Together In Mission – Thank You

Thank you to all who have participated in this year’s Together In Mission appeal. This year our parish and school will benefit from the generous support received from La Purisima parishioners and those of other Archdiocesan parishes. This year the Together In Mission office has awarded La Purisima Church $25,000 and our parish school will receive $50,000. Without your contribution to the Together In Mission appeal it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to keep many vital ministries available to our commu-nity. This year’s parish goal is $41,200 and the amount received from La Purisima parishioners thus far is $34,880. Let me first thank those who have already contributed to our parish goal and ask those who have not contribute to please prayerful consider making a gift to help us reach our goal.

Teach kids when to say something It is important to help children understand the difference between telling on others and sharing information that could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tell mom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if someone asks them to keep a bad secret. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas sponsor a yearly national educational contest for students grades 4 thru 8. The first place entries in each category are sent to the State Level and if they win there they are submitted to National Level. Save the Date for Religious Education Retreat

Religious Education will host a bilingual retreat for catechist of all levels. This retreat will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 8:30 – 11:00 am. We will begin with Mass and continue with interact talks and refreshments. Our retreat director will be Mr. Victor Hernandez. CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is some-thing of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce some-thing through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ follow-ers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively chal-lenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. Juntos en Misión – Gracias

Gracias a todos los que han participado este año con sus contri-buciones juntos en misión. Este año, nuestra parroquia y la es-cuela se beneficiarán del generoso apoyo recibido por los feli-greses de la Purisima y aquellos de otras parroquias Arquidio-cesanas. Este año la oficina juntos en misión de la Iglesia La Purísima ha otorgado $25.000 nuestra escuela parroquial recibi-rá 50.000 dólares. Sin su contribución al llamamiento juntos en misión sería muy difícil, si no imposible, mantener muchos ministerios vitales disponibles en nuestra comunidad. Este año la meta de la parroquia es de 41.200 dólares y la cantidad reci-bida de los feligreses de la Purísima hasta la fecha es de $34,880. En primer lugar, permítanme dar las gracias a quienes han contribuido a nuestra parroquia y pedir a aquellos que no han contribuido por favor considere hacer una donación para ayudarnos a alcanzar nuestro objetivo.

RECONOCIMIENTO DEL COMITÉ DE EDUCACIÓN

Las hijas católicas de las Américas patrocina un concurso educativo na-cional anual para estudiantes de los grados 4 a 8. El primer lugar en cada categoría son enviados a nivel estatal y si ganan allí son presentados a nivel nacional. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Mientras que la población de estudiantes que no son hispa-nos va bajando en Estados Unidos de América, el número de es-tudiantes hispanos va creciendo en las escuelas primarias y se-cundarias. Esta es buena noticia para los latinos. La mala noticia es que el porcentaje de estudiantes latinos que abandonan la es-cuela y nunca terminan su educación sigue creciendo. De la mis-ma manera, el número de latinos que van a la universidad conti-núa muy bajo y muchos de los que asisten nunca terminan por falta de recursos, documentos legales o apoyo familiar. La familia constituye uno de nuestros valores centrales como hispanos. Esta no debe ser una barrera sino un apoyo para que se eduquen nuestros hijos e hijas. Recuerdo bien que a la edad de 6 años mi papá me hacía pasar y repasar el abecedario. Durante la primaria, él y mi mamá me corregían la tarea, y cuando no quería ir a la escuela, me hacían ver lo difícil que es la vida cuando no se tiene estudios.
