• Impressments- kidnapping– The British would kidnap US sailors and force

them to serve in the British Navy.

• War Hawks- people who pushed for war• Native Americans teamed up with the British

Canadians to fight against settlers taking the NA’s land

Important Battles• Battle of Horseshoe Bend– Andrew Jackson defeated the Creeks

• Battle of Fort McHenry– Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled

Banner”

• Treaty of Ghent– Ended the war, but didn’t solve any problems

• Battle of New Orleans– Fought after the war ended, Jackson hero!

Land Out West• Land Ordinance of 1785– Set the requirements for new territories to

become states

• Northwest Ordinance– Allowed states to be formed and outlawed slavery

in those states

• Louisiana Purchase– Thomas Jefferson purchased this land from

Napoleon and France.

• Louis and Clark- explored the west

• Monroe Doctrine– James Monroe, stated that the US would not

interfere in the affairs of other countries

• Indian Removal Act (Trail of Tears)– Andrew Jackson (spoils system side note)– Forced Native Americans to move from the

Southeast onto reservations in Oklahoma– Many didn’t make it through the trip
