Preface 

Dear student,

Welcome to Industrial Design Engineering. This guide is for the school year 2015-2016.

You can find a short version of the education vision as an introduction of thisstudy guide. In the appendixes there is more information on this vision.

> How do you use this guide?You will find all the information you need on Industrial Design Engineering in thisguide. Read about the vision of the course, what you can do after graduating andwhat is in the program for this year. Next to this you can find practical information,

like: a study calendar, information on the different modules, list of books eninformation on communication. In part C of this guide you will find informationabout the school's facilities.

> PERFormally this study guide contains the Programme and Examination Regulations(PER) of this course. In the PER all official procedures and arrangements aredescribed, like: demands regarding the propedeuse, how tests are administered,

how the internship is arranged, etc.. All general school rules, which apply to allcourses, can be found in "Student statute part 1" on the intranet(https://intranet.hhs.nl). For better readability of this guide the PER is a separatedocument.

A Study information

1 Short introduction

There is considerable demand for people with both specialist design knowledge and the

ability to think broadly. As a graduate open innovator you’ll fill a gap in the market. Since youcan build a bridge between research, design and entrepreneurship, you can set to work inalmost any professional field. International trade and industry, in particular, are keenlyawaiting your arrival.

2 What do IDE'ers do?

The work of open innovators consists mainly of designing, testing, managing and marketinginnovative solutions for trade and industry and non-profit organizations. In devising thesesolutions, you will take account of the changing needs of the user, the market and societyand, moreover, you’ll pay attention to the environment. You’ll also forge connections betweenvarious disciplines, technologies and involved parties. Only in this way, can you devise

creative solutions that genuinely make a difference to people and society.

3 What kind of roles do IDE'ers fulfil?

 After your degree, you can join the somewhat larger international corporations as a juniorinnovation manager. In this role you will recognize, mobilize and encourage creative ideasand you’ll find all kinds of ways of boosting the likelihood of an innovation being successful.

 Alternatively, you could become a project leader or an innovator in the field that you areenthused by. Think, say, of a business innovator, if you want to devise innovative businessmodels, or of a sustainability innovator, if you are interested mainly in sustainable solutions. Agreen innovator is another option. As a green innovator, you’d design, say, a public transportconcept with a reduced environmental impact or the cleanest form of transport powered by

natural gas.

Thanks to all the entrepreneurial skills you will have acquired during your programme, you’llnaturally be able to start your own company. A design consultancy, for example, that devisestechnical innovations for social media or ecologically responsible innovations. You’ll havelearned to really see what’s around you, to estimate chances, to assess risks and to takeappropriate action. These are exactly the skills you’ll need as a business owner.

4 IDE in The Hague

The core values of an [open] innovator are:

•  creative & curious: the [open] innovator is different, rebellious, and provocative. He or

she has an open mind and spots new opportunities. The innovator uses these traits toprovoke the existing order.

•  structured & integrated:  The innovator is able to research a context and is able tostructure information in order to pinpoint opportunities (in society, technology andbusiness), to formulate a clear assignment, and to generate feasible solutions.

•  socially responsible & future oriented: The Innovator is able to see current and futurechallenges in the world and has the ability to imagine and market sustainable solutions.

•  inspiring & convincing: The innovator can communicate his ideas in word and visionsand brings additional value for the long term through attitude, behaviour and actions.

4.1 Study climate 

We have 5 main values to guarantee a pleasant educational environment for students andlecturers. These values are important and indicate what kind of behaviour is expected, fromstudents as well as lecturers. Next to the main values there are several concrete house rules.

House rules

•  Be on time for each lesson. If you are late, join the class without disturbing the lesson.You are allowed to join until 15 minutes after the start of the lesson. You have to makesure your presence is accounted for when attendance is mandatory. Being frequentlylate is not tolerated.

•  Be on time for each test. If you are late, you are allowed to join until 20 minutes after thestart of the test.

•  Eating is not allowed during class.

•  During class all devices are turned off (no headphones with music). All mobile phonesare silent and inactive.

•  Laptops can be used during class, unless the lecturer decides otherwise.

•  If you have to leave early during class, consult the lecturer in advance.

•  Walking in and out of class is limited to a minimum. Going to the toilet, calling andsmoking can be done during the brakes.

•  Jackets and bags are not put on the tables.

•  The class room is cleaned after class. The whole group is responsible for cleaning. Don’tleave the class room before it is clean.

•  Listen to the person talking. Use adult behaviour during discussions and respect thedirections of the lecturer. Lively discussions are of course wanted, needed andstimulated.

•  Be prepared when attending classes. You have the appropriate materials for the classwith you. Pen, pencil, paper and agenda are your standard equipment. Other materialscan be expected for different classes.

•  Deadlines have to be met. If a deadline is postponed, there is a good reason for it. That'swhy everybody respects the deadlines.

•  Appropriate measures will be taken if the house rules are not respected. This can rangefrom a playful remark, sanctions or reporting to the team leader.

You now know what IDE is, what an IDE engineer does, how things proceed at IDE and whatyou can do with it in practice. In the following chapters you will find further practicalinformation, such as time schedules, the course table and descriptions for each course. Youwill also find information about where you can find even more information. Good luck withyour studies!

5 Courses and schedules

5.1 Structure of the curriculum 

The curriculum is divided into 4 modules of 10 weeks, plus 2 extra weeks at the end of theschool year, in total that makes 42 education weeks per year.

Exceptions:

The first week of the first study year is an introduction week. Regular education starts in thesecond week. In the second and third year regular education starts in the first week of thestudy year.

The resits of exams from module 4 are in week 11. Additional resits are in week 11 and 12 ofmodule 4. The grades of exams made in week 11 and12 are published at the end of August.

The first module of the second year exists of an internship abroad. The last two modules ofthe third year exist of a graduation project.

 Year 1 ExplorerThe first year is focussed on developing a research attitude and openmind to discover trends and opportunities. Developing research skills isnot enough, you need to be able to translate results into meaningfulconcepts, using visuals in all forms of presentation. This is the basis fordeveloping valuable solutions.

During this module you will discover your own values,interests, strengths and weaknesses. This training is all about the basics. You will learn the basics of drawingand sketching and you will learn how you can express yourself throughvisual communication. The main focus of this training is on self-expression.

Module 1.2 FuturingInnovation is evidently related to the future. Products or services onlyenter the market after they have been carefully thought through anddeveloped, which takes time. Innovative breakthroughs usually havethe affined aspect of the right place and time. Therefore a realinnovator must have the ability to think ahead, to “travel in time”. In thismodule you learn to “travel in time”. We teach you how you canimplement the answers to the above questions in order to create betterproducts or services; products or services that have a positive impacton individuals and on society. We dare you to forecast the future!

This company based project is the backbone of the entire module.During the project the impact of technology on society and on humanbehavior (in historical and current context) is explored. Acquiredinsights can be used to forecast the future in order to initiate newdevelopments for the companies involved. The main focus of thisproject is a structured & integrated approach. We also want to stimulateyour curiosity to open your eyes and to ignite you passion for thefuture.

Module 1.4 SolutionsOne of the key qualities of an [open] Innovator is the skill to translate

human and business insights into valuable solutions for people and

companies. This is one of the main and desirable abilities of a real

[open] Innovator. A lot of skills and knowledge can be learned from the

This course is a continuation of Design Project 2 (DP2). In this courseyour team starts from the design specifications or program ofrequirements that you have written down in your production booklet ofDP2. In this course you will arrange everything for a goodimplementation of your design. You go through 4 phases to realize theconcept: optimization, prototyping, evaluation and documentation.During the module a few master classes are given as additionalsupport during the design project. In this module you will get a lot of

 Year 3 EntrepreneurThe Entrepreneur can translate his solution into an attractive businessproposition. To enable this translation, students need to learn how toevaluate commercial appeal of concepts, how to set up a businessmodel for innovative concepts and how to develop synergetic

7 Digital communication

Read this guide thoroughly and totally. It contains important information about the daily affairsof the course. The digital information is mainly through five different official channels:

7.1 Student's net (intranet) 

General information about the school and the study is found at Student's net (intranet):https://intranet.hhs.nl. Within the Student's net any student may register for different coursesthrough 'My Profile'. An IDE student is required to register for the program Industrial Design

engineering and we expect that the education messages are read daily.

 At the Student's net it is possible to approach certain facilities, such as reserving computers,obtain schedules and grades.

The general site of the school (http://www.haagsehogeschool.nl) is more focused on externaland potential students. The site contains information on undergraduate and post-graduatelevel, facilities for students within and outside the university and links to related organizations.

7.2 Blackboard 

Blackboard provides students with information they need, such as information on thecurriculum, documents, assignments, discussion forums and tests. Each course isrepresented in Blackboard. When you follow a course, you must make sure that you are

'enrolled' to the Blackboard course at the start of the course.

Blackboard is accessible through the link http://blackboard.hhs.nl  from inside THU andthrough the link https://blackboard.hhs.nl from outside THU. To log in, you use the e-mailpassword.

7.3 Osiris 

The Hague University uses the Osiris system to administer study progress and results. Theresults of the courses can be found in Osiris, and official appointments in the context ofcoaching (called study career guidance in Osiris).

In addition, you must register for retakes in Osiris. Note: A retake is any possibility offered

after the first test of a course in your regular program (according to the year in which youstarted).

You log in via https://student.osiris.hhs.nl:4445/student/StartPagina.do with the same logindata as your e-mail and Student’s net. Osiris can also be approached from the Student's netand without the need to log in again.

The test results in Osiris are definite grades.This in contrast to interim test results,announcements on blackboard, etc. If you encounter Osiris grades that are incorrect, report itimmediately to the lecturer. You can however not derive rights from the grades in Osiris.

7.4 E-mail 

When you are fully registered within the university you will receive a personal e-mail addresswith login code. You can access your e-mail address anywhere in the world accessiblethrough https://studentmail.hhs.nl. Also, your student mail is accessed via the Student's net.This e-mail address is used as an official means of communication so make sure that youalways check it and keep it available. The storage capacity of this mailbox is limited, so makesure you regularly delete old mail.

8 Communication

 As a programme we find it important that students and lecturers are as informed as possibleand that there is an efficient way of communicating with each other. We would like to worktogether well without misunderstandings and irritations about the organization of education.Clarity is of great importance and therefore we have written down what students and lecturerscan expect from each other. If these agreements are not respected, we can call each other toaccount.

8.1 What do we expect of students? 

•  Students have the responsibility to report their absence or illness to the Secretariat bytelephone at: 070-445 8762. The absence or illness is noted down, lecturers can do theirown inquiries about this at the Secretariat.

•  Students have the responsibility to report prolonged absence or illness and personalcircumstances that affect their education to their personal coach and other lecturersinvolved as soon as possible.

•  Students with (potential) study delay due to personal circumstances immediately make anappointment with the student counsellor. See the 'student facilities' part in this guide.

•  Students have the responsibility themselves to make arrangements in advance withlecturers and to arrange other things, as compensation for absences longer than 3 days.

•  Students provide access via the student mail. (No full mailboxes!)

•  Students indicate address changes via Studielink, Osiris and their coach.

•  Students watch each day at the student's net, on the Blackboard in their courses and theirstudent mail.

•  Students enrol in all courses they will follow before the start of the module. You can read

how to enrol on the student's net at Study> Curriculum Training.•  Students can un-enrol for Blackboard courses, making it impossible to continue to ask

grades in the course. Don't un-enrol before you are fully finished with the course. It isbasically safe to Un-enrol if your grade is visible in Osiris. You can read how to un-enrolon the student's net at Study> Curriculum Training.

•  Students can view intermediate results of courses in My Grades in the Blackboardcourse, these grades are always subject to change. Definitive grades are processed inOsiris. Even these grades are not legally binding. Only the rating list that comes with yourpropaedeutic certificate or final certificate will be legally valid.

•  Students respond within 3 working days on an e-mail requesting a response.

8.2 What can students expect of  lecturers? 

General lecturer communication

•  Lecturers announce in the first lecture / meeting or the opening of the module how theBlackboard course is used and where to find the information from the course.

•  Lecturers announce in the first lecture / meeting or the opening of the module how theydeal with attendance rules and tardiness.

•  Lecturers make schedule changes in unforeseen circumstances known at least 24 hoursin advance to students through the student's net. If it is not possible to inform students 24hours in advance, then students will be personally informed via E-mail.

•  Registration lists for meetings with lecturers will hang on their door. Lecturers shouldinform students about the existence and location (room number) of the registration lists.

Lecturers and E-mail

•  Lecturers email as little as possible to groups of students (students look at the channelsof information: HHS student portal, Blackboard and Facebook).

•  Messages for individual students go through student mail.

•  Lecturers respond within 3 working days to an e-mail. If it is a complicated problem, thenat least an acknowledgment of receipt is send and a period in which the mail will behandled is given.

Lecturers and Student's net (intranet)

•  Lecturers put education information and education reports and annual reports at theStudent's net.

•  Lecturers notify students of their absence or illness on the Student's net. If the lessonsare cancelled or if there are any changes will be posted on the corresponding Blackboard

course. Don't assume the lesson is cancelled, regularly a replacement will be arranged.•  Lecturers keep their who-is-who information up to date. The lecturer can change study

programme, first name, discipline, and attendance in their profile.

Lecturers and Blackboard

•  Lecturers put course information on Blackboard.

•  Lecturers put a course guide on Blackboard, one week before the start of the course.

•  The lecturer 'recycles' the course one week before beginning of the course. Until that timethe course has an announcement that it concerns the 'old version' of the course.

•  Lecturers post schedule changes because of illness in the Blackboard course (and areference on the intranet). In addition lecturers make it clear which lessons continue (by areplacement) and which are cancelled.

•  Lecturers communicate clearly on where certain documents can be found on Blackboard(not "is available at the Blackboard", but "it is in that course, under that button, in thatfolder").

•  Lecturers determine if assignments are submitted via Blackboard or not. That depends onthe nature of the assignment and the manner of administration of the teacher.

•  Lecturers report important updates and new documents via the Announcements.

•  Lecturers use the Gradebook of the course for intermediate results and final grades. Finalgrades will be processed by the teacher in Osiris. If Excel lists are used in Blackboard forintermediate results or group formats, only the student number and not the name of thestudent is published.

9 Minors for IDE students

There is a space of 30 credits of minors in the IDE program. Minors should either broaden ordeepen the knowledge and skills gained in your program and give you the opportunity tospecialize in your curriculum in a way that suits you.

When do you take your minors?

You are expected to do two minors of 15 credits or one minor of 30 credits in the first half ofyear 3. One of those minors is offered by IDE. If you want to do something else, you have tomake sure to learn the same competences offered in the IDE minor.

What can you choose from?

You can take a minor that is offered by IDE but you can also choose a minor from elsewherein THUAs or another accredited university. You can find minors all over the Netherlands inwww.kiesopmaat.nl . You can make a maximum one 15 credits minor from assorted electives.The other 15 credits have to be designated minors.

From the minors within THUAS Exam Board has divided the minors into 3 categories:

Minors not suitable to IDE students You are not allowed

Minors suitable to IDE students You are allowed

Minors maybe suitable to IDE students You have to ask approval from the Assessment committee (Exam Boardrepresentative)

For all minors from outside THUAS and minors consisting of assorted electives you always

have to ask approval from the Assessment Committee (acting on behalf of the Exam Board).

How to enrol?

To enrol into the minor of your choice you need to contact the party that is giving the minor.For all minors of THUAS you have to enrol via Osiris. In Osiris you can also find all the

information about the THUAS minors.

N.B. Keep in mind that you have to do 2 things! 1. Getting into the minor of your choice viaOsiris or whoever gives the minor. 2 Checking if it is a pre-approved minor and if not ask forapproval from the assessment committee.

You should also look closely at the procedures that apply to the program and the institutewhere you want to follow the minor. Often there are deadlines for registration.

10 Education for external students.

11 Consultation and participation

Within The Hague University there are two levels of participation from students: the schoolboard and the Academy council. Both councils have students sitting in them. On educationlevel there is the educational committee (EC).

11.1 Educational committee 

The Educational Committee (EC) has a majority of students. There is also at least onelecturer in the EC. The EC meets at least 4 times per year and provides the programme with

advice in the field of study quality. In doing so, it includes the results of evaluations as asource of information. The EC has rights to advice on the curriculum and the Programme andExamination Regulations (PER). If you have an interest in the EC, you can get in contact withMs. Janneke Sluijs [email protected]

11.2 Faculty council 

The faculty council of the faculty Technology, Innovation and Society consists of employeesand students from the corresponding faculty. They obtain their seats through annualelections. The faculty council will consult periodically with the faculty manager on variousmatters within faculty and the university.

11.3Complaints pr ocedure

 If you have a complaint or suggestion regarding the content or process of the education youcan go to different persons (for subjects with a confidential nature see Chapter 12). Firstmake your complaint known to the relevant lecturer or course coordinator. If you cannot workit out with the teacher or coordinator, you can file a complaint directly with the educationalcommittee or the examination committee. The programme is obliged to deal seriously withthe advice and comments from the EC. If the EC accepts your complaint, then the issue willbe discussed during the staff meeting. You will get an answer from the team leader. If thisanswer does not solve your problem, please contact the Board of Appeal of The HagueUniversity (see Legal Protection Desk at Student's net). In the final decision regarding yourcomplaint, the rules and procedures in the Programme and Examination Regulations (PER)are leading.

11.4 Evaluation procedure 

It is in the spirit of the open innovator that we are always looking to improve on our coursesand methods. You are always welcome to give your feedback and ask your questions. Aslong as you are respectful you will always be taken seriously. And most lecturers activelyseek out feedback during the courses.

We also have an official evaluation process. After a module all students will be invited toparticipate in an evaluation of the courses of that module. The results of this evaluation aregiven to the course builders as input and to the programme committee. The programmecommittee is a representative body of students that advises IDE on a variety of matters. (Forthe official description see the PER). The programme committee discusses the results of theevaluation and then gives an advice to the Quality and Curriculum Committee (QCC) of IDE.The QCC uses the advice and evaluation reports that course builders make for theimprovement of the curriculum.

12 Counsellors

12.1 Student counsellor  

The student counsellor acts as independent trustee and advises students how to faceproblems within and outside the university. The student counsellor is the designated addressfor questions that (in-) directly have to do with studying in general (see below). The studentcounsellor listens to your problems and questions and gives advice if possible. The studentcounsellor has two main functions:1. The student counsellor is source of information for topics like:

•  Student grants;

•  Binding study advice;

•  Personal problems (illness, psychological problems, family circumstances,etc.);

  Dyslexia and/or language problems;•  Disabilities & Study;

•  Immigrants issues (study, language, cultural issues);

•  Rights and obligations in the student charter;

•  Accommodation;

•  Financial support (emergency fund, scholarship fund and graduate fund) withstudy delay;

•  Appeals to Board of Appeal;

•  Other programmes / study revise (also subscribe and unsubscribe to aprogram);

•  Top sport;

•  Study abroad.

2. The student counsellor is the contact person in case of personal problems. These maybe personal problems which have to do with directly with your education or programme.But they don’t have to be related to the university. The student counsellor can help andadvice and also has the option to refer students to persons or institutes within oroutside the university (psychologist, counsellor sexual harassment, Nibud etc.) or toother experts. The conversations are strictly confidential and the content is not passedto third parties (including parents), unless the student gives personal permission.

Report problems as soon as possible to prevent misery with binding study advice and studentgrants.

12.2 Confidential Adviser  

Undesirable behaviour and unjustified slandering

The Hague University strives for a pleasant and safe study and working environment for allstudents and staff. There is no place for undesirable behaviour and unjustified slandering.Undesirable behaviour includes: discrimination, racism, abuse, harassment, forms ofaggressive behaviour, sexual harassment, comments about appearance and pawing. It canbe about a single very serious behaviour, but also seemingly harmless, undesirable behaviourin the long run can cause serious damage.

What to do when you're dealing with undesirable behaviour?If you're dealing with undesirable behaviour or unjustified slandering you can go to one of theconfidential advisers of The Hague University. The starting point is that you at all times

determine whether there is unwanted conduct. An arm around a shoulder may be just a nicegesture but if it is (repeatedly) against your will, it can be seen as undesirable behaviour.

What happens when you come to a confidential adviser?

If you report to the confidential adviser he will first have a conversation with you anddetermine what exactly is going on. The confidential adviser listens to you, offers mediation, isindependent, speaks to nobody about your complaint and undertakes nothing without yourconsent.  The confidential adviser will work together with you at a possible solution. Sometimes it may be enough just to talk freely about your questions and doubts. But it isalways you, as complainant, who determines what will happen further.

13.2 Schedule office 

The schedules of the faculty are made at the faculty office. The schedules are publishedthrough the intranet by the office, not later than one week before the new module begins.

13.3 Student card 

 At registration the student receives a student card. This applies for the initial registration and

the continuation registrations. When present in the building students should be able to showtheir student card. The student card is your ID for registration. You are required to carry thestudent card with you and to show it on request during  lectures, tutorials, practice, exams,etc.. If you lost your student card, you can get a duplicate for a payment of  ! 11.00 at theStudent Enrolment Office. Save the student ID card and the registration certificates. If youformally unregister, the student card must be returned. You can top money on your studentcard for printing, lunch and the coffee & snack machines.

Below is a description of the university’s student facilities given in alphabetical order. Althoughthe university aims to update the information during the year, for current information (e.g.opening hours, locations, telephone numbers and organised activities) the university refers to

the information regarding student facilities on the Students’ net for instance (see "Studentfacilities") and by selecting the option: “who, what, where & organisation”.

ACKU

 ACKU is a service organisation dedicated to culture, art and nightlife for all students in TheHague. For which purposes ACKU maintains good contacts with the city’s cultural institutionsand places of entertainment. ACKU guides students during projects in the field of music,dance, theatre and film.Every month ACKU takes students out for dinner and a visit to one of The Hague’s theatres.HAPPEN EN STAPPEN is a wonderful low-budget initiative ( ! 7.50 for dinner and show).

 ACKU also provides several courses including capoeira, yoga, photography, belly dancingand drama lessons; tickets for shows, handy nightlife tips and help at organising cultural

Paying at the university

You can use your bank cards at the restaurants, or use your student card. To top money onyour card, there are machines located at:- Central Restaurant- Restaurant 2nd floor Ovaal- Restaurant 3rd floor Slinger

Security

Each university building (main building Laakhaven, Laan van Poot, Delft and Zoetermeer) isusing external security services for proper protection. Laan van Poot, Delft and Zoetermeerare using supervisors who are responsible for closing the building.

Laakhaven is using security services round-the-clock. Security staff can be found next to themain entrance (Ovaal 0.01). Internal telephone number: 8001. A security company isresponsible for opening and closing the Laan van Poot building every day. During openinghours the janitor is granted supervisory tasks. The building is available for renting every

evening. During these events a security guard carries out supervision.

 A security company is responsible for opening and closing the building in Delft every day. Indaytime the janitor carries out supervision. If the building is open in the evening (Mondaysand Wednesdays) a security guard from the security department carries out supervision.

Security staff is to be considered host in every single building. They are granted a signallingbut also an active task towards staff and students. They are responsible for opening andclosing the building, for the keys, supervision, monitoring activities and observance of thehouse rules, handling objects lost, conducting a fire check and a coordinating role duringcalamities. Security staff, in close deliberation with the security coordinator of Laakhaven,keeps closely in touch with the district’s police department. This cooperation has also givenbirth to a consulting hour for the community police offer in the main building. This consulting

hour can be used to seek advice, report incidents and/or exchange experiences. For moreinformation or if you wish to make an appointment you may contact the head of security.

Library

The university has a central library in the Laakhaven building and annexes in the buildings onLaan van Poot, Delft and Zoetermeer. The library has a topical collection of books, a wideselection of magazine subscriptions, theses of nearly all studies, educational videos and

digital sources of information, collected in the so-called digital library. The digital librarycontains databases, digital magazines and e-books. The digital library is available for allstudents and members of staff on location and at home. The digital library can be accessedthrough the Students’ net and Blackboard. In addition to the direct road to a databank onemay also approach several databanks using the ‘simultaneous search’ option.

The central library has approximately 500 study places, of which about 150 are equipped withPCs and some with video players. Two ‘silent areas’ exist one of them containing PCs, wherestudents can study individually in peace and quiet. Training takes place in the instructionroom on the first floor.

The library facility in Delft is a self-service facility. Students may contact the reception shouldany problems present themselves.

The university library is freely accessible to the university’s students and staff. Most of thematerial is available for lending, which occurs on display of the student card or library passand is free. Lending terms can be extended at the desk, by telephone or on the Internet.

Many theses are available in digital format at www.hbo-kennisbank.nl. Graduating studentsare recommended that they include the final assignment in the HBO databank through thestudy.

To use the (library) services, the Library Regulations of The Hague University apply whichhave been included as appendix 5 in part 1 of the Students’ Charter.

Disruptions of the multifunctionals in all locationsDisruptions of the multifunctionals on the corridors must be reported to the janitor oralternatively to the Service Centre. A disruption may never be rectified by the user. Reportingdisruptions of the multifunctionals one should always state the number shown on theequipment. First Aid (EHBO)/ Emergency Services (Bedrijfshulpverlening or BHV)

In accordance with the Working Conditions Act (Arbeidsomstandighedenwet) the universitymust have a professional in-house emergency service at its disposal.The university’s employees are trained. These are the so-called BHV-ers or emergencyservice staff. They have received special training to intervene in case of an emergency, suchas:

•  first aid activities in case of calamities (EHBO),

•  restrict/control files,

•  prevent/restrict accidents and sound the alarm in case of an emergency,

•  evacuate employees, students and other individuals who might be inside thebuildings.

In the event of calamities, BHV staff will remain responsible until the official emergencyorganisations arrive to take over the responsibility. BHV staff receives regular training duringrepetition courses and ‘silent’ exercises to keep their knowledge and skills in shape.

In the event of a calamity in the first phase the team manager will decide followed by the headof the BHV, on the actions to be taken and whether the Crisis Management Team should becalled in. The Crisis Management Team decides whether partial or full evacuation is requiredand makes agreements regarding internal and external communication. The team consists ofthe head of BHV, the chairman of the Executive Board, the director of the Facility Companyand the Communications and Marketing Manager.

University Sports

The university has a so-called Bureau Hogeschoolsport which offers a broad programme ofsports activities throughout the academic year. The Head of Bureau Hogeschoolsport issupported by the sports council of student representatives of different studies.

 A large part of the activities (classes, group training, introductory courses, competitions) areoffered in the sports hall, while many sports are offered at external sports accommodations atinteresting discounts. The university’s own sport accommodation also has a beautiful fitnesshall.

Sports, fitness and spinning cards can be purchased from the Bureau Hogeschoolsport orOvaal 0.72. Here, students can also sign up for several introductory courses and

ICT Service

The ICT Service provides ICT facilities, telephone services and audiovisual tools (also called AV equipment) at the university. To ask questions about using these functions and reportdisruptions one should contact the Service Desks.

The Central Service Desk (SL 2.58) in The Hague has additional facilities such as scanners.Separate ICT tools such as storage media are also available at the Hague Shop in Atrium atTalentlaan (OV 0.79).

International Office

The International Office takes care of incoming international students and outgoing registeredstudents. For incoming students the International Office arranges VISA, residence permits,insurances and so on. For incoming master, exchange, and prep school students the

International Office also arranges registration and admission.

Registered students may address the International Office for information on internships andstudies abroad, subsidies, insurances, residence permits for the Netherlands and so on, sobasically everything related to international mobility. Intranet and website

The university website consists of an internal network for students (Students’ net) and for staff(Staff’s net) and a section accessible for external visitors.

Students’ netStudents of all locations (Laakhaven, Laan van Poot, Delft and Zoetermeer) have access to adata information system that integrates information and communication systems: Students’net.

Via Students’ net, students can find all of the relevant information on their study. Here thestudent can find among others messages from the faculty, the university, test results,schedules, statutes and regulations, elective units of study, minors, forms, registrationsystems and ‘who-what-where’. The net also provides information on student facilities such asthe library, the ICT service desk, student deanship and so on. The Students’ net also provides

direct, single-sign-on access to external applications including webmail, Blackboard, OSIRIS(study progress) and IRIS (schedules).

To access the Students’ net students must log in via http://studentennet.hhs.nl. Students maylog in from any computer with an Internet connection, inside or outside the universitybuildings.

Staff’s netStaff’s net was created for the university staff. To access Staff’s net an employee must log in.

External websiteThe website http://www.dehaagsehogeschool.nl provides all non-protected information. Theexternal website focuses on external target groups such as potential students, deans,

graduates, companies and (internship) organisations. One common external website existsfor all university buildings.

Lockers

Main buildingThe lockers available inside the building are categorised into short-term and long-termlockers. The lockers at the library are short-term lockers. The long-term lockers can be foundin the underground bicycle shed and also opposite Slinger 3.62.

Short-term lockers (1 day)

Short-term lockers can be found along the wall next to the library entrance. These lockersmay only be used when the building is open.

 After closing time the lockers near the library will be opened and contents will be taken forsafekeeping. You can collect your stuff from the security department once you have paid thecustody and administrative costs (Ovaal 0.01, telephone number 070 – 445 8001). Theuniversity shall not be held liable for any damage or loss of properties.You are deemed to be familiar with the terms for using lockers. Laan van Poot At Laan van Poot free lockers are available where students may store their sporting bags/clothing. Students must provide for their own padlock and will be responsible for their stuff. Atthe end of the academic year students must empty the lockers, or this will be done for themby the security staff. The university shall not be held liable for any loss or damage ofproperties. Also, at the end of the academic year all bicycles are to be removed or they will beremoved.

DelftLockers can be found in the hall next to the wardrobe on the ground floor. In Delft only long-term lockers exist (from the first week to the last week of the academic year). Costs are  ! 25

plus  ! 10.50 deposit. The Service Centre will provide more information on the general (rental)terms, payment of rental costs and deposit as well as collecting the key.

Career centre

What to expect from the Career Centre?During the Centre’s opening hours students can walk in, ask the career adviser questions andconsider training options (documentation and sites). Students can choose from several partsand thus put together their own course. Parts can be:

•  individual test projects (interest, study attitude and motivation, capacities,

personality),

•  discussions (about continuing one’s studies, approaching the job market, dilemmas,putting together a plan of action),

•  modules (about quality and pitfalls, wishes and values, skills and sources ofinspiration)’

•  and a group-based reorientation course.

Emergency fund

Under certain circumstances students of the university can appeal to the Emergency Fund.The latter provides temporary financial support to students who can prove they are in anacute financial emergency. The support is a short-term interest-free loan. The Fund is notintended as a supplement or correction to the normal system of student grants and loans andneither for payment of tuition fees. Applications must always be submitted in writing to thestudent counsellor of the study concerned. The student counsellor will send the written

application to the Emergency Fund Committee. This committee decides on whether the loanwill be rewarded.

Supporting Dutch education (BOON)

HBO students must have sufficient command of the Dutch language. Both in their futureprofession and during their years of study they must be able to write reports and advisory

documents correctly. Students who have been accepted for an HBO study, however, usuallyprove to have poor command of the Dutch language. For instance, they have difficultystructuring texts, formulating thoughts, adducing arguments or spelling words/verbs. Limitedvocabulary or poor sentence structure usually presents an obstacle, particularly for studentswhose mother tongue is not Dutch. Therefore, The Hague University provides a programmeto help students develop their Dutch written and oral skills. This programme is arranged byBureau Ondersteunend Onderwijs Nederlands (BOON).

Differences per studyFaculties decide for themselves whether they wish to use the Ondersteunend OnderwijsNederlands programme or not. In some studies the programme is part of the curriculum, whileother studies incidentally offer students the possibility to follow the programme. Other studies,again, do not use the BOON programme.

BOON programmeThe following applies to faculties using the BOON programme. To promptly and efficientlydevelop a picture of the linguistic skills of first-year students, students will take an initial Dutchcourse at the start of their studies. Depending on the test results they will qualify for asupporting Dutch course. Lessons are dedicated to among others Business Writing, SpellingVerbs and Speaking Skills. Regional Adviser (RegioRegisseur)

The Regional Adviser provides different opportunities for students who wish to contact thebusiness community. The RA will actively search for knowledge questions from the businesscommunity and answer those questions from education. Some of these questions can beanswered by means of a project (assignment), an internship or a final project. Through thewebsite (www.regioregisseur.nl) the Regional Adviser offers students the possibility to presentthemselves to companies in the Haaglanden region. This might lead to interesting contactbetween companies and students usually involving successful cooperation.The companies vary from multinationals to one-man businesses while demand is diverse andchallenging.

Food and drink

 All buildings have (several) cafeterias, although supply may differ per cafeteria. All universitybuildings (including restaurants and lecture rooms) have vending machines selling drinks andfood. Food and drink is available in the central restaurant, the three cafeterias, a coffee corner,Café DOK 75 and from the vending machines on site (banqueting).

The central restaurant has the biggest assortment: coffee, tea, milk products, soft drinks,bread and sandwich filling, snacks, fruit, cake, candy, soup, hot and cold snacks and warmmeals. Halal food is available while the outdoor terrace at Strip can be used if the weather is

good.

The faculty cafeterias offer coffee, tea, milk products, soft drinks, bread and sandwich filling,snacks, soup, fruit, cake and candy. Next to the main entrance is coffee corner Mockamoreselling special coffee flavours, pastry and bagels. Student Counsellor

The student counsellor is an independent official who gives students advice and informs themabout study matter, guides student during personal problems of material and immaterialnature and, wherever required, takes on a mediating and/or referring role.Counsellors have a supporting task with an eye to better study results and less study delay.Every study programme has a counsellor’s office.

The counsellor’s service broadly consists of the following:•  providing help from an independent and confidential position, advising and

supervising students with study problems, disability and/or problems of a personalnature, among which the students’ own living situation, including specific referrals;

•  providing information to groups and individual students with regard to education andstudy in general, student grants and loans, funds and social arrangements;

•  mediating between a lecturer and/or study and a student to solve study problems,problems regarding the educational system of the study and/or the university and howthe student functions. If a satisfactory solution is not reached, the student may beassisted in the procedure of lodging an objection or appeal;

•  detecting bottlenecks and advising the board of directors upon request and otherwise,team managers, the Examining Board and the educational career supervisors on

education and everything it involves.

Student Psychologist

The student psychologist can solve study and student problems. This means that a studentwith study problems or personal problems interfering with his study can call on the studentpsychologist. Help offered at The Hague University is mainly tuned to study problems. Helpcan consist of discussions, training/courses, workbooks/information magazines, web pagesand computer programmes. The student can also receive a referral within or outside theeducational institute.

Students can make an appointment with the student psychologist on their own initiative, butalso if they have been referred by the student counsellor or the student career adviser. Forthe first appointment students can use the office hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdayand Friday in OV1.68 of the main building. At the Career Centre (OV 1.68) you will find a liston which students may sign up for the office hours. A brief discussion should suffice todiscuss problems and find out the best way to solve them. Confidential adviser in case of undesired behaviour

 Any student who is confronted with undesired behaviour can speak to the confidential adviserof his faculty or study, or alternatively to another confidential adviser at The Hague University.

The student can discuss the problem confidentially with the adviser and together seekpossible solutions.
