Still ahead in Marchis the Gasparilla Arts Festival, The Gasparilla Film Festival and theGasparilla Music Festival. The GAF and the GMF are held indowntown Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Park and the GIFF is held inlocal theaters including Tampa Theatre andCineBistro. Get out there, have some fun andsupport the arts.

METRO has once again partnered with theAmerican Heart Association to help raise aware-ness and help educate that heart disease is theNo. 1 killer of women — killing more women thanall forms of cancer combined. We are proud ofour 10 year commitment with the American HeartAssociation and the photo of Community Leaderswith Heart on page 50, is always fun to coor-dinate. A special thanks to all the leaders whoarrived in early December at Macy’s to havethe photo taken. Those individuals and their companies repre-sent a dedication to help spread the mission of the AmericanHeart Association.

METRO recommends two great getaways. Key West is alwaysa great getaway with a variety of festivals planned throughoutthe year, and the Pier House provides a great place to stay in thecenter of all the action. Escape to another island – Puerto Ricoand stay at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino.Downtown St. Petersburg has two new restaurants to check out —IL Ritorno, an Italian bistro and Rococo Steaks. Both of these newrestaurants add to the hot culinary scene in St. Petersburg.

Finally, St. Petersburg is hosting the Firestone Grand Prix onMarch 28 - 30. Indy cars will be racing along the waterfrontstreets and will kick off the IndyCar series.

Enjoy,

Tampa Museum of ArtGraphicstudio: Uncommon Practice at USF

By Ronda M. Parag

On exhibit at the Tampa Museum of Art is a partnershipbetween the Museum and University of South Florida thatchronicles all that has been innovative at Graphicstudio, arenowned print workshop on the campus of USF. “We arethrilled to showcase the exemplary artist collaborations andwork developed at USF’s Graphicstudio,” said Todd Smith,Executive Director of Tampa Museum of Art. “Co-organizingthis exhibition with our colleagues at USF seemed a natural fitin showcasing the finest visual art projects at the forefront ofcontemporary art, produced at this boundary-pushing researchcenter.”

The exhibit features 45 of the 108 artists who have workedin residence at Graphicstudio. Artists in the exhibition includeRobert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Allan McCollum, JimRosenquist, Jim Dine and Louise Bourgeois and more recentcollaborations with Christian Marclay, Mark Dion, TeresitaFernandez, Los Carpinteros and Trenton Doyle Hancock.

The exhibition chronicles several aesthetic and technicalconversations among artists of different generations. Oftentimes, it is the invention of a new technology that transfixes theartists in residence. Graphicstudio Former Director, Alan Eakersays that the inspiration for the Uncommon Practice name camefrom “taking something that doesn’t exist and making it real.It has always been the primary concern of Graphicstudio tomake art that was phenomenal and along the way develop thetechnology to accomplish it.”

“All of the work has been created right here in Tampa,” saidJudy Genshaft, President of USF. “The artistic expression issomething very, very, special.” Jade Dellinger curated the exhibitand is co-organized by USF Contemporary Art Museum. TheTMA exhibit is the most ambitious and comprehensiveexhibition since the early years of Graphicstudio, displayed atthe National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1991. grand dame of the neighbor-hood for more than 100 years, she still exudes dignity, grace

and leaves a lasting impression. She’sgained stature over the years and gracefullygained a bit of girth — porches and

balconies will do that — but her classic“bone structure” and quiet elegance remainstrongholds of her foundation. When Bryan and Lynn Guyton first

laid eyes on the Hyde Park bungalow at825 S. Delaware Ave., they saw themselves

at home there immediately. The couple, with their first son on the way, had soldtheir previous Palma Ceia residence andwere temporarily living with Bryan’s parentson Davis Islands, while looking for theright place to raise their family.

“It was Saturday morning and we wereheaded to Gainesville for a University ofFlorida football game. The house was noteven listed yet, but as soon as we pulledinto the driveway we knew we were sold,”recalled Bryan, a managing partner of

Morrison Grove Retail Income Fund. Afriend tipped them off to the upcomingavailability of the historic house built in1913, and they used that advantage tomake it their own home. After a few, feverish hours of negotia-

tions, the paperwork was signed and thedeal was closed by Monday. For the next20 years, the stately house would be theonly home the two sons, Marshall andCurry, would ever know. Untold numbersof parties and family gatherings would be

celebrated within its walls. Days andnights would be spent playing in the back-yard and heated pool that would later beadded to the spacious grounds. Eventually, the family expanded to include pets andthe house became the domain of the familydog, Caliber, and their orange tabby cat,Nacho Cheese. But, the time has come for a new family

to move in and the former family to moveon. After 20 years, the house has been listed. The Guytons will remain in South Tampa, but will occupy a 2,200-square-foot homecloser to SoHo, that will be a better fit fortheir changing lifestyle.“We had always talked about downsiz-

ing when our sons were ready to go to highschool and college. The house is biggerthan what we need now and going forward,”explained Bryan. “There are lots of memo-ries there, but at the end of the day, it isn’tabout the house, it’s about the family.”Marshall, 17, begins his senior year

at H.B. Plant High School later this year, leaving little time before he’s off to college.Younger brother Curry, 14, graduates fromWoodrow Wilson Middle School this schoolyear and begins attending the Plant highcampus as a freshman this fall. The Guytons have definitely left their

style stamp on their decades-long residence.Through extensive renovations, numerouscustomizations and by incorporating lots ofillumination, as in many large windows, multiple sets of French doors and bigporches and balconies, they have created acomfortable living space highlighted bywood floors, high ceilings, gas burning fire-places and striking light fixtures.Flow and flexibility are defining char-

acteristics that create a cohesive feel, andprovide options that will make this anaccommodating residence for familiesraising toddlers to teenagers. The floorplan features three bedrooms plus four fulland one half bathrooms, but an upstairssitting room can easily be converted into afourth bedroom. MThe house is currently listed for sale at

These events are all about pleasure, not treasure, musical beats instead ofstrands of beads and walking the redcarpet, rather than the plank. So getready to admire and acquire art, celebrate local musicians and viewsome fabulous films.

It is a rare chance to gaze upon an invaluable collection ofrenowned art. For two days, downtown Tampa takes on thedemeanor of a vast private art collection, or a curated multi-mediaexhibit presented by an esteemed museum.

Among the 235 artists selected by art-savvy local jurors, areprofessionals and award-winners, as well as some publiclydisplaying their art for the first time and others who rarelyparticipate in festivals.

March, 1 - 2, this one-of-a-kind art assembly will once againblanket Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park with tents filled with fineartworks, when the Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of theArts (GFA) returns for its 44th year.

It’s an impressive presentation of art representing 13different media, encompassing ceramics to sculptures andpaintings to photography. Just as impressive is the all-volunteerteam that works tirelessly throughout the year to shape thislong-standing event.

“We are 100 percent volunteers. There are no paid staffmembers. All of us involved have day jobs but we all appreciateand are very supportive of the arts. For instance, I am an

architect by trade, so the arts are implicit on what I do on adaily basis,” said Brandon Hicks, former festival co-chair andcurrent president of the GFA board of directors.

The annual call to artists generates nearly 1,000 responsesthat must be carefully screened by well qualified jurors, whotypically have an arts pedigree due to their education, workexperience or affiliation with arts organizations. Not only mustthey cull the best from the rest, jurors must maintain balanceto ensure diversity and cover multiple disciplines, whiledetermining which artists receive a coveted invitation.

Yet another juror, this one a nationally or internationallyrecognized art professional, is selected yearly to oversee theadmirable $75,000 that is awarded to artists in variousamounts. The opening day of the festival finds that jurorcarefully scrutinizing each exhibit, to determine what pieceswill be considered for a potential award.

Those picks are relocated to a room within the TampaMuseum of Art, where the juror makes his final picks inprivacy and determines the recipient of the $15,000 Best ofShow award, as well as all remaining categories.

“What makes this event sogreat is the truly high qualityof art in the show. Due to thesignificant prize money, andthe sales generated by ourfestival patrons, the GasparillaFestival of the Arts attracts manyartists who may not necessarilydo art shows on a regular basis.”——Brandon Hicks, president of the GFA board of directors

Lifelong friends who grew up together in Tampa decidedthe time was right to bring the local music scene to centerstage, and create an event celebrating the city’s homegrownsingers, songwriters and performers.

Tampa has talent, and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Parkprovides the perfect setting, and the time was right for localmusicians to shine, they agreed.

David Cox, Jeff Hunt and Phil Benito recruited morelike-music-minded individuals to grow their ranks into agroup providing skills ranging from financial expertise, tofood-related experience.

Among those sharing their passion were John Wakefield ofLykes Bros. Inc. and Ty Rodriguez, a self-professed humongousmusic fan, who feeds his listening habit by traveling the countryto attend outdoor festivals featuring global artists.

A partner in the new Seminole Heights, Rooster & the TillRestaurant, Rodriguez is now the event’s executive director, itssole salaried, full-time employee.

From the start, the original organizers agreed to focus onartists connected to the Tampa Bay community, but also bookfrom other parts of the country to create a cross-section ofmusical genres.

Gasparilla Music Festival March 8 - 9, 2014

www.gasparillamusicfestival.com

“There were no independent music festivals in town, nothing that represented Tampa or, specifically, downtownTampa,” Rodriguez recalled.

Why stop there, they wondered. The performers representTampa’s finest, so why not also offer foods prepared by local, independent vendors? In addition to signature sounds,festival-goers should also be able to get their fill of craft beersmade here and dishes from some only-in-Tampa restaurants.

It was an all-volunteer effort that successfully launched theinaugural festival, a single-day event in 2012, that returned foran even more successful encore last year, proof that thosevisionaries have sound judgement.

Six thousand plus people found their way inside thefences surrounding Kiley Gardens and the park that first year.By 2013, the numbers swelled to more than 9,000. With thefestival growing to a two-day event this year, organizers havehigh hopes of attracting capacity crowds of 10,000 per day.

In keeping with those expectations, this year’s multi-dayline-up includes headliners who will join stellar Tampa-basedsolo artists and groups. That means audiences can applaudThe Flaming Lips and Trombone Shorty, along with localnotables like Zulu Wave and 10th Concession.

“In 2013, we had 14 hours of continuousmusic on four stages, 10 national artists,21 of the best regional bands and per-formers, parading acts for engagementand entertainment and the Kid’s Festarea. Our five-year plan could see thisevent spread to multiple venues withdifferent stages ranging from Latin tocountry music. The sky’s the limit.”

Its marquee event is the annual, multi-day, mega-packedschedule of films, panel discussions and parties meticulouslyplanned and presented by the Gasparilla International FilmFestival (GIFF) committee members.

While all of the pageantry associated with red carpetcelebrity photo opportunities and access to award-winningdirectors who talk freely about their craft is fun andfascinating, there is also the invaluable spotlight-shiningmoment this event provides its host city.

Tampa essentially needs to be ready for its close-up,when noted filmmakers and producers attend this year’sfestivities. You never know who may want to cast thiscommunity in their next project.

“Every year we try to bring in more talent and morefilmmakers. While they are here, we show them aroundTampa so they can see how easy it is to film here and whatthis city offers. We try to help the local economy byencouraging these filmmakers to shoot here,” said MonicaVarner, executive director of GIFF.

Established in 2006, the festival is well regarded andwell attended, largely due to its highly anticipated selectionof independent films, including many locally produced

8th Annual Gasparilla International Film FestivalMarch 19 - 23, 2014

www.gasparillafilmfestival.com

entries, that cover a wide range of categories, originatingfrom all parts of the world and cross all genres. Organizersare also busy year-round creating events that provide localfilm buffs with a multi-cultural collection of movies, to keepthem entertained pre- and post-festival.

With a five day schedule to fill, the task of finding theright mix of films every year is rather daunting.

Films are submitted for consideration. Festivalrepresentatives also seek out films they want to presentby attending other festivals. Each submission must bescreened and scored by a selection committee. Onlythose earning the highest number of votes make the cutand get to debut to local audiences at participating venuesthat range from downtown’s Tampa Theatre, toCineBistro in Hyde Park Village, to Muvico Centro Ybor20 in Ybor City.

Exhaustive, extensive and never-ending, pretty muchsums up the process. Varner oversees a small staff that hashelp and support from dedicated volunteers who ensureeach festival is a success. But the satisfaction of showcasinglocal talent, showing off the city and shining in front ofindustry heavyweights makes it all worthwhile.

“Once filmmakers come to ourfestival they want to come back. Many of them will continue tosubmit their films to us to makesure they are invited back. It’sbecome known as a filmmakersfilm festival, but they also loveour parties and have a goodtime while they are here.”

pring break is approaching andwhy not stay close to home andenjoy all the thrills of Orlando

with its theme parks, shopping andentertainment. Plenty of memories tobe made at any of Disney World’s fourparks - Magic Kingdom, AnimalKingdom, Epcot and Disney’sHollywood Studio, or UniversalOrlando’s, Universal Studios Florida®

or Universal’s Islands of Adventure®.There are a variety of experiences forthe entire family.

For ToddlersThe easiest option is to stay on

Disney property, with three hotels thatare connected directly to Walt DisneyWorld by the monorail — The GrandFloridian Resort & Spa, the Polynesianor the renovated Contemporary.Staying right on property allows easyaccess back and forth to the park, aswell as the privilege of the Extra MagicHours, which lets you enter the parksearly or stay late.

If you do run out of something, each Disney Park does have a BabyCare Center that offers the basics anda comfortable, quite place to changeand feed the baby. We also recom-mend bringing your own stroller.

Get to the parks early. Takeadvantage of a toddler’s early morningschedule to be there when the gatesopen. The parks are less crowded andMagic Kingdom, especiallyFantasyland, is the most baby-friendly.Be sure to build in multiple breaks andeven head back to the hotel for anafternoon nap.

Head back to the park at night timeto view the colorful Main StreetElectrical Parade and the WishesNighttime Spectacular fireworks show.

At Universal Studios, SeussLanding based on the books by Dr.Suess, will provide fun for the smallkids with the Cat in the Hat ride andOne Fish Two Fish. Also fun is CampJurassic with rope bridges, play slidesand water squirters.

For TweensA popular option for those with a bit

older children, is to stay on property atUniversal Orlando. Universal Orlandooffers three resorts, The Hard RockHotel, Portofino Bay Hotel and theRoyal Pacific Resort and each has itsown décor and amenities. ThePortofino is popular with families andreminiscent of an Italian village. Thehotel has a beach style pool with sur-rounding sand, a kiddie pool, waterslide, kid club, spa, fine dining andcomplimentary water-taxi shuttles tothe theme parks. If you want to walk, itis just a quick 15 minutes on a

landscaped path. The biggest advantage to staying

on property, however is the free“Universal Express” pass. Just showyour room key and enter the fast-trackline. Having an express pass will savelots of time in long lines and allowthose thrill seeking tweens, theopportunity to ride all the rides. If youdon’t stay on property, an express passmay be purchased for an additional feeand its highly recommended.

There are three fun wet rides thatwill get you completely soaked —Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls,Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges and theJurassic Park ride.

For TeensA great place to stay with teenagers

is in a condo or in the DowntownDisney Lake Buena Vista area. TheLake Buena Vista Resort Village and

Spa, has reasonable rates and is in agreat location to the Disney parksoffering two, three and four bedroomcondo style suites. Most teens liketheir own space and having largeraccommodations with a kitchen helpswith the dining budget. It is easy for ateen to grab a quick breakfast or snackbefore heading out to the parks.

Upon entering any of the Disneyparks, check out the tote boards in thecenter of the parks to see wait times onrides. Disney does offer FASTPASS —so take advantage for minimal waittimes. Epcot with its more educationalattractions, is best for older children.

Splash Mountain, Space Mountainand of course, Test Track in Epcot, are on most of the older kids “must-do” rides. In Tomorrowland, don’tmiss Buzz Lightyear’s Space RangerSpin, that is fun for the video-gameset. Hollywood Studios provides thrills

with Rock N Roller Coaster andTower of Terror.

At Universal Studios’ Islands ofAdventure there are roller coasterrides for the daredevils in the group, including The Incredible HulkCoaster and Dueling Dragons.

The signature attraction atUniversal is the Wizarding World ofHarry Potter and its ForbiddenJourney of Harry Potter ride. It isextremely popular, so expect crowds.

The latest technology providesriders with thrills, and the sensationof flying and transporting mugglesinto the realm of J.K. Rowling’s booksand the movies they inspired. M

Rapid, ultra-low-calorie weight loss diets may sound like thequick fix you want — but you don’t want the consequences.

• At less than 1,000 calories a day, you can’t get the vitamins, protein and minerals you need, resulting in malnutrition.

• In starvation-mode, your body stops burning caloriesand starts storing calories.

• You’ll feel tired and lethargic, even if you “snack”throughout the day.

• You’ll burn muscle, not fat.

Smart Tip: Get the nutrients you need to feel great with a delicious, fresh juice from Intelligent Gourmet!

hen head chef and owner,David Benstock, left St.Petersburg for college and

then traveled around the world, little didhe know he would be back in his hometownto open up his first restaurant, IL Ritorno. The name, IL Ritorno, is fitting for therestaurant, as it means “The Return” inItalian; which is exactly what Benstockdid, returned back home, and it’s justwhat he wants his customers to do,return to his restaurant.

IL Ritorno brings a new taste of freshItalian cuisine, introducing new, interestingflavors and combinations that addelegance to a traditionally rustic genre.Working with local farmers for produce,Benstock and his staff prepare everythingfresh, with the menu updated daily.

Beginning his educational adventures

W at Florida State University, Benstock wenton to Johnson & Wales/College of CulinaryArts in Denver, CO, and then helpedWolfgang Puck open Spago in BachelorGulch, CO. Moving on to NYC and workingat The Modern, linked to the Museum ofModern Art, Benstock was looking for morein his search for food and his specialtywas found in Calabria, the southern mostpart of Italy, where, as Benstock puts it,“The food is simple, but refined.”

From a well stocked wine list, to beerand non-alcoholic beverages, the dishesthemselves will add flavor to anythingone orders to drink. Starting off with awide range of antipastis, the Capresesalad has fresh, local tomatoes, and theRoasted Candy Stripe Beets salad is astasty as it is colorful. Diners will alsowant to try the Veal Sweetbreads.

IL Ritorno’s signature dish is theShort Rib Mezzaluna, made with trufflefonduta, concentrated tomatoes andpecorino. And don’t leave without sam-pling the Butternut Squash Agnolotti, handmade from scratch, this can almostdouble as a dessert with its sage, brownbutter and topping of amaretti cookie.

Steak opened last fall and delights all thesenses. Named for an art movementdeveloped in Paris, Rococo artists creat-ed lighter, curvy, intimate and moreplayful themes in their works and that isthe inspiration at Rococo Steaks.

Previously, the building was hometo the historic YWCA and underwent athree million dollar renovation.“Restoring and renovating this buildingwas a high-risk project,” said Joe Orsino,CEO. “It begins an incredibly ambitiousgrowth movement off Beach Drive.”Rococo strives to be a bit different thanthe traditional steak house by creating a

The craft cocktails includethe St. Pete Swing, Cucumber Frescaand Jell-o Shots made with tropicalspirits and fruit.
