Stanmore News In Print 29/06/2012 1 Stanmore Students Shine! A big congratulation to all students for their amazing performances on Thursday morning! The audience would definitely agree that our school is filled with many talented students! It was the debut performance for the 2012 Training Band who played ‘Go Tell Aunt Rhodie the half counts are coming’ and ‘Listen To Our Sections’. The Intermediate Band’s ‘Tequila’ got the audience clapping, followed by the Concert Band’s rendition of the Muppet’s playful ‘Mahna Mahna’. The Juniors Recorder Ensemble displayed their hard work with ‘Ode to Joy’ followed by the stately ‘Rondeau’ by the Senior Recorder Ensemble. The Percussion Ensemble was newly formed this year thanks to a wonderful donation of drums from the P&C. They performed their own energetic composition, that they worked on collaboratively in rehearsals with Ms Cheng. The Guitar Ensemble who came together at the end of last year, wowed the audience with their beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Following in the String Family, the Combined Strings showcased their talents with the traditional ‘Drunken Sailor’. The School Choir impressed the school with their beautiful harmonies and range of repertoire when they sang the acapella ‘Bring Me Little Water Sylvie’ and the uplifting ‘Brolga Dance’. The Teacher’s Uke Club performed their version of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ accompanied by Mr Nance on glockenspiel. The Kid’s Ukulele Club had their debut performance joining with the Choir and Teacher’s Uke Club in the famous ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. To end the concert, the Senior Dance Group following their recent performance at the Sydney Region Dance Festival, performed the upbeat ‘Feel the Rhythm!’ Thank You to Mr Nance, Ms Pye, Ms Harris, Ms Poon, Ms Cheng for all your hardwork and the other teachers that made it possible! Social Skill of the Week We teach social skills because general courtesy and good social skills promote social harmony and make students more successful in their relationships with others. Please help us reinforce this important social skill with your child.

    What to Do

Stand where the person can see you, but not too close.

    Look at the person.

If they are speaking, wait until they have finished.

If they are not speaking or when they have finished you can speak.

Say “Excuse me” and use their name.

Ask what you want or give a message.

    Ask once, and then wait.

Thank the person when they have responded.

Help Your Child Settle Into Their New Class.

    From My Desk

I hope all families enjoy the upcoming school holidays.

It is a time for students to recharge their batteries for a new school term. They work very hard during a school term and do need a break to refresh.

For many families it is a time when they can spend some quality time together as a family. For others, work commitments make this difficult but hopefully all of you can find some time to do some family oriented activities.

I know I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my granddaughter who recently turned three.

Some children have been struggling to recover from the persistent viruses that seem to be going around this year, so the break should help them to make a full recovery. I’ve been struggling myself to shake one and hope that the holiday will result in a full recovery.

Unfortunately this meant I missed the Big Night Out. It seems that the night was a great success, both socially and as a fundraiser. Congratulations to the organisers who worked hard to make it a success and thank you to all the parents and staff who supported the event. The P&C play a prominent role in the life of the school, supporting our endeavours with fundraising that benefits all of students but also in building a sense of community for our families. I would like to thank them for their continued good work.

I look forward to seeing everyone bright-eyed and bushy tailed at the beginning of Term 3.
