ONLINE TRAINING: PICTURE SEARCHSEARCHING THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE

ERC LIBRARY SERVICES

Login to the iPAC using your Last Name as the Client Code and the 4-digit school code as your Password. Click on Login. Please contact ERC staff if you have difficulties logging in. erc@hcdsb.org

From the My Profile Page, look for the Terms at the top of the screen to Searching the catalogue. Click on Picture Search to perform a choice of preset searches.

This is what the search screen looks like.

You will see this screen. Look for the drop down menu of pre-set searches.

Let’s perform a search for New Teachers. Click on the drop down menu for New teachers. You will see 5 headings for topics related to NTIP. Let’s choose Classroom Management.

There are Picture Groups for most Subjects, as well as many current Educational Priorities. Within each subject, you will often find divisional subheadings.

Let’s look for science resources. Choose Science from the drop down menu. Now you will see the choices within that heading. Let’s choose Primary Science by clicking on the blue Primary Science heading.

A list of all of the Science material at a Primary Level housed at the ERC will be displayed.

Note: more than one Level can be applied to a resource. So, the first item listed will also appear on a search for Junior resources.

You can sort the table by any of the headings by simply clicking on it.

Let’s sort this search by Call Number.

Now, the table is sorted by call number.

The first items listed are those starting with a number (this is the Dewey Decimal Number). These are books.

If you scroll down, you will see Call Numbers that start with a letter. These letters refer to the type of material. For example, AC = audio cassette, BB = Big Book, ST = Science and Technology.

The next slide shows the meaning of each call number and its corresponding borrowing period.
