Breaking Open The Word

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 5, 2015

First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5 Ezekiel is moved to respond to the call of God and to accentuate his teaching with a direct reference to the Work of God. Second Reading: 11 Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul had questioned the value of his suffering, and God replied, “My grace is enough for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul then realized that although he was weak against persecution, he was strong in faith. Gospel: Mark 6:1-6 Jesus could do little for those in his own part of the country, for their lack of faith in him was so great. Therefore, he spent much of his time teaching in neighboring villages instead. Consider/Reflect: We receive information from countless sources-internet, texts, twitter, TV, radio. We are most receptive to positive, pleasing news, things which make us feel good and uplifted. Sometimes we receive the results of a medical test, reports on a condition that is either reassuring or satisfying. But the information is important, so that a condition may be addressed. Ezekiel had a unique responsibility to ‘tell it like it is’. He knew those to whom he was sent were hard and rebellious. He had a mission. A prophet in scripture is a spokesperson for God. Ezekiel called his people back to the Lord. Jesus’ hometown people took offense at His teaching. They didn’t want to hear the challenge He proposed. The church today needs prophetic voices. Pope Francis’ messages are pleasing to most yet he corrects and directs. Archbishop Romero’s voice was silenced by an assassin’s bullet. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta spoke through kindness and compassion. May we all learn to hear and listen to the voice of God directing us through the Spirit.

The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:

the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @ 1:00 PM

St. Joseph Cafasso (l811-1860) was born to a peasant Italian family. He was born with a severe birth defect - a deformed spine and was very short and crippled all of his life. Discerning a call to Holy Orders, he entered a seminary in Turin, where he would meet another famous saint - St. John Bosco - whom Joseph taught and encouraged him in his mission to help street youth.

Joseph was an excellent professor of moral theology, preacher and confessor. He performed his duties so well that he became known as the "Priest's Priest." He spent his entire days in prisons to preach, offer comfort to prisoners, and hear their confessions as well as advocating improving prison conditions. For his holy work, he earned the name "Priest of the Gallows". St. Joseph Cafasso is the patron saint of prisoners, prisons, and prison chaplains. His feast day is June 23rd.

Apparently, he led many souls to Jesus in his short life. What a blessing and salvation to those he ministered the sacraments to. However, in today's world with a woman's "right to choose", this amazing saint of God would possibly been aborted.

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH

Sunscreen The only certain way to avoid sunburn is to stay inside. Since that is not practical especially in our waterside community, the use of sunscreen is essential for everyone. The role of sunscreen is to absorb, reflect and scatter damaging ultraviolet light which can cause sunburn and other skin damage. Sunscreen should be applied 20 to 30 minutes before you go into the sun. Follow the directions on the sunscreen but always consider the following: Use at least one ounce of sunscreen, (enough to fill a shot glass), to cover all the exposed areas of your body. Don’t forget your ears, face, back, shoulders, the back of your knees and legs, and your feet. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or more frequently if you are in the water and towel yourself dry. Be sure your sunscreen offers UVA & UVB protection. Also, use a lip balm with sunscreen. Minimize your sun exposure during the peak hours of 10AM–4PM and don’t forget to use a wide- brimmed hat & sunglasses.

We look forward to welcoming Father Arian to our staff and our community.

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM

For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
