Supervisor Cohen and Supervisor Kim Jointly Sign a Letter 

to the United States Postal Service Urging Them Not to

Close Post Offices in Districts 6 and 10

Supervisor Cohen and Supervisor Kim (D6, including South of Market, Tenderloin and Mission Bay area) jointly signed a letter to Sylvia Siu, Discontinuance Coordinator of United StatesPostal Services (USPS), urgin USPS to retain the four postoffices identified for potential closure. All of the post officesproposed for closure are located in low income neighborhoods,

with high concentrations of families, immigrants and seniors.These are also areas that are expected to experience significantgrowth in the coming years.

10 apparel manufacturer to launch FashionSF, a new businessdevelopment initiative that supports local apparel manufactures

in San Francisco and attracts new apparel manufacturers to the

City and District 10 in particular.

Merchant Walk on San Bruno Avenue with Mayor Lee

On November 10 Supervisor Cohen joined Mayor Lee for a

merchant walk on San Bruno Ave. in the Portola. Along with

First Lady Anita Lee, the Mayor and Supervisor Cohen spoke

with store owners and residents alike about the importance of 

continuing to grow jobs in the neighborhood and invest inneighborhood revitalization.

News From City Hall

SF Redevelopment Agency 3rd Quarter ConstructionWorkforce ResultsThe 3rd quarter construction local hire results have been

released by the Redevelopment Agency. We continued to havestrong results. Two of our project areas have exceeded the 50%goal. The Redevelopment Agency achieved a 44.9% local hirerate, including 62.1% in Bayview and 50.6% in SOMA. Theresult was achieved by placing San Francisco residents in 586  jobs, generating over $7.66 million in gross wages. In addition,the City`s mandatory local hire policy requires that 20% of workby trade is performed by San Francisco residents. 20 tradesexceeded the 20% goal, 18 of which achieved 30% or more.

Mirant Settlement

The Supplemental Appropriation Ordinance introduced inSeptember has finally passed. This ordinance will facilitate theallocation of the $1 million in settlement funds that the Cityreceived from the closure of the Mirant Power Plant. They will beused to fund a variety of programs in the district focused onimproving air quality, increasing physical activity, the preventionand treatment of asthma and supporting community gardenprojects. A special thanks to the members of the Power Planand Asthma Task Forces who worked diligently to makerecommendations on the use of these funds.

Mayor Lee Signs Pregnancy Information Disclosure andProtection Ordinance After a hard fought battle, Supervisor Cohen’s Crisis PregnancyCenter legislation was signed by the Mayor. We are grateful toour community partners and City Attorney Dennis Herrera for helping to make this legislation a success.

Health Care Security Ordinance UpdateEarlier this month, Mayor Lee vetoed Supervisor Campos'amendments to the Health Care Security Ordinance, whichwould have made funds contributed to Health CareReimbursement Accounts irrevocable, a piece of legislation thatSupervisor Cohen strongly supported. In light of this veto andafter months of conversation and meetings with numerousinterested stakeholders including representatives from healthaccess groups, small businesses, labor and workers, Supervisor Cohen introduced a series of amendments to the Health CareSecurity Ordinance that strengthen the consumer protectionelements of the legislation. They require that employers carry

over any balances in Health Care Reimbursement Accountsfrom this year to next year and extend the time period for theaccumulation of funds in these accounts to two years.

Supervisor Cohen joins the "Don't Take the Bait” Campaign

On November 14 Supervisor Cohen and representatives of theDepartment of the Environment held a press conference to callattention to the continued use and sale of toxic mouse and ratbait products that deemed unsafe by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency. The Department of the Environment will beleading a city-wide campaign to educate businesses andconsumers about the potential effects of these products onchildren, animals and the environment. Additionally, Supervisor Cohen will introduce a resolution urging all of San Franciscobusinesses and consumers to not "take the bait" and stop sellingand buying these dangerous products. A special thanks to the

businesses who have already voluntarily agreed to stop sellingthese products!

Welcome Tiffany Bohee, Acting Executive Director of theSan Francisco Redevelopment AgencyMs. Bohee brings years of experience in negotiating andimplementing complex projects across the City, includingMission Bay and the Hunters Point Shipyard Phase 2-Candlestick Point Project. She is thoughtful and understandsthat one of the most important components of revitalizing our neighborhoods is involving the public and ensuring thatresidents benefit from new development. Supervisor Cohensaid, “  As the District Supervisor representing the largestRedevelopment Project Areas, I commend the Redevelopment  Agency Commission for their selection of Ms. Bohee and lookforward to working with her and her staff to advance therevitalization of the southeast sector.”
