For the last 25 years fans have enjoyed their experiences at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, while athletes have enjoyed state-of-the art locker rooms and training rooms.

Considered to be one of the fi nest tennis facilities among the collegiate ranks, the modern six-court, 1,000-seat A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre enters its 27th year serving as the home to Mississippi State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams in 2010. The Centre, which has undergone several physical chang-es in the last 15 years, is named for Mississippi State alum-nus A.J. Pitts of Tupelo, Miss. The most recent change at the facility came this two years ago as a new DecoTurf surface was installed. Also included in the renovation were new fences, wind screens, umpire chairs and benches. After 10 seasons of supporting the efforts of MSU’s tennis players, the courts received a complete facelift in the fall of 1993, undergoing a total resurfacing job, which upgraded the playing surface for MSU’s Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs to top competing condition. The project was performed by the No Fault Company of Baton Rouge, La. In addition to that $150,000 project, the Centre also saw the erection of a state-of-the-art tennis scoreboard in 1993, with an approximate cost of $30,000. The scoreboard, de-veloped by Daktronics, Inc., of Brookings, South Dakota, measures 11 feet in height by 32 feet in width. The score-board, which towers above Courts 1 & 2 at the Pitts Tennis Centre, has the capability of monitoring set scores for all of the facility’s six courts simultaneously, as well as the dual match team score. Another addition to the Pitts Tennis Centre was completed in the fall of 1998 with the fi nish of a modern complex un-derneath the Centre’s grandstand, which brought many new

advantages to the State net programs. The facility houses locker rooms, showers and lavatories for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, as well as for offi cials and visiting teams. The complex also features a concession stand for fans to utilize while enjoying MSU in action. In the summer of 2001, new fences were installed around the complex, replacing the facility’s original structures. And in the winter of 2003-04, a new press box was constructed in the center of the grandstand. The Pitts Tennis Centre opened its courts for play on February 26, 1984, when MSU’s men entertained Louisiana Tech, posting a 6-3 win over their Bulldog counterparts. In 1993, the MSU men registered the 100th win in the Centre’s history with a 6-1 victory over the Florida Gators to end the regular season for both teams. MSU’s men and women have combined for a 263-199 (56.9%) record at the Centre. The Bulldogs have enjoyed a 64.0 percent (151-86) success rate in home matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre, while the Lady Bulldogs have won 49.8 percent (112-113) of their contests at the Centre. Those to-tals do not include results at home during 1997. The Pitts Centre was undergoing repair work during that campaign and all MSU matches were played at the Sawyer Tennis Courts on campus. MSU’s men are 124-50 (71.2%) at home during the last 15 seasons. The Bulldogs’ SEC home record has been just as impressive since ‘92, having compiled a 51-45 (53.1%) mark. The Bulldogs’ non-conference record at the Pitts Ten-nis Centre is 97-19 (83.6%), including a remarkable 83-8 (90.2%) mark since the 1988 season.

McCarthy Gymnasium“New Gym,” MSU’s Tennis Indoor Facility

Fifty years later, the Mississippi State Gymnasium, fi rst known as State’s “New Gym”, has transformed into the fi rst modern indoor tennis facility ever for the MSU tennis pro-gram. The long-time Mississippi State basketball facility was converted in 1999 into a two-court indoor tennis complex. The facility is being utilized primarily for practices in times of inclement weather, but also serves as a competitive are-na when matches at MSU’s primary outdoor stadium, the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, are in jeopardy. The building, which was opened in 1950, is actually one of the most storied athletic facilities in MSU history, serv-ing as home to some of State’s most successful basketball teams ever. Four MSU all-Americans played in the gym, including consensus selection Bailey Howell. The NBA Hall of Famer, who resides in Starkville, is one of State’s loyal tennis boost-ers. The gym was later named for McCarthy, a four-time SEC Coach of the Year selection, following his death in 1975. Since that time, the Bulldogs have played basketball in Humphrey Coliseum, constructed in 1975, and the old gym has been utilized primarily by MSU’s Recreational Sports department for various activities. In 1998, the MSU Athletic Department reacquired the facility for the purpose of creating a much-needed indoor area for the nationally-prominent tennis program. An ex-pansive renovation ensued and was completed in the fall of 1999.

The two courts in the Centre are a synthetic surface by Robbins. Curtains were also added in front of the existing concrete walls where retractable stands once stood. The renovation also included several structural improve-ments, including new roofi ng elements, lighting enhance-ments and repainting of several areas. The facility, which sat 5,000 fans when it fi rst opened in 1950, seats 3,000 today (since retractable seating was re-moved), and provides yet another outstanding facility for the MSU tennis program. State has already begun to add to the sports legend which is associated with the facility. Four matches were played at McCarthy Gym by the Bulldog and Lady Bull-dog tennis teams during the 2000 season when inclement weather invaded Starkville. State’s men’s went 3-0 with wins over Southern Miss, South Carolina and Auburn, while the Lady Bulldogs downed Southern Miss in their only match there. State’s women ran the teams’ combined record in the facility to 5-0 in 2001 in the only MSU match held there during the season, besting UAB 4-3. The teams combined for a 1-2 mark in 2002 at McCarthy, to bring the record to 6-2 overall in the facility. In 2003, the Lady Bulldogs played the only home matches indoors, going 3-1 to run the two teams’ record to 9-3 there. In ‘04, the Bulldogs went 2-0 at McCarthy, while State’s women went 2-2. In 2005, the teams combined for a 4-1 mark indoors at McCarthy (Bull-dogs 2-1, Lady Bulldogs 2-0). In 2006, the men went 1-0 and the women had a 1-1 record.
