As of 2009, the award has been named in honor of Joe Laufer who passed away in 2014 at the age of 79. Laufer dedicated his life to vol- unteering and educating. He worked at Rowan College at Burlington County for 27 years in various academic and adminis- trative roles, including associate dean for business relations. He also served as a township committee member for Southampton Township and was a greatly respected man in the county. The Burlington County Volun- teer Center originally gave $1,000 in college scholarship awards to volunteers in the area who made a difference. The organization was then contacted by the Haines Family Foundation out of respect for Laufer, and with its help, the award grew to $7,500 the following year. Now with the help of this fami- ly and the funds the organization receives from the Joe Laufer me- morial fund, the award has grown drastically, and this year it has given $25,000 to four students in the area. “Going forward, we hope to find another foundation to help with the funding because it is growing increasingly more diffi- cult to narrow down the applica- tions to such a select few win- ners,” said Michael Pippen, coor- dinator at the Volunteer Center of Burlington County. Among the group of four win- ners from the 2015 class was Seneca’s own Charlie Castillo, who was given the largest prize of $10,000. “I was very surprised to hear that I was awarded the scholar- ship,” Castillo said. “To be one of the few people chosen to receive this award means a lot to me. I feel very fortunate.” Castillo will be attending American University in Washing- ton, D.C., in the fall. Similar to most private schools, the cost to attend is high so winning the grand prize was very beneficial to him. “I was surprised to hear that I please see CASTILLO, page 4

was awarded the $10,000 scholar-ship. I'm relieved that I will havesome money to pay for college, but I didn't expect to win thismuch money,” Castillo said. After going over the scholar-

ship application requirementsand the qualities of the candi-dates, Castillo believed he metmuch of the criteria the scholar-ship committee was looking for.“I've been volunteering for as

long as I can remember,” Castillosaid. His volunteering efforts have

been widespread and have im-pacted a vast crowd. His senior year of high school,

he helped rebuild a house thatwas damaged by HurricaneSandy. He volunteers at a thrift

store in Camden called ClothesFrom the Heart, and from middleschool to his early high schoolyears, he volunteered as a docentin the Dinosaur Hall at the Acade-my of Natural Sciences inPhiladelphia. Castillo has been a guest speak-

er at Rowan College at BurlingtonCounty where he spoke to stu-dents about his experiences grow-ing up as a deaf person, and hasalso served as a student adminis-trator in an organization calledHearing Optional. He helps plan events that deaf

and hard-of-hearing children andtheir families can attend wherethey can mingle and feel less iso-lated. “Contributing to this organiza-

tion makes me feel proud of myidentity as a member of the deafand hard-of-hearing community,”Castillo said.As part of the criteria to apply

for the award, students must berecommended by one school offi-cial and one non-school commu-nity leader.Castillo received letters of rec-

ommendation from his highschool guidance counselor andhis former elementary schoolteacher, who is also a communityleader who contributes to ClothesFrom the Heart as well as Hear-ing Optional.Castillo has formed a lasting

relationship with both of his for-mer teachers. “My high school guidance

counselor helped me a lotthroughout my four years of highschool, with everything from mycourse schedule to general con-cerns that I had. My former ele-mentary school teacher is ateacher of the deaf. She helpedme to develop my strong languageskills and encouraged me to takeLatin in middle school. This gaveme confidence to take honors andAP English in high school, as wellas four years of French and toexcel in both languages. We'vebeen in touch ever since I left ele-mentary school, and we still seeeach other every chance we get,”Castillo said. Castillo is excited for the new

The calendar is about to turn thepage to August, and here weare, talking about November al-

ready. We’re talking about Tuesday,Nov. 3, to be precise. That’s the date forthe General Election this year.Yes, temperatures may still soar to

the 90s outside right now, instead ofbeing in the 60s, 50s or maybe even40s – hopefully not – as they’re likely tobe in November. Still, the time both weas voters and the candidates them-selves spend now determine what ourlives look like for the near future. This fall, there is no “big name” seat

up for election. Gov. Christie’s seat isnot up for election, though he is doingsome campaigning himself, as we allknow. There are no Senate or House of

Representatives seats up for election inour state, either. But still, 2015 couldprove to be an important year locally. That’s because, as is the case in odd-numbered years, all 80 seats in theGeneral Assembly are up for election. These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local levelthan an election for president of theUnited States. These are the peoplewho represent your interests.Throughout New Jersey, municipal

governing bodies and boards of educa-tion will also be holding elections tochoose new members to represent thetown. Mayors, councilmembers andschool board members often have agreater impact on your daily life thanyour governor and president. The governor and president may be

the “sexier” post to vote for, but yourtrash pickup, your property taxes andyour kids’ school curriculum havemore of an impact on your day-to-daylife, and those local post holders arethe ones who control those areas themost. So just because you won’t be voting

for the next governor or the next presi-dent doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be intune with this November’s electionsand this November’s issues. We at The Sun will be providing you

as much election coverage as we canthis fall, especially when there is a con-tested election at the municipal level. If your town has a contested munici-

pal election, expect a full, multi-weekMeet the Candidates series where we’llprovide you detailed informationabout the election itself, as well as pro-files of the candidates and theirstances on the issues. If you have any questions you’d like

us to ask the candidates, feel free toemail us at the address to the right. So while you may still be making

trips to the beach and thinking aboutback to school or the start of footballinstead of heading to the polls, don’tfall behind on the issues. What hap-pens behind those curtains in Novem-ber could have a profound impact onwhat happens in front of them for theforeseeable future.

in our opinion

Get ready to voteThis year’s election is very important for New Jersey residents

chines that should be avoided ona full stomach. This year, 92.5 XTU added to

the fun by stationing a tent at theentrance and filling the air witheverybody’s favorite countrytunes. Of course the music playedsecond fiddle to the laughs andshouts from the action-packedrides the children could not getenough of.Carole Pulaski and Barbara

Dunn talked about how it is one ofthe limited chances people get toconverse with old friends theydon’t get to see often.“It’s a great opportunity to see

people that you haven’t seen inawhile. I only see some of thesepeople once a year and it’s nice tocatch up,” Pulaski said. “It’s alsonice because it’s in the middle ofthe summer.”Even with temperatures heat-

ing up well into the 90s, folks werenot deterred from coming out andsupporting the Church of theHoly Eucharist’s largest fundrais-er. Edward Mooney is a longtimeSouthampton resident whomoved here from Philadelphiaand has been coming to the festi-val for 14 years now.“The church needs money, and

this is a great way to meet peopleand thank their volunteers,”Mooney said. “It’s also an oppor-tunity for the church to meetother parishes.”Any way you slice it, the festi-

val is arguably the most anticipat-ed event of the year for a typicallyslow area known for its naturaltranquility.“It’s good, controlled fun,” Zoe

Kane of Tabernacle said. “It real-ly gives people the opportunity tocome out and enjoy the Pine Bar-rens.”

Hundreds of volunteers work-ing with the church were happyto dedicate their time, whether itwas selling raffle tickets or super-vising the carnival games. All dressed in their blue t-

shirts, they enhanced eachguest’s experience by greetingeveryone like they were the firstperson to walk through the en-

trance.Linda Waters was in charge of

the carnival game side of the ac-tion that had an assortment offun options.“We keep it safe, clean and the

best in the area,” Waters said. “Ofcourse, other than the BurlingtonCounty Farm Fair, it is the onlyone in the area!”
