Exctng Abarth 595 deies boredoFIATS evergreen 500 has beenturned into a fire-breathing hothatch before by legendary firmAbarth, but the latest version isnow a permanent addition to therange.

Available in semi-sensibleTurismo or 100 per cent barmyCompetizione guise tested here,the Abarth 595 is not for the faintof heart.

Theres a turbocharged 1.4-litrepetrol unit up front that offersa healthy 158bhp but more sig-nificantly 170lb.ft of torque. Theexterior wears a seriously toughbodykitandgorgeousalloywheeloptions, while theres stiffer sus-pension and uprated brakes too.

Theressome interesting touchesinside too, such as the attractivemetal-topped gear lever.

Its hard not to love the Abarth595s looks. Froma rationalpointof view it has the proportions ofa roller-skate,witha shortwheel-base, big wheels and minimalride height, but it just makes youwant to get in and drive it, but,dont forget that the Abarth isstill a city car. Up front there is arespectable amount of space foradults but the driving position isbetter suited to those under sixfeetin height.This particular 595had the optional leather bucketseats, which are supportive andlook superb. In fact its very easyto get carried away with the op-tions list.

Drive the 595 in the manner itdeserves and youll revel in thegloriously torquey engine, the

hilariously raucous exhaust note

andthewayinwhichitdives intobends withlimitless enthusiasm.

The great handling comes fromthe stiff suspension, but its aworthwhile trade-off.
