The MegaRAID IDE PCI Bus Master IDE RAID Disk Array Controller providesa cost-effective way to achieve higher transfer rates and reliability. LSI Logic'sMegaRAID IDE controller supports two IDE channels and up to four drives. Itsupports the following drive modes: PIO 0-4, DMA 0-2, and Ultra DMA 0-5.The RAID levels supported are RAID 0, and RAID 1. The highest data transferrate in UDMA mode 4 is 66 MBs, and in UDMA mode 5 is 100 MBs. Thismanual describes the MegaRAID IDE (ATA/66) and MegaRAID IDE 100(ATA/100) IDE controller.

Chapter 1 Overview 1

1 OverviewThe MegaRAID IDE RAID Controller is a short PCI Adapter card that provides two IDEchannels with Ultra ATA/66 (MegaRAID IDE) or Ultra ATA/100 (MegaRAID IDE 100)capability. MegaRAID IDE provides a simple and cost effective way to improve theperformance and reliability of your storage subsystems. MegaRAID IDE offers hightransfer rates, and fault-tolerant data redundancy during high performance applications byusing low cost Ultra ATA drives in desktops, workstations, or low-end servers.

You can connect from one to four drives to this card using IDE cables (Ultra ATA drivesneed special IDE cables) and configure these drives using a simple setup menu embeddedin the MegaRAID IDE BIOS. The card supports the following drive modes: PIO 0-4,DMA 0-2, and Ultra DMA 0-5. In addition, it supports RAID levels 0, 1 and 10. You canuse striping (RAID 0) to improve performance or mirroring (RAID 1) to improve datasecurity. RAID 10 provides both RAID 1 (disk mirroring) and RAID 0 (data striping.)This manual describes the MegaRAID IDE controller.

IDE Channels MegaRAID IDE supports two IDE channels.

IDE Connectors MegaRAID IDE has two 40-pin internal connectors.

Controller MegaRAID IDE provides a single chip solution for a PCI to IDE/ATA controller. Itreceives PCI commands and data, which it processes and sends to the IDE/ATA bus.

2 Introduction to RAIDRAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is an array of multipleindependent hard disk drives that provide high performance and fault tolerance.A RAID disk subsystem improves I/O (input/output) performance over acomputer using only a single drive. The RAID array appears to the hostcomputer as a single storage unit or as multiple logical units. I/O is expeditedbecause several disks can be accessed simultaneously. RAID systems improvedata storage reliability and fault tolerance compared to single-drive computers.Data loss because of a disk drive failure can be prevented by reconstructingmissing data from the remaining data and parity drives.

RAID Benefits

RAID has gained popularity because it improves I/O performance, and increasesstorage subsystem reliability. RAID provides data security through faulttolerance and redundant data storage.

Improved I/O Although disk drive capabilities have improved drastically, actual performancehas improved only three to four times in the last decade. Computing performancehas improved over 50 times during the same time period. RAID allows you toaccess several disks simultaneously.

Increased Reliability The electromechanical components of a disk subsystem operate moreslowly, require more power, and generate more noise and vibration thanelectronic devices. These factors reduce the reliability of data stored on disks.RAID systems improve data storage reliability and fault tolerance compared tosingle-drive computers. The additional drives make it possible to prevent dataloss from a disk drive failure. You can reconstruct missing data from theremaining data and parity drives.

RAID Overview

RAID is a collection of specifications that describe a system for ensuring thereliability and stability of data stored on large disk subsystems. A RAID systemcan be implemented in a number of different versions (or RAID Levels). Thestandard RAID levels are 0, 1, 3, and 5.

Disk Striping

Disk striping writes data across multiple disk drives instead of just one diskdrive. Disk striping involves partitioning each drive storage space into stripesthat can vary in size. These stripes are interleaved in a repeated sequentialmanner. The combined storage space is composed of stripes from each drive.MegaRAID IDE supports stripe sizes of 32 KB to 4 MB.

For example, in a four-disk system using only disk striping (as in RAID level 0),segment 1 is written to disk 1, segment 2 is written to disk 2, and so on. Diskstriping enhances performance because multiple drives are accessedsimultaneously; but disk striping does not provide data redundancy.

Stripe Width Stripe width is the number of disks involved in an array where striping isimplemented. For example, a four-disk array with disk striping has a stripe widthof four.

Stripe Size The stripe size is the length of the interleaved data segments that are writtenacross multiple drives.

Disk Mirroring

With mirroring (used in RAID 1), data written to one disk drive issimultaneously written to another disk drive. If one disk drive fails, the contentsof the other disk drive can be used to run the system and reconstruct the faileddrive. The primary advantage of disk mirroring is that it provides 100% dataredundancy. Since the contents of the disk drive are completely written to asecond drive, it does not matter if one of the drives fails. Both drives contain thesame data at all times. Either drive can act as the operational drive.

Disk mirroring provides 100% redundancy, but is expensive because each drivein the system must be duplicated.

Physical Drive

The physical drive is the IDE hard disk that is connected by cable to theMegaRAID IDE card. The hard drive contains platters which are coated withmaterial so that allows them to record data magnetically. Another importantfeature is the read/write head, which hovers over the surface of the platter. Youcan store and access data much more quickly on a hard disk than on a floppydisk.

Physical Drive States

A physical disk drive can be in one of these states:State Description

Online The drive is functioning normally and is a part of aconfigured logical drive.

Logical Drive

A logical drive is a partition in a physical array of disks that is made up of contiguousdata segments on the physical disks. A logical drive can consist of an entire physical arrayor part of an array.

Disk Rebuild

You rebuild a disk drive by recreating the data that had been stored on the drive beforethe drive failed.

Rebuilding can be done only in arrays with data redundancy , such as RAID level 1.

MegaRAID IDE automatically and transparently rebuilds failed drives with user-definablerebuild rates. If a hot spare is available, the rebuild starts automatically when a drive fails.Rebuilding can start automatically at boot up also if the mirror drive is degraded and aspare is available.

Note: If a hot spare is not available, the failed disk drive must be replaced with a new disk driveso that the data on the failed drive can be rebuilt. The replacement disk drive capacitymust be greater than or equal to the failed drive it replaces.

Hot Spares

A hot spare is an extra, unused disk drive that is part of the disk subsystem. It is usually instandby mode, ready for service if a drive fails. Hot spares permit you to replace faileddrives without system shutdown or user intervention.

MegaRAID IDE implements automatic and transparent rebuilds using hot spare drives,providing a high degree of fault tolerance and zero downtime. The MegaRAID IDE BIOSconfigurator allows you to specify physical drives as hot spares. When a hot spare isneeded, MegaRAID IDE automatically selects the spare and include it in theconfiguration.

Please note that Spare drives are applicable only in arrays with redundancy, such as RAIDlevel 1.

Consistency Check

In RAID, check consistency verifies the correctness of redundant data in an array. It alsohelp to find disk errors. For example, in a system with a mirrored drive, checkingconsistency means making sure that both the member-drives of the mirror contains thesame data.

Fault Tolerance

Fault tolerance is achieved through the use of mirroring (RAID 1.) Mirroring provides100% redundancy. See Disk Mirroring on page 6 for more information.

RAID 0

RAID 0 provides disk striping across all drives in the RAID subsystem. RAID 0 does notprovide any data redundancy, but does offer the best performance of any RAID level.RAID 0 breaks up data into smaller blocks and then writes a block to each drive in thearray. The size of each block is determined by the stripe size parameter, set during thecreation of the RAID set. RAID 0 offers high bandwidth.

By breaking up a large file into smaller blocks, MegaRAID IDE can use multiple IDEchannels and drives to read or write the file faster. RAID 0 involves no parity calculationsto complicate the write operation. This makes RAID 0 ideal for applications that requirehigh bandwidth but do not require fault tolerance.

Uses RAID 0 provides high data throughput, especially for large files. Any environment that does notrequire fault tolerance.

Strong Points Provides increased data throughput for large files. No capacity loss penalty for parity.Weak Points Does not provide fault tolerance. All data lost if any drive fails.Drives One to four.

RAID 1 duplicates all data from one drive to a second drive. RAID 1 providescomplete data redundancy, but at the cost of doubling the required data storagecapacity.

Step 1 Unpack

Unpack and install the hardware in a static-free environment. The MegaRAIDIDE controller card is packed inside an anti-static bag between two spongesheets. Remove the controller card and inspect it for damage. If the card appearsdamaged, or if any of items listed below are missing, contact LSI LogicTechnical Support at 678-728-1250. MegaRAID IDE is also shipped with:

Step 4 Install MegaRAID IDE Card

Choose a PCI slot and align the MegaRAID IDE controller card bus connectorto the slot. Press down gently but firmly to make sure that the card is properlyseated in the slot. The bottom edge of the controller card should be flush with theslot.

Connect the IDE cables to the IDE devices, and the IDE connectors on theMegaRAID IDE. The MegaRAID IDE controller provides two IDE connectors.

J1 is the IDE Channel 2 40-pin connector for the secondary IDE drive.

J2 is the IDE Channel 1 40-pin connector for the primary IDE drive.

Cable Suggestions System throughput problems and malfunctioning may occur if proper IDEcables are not used. We recommend that you use 80-conductor, 40-pin UltraATA cables for all drives. Two cables come with the retail package. The cablemanufacturer is Y.A. Cable USA, Inc. The cable part number is CBL-ATA66.

For ATA/66 or ATA/100 drives, 80-conductor, 40-pin Ultra ATA cables must beused, and the length of the cable must not exceed 18 inches. These cablesminimize noise level.

Note: Do not attach ATAPI drives to MegaRAID IDE. MegaRAID IDE does notsupport ATAPI devices, such as CD-ROM, SL120, and Zip drives. Connect onlyhard disk drives to the MegaRAID IDE adapter and connect ATAPI devices tothe IDE channels on the motherboard or to any other offboard IDE/ATAPIadapters.

Step 6 Power Up

Replace the computer cover and reconnect the AC power cords. Turn power onto the host computer. Set up the power supplies so that the IDE devices arepowered up at the same time as or before the host computer. If the computer ispowered up before an IDE device, the device might not be recognized.

Step 7 Configure System BIOS

Make sure the system BIOS is configured correctly for MegaRAID IDE. This isdone using the CMOS Setup facility available within the motherboard/serverboard BIOS. Normally no special setting is required for MegaRAID IDE. TheMegaRAID IDE product is essentially an IDE Controller. Each MegaRAID IDEcard you install will require an available PCI IRQ; make sure an IRQ is availablefor each controller you install.

Step 8 Run MegaRAID IDE Configuration Utility

Press <Ctrl> <M> to run the MegaRAID IDE Setup Utility. See Chapter 5Configuring MegaRAID IDE, on page 21, for information about runningMegaRAID IDE Setup Utility.

Configuring Arrays

Organize the physical disk drives in arrays after the drives are connected toMegaRAID IDE. An array can consist of one to four physical disk drives,depending on the RAID level.

Configuration Strategies

The most important factors in RAID array configuration are drive availability(fault tolerance), and drive performance.

Maximizing Drive Availability You can maximize the drive availability by increasing faulttolerance. Use RAID 1 or mirror configuration to attain this objective.

Maximizing Drive Performance You can optimize drive performance by using striping. SelectRAID 0 or striping to configure an array for optimal performance.

Performance and Availability You can achieve both drive performance and availability. SelectRAID 10 for this configuration. You will need four drives to configure RAID 10.

Selecting a RAID Level

Configuring Arrays

After you have installed the MegaRAID IDE controller in the system and haveattached all physical disk drives, perform the following actions to prepare aRAID disk array:

Creating a Mirrored Array From an Existing Drive

To build a new mirrored array from an existing drive, connect the current driveand a new drive to the MegaRAID IDE card. Perform the following steps:

• Turn on the computer and Press <CTRL><M> to start the MegaRAID IDESetup Utility while it is booting.

• Create an array by using F4 Option. Change the array type to Mirror.• Now include the existing drive and the new drive to this array. You can

identify the existing drive and the new drive by where they are connected.• Start the rebuilding process by pressing <Enter>. The setup will prompt for

the target drive name. Select the newly connected drive as the target drive bypressing <Space Bar> and then <Enter>.

• The rebuilding process will start. If there are any errors during the buildingof the array, you will be prompted with a message box. You can choose toignore the error and proceed, or stop the rebuilding process.

Note: To make the rebuilding process faster, enable DMA Read/Write using the <F3>key.

Using the MegaRAID IDE Setup Utility

Setup window The Setup window has three sections:

• array information• physical drive information• help information

Only the Array Information window and Physical Drives Information windoware active. The Array Information window can be edited; the Physical DrivesInformation window cannot.

To access this screen, press <Ctrl> <M> during boot-up.`

Array Information This section of the screen displays all the disk arrays configured. Use thissection to create, delete or edit the existing configurations. The disk arrays aredisplayed as a node in a tree, like Windows Explorer. When opened, each nodedisplays the properties of the array. Press <Up Arrow> and <Down Arrow> tonavigate the properties and press <Enter> to edit your selection.

• Array configuration type or RAID level (Stripe, Mirror, RAID10, or sparepool)

• Drive numbers of the physical drives included in the array• Stripe size (32 KB to 4 MB) which is valid for Stripe and RAID 10

configurations only• Whether the system is bootable from one of the configured arrays• Build Array function, which is valid for Mirror and RAID 10 arrays. This

option is used to build one drive from another.

Physical Drive Information This section displays all the physical drives connected to the IDEchannels and their properties. The <Up Arrow> and <Down Arrow> are used tonavigate the Physical Drive Information window. The menus are as follows:

• Channel ID (Primary or Secondary)• Connection ID (Master or Slave)• Disk array that the physical drive is a part of• Model number• Size in MB of each drive• The status of each drive (online, failed, or rebuilding)

Note: Information listed in the Physical Drive Information window cannot be edited.Only the <TAB>, <Up Arrow>, and <Down Arrow> keys will work when thecontrol is in the Physical Drive Information window.

Physical Drive Options In the top right corner of the Physical Drive Information are thephysical drive options. The available options are as follows:

Note: These options apply to all drives attached to MegaRAID IDE.

Help section The Help section of the Setup window screen displays hints on available options.The Help section also provides a list of keys that you can use to perform tasks,such as auto configuring, creating or deleting an array.

Switch Windows (TAB)

The <TAB> key is used to switch the control back and forth between the ArrayInformation and the Physical Drive Information windows.

Auto Configure Stripe (F1)

Press the <F1> key to auto configure a Stripe array. When you do this,MegaRAID IDE automatically creates a Stripe based array based on theavailable physical drives attached. The Stripe size is set for the optimum level(64 KB).

Auto Configure Mirror (F2)

Press the <F2> key to run auto configuration. When you do this, MegaRAIDIDE automatically creates arrays based on the available physical drives. Aminimum of two free physical drives are required for mirroring.

Create Array (F4)

Press the <F4> key to create a disk array. When you create an array, a default arraytemplate is created. You must edit the array properties to complete the array creation. Usearrow navigation keys to highlight a property field and press <Enter> to edit thatproperty. See the following section for information about setting each property field.

Array Type By default an array is created in stripe mode. When you select this field, a pop-up windowdisplays the following options:

SPARE POOL

Select the intended RAID mode by using the arrow navigation keys and pressing <Enter>.The SPARE POOL option is not a RAID mode, but a way to assign physical drive(s) ashot spare to be used in case of a mirror failure. When a mirror configured array has adrive fail, a spare drive can be used to replace the failed drive and rebuild the array.

Note: To rebuild a drive from the SPARE POOL, the size of the physical drive in SPAREPOOL must be greater than or equal to the smallest drive in the array.

Drive(s) There is no default setting for this field. You must select the drives for the configuredarray. When this field is selected, a pop-up window will display all the available physicaldrives with check-boxes.

Use the arrow navigation keys and press the Spacebar to select or deselect the drive ordrives to be part of the array. Press <Enter> when done. If you select mirror mode as thearray type, you must select two drives to be in the array. This pop-up window will appearonly when configuring RAID 0 (Stripe) and RAID 1 (Mirror) arrays. A RAID 10 arraycontains drives in each Stripe of the array and only two drives are allowed in each stripe.The maximum amount of Stripes is limited to four Stripes.

Stripe Size Stripe size field applies to stripe mode arrays only. By default, an array is set up with 64KB stripes. Edit this field to change the default stripe size. The options for the size of theStripes are listed in the table below.

Note: You cannot change the stripe size of an array that has already been configured.

Bootable This determines which of the configured arrays should be used for booting the systemwhen MegaRAID IDE is selected as the boot device. The options are Yes or No.

BOOT OPTIONYESNO

You can select the boot device from the system BIOS setup. Only one array is allowed tobe bootable in a system.

Drive Size This field cannot be edited. It displays the size of the array. When the array type is stripe,the drive size is the total of all the drives selected (one or more drives.) When mirror,drive size is shown by individual drive, and when spare pool, drive size shows the totaldrive capacity.

Build Array The Build Array option is valid for RAID 1 (Mirror) and RAID 10 arrays only. It is usedto rebuild the array using a drive from the SPARE POOL. When Build Array starts, itwill prompt the user to select the target drive. It does this because both drives can be stillonline. Once the target drive is selected, the rebuild will start.

Note: A drive Rebuild can take a long time depending on the size of the drive. A 2 GB (UDMA5) drive takes two minutes to rebuild when DMA mode is enabled.

Delete Array (F5)

Press the <F5> key to delete a currently configured array. Use arrow keys to go over tothe array you want to delete and then press <F5>.

Caution

Use this option with caution. When you delete an array,you lose the array configuration and the data saved in

the array.

Restore Old Configuration (F6)

Press the <F6> key to restore the configuration that was there before you entered theMegaRAID IDE setup utility.

Edit Options (F7)

Press the <F7> key to set the options to enable/disable Drive Write Cache, Boot SectorVirus Protection, and DMA transfers. To select an option, press <F3>, move the cursor tothe desired option and press the spacebar. This puts a check by the option. Press <Enter>to activate the new option.

A status box for each item displays in the Physical Drives Information section of thescreen. The box shows whether the option is on or off. The Write Cache displays WC-ONor WC-OFF, the Virus Protection box displays VP-ON or VP-OFF, and the DMARead/Write box displays DMA-ON or DMA-OFF. When you turn the option on, thestatus box changes color, from red to green. The window for the Write Cache, VirusProtection, and DMA options is shown below.

Initialization (F8) (CNTRL-M)

This procedure initializes a logical drive to prepare it for the installation of anoperating system. The initialization deletes (writes 0 to) the initial 100 MB of thelogical drive created.

Initialization is the process of writing zeros to the data fields of a logical driveand, in fault-tolerant RAID levels, generating the corresponding parity to put thelogical drive in a Ready state. Initializing erases previous data and generatesparity so that the logical drive will pass a consistency check. Arrays will workwithout initializing, but they can fail a consistency check because the parityfields have not been generated.

Save and Exit (F10)

When you have completed the array configuration, press <F10> to save theconfiguration and exit. If you do not want to save the configuration or anychanges that you have made, press <Esc>. Subsequent message boxes display forconfirmation; respond to them appropriately. Note that when a new array isconfigured, its partition record is invalidated.

Installing the Windows 95/98/Me Driver

Use the following procedure to install Windows 95/98/Me onto RAID-configured drives connected to MegaRAID IDE.

Step Description1 Install Windows 95/98/Me in the standard way.

When Windows discovers the MegaRAID IDE card, it displays a dialog boxtitled New Hardware Found. In Windows Millennium Edition, Windows98, and Windows 95 4.00.950B, the detected device is called PCI RAIDController. In older versions of Windows 95, the detected device is listed asUnknown PCI Device.

2 If you do not see the dialog box described above, follow the procedurelisted below in the table under the heading Update Windows 95/98/MeDriver.

After Setup extracts the software, it starts the MegaRAID IDE Console InstallationWizard. If you did not choose to “Run this program from its current location”, you needto run the SETUP.EXE from where ever you saved it to (your hard drive).

MMC Snap-in MMC (Microsoft Management Console) is a common platform for launchingmanagement applications in the Windows environment. MegaRAID IDE Console plugsinto MMC to provide the ability to manage arrays, physical drives, and the activity log.

DMI Agent (optional) The DMI (Desktop Management Interface) Agent is used to display the manageableattributes of MegaRAID IDE to a DMI-enabled management console. These are attributessuch as RAID level, stripe size, and physical drive properties.

Note: The MegaRAID IDE Console package does not include a DMI-enabled console. Inaddition, you need DMI Service Provider 2.0 in the system in order to install the DMIAgent.

SNMP Agent (optional) The SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Agent is used to display themanageable attributes of MegaRAID IDE to a SNMP-enabled management console.These are attributes such as RAID level, stripe size, and physical drive properties.

Note: The MegaRAID IDE Console package does not include a SNMP-enabled console; youneed a third-party SNMP-enabled console. In addition, SNMP Service Provider fromMicrosoft must be installed in the system in order to install the SNMP Agent.

Spy Service

Overview The Spy Service program looks for errors, failed drives, and status changes. It can markdrives as failed after the error threshold is reached and start automatic rebuilds. It startsautomatically and runs in the background of MegaRAID IDE Console.

Spy Service icon An icon for the Spy Service displays in the bottom right corner of the MegaRAID IDEConsole screen (in the tray bar). The icon is the figure wearing sunglasses on the left sideof the screen below.

The icon is color-coded. Green means no system problems,yellow means there are errors, and red warns of a criticalproblem which could cause the system to fail.

Right clicking on the Spy Service icon will show the SpyServices menu. You can start the Spy S.M.A.R.T. error,stop SPY media error, or the Run MegaRAID IDEConsole.

Control Panel Spy Service starts automatically and runs in the background of MegaRAID IDE Console.You can use the Control Panel to start or stop the program or display its status.Click on Start and select Control Panel. Click on the Services icon (two gears) in ControlPanel (in Windows NT Only).

Overview MegaRAID IDE Console is a MMC (Microsoft Management Console) snap-in.MMC is a common platform for launching management applications in theWindows environment.

Starting MegaRAID IDE Console To activate MegaRAID IDE Console, go toStart>Programs>MegaRAID IDE>MegaRAID IDE Utility. The MegaRAID IDEConsole window displays:

Object frame The object frame (the left frame) displays the objects in a tree in the same way asWindows Explorer. The objects presented are arrays, physical drives, and the activity log.

Information frame The information frame (the right frame) displays information corresponding to theobject selected in the left frame. This window can be viewed as Small Icons, Large Icons,List, or Details, as in Windows Explorer.

Context menu The context menu displays when you right click on the items in the object or informationframes. You can use the menus to perform actions or access help.

Toolbar The toolbar displays menus, such as Action and View, and icons you can use to performactions or access help. The toolbar is located over the object and information frames.

The MegaRAID IDE Console Properties window displays.

You can use the General settings tab to set how often MegaRAID IDE Consolechecks the arrays for errors. You can set the interval between checks from 0.5seconds to 120 seconds.

Note that if you use a short interval between error checks, the workload on thesystem is greater. If you use a long interval between checks, there is a delay inupdating the system information.

In addition to error checks, you can choose whether to fail a drive if it has morethan a specified number of errors.

Arrays Object

Select Arrays from the Console tree in the object frame to view the followinginformation about the arrays:

• The array name• Array mode (performance or reliability)• Status (online, degraded, or offline)• Logical drive(s) in this array• Physical drive(s) is this array• Stripe size (for RAID 0 arrays)• Capacity of the array• Error threshold (1 to 32 errors)

This information displays in the information frame. The RAID mode for astriped array (RAID 0) is called performance, and for a mirrored array (RAID 1)is called reliability.

8 Troubleshooting

Drive Connection Tips

1. If you have two drives, connect one per channel.

2. The performance of MegaRAID IDE is best with one drive per channel.

3. Use the same type of drives or drives with similar capability (in terms of speed andcapacity).

4. Do not use dissimilar drives on the same channel.

5. Always use 80-conductor Ultra ATA cables.

6. Ensure that proper jumper settings are used for Master and Slave in each channel. Donot use the Cable Select jumper setting.

7. Do not connect any ATAPI devices (CD, ZIP, LS120 etc.) to the MegaRAID IDEcontroller.

Configuration and Setup Tips

1. Before installing any OS, switch Virus Protection OFF. This is required in order toprepare the partition sector (Master Boot Record.)

2. Set Drive Write Cache to ON for better performance. You must be careful whenusing this setting. If you lose power or do an improper shutdown, you may lose data.

3. For better performance in Windows, use FAT 32 for arrays less than 8.4 GB.

4. If you need to change array configuration, back up your data first. When an arrayconfiguration changes, previous data in that array is lost

5. If you get an unexpected message, such as “Drives Missing” or “ConfigurationMismatch”, switch off the system and verify all connections, IDE cables and powercables.

6. Before taking a drive off, always clear the configuration in that drive. If all drives areto be taken out, you can press <Ctrl><Q> after boot up to clear the configuration. Ifyou want to clear configuration in a single drive, use the “HyperFix” program.

7. If you get a “Configuration Mismatch” message after adding new drives, that isbecause the new drives had been used before and the configuration on the drives wasnot cleared. If this occurs, press <Ctrl><M> to go to the setup and create the arrayconfiguration as needed.

8. When you press <Ctrl><Q>, remember that you will lose all data in all the drives.

A note on Auto Configuration Options in the MegaRAID IDESetup Utility

The auto configuration options in the MegaRAID IDE BIOS setup utility are for autoconfiguration of Stripes, Mirrors and RAID 10. The auto configuration of stripes optionalways looks for drives in different channels. If found in different channels it clubs themtogether to form an array. For example, if there are four drives (two each in differentchannels), this option will configure two arrays with drives from different channels for thearray. But when there are two drives and they are all in the same channel, then this optionwill configure two arrays with one drive in each array. This is because the autoconfiguration for RAID 0 (Stripe) is based on performance.

For RAID 1 (Mirror), the auto configuration option a minimum of two drives arerequired. For RAID 10 auto configuration option, a minimum of four drives arerequired. Also, the RAID configuration does not support a stripe size less than 32 KB.

MegaRAID IDE drivers for Microsoft Windows based operating systems do not supportdrives across different controllers (physically separate cards). But the auto configurationoption takes all the drives from the system for configuration and it will club drives acrossthe controllers (physically separate cards) to form an array. So if you are going to usemore than one card, make sure that the drives in the array do not fall under differentcontrollers (physically separate cards).

MegaRAID IDE Console Tips

1. Install Internet Explorer 5.x or higher (Windows NT and Windows 9x only) beforeyou install MegaRAID IDE Console. (Not required)

2. Install NT Service Pack 5 or higher for Windows NT 4.0 before you installMegaRAID IDE Console. (Not required)

3. Note that if you uninstall Internet Explorer, MegaRAID IDE Console will not workproperly.

4. To track errors and start the Rebuilding option automatically when using the Mirror(Reliability) configuration, the background program “MegaRAID IDE Spy” isrequired. The background program is represented by an Icon in the System Tray(bottom right corner of your desktop).

5. You can stop MegaRAID IDE Spy by right clicking on the tray icon and thenselecting the Stop option.

6. It is recommended that you keep MegaRAID IDE Spy running all the time.

7. When MegaRAID IDE Console starts, it automatically starts MegaRAID IDE Spy.

8. If you do not want a drive to be marked as Failed in the Mirror configuration, rightclick on the MegaRAID IDE Console, select Properties and uncheck the option in theGeneral Settings tab.

9. Note that the physical drive errors are not erased once detected. If you want to clearthe log , use the “HyperFix” program.

10. The MegaRAID IDE driver ensures the Mirrored disks are always consistent. OnlyRun Consistency Check if you want to discover errors throughout the entire disk.

11. The error log shows errors on the physical locations of hard disks. The errors arepotential problems, but do not necessarily cause data loss immediately. The FileSystem can take care of the error sector or the errors could fall outside of allpartitions.

Run ScanDisk in Windows 95/98/Me or Chkdsk in Windows NT for all partitions totake care of the errors.

Using HyperFix

Note the usage & options for HyperFix program.

/U ------ Unlock the drive. Used to switch the drive from PowerUp-Standby to PowerUp-Active Mode.

Example:

"Hyperfix/D00/EC" means erase the configuration from the drive connected toPrimary Master.

"HYPERFIX /D10 /C2 /U" makes the Secondary Master in Card 2 to PowerUp in ActiveMode.

Problems and Suggestions

Problem Suggested SolutionThe MegaRAID IDE sign on message does notappear during boot up (If MegaRAID IDE card isproperly installed, you should see this message.)

1. Check whether the MegaRAID IDE card is insertedall the way down to the PCI slot.

2. Move the card to PCI slot.3. If System BIOS is set for silent boot, then no

message will appear on screen. This is not aproblem. To make sure, set the silent boot option todisabled in the system BIOS.

Drive(s) connected to MegaRAID IDE are notdetectedORThe system hangs when MegaRAID IDE adapterROM scans the IDE channels.

1. Make sure the Ultra ATA cables are used.2. Make sure that the cable ends are connected

properly.3. Make sure that the power cables to the drives are

connected properly.4. Make sure that the Master/Slave jumpers are used

properly.5. Change cables.6. If everything fails, change the drive(s).

BIOS reports that a mirrored array is in degradedmode.

Make sure all physical drives are properly connected andare powered on.Reconnect, replace, or rebuild any drive that has failed.

One of the hard drives in a mirrored array has failed. Replace the drive with another drive that has the samecapacity.

If this message displays while booting:“NO ROM BASICSYSTEM HALTED”

There are no active partitions. Run FDISK to set theactive partition.

Rebuilding does not take place inside theMegaRAID IDE BIOS setup utility.

Try disabling the DMA in the edit options using F7 key.In some cases the DMA based rebuilding may not work.

If the system hangs when more than one MegaRAIDIDE cards inserted.

Disable one of the EEPROMs in the MegaRAID IDEcard by jumper settings in the MegaRAID IDE Card..

Windows 9x (95, 98, Me) takes a long time tocomplete the installation process.

Make sure the Write cache is ON. You can set the writecache status using F7 key in the MegaRAID IDE BIOSSetup utility.

System hangs or blue screen appears whileinstalling Windows 98 during "11 minutesremaining" phase.

Make sure that the CDROM drive is connected properly.Also, verify the proper CD is inserted into the drive.

Operating system does not boot. Check the system BIOS configuration for PCI interruptassignments. Make sure some Interrupts are assigned forPCI.

Make sure that you have properly selected the BootDevice in the system BIOS setup (CMOS Setup).
