Save the school from closure

The number of learners admitted to r p maphanzela primary school in Thokoza is constantly shrinking - so, to save the institution from possible closure, the school is adding isiTsonga as the second additional official language.

The official Zulu language school is shrinking with a current total of 719 learners. The continual drop in learner numbers has resulted in the school losing two teachers and two support staff. Arthur Mashele, the school principal, told tame TIMES that they

are also opening admission for learners until the end of the year in an effort to save the school. He highlighted many challenges that have resulted in this critical situation leading to parents not enrolling their children at the school. “Since last year, the school has not received school uniforms from the Department of Education. We are battling to get uniforms and parents are taking their children to neighbouring schools where learners are given free uniforms. The textbook printers and shop-owners complain when we order stationery, because we depend on the order made by other schools. They are saying that the number of applicants from our school is too small. We have to wait for other schools to partner with us to make one order and it delays us in acquiring text books,” said Mashele.“We have realised that a lot of children are moving to Spruitview and other neighbouring schools. Some of the learners end up learning in Zulu and Sotho because

there was no Tsonga subject at our school. Parents, the School Governing Board and the Department of Education at District level have welcomed our introduction of isiTsonga subject and the extension of admission dates in our school,” he said. Mashele added that they will also assist the parents who do not have identity documents to acquire the relevant documents. “The school is performing extremely well, - according to last year’s ANA results, we got an 80% pass-rate. We have won many trophies in choir, volley ball and netball and we are introducing cricket and rugby next year. There is also a new library at the school sponsored by Peermont,” said Mashele.He concluded by saying the situation is demotivating the learners and educators and causing unhappiness, as they are not sure whether they will still be at the school next year. parents who want to enrol their children at the school should contact the principal on 011 860 6908 \ 082 556 5099.

Natalspruit Hospital management is appealing to the public to collect the bodies of the relatives who have died while receiving care at the institution. Some of these patients died as far back as August, but they have still not been collected for dignified burials. If the bodies are not collected within 21 days, they will be buried in pauper’s graves. Public urged to collect deceased relatives

The red Ants are usually the shack-dweller’s worst nightmare, as they are mandated to remove illegal squatters invading land and to destroy illegal electricity (Izinyokanyoka) connections.However, a recent fire, which claimed seven shacks at Cosovo Squatter Camp in Phola Park, demonstrated that some Red Ant offi-cials have hearts of gold. This time, they reconstructed seven shacks as opposed to living up to their reputation of demolishing shacks in informal settlements. It is alleged that the fire was caused by the negligence of one of the shack-dwellers who left a paraffin stove unattended. According to the victims, the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services rushed immediately to the scene; however, this did not help as the fire spread fast and reduced everything in its path to ashes. Although victims of the fire victims have been given food parcels and blankets, assistance with clothes and more food would be welcomed by the affected families.

There is a plan of action to separate the primary and secondary schools at Palm Ridge Combined Secondary School, ward 58 councillor Robert Pienaar told tame Times yesterday.

He said the Department of Education has communicated with parents and community stakeholders who have welcomed the plan, saying it is long overdue. Pienaar said the secondary school will remain where it is and the primary school will be relocated. The plan will ease overcrowding at the school.

Eden Park Online Radio rocks cyber-space

The growth of technology, which is fast turning the world into a global village, recently persuaded music producer and radio presenter Anthony Plaatjies to launch the Eden Park Online Radio Station. Plaatjies, the founder of the new venture, targets listeners among the youth as he believes they are active users of technology through social networks. For the target audience to listen to the radio, they have to log on to the website.“The radio station is a ground-breaking initiative for the people of Eden Park because it is the first radio station within the community,” he told tame TIMES. The radio content will be determined by our listeners. Music and programmes will be pre-recorded but RNB music, House, Old School and Gospel music will all get a lion’s share. On Fridays we intend to host live music shows. We are targeting about 500 active audiences before the end of the year,” said Plaatjies.The station aims to give Eden Park youngsters an opportunity to be trained in radio presenting, singing and deejaying. Plaatjies believes the station will play a role in creating job opportunities in broadcasting for local aspiring radio personalities in Eden

Park and the surrounding areas. It will also give local poets and aspiring singers a platform to recite poems and play their demos. The Eden Park Online Radio Station interacts with its audiences through Facebook and Twitter. Learners are finding it difficult to choose careers, some due to lack of knowledge about certain professions; so, to curb such challenges Palm Ridge Library recently hosted a “career choice talk” on their premises.The event targetted Grades 9 to 11: for Grade 9s to choose their subjects wisely according to their career choices, for Grade 10s to learn well in their chosen subjects, and for Grade 11s to earn good marks to gain university entrance.Roshnee Naidoo, Palm Ridge Library’s librarian and the organizer of the event, said, “We want to get the Grade 9 to 11s to make correct subject choices related to their careers. We were also making learners aware of the career opportunities available and helping them to proceed with them. So we invited different professionals to explain the requirements needed in order to pursue

their career path.”Ekurhuleni Cluster librarian Louise Vos also motivated the learners to consider librarianship as a career. She said librarians build people, careers, communities and nations. They are public servants that are at the centre of knowledge, making sure that publications with correct and relevant information are available at any given time in the library. Moroesi Mokobi, a social worker at Ekurhuleni Thokoza branch, told learners that social work is a calling to care for, love and look after the welfare of other human beings. “Social workers also empower people with knowledge and comfort, and make sure that they wipe tears from faces. We act as mediators, encouraging development and facilitate the processes for people’s welfare. To become a social worker, a learner has to pass Matric with exemption and enrol at university to study for a degree in social work. There is a lot of demand for social workers in the country and the employment opportunities are vast,” said Mokobi. Former police officer William Visser said there are different careers in the law enforcement sector which include: police officer, highway patroller, state guard, social worker, detective and administrator. He said learners who want to follow a career in law enforcement should pass Matric, enrol at a law enforcement college or university and obtain a driver’s licence. Visser added that there are many benefits in the sector such as pension funds, medical aids and free bursaries to help learners further their studies.

A man was arrested on Monday at about 03:30 am after police officers found him with a stolen motor bike.The arrests were made after the police officers received information from a community member alleging that there was a suspect wanted for a rape and attempted murder that occurred in Thokoza last month. The police responded immediately to the scene, but on their arrival the suspect was not found. The police officers became suspicious and asked to search the house. They found a motorbike suspected to have been stolen from a house in Thokoza Extension 2 in August this year. A case of possession of presumably stolen

property was opened at Thokoza Police Station and the suspect is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Court.

Beating drug addiction through sport

Drug addiction remains a major social challenge in Katlehong which affects hundreds of youth irrespective of their gender, shattering youngsters’ dreams of becoming responsible citizens. This huge social dilemma has given birth to the inaugural 67 Minutes Drug Awareness Sports Tournament.The social awareness event was held at Soccer Ground Number Four in Katlehong. Organizer Danny Sobhuza told tame TIMES that they hosted soccer Top Four for boys and Netball Top Four for girls. “Soccer teams which competed for Top Four were K1 Stars, Royal 11, Top 5 and CTM. Netball teams which took part in the netball tournament were Phumolong, Peace Makers, Baby girls and Ncala Girls. The first soccer match was between Top 5 and K1 Stars. The latter advanced to the finals by 7-6 after the penalty kick-out. In the second semi-final, which was between CTM and Royal 11, the former advanced to the final by 2-0. K 1

Stars won 3-1 in the final match against CTM Football Club and they lifted the competition inaugural trophy,” explained Sobhuza. The first netball semi-final match was between Phomulong and Peace Makers, and the latter team advanced to the finals on a 16-10 final score-line. Ncala Girls walloped Baby Girls by 18-8 to advance to the finals. Peace Makers thumped Ncala Girls 28-18 and were ultimately crowned the champions. “We promise that the event will be an annual event aimed at creating social drug awareness in Katlehong. Youth in our township are indulging in drugs at a young age - hence we are hosting the event to remind them about the danger of taking drugs,” said Sobhuza.In the football competition, K1 Stars walked home R700 richer, with a trophy, gold medal and soccer kit. Peace Makers got a trophy, gold medal, netball kit, handbags and T-shirts.

Health and fitness club widens its influence

The Thokoza Health and Fitness Club, which was established 19 years ago, hosts various programmes aimed at benefiting the different sporting codes operating in the area. Since the club’s inception in 1995, local soccer teams, individual sports personnel, schools and senior citizens from old age homes have benefitted tremendously from their programmes. Director of the Health and Fitness Club Dira Mphane said they also host classes in aerobics, bodybuilding and yoga. “We have a team of qualified training instructors in charge of various classes. Our classes run from 6am to 11am, Monday to

Saturday, while bodybuilding and physical exercise classes run from 3pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday. Aerobics and yoga classes run from 5:30pm to 7.30pm,” said Mphane. He said there are various programmes they want to roll out; but there are challenges. “We need sponsorship to subsidize the unemployed and learners attending our programmes.
