Cremona High School Exam Schedule

Leadership:

Welcome 2017! We hope that everyone had a relaxing Christmas break with family and got to enjoy skating, skiing and sledding in the beautiful weather. The leadership elves were busy, busy, busy in December with many Christmas and kindness themed activities. We thank all the staff and students for embracing the Christmas spirit!

Thanks to all that brought in food for the food drive, we collected 900 food items! Congratulations to Mrs. Smith’s grade 2s, grade 5s and grade 12s for earning the most points; they enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies on the last day before Christmas break. The door decorating was as usual, an intense competition! It was very difficult to choose but the winners were grade 10 for high school, grade 7 for middle school and kindergarten for elementary. The Secret Candy Canes campaign was again a success and we donated $200 to Santa’s Anonymous - thanks for all who supported this worthy cause.

Friday January 20, will be Pajama Day, in honor of the last day before exams for high school. We will also be selling milk and cookies for $1 each over the lunch hour.

Coach’s Corner:

Basketball season is well underway and we have already had some success with many of our teams. Unfortunately we did not have the numbers to put together a senior girls basketball team but we are happy to say that some of our high school girls were able to join a combined team with Crossfield so that they could have the opportunity to play this season. Best of luck to all of our players, have a great holiday break and a wonderful New Year and we look forward to picking up again in January.

From the Principal’s Desk

2017 is here! With still a week of holidays before we return to school, we wish you all a fun filled family time. We do hope you all have a

fabulous break and are ready hit the ground running so to speak when we return on January 9th. With our return come final exams for all

high school students. Students are provided many opportunities for extra help leading up to exams and we ask you as parents to help us

encourage your students to access these.

Once again the snow has come and with that come the enjoyment of playing outside, building snowmen, and forts and sliding down hills.

We remind parents to assist your children in dressing for the weather. This also includes dressing for their ride to school on the school

bus. Our bus drivers take every precaution while transporting students, but unforeseen circumstances can arise so all students must be

appropriately clothed while riding on the bus. We also remind you to ensure that your children have an indoor pair of shoes at the

school. We strive to keep all outdoor footwear confined to the boot room in order to keep our floors dry. Thank you for your assistance

on these matters.

Cremona School staff and students would like to thank the Cremona Ag. Society for the use of the arena and the Cremona Rec. board for

the use of the curling rink. It is fabulous to provide our students with sportsmanship skills and the opportunity to be part of activities they

can use for years to come.

We would like to thank you all for supporting us with our fundraising. This fundraising goes towards helping with bussing costs to a varie-

ty of activities as well cutting down the costs for field trips. They also go towards a variety of specialists we bring into our school such as

artists, authors, athletics, music, drama and other speakers. Our extras for our students would be limited without your continued support.

We would like to congratulate the winners of our fundraising incentives: Katelyn & Owen Davidson, Keeley Belcourt, Cody Mast and Sheri-

dan Whitlow.

Looking back at 2016 brings many memories to mind. One of our new adventures is our alliance with the Cochrane High football team.

Two of our high school boys have been a part of that team this year and assisted them in becoming provincial champions in November.

We would like to congratulate Donovan Allen and Wyatt Anderson on their successful first season with the football team. We look for-

ward to future games.

We thank you all who came out to our Band concert and our Elementary Christmas concert. The student performed beautifully. We

would like to thank Mrs. Ward for all of her work on the Christmas concert as well as the rest of the staff who put in extra time with their

class preparing. We would like to also thank the students for all of their hard work.

The annual ski trips to the mountains will be happening soon. The High School (grade 8 – 12) trip to Sunshine Ski Hill has been booked

for January 27th. We will be taking a school bus to the hill and do require a truck or two to help transport equipment to and from the hill

as it is not permitted on the bus. If you would like to join us on the ski trip you are welcome to do so. A letter will be coming home with

the students and those interested are asked to come to the office for a permission and fee form. We will also send out an email with the

information so please check your email for the notification. The deadline for this registering for this trip is Friday January 13th. The Mid-

dle school (grades 4-7) trip to Nakiska Ski Hill will be Thursday, February 9th. A letter with more information will be going home with the

students. There will also be an email sent out with the information so please check your email for the notification. A reminder though

that all students on the school ski trips must take a lesson. We look forward to a fun day on the hill and providing our students with anoth-

er opportunity to learn or practice a new skill. The deadline for this registering for this trip is Tuesday January 24th.

We have our Winter Travel course going out to Lake Louise from January 31 - February 3. Our 12 students and 2 staff are very excited to

partake in the 3 credit course.

There are so many exciting events happening in the new year. The Grad class of 2017 are running a few fundraisers in the new year. Two

of the fundraisers are events. The first one is Karate classes being run every Saturday in January. The classes are free but a donation to

the grad class would be appreciated. The second event is a Crafting & Scrapbooking weekend March 24-26. Please check our Facebook

event page or flyers for details.

Please keep watch on our school webpage for upcoming events and join our Facebook page to see what is happening in and around our

school.

Happy New Year to you all,

Joanna Harvey

Supporting health and wellness priorities for students and staff

A message from the Superintendent

The new year provides a perfect opportunity to re-energize the many efforts underway in our school division to support the health and well-being of our students, staff and families. We know that ensuring a healthy physical, social and emotional environ-ment in our schools can positively impact student performance and academic achievement, which allows students to reach their potential.

Alberta Education is determined to incorporate First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) perspectives in Alberta schools, which is a priority we share in Chinook’s Edge. We are committed to honouring and celebrating Indigenous students and teachings. This en-hances the cultural and academic experiences not only for our Indigenous students, but for all students who enter our facilities. Under the guidance of our FNMI Steering Committee and our Learning Services team, part of this important work may involve introducing students to the culture and practices of the local Indigenous community through such activities as a Smudging Cere-mony. For information on this learning activity, please refer to the Smudging Ceremony document under the Parent section of our website at www.cesd73.ca.

We are grateful to everyone whose efforts are supporting our quality learning priorities for all students, and we wish each of our Chinook’s Edge families a happy and healthy new year.

Kurt Sacher

Superintendent of Schools

If you have a question for Superintendent Kurt Sacher or any Chinook’s Edge Trustee, please visit the ‘Parents Matter Question Box’ link under the ‘Board’ tab on our website at www.cesd73.ca.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Beginning in January, Chinook’s Edge will be accepting Kindergarten registrations for the 2017-2018 school year. Children must turn five years old by December 31, 2017 to begin attending Kindergarten in the fall of 2017. If you are interested in Pre-Kindergarten programming, please contact us! There are no school fees for Kindergarten students in Chinook’s Edge.

A Message From the Office:

Cremona School fees invoices will be mailed out at the end of January for Gr. 1 - 9. High School invoices will be mailed out towards the end of February (to allow for correct billing of options that students may change). Thank you to all that have remitted payment to date. You may contact the school office to discuss fees and a fee payment plan that works for your budget. You may also pay your fees online at www.chinooksedge.ab.ca. Please do not hesitate to contact Terry in the school office if you have any questions, 403-637-3856.

A message from Alberta Ed : As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school au-thorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. • In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10(change to grades 4-12 if applicable) will receive a survey from Alberta Education. • In February, students in grades 4, 7 and 10 (change to grades 4-12 if applicable) and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

Parent Council Update: Please join us Tuesday, January 10th, 7:00 PM in the Library for our next Parent Council meeting. At this meeting, Ms. Robbin Alexander, School and Family Wellness Worker will be presenting. Ms. Alexander is privy to non-academic factors such as social/psychological issues in the student population. She has observations of a student's experience and challenges at school and those issues which may hamper social and academic progress. Some of the common challenges right now fac-ing our students include anxiety, social interactions and friendship issues. Looking ahead to February, what school information would you like to have? Over the last few months School Administration and Parent Council have been working to incorporate ways to keep communication open and flowing. One of the suggestions is to have round table discussions in February. Two of the topics thus far are Options Classes and Concession. What are Op-tions Classes? How are they paired? Do you have feedback that you'd like to share regarding Concession? Please let us know what other items you might like to have discussed. Please note that due to the conflict with Valentine's Day, the Febru-ary meeting will be held on February 7th. Comments, questions, agenda suggestions and round table discussion items can be emailed to Gerard at [email protected] or Michael at [email protected]. See you on the 10th!

Band Society News:

Thank you to all who attended the Christmas Concert! It was great seeing our young musicians perform.

There are plans to get the Jazz Band going. Details to be announced.

The next Band Society meeting will be Wednesday, January 11th, 7:30 pm in the Library (with coffee and donuts!). At this

meeting we will be discussing options for trips and much more. If you can find time in your schedules we would greatly appre-

ciate your input and attendance.

Agenda items can be emailed to [email protected]* or [email protected] <[email protected]>*

We hope to see you there!

Cremona Science Fair Update Cremona School Science Fair will be on February 15, 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for students in Kindergarten to grade 12 to explore the wonderful world of Science! Leadership would like to say a giant thank you to all that donated to the food bank, we collected over 900 items!

Thank you to Miss Frank and her Grade 1 class for a fantastic semester as reading buddies for Miss Young’s English 10-2 class! My students and I have really enjoyed our time together, and our hot chocolate and cookie day was a perfect way to end our reading buddy sessions!

Congratulations to Madison Martin, Riley Kelly, Rowan Hunt, Chase Guhl, Georgia Bird, Kayma Bosch, Jake Collins, Andie Dufresne, Cohen Lashmar, Wyatt Hunt, Grace Diegel, Jonah Olfort-Weins and Landon Temple for excellent performances in the elementary Christmas concert!

Special thanks to Mr. Lerbekmo, Mr. Youngs, Mrs. Harvey and most of all Draygen Lewis for all of their technical support with the sound and lights for the Christmas concert.

Thank you once again to Ruth Maclean and Laura Allen and family for their donations to the breakfast program. We appreciate your help very much.

Miss Frank's grade one students worked hard in December to build a life size gingerbread house. Mrs. Frank's (Miss Frank's Mom) grade one class from Bowden joined in on the fun to establish the first annual gingerbread house competition! Both classes did an amazing job in creating their gingerbread houses!
