English II HONORS2018 Summer Reading

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – True story of the childhood of an award winning journalist who is raised by an alcoholic father and an unstable mother. This book does include adult situations and language, so if you would prefer another option, please email me ASAP so I can assign you an alternative book.

Please note that the book is MUCH different than the movie, which I have seen. Watching the movie in lieu of reading the book will let me know that you are not willing to put forth the effort required of you in English II Honors class, so you will be asked to change your schedule.

You will have several assignments based off your summer reading:

1. The attached page explaining what the phrase “sins of the father (or mother)” means to you.2. The attached page listing examples and consequences of “sins of the father”. 3. The attached page listing 20 words or phrases from the book that are unclear to you.

ALL 3 ARE DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2017 – NO EXCEPTIONS. FAILURE TO HAVE ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETED AND TURNED IN WILL RESULT IN 3 ZEROES AND A REQUEST FOR A SCHEDULE CHANGE OUT OF HONORS.

4. During the first 3 weeks of school, we will write 3 essays associated with this book.

I have a limited number of books, but you are welcome to come get one from me or you can purchase one for yourself that you can write in! :)

Remember any attempt to pass off the movie in place of the book and/or copying from a friend will result in zeroes!

Enjoy the book – it is really an entertaining read! See you in August

*Extra copies of this packet will be available on my website and in the main office at the high school.
