Breaking Open the Word

The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) June 7, 2015

First Reading: I: Exodus 24:3-8 Moses explained to the people the commandments he had received from God. Upon hearing them, the entire community immediately agreed they would do as God had told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls and sprinkled the people with their blood, calling it the blood of the covenant they had made. Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices, but instead he offered up his own blood to cleanse all people of the transgressions they had committed under the first covenant with God. Christ instead brought a new covenant, which, if kept, would lead to eternal life. Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover supper. During the meal he blessed bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my body.” He then offered them wine and called it his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be poured out on behalf of many”. Consider/Reflect: In the reading from Exodus we see the source of Jesus’ language about the blood of the covenant: it refers to the blood of the sacrificed bulls that was sprinkled on the altar and on the people of Israel to seal their covenant with God. The Israelites were a small minority of the peoples of the world, yet God’s covenant was with them alone. When Jesus speaks at the Last Supper of his own blood as the blood of the covenant, he is expanding that covenant: no longer for the few who are Abraham’s descendants, it is now for the many whom he calls to be his disciples. This opening up of the covenant to the many through the blood of Jesus is so radical that the Letter to the Hebrews declares it a “new covenant”. So rather than restricting God’s love to a small group, Jesus’ words and actions show that that love is being offered to all. “Many” does not mean “not all,” but rather “not only a few”. If we believe that Christ’s blood was shed for all, what day-to- day difference should this make in how I treat people? *********************************************

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH

Just a Reminder!

We, at St. Theresa’s, are fortunate to have AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in our buildings. One is located in the Parlor of the church (on the left as you enter the Gathering Space) and the other is in the hall of the Faith Formation Center (on the right near the kitchen). Many of our ushers have had CPR classes which included training so they know how to use the AEDs in a time of a Life Threatening Crisis until the EMTs arrive. Please follow their directions if this should occur in your presence. Additionally, there are First Aid Kits available in the Church (should you need assistance, ask the ushers) and in the Faith Formation Center (on the wall outside the kitchen).

BABY BOTTLE FUNDRAISER The following is our final total and tally of the money received from the baby bottle fundraiser. The Knight of Columbus collected $9,300.00 from the baby bottles. They generously gave St. Theresa’s Respect Life Ministry $8,000.00 to distribute to the agencies that will assist young women in a crisis pregnancy. The Knights of Columbus will use the remainder of the money in the future to acquire more baby bottles. The following is a breakdown of how the Respect Life Ministry distributed the money from the baby bottles: • $4,000.00 - Good Counsel Agency for Crisis

Pregnancy, Riverside, NJ • $l,500.00 - Birthright of Toms River, NJ • $l,500.00 - Open Door Pregnancy Center,

Toms River, NJ • $500.00 - Diapers for the local Food Pantry • $500.00 - Respect Life Fund to assist local

women or their babies in emergency need. Once again a heartfelt thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their help and support. A very special “Thank You” to all those who so generously filled the baby bottles. Thanks again and May God Bless you and your families.

The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:

the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @ 1:00 PM THE FOLLOWING IS FROM: St. Pope John Paul II Papal Mass in St. Louis Missouri on January 27, 1999:

THE CHURCH'S ANTI-DEATH PENALTY POSITION

The new evangelization calls for followers of Christ who are unconditionally pro-life to proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life in every situation. A sign of hope is the increasing recognition that the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.

USCCB - A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death When Cain killed Abel, God did not end Cain's life. Instead He sent Cain into exile not only sparing his life but protecting it by putting a mark on Cain, lest anyone should kill him on sight.

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM

For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
