Members of the OVC from 1963 to 1996, Austin Peay, citing financial concerns, became a non-scholarship program in 1997. The Governors then joined the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League from 2001-05. In Fall 2004, then-APSU President Sherry Hoppe announced Austin Peay would investigate returning to scholarship football. Six months later it was announced APSU would return to scholarship football in 2006 while rejoining the OVC in 2007. APSU posted a 3-8 record in 2006 in its return to scholarship football before recording a 7-4 record in 2007, including a 5-3 mark in the OVC. APSU slipped back to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the OVC a year ago.
