Clarifying the Confusion about Confirmation (part 2) Last Saturday, Bishop Loverde offered the sacrament of Confirmation to more than 200 of our St. Theresa students, and so I thought this would be an opportune moment to speak about some of the misunderstandings surrounding this great sacrament. Last time I wrote on this subject, I talked about what Confirmation is not. This time, let’s conclude the dis-cussion by focusing on what Confirmation is. Confirmation completes and strengthens Baptism – If we understand only one thing about Confirmation, let it be this: Confirmation strengthens everything given in Baptism. In Baptism, we became members of the Church with a mis-sion from God unique to each of us—Confirmation deepens this membership, and equips us for this mission. In Bap-tism, we received the gifts of Faith, Hope, and Charity—Confirmation makes them stronger. Many people believe that Confirmation gives the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (piety, fortitude, wisdom, counsel, understanding, knowledge, fear of the Lord). In truth, these also are given in Baptism and are strengthened in Confirmation. In Baptism, Christ begins his good work in our souls—in Confirmation, we receive the strength to bring it to fulfillment. Confirmation is Pentecost, for you personally – At the feast of Pentecost, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which Christ had promised. Before Pentecost, the Apostles were fearful that they too might be arrested and crucified as Christ was. They gathered in secret, behind closed doors. Then suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise, like a strong driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated. Tongues as of fire appeared which parted and came to rest on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them. (Acts 2:1-4) Before Pentecost, they had been fearful and confused. After Pentecost, they are courageous, boldly proclaiming Christ with insight and effectiveness so great that three thousand were added that very day to their number. Confirmation has a similar effect for each of us. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit strengthens us in ways as unique as each one of us. (The very word, Confirmation comes from the Latin word Confirma, meaning to strengthen.) Speaking personally, I actu-ally felt different from the moment I was confirmed, as though something had strengthened my heart from the inside. This feeling has never gone away. I suppose it was something God needed me to have, for the work he has given me to do. Although this treatment is brief, I hope it helps you understand the basic truths of the great sacrament of Confirmation. God bless you…and St. Theresa, pray for us!

Attention Men of the Parish Are you looking to … •Strengthen your faith, marriage, fam-ily and friendships? •Help a group of Catholic men build a stronger community within St There-sa’s Parish •Get to know some of the men you see at Mass on weekends? And, though pressed for time, open to taking a little time early on some Sat-urday mornings?

If so, please consider the That Man is You (TMIY) program (https://paradisusdei.org). We meet every Sat-urday from 7-8:15am, see an inspiring faith and family-oriented video and engage in short, small-group discus-sions. Sessions are structured so that you can pick and choose if you don’t have time every weekend. Because of COVID, they’re all done virtually.

For last year’s and past TMIY partici-pants, we invite you to resume your attendance as you are able. While we have some who have partici-pated for multiple years, your partici-pation is completely up to you.

We started this year’s TMIY program Sept 12 and plan to run it through April 2021, with a break at Christmas time. It’s not too late.

We are planning a short overview of the program with Q&As on 9/29/20 at 7pm via Zoom. We encourage you to take advantage to learn more and hopefully consider joining us. If inter-ested, please send your contact infor-mation to (Jay Casale): [email protected]
