LOTS OF FUN AT THE WHNA PICNICSaturday, May 18, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The WHNA picnic took place on Saturday, May 18th. The picnic was a success thanks to many great volunteers, neighbors and local businesses. We enjoyed great food from O’Toole’s and music from Triad and perhaps an adult beverage or two. The kids enjoyed a bouncy house, airbrush tattoos, custom made balloon animals and fire hose fun with Fire Station 20!

This year we were more than grateful to receive a very generous donation to help offset the cost of the picnic. A sincere “thank you” to our neighbor Clint Kronenberger who owns Coqui Cyclery on Semmes!

We were fortunate that so many neighbors volunteered to help with the picnic this year. The picnic was a success thanks to all of you. We are also thankful for the neighbors

who border the picnic location who allowed us to use their outlets and power. Finally, we’d like to thank all of the residents that came out for the picnic this year. The picnic is a great reminder of why we love living in this neighborhood. n

Neighbors enjoyed delicious food and eachothers’ company. The youngest neighbors seemed to get a real kick out of the fire hose!

WHNA YARD SALEMany thanks to Louise Freedman for once again spearheading the neighborhood yard sale! n

WHNA HOME TOUR A GREAT SUCCESSJennie Barrett Shaw and Katherine Whitehead did an exceptional job co-chairing the biennial WHNA Home Tour! More than 500 tickets were sold and a donation from the proceeds will be made to a local organization. Luckily the rain held off until towards the end of the event. Thanks to all of our great volunteers, from ticket sellers, to tour guides! You made this event a lot of fun! n

Ann Munson and Sandy Gouldin greeted ticket buyers for the Home Tour. It takes an army to make these events run smoothly!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED AT THE WHNA NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP The WHNA Clean-Up volunteer crews completed another successful clean-up on Saturday, April 27th. The weather was absolutely fantastic for our volunteers to have a productive morning. We concluded most of our clean-up activities by 10:15 am thanks to the great support from our volunteers and the City. Special thanks go out to the City of Richmond Public Works for providing the trucks and hard working personnel to our clean-up effort…another ex-cellent partnership between Westover Hills Neighborhood Association and the City of Richmond. Cleanup chairman, Robert Kelly, would like to express his deep appreciation to all volunteers, especially team captains John Coski, Mike Schwartz, and Chris Gorey as well as Tommy Thompson and Greg Kemp for providing their pick-up trucks to serve in their “rover” roles. Jim Benton is not pictured but assist-ed Greg Kemp as they patrolled Westover Hill West and surrounding areas for neighbors’ discards. n

From left: Pat Lyle, Posy Green, Tim Grimes, and Team Captain, John Coski clean up the alleys east of the Boulevard while enjoying a pristine Saturday morning.

Bruce Gould (left) and Tommy Thompson retrieve a neighbor’s grill for disposal and load it up in Tommy’s pick-up truck to transport to our “rover” staging area on Peterborough.

From left: Owen Gorey, Chris Gorey, Zach Webber, and a smiling City employee prepare to load a neighbor’s couch into the back of a truck. Owen has participated in the clean-up for many years and is now graduating from Trinity High School and will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall. We appreciate Owen’s many years of support.

From left: Two super City workers, Matt Flynn, Louise Freedman, Carol Parke, Team Captain, Mike Schwartz, and John Clarke performed in an exemplary manner as they worked the tough alleys in the 5000 – 5300 blocks of the neighborhood.

One of Pat Lyle’s bucket lists items is now fulfilled; riding shotgun on one of the City’s garbage trucks!

Carpet Cuts5013 Forest Hill Avenue

There’s a good chance you’re already familiar with Carpet Cuts, which has been supplying carpets, runners and area rugs to the neighborhood, and far beyond, for many years.

Mike Mitchell opened the business in 2000, when he and his family moved back to Richmond from Indiana. From the beginning, the shop has done all its own

work in-house, including measuring, cutting, and bind-ing. Services include wall-to-wall carpet installation, and transforming any carpet into an area rug or runner made to specification.

Mike had previously worked as a carpet installer, and initially filled that role for the shop as well. Business was good from the beginning, and has continued to grow steadily over the years. In 2007, when the antique store next door left, Carpet Cuts expanded into that space.

The team now includes Mike’s wife Joan, son Doug, and Ernie Dudley, who help run the business. They’ve enjoyed the Westover Hills neighborhood tremendously, which they say has always been kind and supportive; the residents have been excellent, loyal customers, bring-ing considerable repeat business. Mike has nothing but praise for the location, citing a good working relationship with the City of Richmond and his fellow Westover Hills merchants, and no issues with crime.

Clientele has grown to include the entire Richmond area, as well as business from all over the state. When you stop in, check out the walls covered with Doug’s hobby: custom designed rugs, featuring various rock artists, sports teams, etc.

Open: Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00.

Editor’s note: We were sorry to hear about the closing of Happy Empanda. We wish them all good luck and hope they’ll bring their food truck to the southside. n

By Debbi Ingersoll

Did you know the #1 crime in the City of Richmond is thefts from vehicles?

Richmond Police Department started a campaign in May reminding everyone to remove valuables (or put items in your trunk and out of plain sight) and lock your vehicles.

This even applies to loose change you may keep for tolls. While it may not be very valuable to you, it’s an open invitation to criminals. Please take the extra step to lock your vehicles (as well as your windows and homes) and help keep our neighborhood safe!

With summer comes more trips. If you are planning on going on vacation and would like periodic checks on your home while you are away, go to the Richmond Police site: www.richmondgov.com/police, complete the Home Watch request form and mail or drop it off at the 3rd precinct.

Finally, with rising temperatures, keep an eye on your elderly neighbors. Check on them regularly and if you haven’t seen them in a while you may want to have RPD do a welfare check to make sure they are safe and sound.

Wishing everyone a happy and SAFE summer! n

Warm weather finally returns to Westover Hills! And with the heat, the neighborhood starts to come alive again. As we take the dog for a walk, we see more people enjoying our beautiful neighborhood. People are

out working on their yard and tending their gardens. You can hear children play-ing and laughing. And we might just catch a whiff of barbecue lingering in the air, especially the dog.

While everyone has been enjoying the great outdoors, the Neighborhood Association has been in full swing. Since the start of the year, several committees worked tirelessly to bring several, popular events to the neighborhood.

Just this spring, we saw the neighborhood cleanup, yard sale, Home Tour and picnic. Each event brought a significant amount of positive energy by benefitting our community and surrounding area

in their own way. For example, the yard sale partnered with Goodwill to help raise funds for Westover Hills Elementary School. The Home Tour was such a success, they set a new record in sales. So much so, we are looking to share that success by donating part of the proceeds to a local organization. We’ll share the recipient once the donation is finalized.

All of the credit belongs to the amazing people who volunteer their

time and effort to make this a truly amazing neighborhood. Without them, none of this would not have happened. If you see them around, tell them they are doing a great job.

As we look towards summer, there are more events coming to Westover Hills, but they need help from volunteers. If you liked what you have seen so far, and would like to help make an impact, let us know. There are plenty of opportunities for folks to step in and help. Laura Dysart is looking for volunteers to help out at the annual Fourth of July Children’s Parade (contact Laura at [email protected]). And we’re also looking for a second person to help with “Yards of the Month.” Active from April to September, This volunteer identifies the yards that are really making a beautiful splash and placing a sign in the recipients’ yards. If interested, send an email to [email protected].

We are thankful for all of our volunteers and are always grateful for new folks who step up to help! n

President’s ColumnBy James McCue

Progress being made on the Hill Standard development Neighbors will have noticed that construction has begun on the new development just west of the DaVita Dialysis Center on Forest Hill Avenue. Tenants announced for the commercial parts of the development include The Veil Brewing Co., Charm School (ice cream), Blanchards Coffee Co. and most recently, a market by Stella’s.

The entire project will be two separate buildings. One building will be dedicated to Veil’s taproom, rooftop patio and kitchen operations which will be handled by Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant. In addition to serving their own brews, the taproon will offer guest beers, cider and wine. The second building will house the other retail businesses and two levels of apartments.

The building has been designed by Fultz & Singh Architects and the businesses hope to open in 2020. n

This is part of the overall efforts in this corridor to slow speed and make this area more multi-modal friend-ly. The change was implemented from Prince George Road to Roanoke Street and went into effect in late March.

In other related traffic news, we are conducting a traffic study in the Forest Hill corridor that will look at traffic issues related to the SOTJ farmer’s market. We expect the results and recommen-dations from this study any day now and will work with our traffic engineers to develop a plan for funding necessary improvements.

As part of a proactive measure to increase safety in the SOTJ market, we have hired an off-duty officer to assist with traffic during the Saturday farmer’s market hours. So far, we have received positive feedback on this added en-forcement, but please contact us with your thoughts.

In non-traffic related news, we spent most of the spring focused on the city budget for the upcoming fiscal year and were able to reach consensus on a balanced budget with no real estate tax increases. This budget will be imple-mented starting July 1, 2019 and will in-clude a 900% increase in road mainte-nance, full funding for Richmond Public Schools and a nearly $2.5M increase in our Parks & Recreation budget. Thank you to everyone who reached out dur-ing the budget season to share their input on city priorities.

One last reminder that it is in our city code that all dogs are leashed when out in public. Please remember to do that

when you are walking your dogs in the neighborhood and/or parks. We have gotten a lot of complaints lately and there have been several off-leash incidents in Forest Hill Park. Please follow the law and be courteous to your neighbors and keep your dogs leashed in public.

I always enjoy meeting with you at WHNA meetings and look forward to the next one. The best way to stay up-to-date on 4th district announcements and events is to subscribe to my e-newsletter. Send me an email if you would like to get on our list. n
