Winter Warm Up is just days away, if you haven't registered yet, you need to hurry. Your District Team has been working very hard for you in planning this terrific, fun and educa-tional event, we need your support. Motorcycle State Trooper Joey Watson will once again speak on motorcycle and driving safety. Joey's training seminars are high energy and places safety behind your handlebars where respon-sibility belongs, 94% of all accidents are operator error. After recently attending the annual win-ter motorcycle conference hosted by IDOT in Springfield I learned the following statistics. In 2016 37,461 traffic deaths occurred on our nations roads of this number over 5000 were motorcy-cle riders. In Illinois last year 161 motorcycle rider deaths occurred, up 2.8 from prior year, 138 of the 161 riders did not wear helmets. Come visit your friends and shop the many new vendors this year. We planned this event just for you so attend this months Winter Warm Up. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and stay safe this New Years weekend Virgil & Connie Booker

We are now in full Winter mode up north. With temperature this morning of 2 degrees it’s not what we would like see but a fact of Mother Nature. We would like it to be in the 70’s so we could do some riding. But that will have to wait for spring before we get decent riding weather.

Up north we had a white Christmas with about 2 or 3 inches of snow on the ground. Speaking of Christmas, we hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Looking forward to Winter Warm Up on January 19th & 20th in Springfield at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel, hope

you can make it. Got lots of activities planed so everyone can have Fun, see you there.

Illinois District Couple of the Year

Gene & Annette Shields

We have enjoyed our year as Illinois District 2017 Couple of the Year. It has been rewarding and exciting to represent the District at Rallies, chapter meetings and on rides. We have been able to tell people about our experience as District Couple of the Year everywhere we have traveled. We did talk with other motorcyclists on our 50th Wedding Anniversary Cruise. We started our year by celebrating Gene’s 70th Birthday the day we were chosen as the Couple of the Year. Went to many other District Rallies through the year, from Indi-ana, to Tennessee, to Illinois, to Missouri, to Minnesota/North Dakota, to Wisconsin and Region Rally in Iowa. Then we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary just before our daughter was married and we left for 39 days of cruising the South Pacific. We made ports in Hawaii, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Australia then changed ships and went to another port in Australia before going to New Zealand, making many ports there. Then we just celebrated Annette’s birthday followed 2 days later by our daughter’s birthday. Of course we had a few Christmas parties along the way to attend. So it has been very busy around our house. Now we are getting ready for the Illinois Winter Warm Up and meeting the new 2018 District Couple of the Year.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Greetings and salutations form Eastern IL, Well, here we are again. A new year will be here sooner than we would like. Time to start planning all the activi-ties we would like to do for the year, including Winter Warm Up that is coming up January 19

th and 20

th in

Springfield IL. Tom is hoping the weather will be nice, so he can ride the MC and be a “real man” for the second year in a row. The district team has been busy planning activities for everyone to enjoy. Have you made your reservations yet? Since we are on the far side of the state, we don’t get to see everyone on a regular basis. I am looking forward to seeing you there. Hope you can make it. Until next time.

Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year, yes the New Year is here and the bikes are put away. Even in the southern part of IL. it's cold. Soon we will be riding and we'll have warm temps again. But for now, lets think about our up

coming riding season.

With the new changes in GWRRA, we will hopefully accept the new ideas, we will have to change with it. Change comes in many ways during our lives. We change when we get a new job, when we move, when we get married, when we have a family and when we retire. We change sometimes not

even knowing we have changed. But change is here, so lets put our best foot forward and go with it.

With the New Year upon us and every Chapter putting their ride schedule together, don't forget to send me your schedule. GWRRA would like every Chapter to share their rides with other Chapters. We can begin enjoying each other activities and learn how other Chapter do things that might just be different then what you do. Each Chapter does things different then others. What works for your Chapter, might

not work for every Chapter, but you won't know unless you try.

So like I said please send me your rides ([email protected]) when you put them together and we will get them out to all Chapters and hopefully we can enjoy a bigger and better riding season for

2018.

Hope to see you all at our IL. District Winter Warm-up in Springfield on Jan 19-20.

District Educator

Skill Level

How good are your physical riding skills? Have you ever taken a training course to improve your rid-

ing? Consider all the skills you need to ride safely –– are any of them giving you trouble?

Steering quickly

Slowing or stopping quickly

Cornering lines and body position

Lane position and smooth cornering

Throttle control and speed management

Coordination of clutch and throttle

Shifting smoothly

If you doubt your ability in any of these areas, the solution is to set aside time to practice and im-

prove. A training course is the best way to do it, but you can also practice riding techniques on your

own. Spend an hour or two, at least once a month, on an empty parking lot working on your low-

speed turns and braking skills.

You can also work on your skills while riding. Before you head out, ask yourself: “What am I going

to practice today?” Pick one skill at a time such as front brake use, keeping your eyes up, or looking

through turns, and focus on improving that technique.

There is an old saying among police motor officers: “Train at 100 percent, ride at 80 percent.” Your

skill level should always be greater than your comfort level. Training will help you get there.

I just wanted to submit to you a brief introduction.

As your new District MFA Coordinator, I wanted to clear up any confusion that there may be about the program. I am aware that there hasn’t always been the best communication between the chapters and members and this program. I want to do my best to clarify and eliminate that as much as possible.

First, the program is not going to go through a tremendous amount of change, but will remain basically the same. You will still need to take a MFA/CPR class to keep your levels current, if you are a level 3 or higher. As a chapter director or ride coordinator, if there are several your mem-bers who need a class to be current, please schedule with me and I will coordinate a time that will work for everyone. For those basically south of Peoria, I will more than likely conduct your class. Those up north will have Dan Davis and Kris Andre for instructors. Sue Allhands is also available to hold a class for you, if she is in your area.

Books will need to be ordered through me, so I will need a list of your members taking the class, a check from your chapters checking account made out to GWRRA Illinois District and mailed to me at: 26 Brentwood Ct Pontoon Beach IL 62040. Your original roster will still need to be sent to me and I will take care of it from there.

It will be necessary for you to use the approved instructors who have taken the most recent up-date to be current in your levels. This is very important in order not to have any issues later. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this as we move forward with all of the changes in our organization.

As we come to the end of another calendar year, it is always a good time to reflect on the

year just past. Hopefully it has been a good one for you and yours. There are always issues

that we must deal with and it isn’t always easy sometimes. I know for myself personally that

has been the case. Last year was especially difficult with losing Kimi and dealing with that

aspect of my life. But time marches on and we have a choice, do I live in the past or do I

move forward? For me personally, I chose to move on. January at Winter Warm Up I was

honored to be selected as your Individual of the Year and did my best to represent the Dis-

trict and everyone to the best of my ability. Little did I suspect that my life would take such a

dramatic change as it did. To have found someone who would want to spend the rest of their

life with me and to enjoy it as fully as we have tried to do, is beyond my greatest expecta-

tions. Hopefully that will be an encouragement for everyone, that even though, especially

as we get older, circumstances change, we can move forward and continue to live our lives. As we prepare to start another year, it would do us well to get ourselves ready. Karla and I

attended the 7th Annual Motorcycle Winter Conference. Virgil Booker was there with us

also. I had the opportunity to attend last year with Steve Brungard. It is a very interesting

and informative conference and deals with how IDOT is dealing with the issue concerning

motorcycle safety and basically everything dealing with motorcycles. Most attendees are

instructors with the state who teach the BRC at the various universities and local colleges.

A.B.A.T.E. and G.W.R.R.A. Have been invited every year because of their commitment and

teaching also of motorcycle safety. It lasted from Wednesday at noon until Thursday around

3:30 or 4. They always have several speakers at the conference and they always have much

to offer. One of them is Mehdi Nassirpour, PhD, he is the manager of research and Evalua-

tion, Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering at IDOT. He has over 35 years of experi-

ence in conducting research and evaluation studies, 24 of which has been with transporta-

tion safety, traffic records and statistical analysis of highway safety projects. Professor

Nassirpour always has a lot of statistics about motorcycle issues, especially regarding acci-

dents and the causes of them. Invariably it seems that our biggest issues are with ourselves.

Motorcyclists tend to be their own worst enemies. Therefore, education, as well as taking

the riding courses are so important. Making ourselves seen, riding with other traffic and be-

ing safety minded while we are riding, are all very vital to our survival as we ride. No one

will be as concerned are interested in our safety as we ourselves will be.

Page 11: Steve & Diane Gottschalk - GWRRA ILLINOIS DISTRICTgwrra-ildistrict.com/uploads/3/5/1/3/35139771/january...year along with page 1 & 2 of the resume. We would like to have pictures available

Page 11 GWRRA—ILLINOIS DISTRICT

They always display some antique motorcycles for everyone to observe. They are always

interesting to show how, like with everything, motorcycles have evolved over time. This is

especially true with regards to safety features on the bike, as well as with the rider. Some-

thing new this year was the electric motorcycle. They are a sport design but do have some

range and speed. This was very interesting how far they have come with the technology

for these. While the first electric bikes predate the previous century, they haven’t always

had a lot of interest or technology to advance their cause. That certainly is not the case

anymore.

Another speaker was speaking from the PowerSports business. As we well know for our

association, we are a group that is getting older and there is no one really taking our

place. This is true in many aspects of life in many organizations. He addresses this issue

from the business aspect of it. It seems that the millennial generation, which is that group

who were born from 1980-1994, are the largest in history, even surpassing the baby

boomers. Financially speaking, this group will not reach their peak earning age until

2020. However, they already control a large chunk of liquid assets, an amount forecast to

be about $7 trillion by 2020. By 2025, they will control 46% of all U.S. income. They are a

very different generation, being the first completely digital one, living almost entirely on

their smartphones. Because of their lower earning power, they are much more focused on

value rather than loyalty or convenience. They also carry a much greater student loan

debt than their parents did. These are areas that as an organization we would do well to

focus and understand better. As we go into the new year, we need to realize and understand that our world as we have

known it is constantly changing. If we refuse to recognize these changes and realize that

we are not the largest generation anymore, we will cease to exist as an organization. The

younger generation coming in behind us does not have the same view of the world as we

have always had, mainly because of various circumstances, that our own generation has

created. Change is never easy, but perhaps we need to realize that nothing ever stays the

same and we either change with it or get left behind.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and are ready for the changes this New Year is going to bring to the GWRRA family. I am looking forward to those changes. We need to build our family, encourage new people to join our family. When was the last time you asked someone to join you for a social or a ride or just a dinner with your GW family or for an ice cream? We al-ways have fun when this GW family gets together, and there is always room for one or two more. Make it a New Year’s Resolution to ask someone to join you at a GW event. You never now what might spark another’s interest.

When talking about Resolutions, what about learning something new this year. “They” say we should learn something new every day. Can you say that is something you do? I try to do that, and I try to help others to do the same. With the new style of class, let me help you or your chapter bring some training into the non-riding season. Classes should be fun as well as im-parting knowledge, let the University Instructors help you or your chapter. Why not offer classes for more than just your chapter? This is a great way to share knowledge as well learn or give new ideas. What works for your chapter, might just help another chapter get motivated.

Hope to see everyone at Winter Warm-Up. Come and see how much fun you can have, and you just might learn something, or you might go home with a new friend or family member.

Membership Enhancement Coordinator

Happy New Year New Years resolutions are always one of the first things we talk about every year at this time. It is almost something we will never be able to stay with for the next 12 months.

A lot of these resolutions fail because they’re not the right resolutions.

And a resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons:

It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change.

It’s too vague.

You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution.

Your goals should be smart — and SMART.

That’s an acronym coined for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear.

Measurable. This may seem obvious but figuring out how to measure something can be more difficult than you think.

Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals.

Relevant. Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons?

Time-bound. Like “achievable,” the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving

yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller intermediate goals set up along the way.

As Membership Enhancement Coordinators, our job can be the most fun position in the Chapter, but it is one of the most important positions as we are the ones responsible for reaching out to all new mem-bers and prospective members. It is us, MEC’s, who be the ones to bring something unique to the Chap-ter Socials. There many ideas going around and we will be putting together to share by February.

This will be one of my goals for you.

What will your goals be for 2108?
