Dear Sunrisers, “See! I am making all things new!” What a won-derful statement. If only it was true. Can it be true in 2015? Can it be true in your life? If these were the words of a newly elected president or senator we would be excited. If these were the words of a leader we respected they would hold power. What if I told you they were from God? Journey with me to the last book of the Bible, Revelation. The first 8 verses of chapter 21 give us these words and oth-ers that bring hope…lasting hope. What would you like to become new this year? 2015 is ripe with untapped potential. It may be the best year of our lives. It may be filled with bless-ings and it may be filled with heartache and it will probably have a mixture of both. It will be a new year. We have never lived 2015 before. Whether it turns out differently than previous years…whether it is “new” for us or just another repeat of the years that have come before…well…that’s up to you and me. God’s desire is clear. God desires that all things be made new…including you and me! God is in the business of making all things new. There are so many passages that speak to this truth. Another of my favorites is 2 Corinthians 5:17 where we are told we ARE new creations if we are in relationship with Jesus Christ. Then there is Nicodemus who struggles to understand Jesus when he tells him to be born anew from above (see John 3). Even as far back as the Prophet Isaiah, God declares a new thing is beginning and that we should already per-ceive it (Isaiah 43:19). The question it seems is not if God will make any-thing new this year, but rather, will we allow our-selves to be made new in Christ’s image this year. Will you? I know the leaders of Sunrise Church have been praying for this very moment. We have discerned God’s voice and are developing and im-plementing many programs, some brand new (continued on page 2)

and never tried before and others time honored and honed throughout years of ministry, all designed to help you find a new beginning to Jesus. Maybe you’ll join a disciple class this year. Maybe you’ll join a divorce recovery group this year. Maybe you’ll lead a sma ll group or host a Bible study or attend a study on Revelation. It is our job to present you with options and avenues to grow deeper in your rela-tionship with Jesus Christ who is the Lord of Life. With Jesus, we become new just like the burning bush of Exodus grew new life even though it was on fire as God spoke to Moses (see Exodus chapter 3). God is life and light and love. God changes us from the inside out. 2015 is fresh territory for God to do what is familiar to God yet brand new to us: create life from death, hope from despair, possibility from impossibility. Are you interested? Would you like 2015 to be different from all the other years you’ve lived? Would you like to be new? God is eager for your reply…
Happy New Year! Tom Newman, pastor

Reflecting on Live Nativity and Bethlehem Marketplace, December 19 & 20, 2014
Please help Sunrise UMC Staff and volunteer leaders evaluate our first-ever Live Nativity and Bethlehem Mar-ketplace. Your feedback will help us make good decisions about our ministry together. Thanks!
*** Purpose: Our stated purpose for this event was to help people experience Jesus’ birth in a new way, through the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes reminiscent of the first Christmas. We hoped to reach not only members of Sunrise UMC, but also attract people from the community at large. Do you think we accomplished our purpose? Please explain… Here is a list of the various facets of our event. Please reflect on each one, and jot down two things:
What was most effective? What might we do differently if we do this again?
+Publicity and signage, bulletin inserts, bulletin boards, info sheet/handout, other… +Setup of church inside and outside… +Parking… +“Marketplace” and Ten Thousand Villages crafts… +International foods… +Liturgical Dancers… +Holy Family Manger Scene, costumed characters… +Live Animals…

I recently shared coffee with one of our youth, and we were talking about skiing. I recalled how nice it was when our family took a trip out west to the big mountains of Colorado. The trails were wide and long, and we seemed to float on top of the fresh snow. In college, skiing at Massanutten in Virginia, I remembered how cautiously we moved along the ice, not sure which direction our ski tips might turn!
I remember when my brothers' and I first learned to ski. My younger brother, Kyle, was fearless. At the age of 4, he turned his skiis parallel with the slope and went straight down to the bottom! Faster he flew, without one thought of the ground beneath him.
Sometimes I think Jesus just gets it right. Like when he reorients the expectations of those in search of the 'correct' answers on how to be great and enter the kingdom of Heaven. It is instead those who be-come like children who get the firmest grasp of faith. Focusing on the wonder all around, with little pause or hesitation, they absorb the love of God like a sponge. The older I get, the harder it is to let go of requiring certainty, constantly assessing my foundations, and seeking what is right instead of striv-ing after Jesus.
We can't always see what dangers may be lurking, what disappointments may ensue even despite our best efforts. There is so much we can learn from the faith of our children. And yet, how great the need is to, borrowing a phrase I love, "show them the ropes!" It is we, as youth and adults, who teach through our actions and presence, how to serve God in the world. In Making Your Children's Ministry the Best Hour of Every Kid's Week, Sue Miller includes an interesting note about the pertinence of teach-ing our children at a young age: "Between birth and age fourteen, [George Barna] found there is a 32 percent chance an individual will accept Jesus. After than point, the number drops quickly, to about 6 percent during the rest of a person's life." We have no time to lose! Our kids need us as much as we need them!
In this new year, how might you come to experience faith like a child by serving the youngest disciples among us? Each week our children embark on a journey - from the Children's Moment, Children's Church, Sunday School, to afternoon Guitar Lessons + Kid's Praise Ensemble, and Children's Bible Club. Kids walk with Jesus all day on Sunday. But this is only possible with the devotion and tireless efforts of our parent and adult volunteers. At what point on this journey might they encounter the love of Jesus through you?

OPPORTUNITIES
We will celebrate Human Relations Day on January
18 with a special offering. Human Relations Day calls the church to
recognize the right of all God’s children to realize their potential. The
purpose of the day is to further the development of better human
relations. This offering supports Community Developers self improve-
ment programs, United Methodist Voluntary Services and Youth Of-
fender Rehabilitation projects. As a result, lives have been turned
around, communities revitalized and the gospel proclaimed. Your
gift to this special offering makes a world of difference!

The Walk to Jerusalem Starting at Sunrise January 3rd
!
What is the Walk to Jerusalem?
It is a church wide walking program designed to increase the physical and
spiritual health of Sunrise members.
The Walk to Jerusalem will begin January 3rd
with the goal of accumulating
enough church wide miles to reach Jerusalem by Easter.
This “imaginary” trip to Jerusalem is accomplished by individuals within the
church logging their own walking miles each week by keeping track of their
physical and spiritual activity.
“Miles” can be accumulated in several ways: walking, biking, swimming or any
other activities that are measured in miles.
Any type of aerobic exercise for 20 minutes equals one mile: house cleaning,
yard work, dancing, jazzercise, and sports
Those with health issues can participate too. Physical therapy exercises can
count toward miles.
5 miles per week will be given to those who do the daily devotion and prayers for
the entire week.
For Weekly Devotionals and Scriptures online go to mysunrise.org and
click on resources. Hard copies are available in the Narthex.
Start this New Year off right with a resolution to become more physically and
spiritually fit!
