Battlefield Parkway Scheduled to Re-Open to Motorists

Battlefield Parkway is scheduled to re-open between Russell Branch Parkway and the Potomac Station Shopping Center entrance in late June 2021.

Since construction is still on-going, the road will open to vehicular traffic only. Pedestrian access will not be available until fall.

Once the bridge is open, the traffic signals at the intersection of Cardinal Park Drive and Route 7 will be removed. As a result, current traffic patterns will change. The median crossing of Route 7 at Cardinal Park Drive will be removed. Traffic will be restricted to right in/right out on east-bound Route 7 at Cardinal Park Drive. There will be no access to or from Cardinal Park Drive from westbound Route 7.

Message boards will be in place to direct motorists of the new traffic pattern. The Town will also provide updates to social media on a regular basis. Sign up for traffic alerts at www.leesburgva.gov/alerts.

Initial construction began in Fall 2019. Major roadway construction started in Spring 2020. Battlefield Parkway has been closed since July 2020. The entire project is expected to be completed in November 2021.

Over 2 million square feet of office, retail, commercial, and institutional space, and more than 2,100 new housing units are under development in the Town. These are either under construction,

proposed as a by-right development project, or included in a zoning application.

To the right, is a more descriptive update of three specific projects.

The Shops at Russell Branch is a 61,830 square foot, multi-building retail development adjacent to the existing Lowe’s home improvement store. The development is anchored by a grocery store and will include shops, food, and automotive services. The site is located off

Battlefield Parkway and Route 7.

The ALDI grocery store opened in December 2020 and was the first tenant

to open in the shopping center.

This is the first ALDI location in Leesburg.

It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Project Highlight: Shops at Russell Branch

ALDI

Virginia Tire & AutoVirginia Tire & Auto offers safety and

emission inspections, oil changes, battery services, and tire repairs, along with other

services.

The 8,800 square foot Leesburg location features 12 service bays, state-of-the-art

equipment, and free shuttle services as well as loaner cars for services over $200.

Britewash Autowash is currently under construction.

The 5,700 square foot car wash is

scheduled to open later this summer.

Tuscarora Creek Flood Mitigation and Stream Restoration Project Comes to Completion

A dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, May 15 following the completion of the two-year Tuscarora Creek Restoration and Flood Mitigation project.

The project, located at Brandon Park, off Harrison Street between Catoctin Circle and Shenandoah Street, began in the spring of 2019 and involved two components to help reduce flooding of the adjoining residential properties.

“This project has been a long time coming,” said Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk, referencing the number of flooding issues that would occur during storms. “This was an opportunity to really make changes.

“This was not a meandering creek like it is now. It was a roaring stream and it was not uncommon for it to go over its banks. So this project was really a project of love. “We wanted to make sure that the residents, their houses and their properties, were safe and that they were not disturbed.”

The area has been restored with more than 15,000 trees, plants, and shrubs. A variety of wildlife has also returned including Great Blue Herons, White Egrets, crawfish, and monarch butterflies. “We wanted to make it a project that brought back all the different elements of what makes a stream so important,” Burk said. The entire project was completed in November 2020.

TLC Availability Delayed Until Fall

If you live in an HOA, ask about

accommodations for safe disposal.

Most public parks, including those in the Town

of Leesburg, require proper removal and

disposal of pet waste, and often provide bags

and refuse containers for this purpose.

Town Code requires pet owners to

immediately remove pet waste from public

areas or you could risk a $100 fine.

Production of the organic soil amendment product known as Tuscarora Landscapers Choice (TLC) has been delayed until fall.

Since 2001, the Town of Leesburg Utilities Department has produced the all-natural product for residents who wish to use it for their lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.

TLC is produced at the Town’s bio-solids processing facility. It provides both a valuable source of nutrients that are essential to plant growth and organic matter that enhances soil structure and quality. In the fall, the Town will offer 25 and 50 pounds bags to utility customers for free pickup from the shed in front of the Water Pollution Control Facility located at 1391 Russell Branch Pkwy, SE. Independence Day Celebration Sunday, July 4, 2021

The annual Independence Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m.

The parade will start at Ida Lee Park, travel down King Street, and conclude at Fairfax Street.

The American Originals Fife and Drum Corps, sponsored by Toth Financial, will perform at the intersection of King and Market Street

as a prelude to the parade. Plan to arrive downtown by 9:45 a.m.

Concert and Fireworks at Ida Lee Park Celebrate America’s big day at Ida Lee Park and enjoy a great night of music, food, fireworks, and fun. Gates open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. A food court will be onsite. The largest fireworks show in the region will light up the sky at approximately 9:30 p.m. Choreographed to music, this light show is not to be missed. Parking will be available at the interior lots off Ida Lee Drive, and the festival field parking off King Street.
