Set your heart soaring with this adorable stuffed bird! Stitch the pieces in-the-hoop, then assemble andstuff. Our step-by-step instructions below will show you how!

Project Needs & Notes:

- 1/4 yard of teal quilter's cotton (for body)- 1/4 yard of red patterned quilter's cotton (for tummy)- 1/4 yard of teal patterned quilter's cotton (for wings and tail)- Small piece of yellow patterned quilter's cotton (for beak)- Cotton batting- Polyester fiberfill- Tear-away stabilizer- Temporary spray adhesive (such as Gunold's KK100)- Needle for hand sewing- Sewing machine- 2 buttons (1/2" - 3/4")

The design featured in this tutorial is:X13720, Bird Stuffie in 3D (In-the-Hoop)

Finished Size: 4" wide, 3 1/2" tall (5 1/2" tall with tail), and 3 1/2" deep

Special Notes:To make a completed stuffed bird, embroider two wings (embroidery file "f"), and just one of every otherpiece.

The stuffed bird's body is assembled on a sewing machine, and then the other pieces are hand sew ontothe body. If preferred, the hand sewn portions may also be glued on.

For best results, place batting on both the front and back dieline pieces for the wings and tail. This willmake the pieces sturdier and give them a cute, quilted effect.

sixteen files. Seven are the fullembroidery files. The other nineare dieline files marked with theletters DL. Dielines are used tocut the fabric to the right shapeand size.

Open the dieline files withembroidery software and printthem. If you do not haveembroidery software, Wilcom'sTrueSizer is a free program touse.

Print two copies of the front andback dieline files for the wings(piece "f"). This will allow you tohave enough dielines to maketwo wings as the one file willneed to be embroidered twice.

Cut around the paper dieline forthe top of the bird (piece "a"), andspray the back of it withtemporary adhesive. Thensmooth it onto the teal fabric.

Cut out the shape, and fold backa corner of the paper dieline tomake it easy to remove later.

Repeat the previous steps tomake the fabric dielines forpieces labeled "b," "c," "d," and"e."

"a," "b," and "c" should all be outof the teal fabric, "d" uses the redfabric, and "e" uses the yellow. For best results, label the pieceswith a pen to keep them fromgetting mixed up.

To make the fabric dielines forthe wings and tail (pieces "f" and"g"), spray and place the paperdieline onto the fabric as you didbefore.

Then, cut a piece of battingslightly bigger than the fabric, spray it with temporary adhesive, and smooth it onto the back ofthe fabric. The wings and tailpieces also have a front and aback. Make sure to put batting onevery piece.

Label, and cut out each of thefabric dielines with batting. Makesure to cut out two wing frontsand two wing backs, so that twowings (file "f") can be made.

Now that the fabric pieces are cutto the proper shape and size, it'stime to embroider the design.

Hoop a piece of tear-awaystabilizer. Madeira E-Zee Tear1.5 oz. or Floriani TearawayMedium are good choices. Thosebrands are more fibrous, lesspaper-like, and will tear morecleanly.

Attach the hoop to the machineand load the full embroiderydesign (not the dieline files) forthe top of the bird (file "a").

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharpsewing needle, rather than anembroidery needle. A sharpsewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroideryneedle, so that will make smallerperforations in the stabilizer.

Embroider the design. The firstthing to embroider will be adieline or outline. This marks thearea on the stabilizer for thefabric piece.

Remove the hoop from themachine, but do not unhoop thestabilizer.

Spray the back side of the fabricpiece with a small amount oftemporary adhesive. Place thefabric right inside the sewnoutline.

Attach the hoop back onto themachine and continueembroidering. A tackdown andborder will sew next. Then thedetails will sew.

Once the embroidery is finished, unhoop the stabilizer and gentlytear it away from the edges.

Make sure to leave the tear-awaystabilizer on the back of the fabricpiece as this will add a little bit ofstructure to the finished piece.

Then repeat to embroider thesides of the bird (pieces "b" and"c"), the tummy (piece "d"), andthe beak (piece "e").

Follow the color change sheetscarefully and add the fabricdieline pieces before sewingeach tackdown. Tear away theexcess stabilizer once they arefinished embroidering.

Next, it's time to embroider thefirst wing (file "f"). Load the fileand start embroidering. Watchthe color change sheet and addthe front dieline piece beforesewing the step labeled "frontpiece tackdown."

Then, stop the machine againbefore sewing the "back piecetackdown."

Remove the hoop from themachine, but do not unhoop thestabilizer.

Flip the hoop over, spray theback fabric piece with temporaryadhesive, and place it inside ofthe embroidered shape.

Since both sides of the wings andtail will be seen, wind a bobbinwith the same thread used in theneedle.

Place the hoop back on themachine, and continueembroidering. A tack down andfinal border will sew along with afew inner details.

Once finished embroidering, tearthe excess stabilizer away, andrepeat to make another wing (file"f"), and the tail (file "g").

Now that all of the pieces areembroidered, it is time to startassembling the bird.

Take the top of the bird (piece"a"), and the right side of the bird(piece "b"), and match up thepointed end of the top to thecurved point by the eye on theside piece (marked in blue).

These pieces are going to besewn together from the points, along one side, and to the backcorner of the top piece marked inred.

Match up the points and edgeswith the right sides together, andpin them in place all along oneside of the top piece.

The finishing edge detail thatembroidered on all the bodypieces will be the seamallowance.

On a sewing machine, carefullystitch right along the stitchedborder. For best results, sew rightalong it on the inside of thestitching, so that none of thestitching will be seen in theseams of the finished bird.

Then repeat to line up, pin, andsew the other side of the bird(piece "c") onto the oppositeedge of the top piece.

Next, take the belly piece (piece"d"), and locate the triangle dart.

Fold the fabric piece in 1/2 alongthe dart with right sides together.Match up the two stitched sidesof the triangle, and pin in place.

Sew right along the stitched sideof the triangle to create the dart.

Now, take the belly and theconnected top and sides of thebird, and start to match up thebottom corners of the belly pieceto the outer points of the sidesalong the curved edges.

Match up the corners and thecurved edges, and pin the twopieces with right sides together.

It is easiest to sew if top of thebird is curved like a bowl, andbelly is inside of it.

Sew along the seam allowance, and make sure to leave about 3"open in the back for turning andstuffing.

Turn the bird right side out, andstuff it firmly with polyesterfiberfill.

For best results, continue to stuffthe base of the bird's body withfilling as you sew the openingclosed.

Simply sew a little and then addstuffing, and then repeat until theopening is closed and all thebottom corners of the bird arefirmly stuffed. This will help thebird sit very well.

Next, take the embroidered beakpiece (piece "e"), and gentlybend it in half with wrong sidestogether. Do not crease the fold.

Match up the two short straightsides, and hand sew themtogether along the straight edges.

Position the beak on the front ofthe bird's face with the straightseam facing down.

Carefully, begin to hand sew thebeak in place by placing littlehand stitches along the edges.

Leave a small hole, and addsome stuffing inside the beak(between the body and the beak).

Then finish sewing the beak on,and close the hole.

Next take one of the wings (piece"f"), and sew a button onto theright side above the line detail.

After the button is sewn on,position the wing on the body sothat it is about 1" away from theeye, and the bottom edge of thewing is resting along the seam ofthe belly.

Hand sew the wing to the bodyby first sewing right behind wherethe button is sewn.

Then hand stitch the edge of thewing for about 1/4"-1/2" to tack itin place.

This will prevent the wing fromspinning on the side of the bird.

Repeat to add the button onto thesecond wing, and sew it onto theopposite side.

Finally take the embroidered tail(piece "g"), and fit it into thegroove on the back of the bird.Make sure the right side of thetail is against the body.

Hand sew the tail to the body bystitching along the bottom edgeof the tail, and then continue bystitching about 1 1/4" up eachside.
