President’s July Message

Hello everyone,

It’s so nice to see the steady stream of new members joining us each month. Please take a moment to say hi and make them feel welcome. Also let your friends know that we are on the move and to come join the fun. With your help and suggestions, we hope to continue to maintain the high quality of our programs at our monthly dinners. It is such a pleasure to step away from life’s fast pace and relax with all of you every month.

We’re working on finding people to take pictures at our dinners so we can have them for our website and Facebook for those of you who want to share them with your friends and family. I’m sure it would be fun for the ones we care about to see what their parents and/or grandparents are doing. If you snap a picture at one of our dinners with your phone, you can easily send it to our Newsletter Editor, Tory Courtney ([email protected]) so we can post it.

It was brought up at a recent Board meeting that someone wanted a copy of our roster in order to contact one of our members as a follow-up to their conversation. As a courtesy to all of you, we do not and never will give out the personal information that you have given to us in confidence. Anyone needing information to contact another member, please exchange your information at the dinner meetings. I’m sure you can all appreciate having your personal information kept private in today’s information age.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our next dinner.

Sincerely,

Keith

MONDAY, JULY 9TH, DINNER AND ENTERTAINMENTAT THE SODA CENTER, SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE

SOCIAL HOUR AT 5:00 DINNER AT 6:00 PROGRAM AT 7:00 PM The Sodexo organization will prepare the following for your buffet dinner:

Reservations must be honored and paid for whether you attend or not!

Program

It is a thrill to announce that Paraguayan-born violinist, harpist, artist, and producer, Carlos Reyes and his Electric Symphony, will be our program on Monday, July 9th! He will dazzle you with an evening of solo and ensemble music with his Electric Symphony, charismatic personality, and extensive repertoire including Latin American ballads, blues, jazz, and dance numbers.

Carlos learned to play the violin at age 3½ and won awards performing on the complicated 36-string Paraguayan harp at age 10. Since then, he has added the guitar, bass, mandolin, keyboard, and numerous electronic devices to his repertoire.

After relocating to the Bay Area during his early teens, Carlos played harp with the Oakland Symphony and violin with the Oakland Youth Symphony. In addition, he provided background music for Sesame Street and Villa Allegro. He has performed with artists such as Roy Rogers, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Wynona Judd, Clint Black, Steve Miller, and Willie Nelson.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS Norma Claassen

We are at the half-year mark and our membership is slowly shrinking due to folks moving, passing and health issues. Don’t forget that if you refer a new member to Lamorinda Movers, you have a chance to win a year of ‘free” meals.  Just have the new applicant add your name to the “referred by” line on the application. The drawing is held at the end of year at our Holiday Luncheon.

Please remember the guest fee to attend the monthly dinner meetings is now $30. More reason to have your guest join the Moraga Movers.

Also, just a reminder that if your guest does not appear for the meal and you did not cancel, you will be billed for his or her meal.  (We have to give an accurate count to the caterer and have to pay for the meals that are not consumed.)

THEATRE NEWS

Town Hall Theatre presents Kate Hamill’s rollicking new adaptation of SENSE & SENSIBILITY, based on the classic novel by Jane Austen.  Through June 23, 2018Town Hall Theatre Company 3535 School Street Lafayette, CA. Tickets: Box Office at (925) 283-1557 or www.TownHallTheatre.com. Discounts available for Seniors and Youth       Called "perhaps the greatest stage adaptation of this novel in history" and "an unconditional delight" by the critics, Hamill's adaptation is full of humor and inventive theatricality, while staying remarkably faithful to the beloved classic. The play follows the adventures (and misadventures) of the Dashwood sisters - sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne - in gossipy late 18th Century Regency England.

Set in India, the central characters in The God of Small Things are  twins, Rahel and Estha, cared for by a cast of compelling characters:  their beautiful mother Ammu, grandmother Mammachi, uncle Chacko, and great-aunt Baby Kochamma.  Time shifts between 1969 and 1993, when Rahel comes home to visit the  brother she hasn't seen in over twenty years.  On that fateful day Chacko's ex-wife and daughter also return, throwing the household into disarray.  Tragedy strikes in the form of an accident (that may not have been accidental) and a terrifying murder.

Roy's debut novel won the Booker Prize for Literature in 1997"The quality of Ms. Roy's narration is so extraordinary -- at once so morally strenuous and so imaginatively supple -- that the reader remains enthralled all the way through." -- New York Times Book Review

On July 19, attendees will discuss Sue Monk Kidd's The Invention of Wings
