To ensure an easy and smooth transport,

new motor roads and railroads are being built

in all parts of the Union. At the same time,

major bridges across rivers and creeks and

many other small bridges are being

constructed.

Myanma Railways is not only upgrading old

railroads but also building new railroads to

contribute to transport. Some sections of new

railways on the east and west bank of the

Ayeyawady river have been already

commissioned into service. As a result, the

flow of commodities is quick and trading is

brisk.

A lot of passengers and goods can be

transported in a short time by means of rail

transportation. As rail transport is cheap and

convenient, it has become a reliable mode of

transport for the public.

On 2 January, the Monywa-Bawditahtaung

section of the circular railway in Monywa in

Sagaing Division was inaugurated. It will

facilitate the commute in Monywa where more

than 250,000 people live. Thanks to the opening

of Aungtha-Bawditahtaung section of the

circular railway, people in Monywa as well as

in seven nearby villages can travel from one

place to another with reasonable fees. It also

helps the students of Technological University

(Monywa) go to their classes conveniently. Not

only that, pilgrims from all over the country

and tourists can visit pagodas and places of

interest around Monywa using the train.

Ensuring better transport is one of the most

important tasks in our bid for all-round

national development. Myanma Railways is

striving for the emergence of new railway

networks, building more than 1,200 miles of

new railroads. With the emergence of new

railway networks, transportation and trading

of regional products will become quicker and

economy of the respective regions will develop

further.

Cuba says detainedcontractor worked for

US intelligenceHAVANA, 7 Jan — A senior Cuban official says that

an American government contractor detained in Cubafor more than a month was “working for Americanintelligence.” Parliament leader Ricardo Alarcon saysthe man is under investigation but has not yet beencharged.

Neither government has identified the man who wasarrested on 4 Dec on suspicion he was handing outcommunications equipment to opposition groups.Alarcon says the man’s actions are “part of the priva-tization of war.”

US believes one in fiveex-detainees joining militants

WASHINGTON, 7 Jan — A classified Pentagon as-sessment shows about one in five detainees releasedfrom the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay hasjoined or is suspected of joining militant groups likeal-Qaeda, US officials said on Wednesday.

The disclosure comes amid revelations that formerGuantanamo detainees had joined al-Qaeda in the Ara-bian Peninsula — a Yemen-based group believed tobe behind a failed plot to blow up a US passenger jeton Christmas Day.

Under pressure to increase safeguards, PresidentBarack Obama announced on Tuesday that he had sus-pended the transfer of additional Guantanamo detain-ees to Yemen, citing the deteriorating security situa-tion in the country. But Obama said the suspensionwould not prevent him from closing the prison, whichwas opened in early 2002 by the Bush administrationto house terrorism suspects.

More than 560 detainees from Guantanamo havebeen released, the vast majority of them by the Bushadministration. An Obama administration official saidthe White House had received “no information thatsuggests that any of the detainees transferred by thisadministration have returned to the fight.”

GARDEZ, 7 Jan—A suspectedsuicide bomber has attacked a marketin the south-eastern Afghanistan cityof Gardez, killing at least seven people,reports say.

A spokesman for the provincialgovernor said the targets of the attackwere apparently Afghan securityofficials. Reuters news agencyreported those killed included thesecurity commander for neighbouringLogar province, his brother, and threebodyguards. Reports say a further 24people were wounded in the blast.

What is KNU?

I am a Kayin national, but I, on behalf of Kayinpeople, ask the above question in the title of thisarticle although the answer is obvious.

To be frank, I used to be a member of KNU formany years. I took part in the acts of the insurgentgroup due to my political concept, but I did not stickto the group’s narrow prejudiced policy. Accordingto the objective conditions, I chose the mostappropriate way to peace with which I thought I coulddo my utmost in the interest of my own state, nativeregion and own race. Objective conditions bear witnessto the fact that armed insurgency and terrorist actsshould have been no more, unlike previous policiesand programmes, which are intolerable for the people.

Yet, KNU, under the pretext of working forbetter future of Kayin race, clings on to atrocitiesinclusive of bomb attacks, massacres, armed robbery,collection of extortion money, and arson attacks. Ifeel deeply disappointed that KNU is quite pigheaded:still committing terrorist attacks. One of the atrocitiesit has ever committed is the bomb attack at the KayinNew Year Day celebration in Papun.

Every country and race in the world celebratestheir New Year Day festival on a grand scale with allseriousness. Kayin nationals not only in Kayin Stateand the Union, but also in foreign countries hold theirNew Year Day celebration with great pleasure. ANew Year Day celebration is intended to leave behindthe sins committed in the old year and to do things inthe New Year hoping for the best. So, KNU isunforgivable for its deliberate attack on a New YearDay festival. Not only I but also entire Kayin peoplecannot stand for both the offenders and those whowere behind the attack.

The terrorist attack left seven innocent peopledead and 11 injured from among those celebratingKayin New Year Day with happiness. Two of theinjured succumbed to the injuries thereafter, thusbringing the death toll to nine. The blood of thecasualties covered much of the ground where theceremony was in progress, and the incident causedbitterness among local people.

Whoever denied that KNU was behind the attack,and whatever broadcasts West media aired, we knowvery well who are responsible for the tragedies, and

Local people of Kayin State werecondemning KNU for the bloodbath, and so leaders ofthe KNU (Central) leading a life of luxury in theneighbouring country came under pressure to issue anannouncement. However, those who had returnedfrom the refugee camps like me know very well thatthe announcement was nothing more than a lameexcuse, and some points manifested in it implied thatthey were behind the attack.

In the announcement, they said that the incidentimplied a vivid evidence that lack of security in borderareas had also spread to urban areas. Therefore, it canbe deduced from the announcement that it was the rootcause of why they committed the bomb attack. It isbecause they are not happy with security and peace ofPapun that have been restored due to the shelter ofTatmadaw columns, as well as the peaceful life localresidents are leading. Their concept is that it will beconvenient for them to collect extortion money fromthe locals only if the towns and villages lack stabilityand peace and the people are completely under theirthumb. In addition, if the national race peace groupsturn more attention to community welfare service, thepeople of Kayin State will dislike KNU to a higherdegree, but support those who are in favour of peace.So, KNU disrupt the community welfare servicescarried out by ex-KNU members.

It is common knowledge that KNU leaders aidand abet the members to commit bomb attacks andatrocities in the nation, but they live in refugeecamps and towns in the neighbouring country.They claim that they are working for democracy,human rights and better future of Kayin nationals.But, in practice, they are immersed in terroristacts. Therefore, misbehavours of KNU have becomecompletely repugnant to the people.

Local people under the shadow of evilconsequences caused by KNU’s wrong conceptand conviction are now in great hunger of peace,because there is a great gap of development,stability, peace and life security between peacefulregions and unstable regions in Kayin State, mynative region.

KNU is trying to intimidate Kayin people, whereasthe Tatmadaw and national race peace groups areworking together in various fields to improve theeducation and health sectors and ensure regionaldevelopment. For instance, under the arrangementsby the Tatmadaw, well-wishers from InternationalBeverages Trading Co Ltd and peace group membersgave free health care to local people in Myainggyinguand Htotkawkoe in June 2009. In Myainggyinguunder the administration of Aphu Tha Htoo Kyaw, thecombined team gave health care free of charge to 1445with eye complaints, 902 with general health problems,and 132 with obstetric and gynecological problems,medical checks-up to 1111 with eye complaints,eyeglasses to 946 patients, and operations on 180patients, totalling 4716. The team also gave freetreatment to 474 people with eye complaints, 126 withgeneral health problems, five with obstetric andgynecological problems, medical checks-up to 242with eye complaints, eyeglasses to 225, and operationson 54, numbering 1126, from among family membersof DKBA peace group members and local people fromnearby villages.

The peace groups and national entrepreneurs areworthy of highest praise for their great generosity.Apart from giving free health care, they made allpossible arrangements in order to ease unnecessaryfears of artless locals and ensure comfort in their life.I was very pleased to view the scenes.

Members of the national race peace groups whoreturned to the legal fold like me worked in concertwith the Tatmadaw for many local eye patients toregain their eyesight. The joy I gained sharingemotional feelings of local people who had regainedtheir eyesight was indeed pervasive ecstasy beyondwords, and was in contrast with the feelings I gotlearning the tragedies in the incident in Papun. Healthcare to local people in Myainggyingu and Htotkawkoeregions is one of tangible results from peace. Thebomb blast in the Kayin New Year Day celebration isone of the countless atrocities committed by KNU.

The ultimate goal of Kayin nationals of us is toenjoy peace, not to face tragic events. I am stronglyconfident that the objective need of the entirepeople of various national races across the Unionis the same, as that of Kayin nationals of us: toenjoy stability, peace and regional development.

So, the question I want to ask on behalf of Kayinnationals is: What is KNU? The answer is that KNU’sultimate goal is to commit terrorist attacks to bemasterminded by those who focus on political gains,leading a life of luxury in the neighbouring countryand claiming movements for prosperous future ofKayin nationals.Who wants to deny that point? Theiracts reflect their real self.

According to the Korea Securities Depository(KSD), the total bond issuance of 1,489 local compa-nies stood at 75.66 trillion-won (66.6 billion-US dol-lar) worth of bonds in 2009, sharply up from the pre-vious year’s figure of 45.97 trillion won (40.5 billionUS dollars).

The total sales marked the highest level since 2005when the agency started to provide related data, theKSD added.

URGENT: Eurostar trainbecomes stuck in tunnel

BEIJING , 7 Jan—AEurostar train has brokendown inside the ChannelTunnel after suffering“traction problems”,according to mediareports.

The service, whichhad been due to arrive atLondon St Pancras fromBrussels at 08:56 GMT,stopped at about 08:30GMT.

A spokesperson forEurotunnel said a rescueengine was en-route topull the train out. Anotherspokesperson forEurostar said, “There is atrain delayed in the tunnelbut it will be on the moveagain shortly.”

In December morethan 2,000 people weretrapped inside theChannel Tunnel for hoursafter five trains suffered

electrical failure due tofreezing conditions. Thelatest breakdown followsa three-day halt toEurostar services justbefore Christmas after thewrong type of ‘fluffy’snow caused a series ofstoppages. Condensationwas caused by the snowmelting as the trainentered the tunnel, andthis in turn affectedelectrics.

It is not known if thefreezing weathercurrently sweepingacross Britain played afactor in this latestincident, but engineersin France said the heavysnow in northern Francemay have affected theelectrics. As of 10:30GMT the train was stillstuck.
