War of 1812
• Impressments- kidnapping– The British would kidnap US sailors and force
them to serve in the British Navy.
• War Hawks- people who pushed for war• Native Americans teamed up with the British
Canadians to fight against settlers taking the NA’s land
Important Battles• Battle of Horseshoe Bend– Andrew Jackson defeated the Creeks
• Battle of Fort McHenry– Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled
Banner”
• Treaty of Ghent– Ended the war, but didn’t solve any problems
• Battle of New Orleans– Fought after the war ended, Jackson hero!

• British and Americans returned to pre-war boundaries
• Other European nations recognized US as an independent nation
• Nationalism develops in US
Land Out West• Land Ordinance of 1785– Set the requirements for new territories to
