201Meet the city car with characterTHE original Peugeot 108 was a jointproject with sister company Citroenand also Toyota, creating three brand-new city cars. Now in 2014 its time forthe second generation version.

The basic underpinnings remain thesame although the 108 is now a littlelonger overall, while under the bonnetthereis nowtheoption of a more power-ful 1.2-litre engine alongside the previ-ous 1.0-litre.

On the inside theres a brand-newdashboard with smarter materials plusa touchscreen system on all bar the en-try-level model.

Peugeot has done a good job of givingthe little 108 some character. It managesto wear the new family grille with easeand with standard 15-inch alloy wheelsand tinted windows on Allure modelsit manages to look smarter than youmight expect of a humble city car.

It feels more classy inside too, andalthough theres the odd flash of bodycolour it all hangs together well.The 108islessthan3.5 metreslongbutstill man-ages to offer respectable space inside.Up front its nice and airy, with comfort-able front seats and plenty of space. Inthe rear its a bit tighter but kids will be

happy. The bootnow offers196 litres too,andaslongas you pack sensiblyyoucanfit a decent weeks shopping in there.

The view out from the drivers seatis excellent thanks to the big windowsand the dashboard layout is clear andattractive. The 1.2-litre three-cylinderfires up with an enthusiastic thrum,and while its not the quietest engine atlow speed it is smooth and the sound ispleasant enough.The steering is faithfuland accurate while remaining light at

low speeds and the ride is good for sucha small car.An Allure with the 1.2-litreengine checks in at 10,995 and for thatyou get a good specification; featureslike a reversing camera are still quiteunusual for a car in this class, andtheres leather on the steering wheeland air-conditioning too.

The 7-inch touchscreen uses phonemirroring so you can use your smart-phones connectivity although you doneed to download some new apps to getfeatures like sat-nav.
