hits the newsFrom page 1.

Greg Taylor of Kawhia Harbour Cruis-es collected passengers in his boat to return them to Kawhia.

Alan Rutherford aboard the Margaret J towed the Lady Kawhia back to the wharf.

Mr Taylor says the passengers were all wearing lifebelts and seemed relatively com-fortable throughout the experience. Some chose to stay aboard the Lady Kawhia for the return to the wharf.

Mr Taylor says the tramping group from Cambridge had al-ready enjoyed their three hour tramp earlier in the day and one remarked that they had come looking for adventure and cer-tainly found it.

He says once the anchors were hauled up it was revealed that an abandoned com-mercial fi shing net was preventing them from striking the bottom and stopping the boat from drifting.

The Lady Kawhia is a classic 66 passenger cruiseship kauri ferry that was built in 1949.

She formerly did service as a tourist boat in the Auckland Viaduct, before being brought to Kawhia late last year by Kawhia Heritage Tours.

With problems solved it is back to business as normal, with 66 chil-dren tour groups being taken out tomorrow and Thursday.

My partner and I were travelling into town re-cently.

He had his vehicle and I had mine. He was follow-ing behind me. I had a nasty motor vehicle accident and my partner rushed over to attend to me.

I was very shaken and dazed (not realising at that point I was injured)

He then put me into his vehicle and proceeded to his work to ask his boss for an hour off to take me to the doctors to get me checked out for injuries.

He was refused and told they could not spare him. There was a gentleman that said he could take me to my mother. I was still very confused and dazed and he took me there. For his help I am very grateful.

My mother then took me straight to the doctors where I was examined. I have my arm in a sling, my leg in a brace and a neck brace and taped ribs. Also mild concussion.

Upon arriving back at my mother’s I then had to ring my partner who was understandably worried.

Why I am writing this? To me an hour does not seem like a lot to ask for under these circumstances, but I guess that to a company that time is money. Money being more important than a person’s wellbe-ing. I would like to hear from other company bosses.

Would you have given your employee an hour off to make sure his partner was going to be OK?

Or would you practice the same policy as this one?Name with-held to protect identity

Hour off too much?

The issue of over-spending on un-needed property by Waipa District Council is well documented.

When I last met with the WDC they were gear-ing up to buy a derelict property at Kihikihi for an overvalue as it was thought by Cr Emp-son that a community service group might be prepared to take it on as a project.

Given the way that the WDC treated the last proposal to build a skatebowl and the efforts made by such a group, I would think

anyone would be mad to get involved with such a project. What possible need would Council have for an old neglected shack such as the once home of Major Jackson?

The property should be condemned and the vendors should sell it for its true market value to a genuinely interested restorer rather than ex-pecting the WDC to pay top dollar for it.

Mind you, the WDC has a reputation for pay-ing too much and selling too cheap.

All set for super bush weekend

All roads lead to Pirongia Forest Park Lodge this weekend for the great ‘Generation Green’ weekend organised by Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society.

On offer will be a host of interest-ing and fun activities that will allow people of all ages to ‘get back to nature’ and learn more about their natural heritage at the same time.

“It’s a weekend of living and learning centred around Mt Pirongia that grandparents and parents can share with children,” says co-organiser Clare St Pierre.

“There will be live geckos, bush ‘walk and talks’ with gurus, stream worlds, garden design to attract native birds, talks on Mt Pirongia in history, native bats and patupaiarehe (fairy folk), abseiling, confi dence course activities, lots of displays and cool competitions.”

Admission is free, and the society is encouraging people to make use of the buses which will be leaving from the Te Awamutu Information Centre in Gorst Avenue on both days of the weekend as parking at the Lodge is limited.

The return bus fare for the 19km trip is only $2, but registrations are required at the Te Awamutu Information Centre (telephone 871 3259) by noon Thursday.

There will be free snack packs for children registering for the bus and all children taking the bus must be accompanied by an adult.

Registrations will also be taken until 12-00pm Thursday for overnight accommodation, bush ‘walk and talks’, Sport Waikato confi dence course activities for children, and abseiling opportunities (children need to be with a parent or guardian when undertaking abseiling and the instructor has the right to determine whether a person may participate or not).

Please register with the Te Awamutu Information Centre so that group numbers can be anticipated and safety standards maintained.

The keynote speaker for Saturday is Bill Garland who will be speaking on ‘How environmental practices increase production’ and music will be provided in the afternoon by the Te Rore Bohemian Accordian Band.

Sunday’s keynote address is on garden design to attract native birds, and this will be delivered by bird scientist John Innes and Wayne Bennett who is an expert on the ecosourcing of native plants.

Mt Pirongia Lions Club will have food and cold drinks on sale for lunch

on the Saturday, and bring a picnic lunch on Sunday.

Morning and afternoon tea will be available as well as complimentary coffee all

weekend courtesy of Origin Coffee.

The winners of the three competitions will

be announced on the Saturday afternoon.

Entries for the photographic competition have already closed, but storywriting entries will be accepted until 11 on Saturday morning at the Lodge.

Entries for the fl ag design competition can be made on the Saturday afternoon at the Lodge, with materials provided by Creative New Zealand.

The weekend fl yer has details of each competition and these are available from the Te Awamutu Information Centre or [email protected]

People may choose to attend for all or part of the weekend as suits their needs.

If the weather is wet, the outdoor activities will not be available, but the speakers will be able to deliver their talks inside the Lodge.

Busy rider on a roll

JOY TO BEHOLD: Kelly Maclarn and her black mare Onaroll easily negotiate one of the obstacles during the crosscountry phase of the Horse Trials. Photo supplied

By Colin ThorsenIf there was a prize for the

fi ttest rider competing at the Mitavite Horse Trials at Ki-hikihi, it would undoubtedly have gone to Kelly Maclarn.

The Te Awamutu College PE teacher cycles from Te Awamu-tu to Cambridge and back most days to ride and attend to her horses on her parents, Brian and Rosy McWha’s property.

This commitment and dedi-cation paid off when she placed third on her mare Onaroll in the intermediate class at Ki-hikihi.

Maclarn improved on her dressage fourth placing with two clear rounds in the cross-country and showjumping.

The jovial ‘allrounder’ has played a multitude of sports.

She was a Waikato women’s rugby representative, until she broke her collarbone going in for a winning try ‘two or three’ years ago, and is an ex Waikato netball representative.

The fact that she holds down a fulltime job and still has the energy to do justice to so many sporting interests is amazing.

Maclarn is an experienced showjumper, now competing with success as an intermedi-ate at horse trials around the country.

She also helps the Horse Trial committee arrange jump judges for events at Kihikihi.

Her family has been involved in equestrian pursuits for many

years - older sister Monique is an ex pony clubber and showjumper.

Rosy McWha is secretary of the Mitavite Horse Trials at Kihikihi.

She goes hacking with her daughter and keeps an eye on the horses while Maclarn is at school.

They have some promising youngsters in the paddock at home.

FOOTNOTE: Ex Te Awamutu rider Andrea MacFarlane rode in the Advance competition at Kihikihi.

She was 16th after the dres-sage but rocketed up 11 places to fi fth with two good rides in the showjumping and cross-country.

Otorohanga dairy farmer sets cracking pace

Handicap start times made for an exciting Te Awamutu Sports club cycle race over a 50km course on the back roads of Otorohanga on Sat-urday.

Local dairy farmer Bryce Martin was rewarded with the win for doing much of the ‘donkey’ work.

He kept the tempo up in his group, ensuring the scratch riders had to work hard to try and catch them.

Martin prevailed with a sprint win over Marcel Te Brake, with John Rako and Callum Newlands third and fourth.

Peter Rennie outsprinted his fellow scratch riders to post the fastest time overall of 1hr 19m 53s.

Te Awamutu 14-year-old Chris Scott worked hard for his win in the junior boys’ race, pulling back the handicap riders.

Cambridge brothers Stuart Van Wagendonk (12) and Luke Van Wagendonk (10) were second and third respectively.

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Chris McGuire still manages a smile after his cycle race out to Kakepuku and back to Te Awamutu. Photo supplied.

Berry breaks squash break

Six times beaten fi nalist Ian Berry was ‘over the moon’ after fi nally winning the men’s A grade champi-onship at Te Awamutu Squash Club.

Berry had previously been runner-up to Ross Collins on six occasions and runner-up to An-drew Parsons for the past three years.

The 40-year-old had to withstand a spirited challenge from Scott Hill in this year’s A grade fi nal.

Berry won in four games but not before being extended to 9-7 in the fi rst and white-washed 9-0 in the third.

He clinched the title with a comfortable 9-3 win in the fourth game.

It was an emotional Scott Hill, who ac-cepted the Campbell Hill Memorial Trophy for the runner-up in the A grade.

The trophy is in hon-our of his older brother who ‘always’ seemed to be runner-up to Ross Collins in the A grade championship until his playing days were tragically cut short.

Berry and Hill are both B graders.

They met again in the B grade fi nal with the same result - Berry winning 3-1.

Kaye Cumming re-

tained her women’s A grade crown with a three straight games victory over the run-ner-up, B grader Do-reen O’Connor.

O’Connor went one better in the B grade, beating Deb Pitcon 3-0 in the fi nal after scrap-ping home 10-9 in the fi rst.

Final results, grades C to F:

C grade men: Doug Latham b Andrew Russ 3-0; ladies: Jennie McFarlane b Di Johnston (no score available); D grade men: Chris von Biel b Mark Buist 3-1; ladies: Tracey Payne b Karla Mitchell 3-0; E grade men: Jason Rowe b Logan Hill 3-1; ladies: Pip Gray b Raewyn Hopkinson 3-0; F grade men: winner Liam Carter; ladies: Rachel Bell b Jorja Tarrant 3-1.

Novice champions: Lisa Oldfi eld (girls), Brian Downie (boys).

Club spirit trophy: Nigel Pitcon; Catherine Living-stone Memorial trophy: Do-

reen O’Connor.Junior club champions

and runners-up:Boys: Doug Latham, r-

up: Chris von Biel; girls: Pip Gray, r-up: Ange Gray.

Youth Cup: Jorja Tarrant (girls), Cody Bowen (boys).

Most improved: Alyssa-Jayne Foster (girls), Cody Bowen (boys).

Sportsmanship: Holly Shaw (girls), Matthew Wolfe (boys).

PENNANT WINNERSTe Awamutu’s division

two women’s interclub team won the Waikato spring pennant.

In a thrilling fi nal, Te Awamutu upstaged the tops seeds Leamington on their own patch 3-1.

Yvonne Collins clin-ched the victory with a hard-earned 3-2 win over S. Houghton in the fi nal match.

The Te Awamutu vet-eran needed to call on all her experience and skill to overcome her younger opponent in fi ve sets.

She was down match ball (2-8) in the fourth game, but a determined fi ghtback saw her tri-umph 9-7, 8-10, 8-10, 10-9, 9-1.

Collins has been named in the Waikato masters team to contest the national masters teams event in Auck-land.

Results: D Pitcon lost to K Houghton 0-3, A Tuck beat B Herdman 3-1, D O’Connor beat D Fleming 3-1, Y Col-lins beat S Houghton 3-2.

This season’s Kakepuku Cup interclub tennis competition looks to be one of the most even for many years judging by early round results.

Three of the four matches in round three could have gone either way.

Kio Kio were held to a 8-all by Te Awamutu.

CDB Te Rahu scrapped in 9-7 over Kihikihi Red after narrowly winning the deciding mixed dou-bles match in a tie-breaker.

The match between Roto-O-Rangi II and Ngahinapouri also went down to the wire, with Roto-O-Rangi winning the decid-ing game in a tie-breaker.

Korakonui had less trouble ac-counting for Pirongia 13-3.

Unbeaten Hairini had the bye.In Melville Cup, Kihikihi are

the only unbeaten team after three rounds.

They beat previously unbeaten Te Rahu 12-4.

Otorohanga recorded their

second win beating Korakonui 9-7, as did Te Awamutu downing Hairini 11-5 and Roto-O-Rangi accounting for Wharepapa South 11-5.

Bangladeshis here for kickboxing nationals

By Colin ThorsenThe entry of a Bangladesh team has given the

New Zealand open kickboxing championships an international fl avour.

It’s great news for organiser, Rick Dobson who already has a large number of clubs from throughout New Zealand competing at the In-termediate School Arts and Leisure Centre on Saturday.

“Little is known about the strength of the Bangladeshis but they will certainly create plenty of interest,” says Dobson.

Local fi ghters are training hard to be in peak form, including a quartet favoured to win titles.

Brad Johanson, now injury free, is looking good for the heavyweight division.

Kihikihi’s Diana Gordon is hoping to keep her unbeaten record intact and club-mate Lisa Mur-ray is one to watch.

Waikeria Hawks’ Clint King, just back from the International Taekwon Do Oceania cham-pionships, is training fi ercely to stay at the top after beating a world champion at the Waikato regional championships.

The nationals will kick off with junior forms, where entrants demonstrate their techniques and ability in a multi-directional attack and de-fence routine against imaginary opponents.

Musical forms follow, where competitors dem-onstrate their ability to background music.

The junior fi ghters always create plenty of spectator interest.

Keep an eye out for eight-year-old Te Awamutu

Phantom Max Dobson. He is rated number one in the World Association Kickboxing Organisation’s national ratings for his height category.

From mid-day, the battles begin in the three female and four male adult divisions.

Spectators can view the day’s action for $5.

ENTERTAINMENT

Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to celebrate R.E.M.’s two live New Zealand shows next year by winning a copy of their latest CD ‘Around the Sun’, their 13th stu-dio album.

The most enigmatic band to emerge from the 80s rock revolution, and then dominate the 90s, are back on tour with their new album.

For the fi rst time since 1995 - when they start-ed their Monster World Tour here - and this time with their just-appointed full-time drummer, former Ministry basher, Bill Riefl in, R.E.M. will make their third tour of Australasia for promoter Michael Chugg Entertainment in March next year, playing New Plymouth and Christchurch.

Tickets are available from Ticketek.“It’s been a long wait for R.E.M. fans,” says

Michael Chugg, “but the band alluded back in ‘95 that they might never tour again, so the announcement is fantastic news.”

Frontman Stipe says ‘Around the Sun’ isn’t a downer of a record, but is pretty hardcore and fairly political.

Stipe says that as an American it’s not an easy time and he feels like one of the angriest pacifi sts in the world.

To be in to win simply put your name, ad-dress and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to ‘The R.E.M. Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Friday.
