Breaking Open the Word
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary TimeOctober 18, 2015
First Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11Isaiah speaks of how the Servant of God will have to give his life up for the sins of other people. Because of this suffering, the Servant will receive eternal life for himself and all the people whose sins are forgiven because of him.
Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16Jesus is considered to be the new high priest and mediator between God and his people. Fortunately, Jesus has experienced the same temptations as other people, and so he has more tolerance of our weaknesses.
Gospel: Mark 10:35-45Two of the disciples ask Jesus that they be allowed to sit at his right and left side when he comes into his glory. Jesus explains that they should not be concerned with their position. Instead they should concern themselves with serving others just as Jesus was planning to serve many in giving his own life for their sins.
Consider/Reflect: We might think of a high priest as portrayed in an epic biblical movie, or recall the role of the father of John the Baptist. What a different image the letter to the Hebrews presents, revealing Jesus in this sacrificial role, identifying totally with humankind, like us in ‘all things but sin’.We should find comfort in this passage, as He is described as one who sympathizes with our weakness, not condemning but understanding. The author encourages us, directing the way we address the Christ with total confidence. If we do so, we find two great gifts, mercy, which Pope Francis tells us, is God’s
greatest gift to us, and the timely help we need to do and be better.
How do I approach Jesus at this moment? We approach with confidence, seeking mercy, finding strength in His help.

“LIVING THROUGH GRIEF”SUPPORT GROUP
(formerly Bereavement) Tuesdays - 3:00 PM -
4:30 PMSt. Theresa Faith Formation Center
Facilitators: Kim Coyle, Gwen Nolan, and Rosemarie Martelli
The death of a loved one is certainly one of life’s most difficult moments. A time of grief and mourning is a normal, natural response to loss of someone you love. Your grief journey is just that, yours. There are no rules or normal time frame. Grief is not a sign of weakness. We respond to grief with all that we are; physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The intense reactions of grief can cause pain to the person of even the strongest faith. Though difficult, the journey through the grief process is a necessary one. We believe that when shared, our burdens are lightened. We offer a place to share your concerns and experiences, support others and be supported by others who are going through, or have gone through, this painful journey.
We are offering a support group at St. Theresa’s, called “Living through Grief.” This group will meet a total of eight sessions to share experiences of loss. These will be held on: Tuesdays 3:00-4:30 pm at St. Theresa’s Faith Formation Center 450 Radio Road Little Egg Harbor. If you have any questions and /or would like to be part of this group, please call Kim at 609-748-9254.

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH Talking to Your Doctor
A doctor’s appointment can be over in a “blink of an eye”, so make the best use of your time with your physician.Things to consider prior to your next doctor’s appointment are:
Prepare – jot down specific concerns or any symptoms you are experiencing.
Discuss your main problems first – pinpoint one or two chief complaints to talk about first to insure your most pressing issues get addressed.
Share major life events – tell your doctor about a recent job loss or divorce, it can actually help the doctor assess your health and provide you with better care.
Confirm what happens next – As you end your appointment, be sure you know what your next steps are. Will the doctor call you with test results? Do you need to see a specialist etc.?
HEARING LOOP SYSTEM
For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass
6
due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews
(when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
