GOSPEL SUMMARY

In last week’s Gospel reading, Jesus was able to heal the woman with the hem-orrhage and to raise to life the daughter of Jairus because of the great faith each person possessed. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus is unable to perform any mighty deeds because of the lack of faith of the people in His hometown. He comments, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house” (Mark 6:4).

Mandeville, Jamaica Project July 1 – August 5

(Owensboro Diocese’s Sister Diocese)

The Owensboro Diocese chose to partner in global outreach with the Mandeville Diocese of Jamaica sev-

eral years ago. As a result, parishes throughout the Owensboro Diocese

annually collect and ship containers of specified needs for its sister dio-

cese in Jamaica. Mandeville suffers from unemployment, high illiteracy,

poverty and little opportunity (see bulletin insert for details). In efforts towards self-sufficiency, Diocese of

Mandeville requests help in several areas. Since Cadiz is a beautiful fer-

tile area, St. Stephen’s Parish com-mitted to help provide some basic

gardening tools as requested by Man-deville. Please be generous. Sign up sheets are available in Narthex. Bring

donations to narthex July 1 – August 5.

Nursing Home Outreach

St. Stephen contin-

ues its outreach to area nursing homes with sched-

uled visits on Saturday, July 14 to Barkley Plantation from 1-2 pm, and

Better Senior Living (formerly Trigg Co. Manor) from 2:30-3:30 pm. On

Sunday, July 15 we will be visiting Shady Lawn from 1:30 – 2:30.pm.

We provide a guitarist and simple sheet music to sing along to (talent NOT necessary). Please join in and

make another’s day brighter. Sign up in narthex. Call Jon Prudhomme

(931) 801-9014 or Kathleen Johnson at (270) 564-5821 for more infor-

mation or for carpooling.

St. Henry Feast Day July 13 St. Henry will be celebrating their Feast day beginning with Mass at 10 am which will be followed by a pot-luck brunch as is their tradition. They are asking folks to sign up if you are planning on coming so they know how much food to prepare. The church will supply bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs. They ask for do-nations of other brunch food. Please call 270-474-8058, if you wish to attend the potluck brunch. Hope to see you there!

St. Teresa of Calcutta, Mother Teresa

In the book Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait by Monsignor Leo Maasburg you can read about “Mother Teresa and the ‘EXPRESS NOVE-NA.’” Monsignor wrote how Mother Teresa would pray the Memorare as a novena, since she had a deep love for Our Lady and the Memorare was a favorite prayer. “Whenever she was facing difficult circum-stances, she did not pray this prayer just once. No. She would offer and “express” novena.” It was not for nine days, but nine in a row, followed by a 10th “in thanksgiving, confident that her prayers would be an-swered. She prayed from the heart knowing that God would act… The Quick Novena had one thing in com-mon with the nine-day and even the nine-month Nove-nas: confident pleading for heavenly assistance, as the apostles did for nine days in the upper room ‘with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the women’ (Acts 1:14) while waiting for the promised help of the Holy Spirit.” The Memorare is a simple prayer and we, too could pray it as a novena in our times of need. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

July 8, 2018 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mark 6:1-6 “They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given Him?’”

When a person demonstrates unusual intelli-gence or wisdom, we ask, “Where did they get all that?” And we may be wondering, “Why them and not me?” We tend to ignore the possibility that such people are not only gifted with above average intellect, but that they have an open mind and heart to the truth of the realities they observe and recog-nize new possibilities and the need to change how we think and live. Knowledge is the intellectual ability to understand the world in which we live. Wisdom is the choice to discern the truth and implications of that knowledge. Knowledge is knowing how to build an atomic bomb. Wisdom is understanding why it should not be used. It is the wisdom of Jesus, not His intelligence, that amazed the people of the small village of Nazareth. Jesus observed the world in which He lived and realized the need for change in the way we treat one another and our world. That is wisdom. Jesus was not given wisdom. He chose to be wise. Jesus calls us to be wise. What do we choose?

The Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima

here at St. Stephen’s Parish

The tradition of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue originated in Fatima, where the Blessed Mother appeared to three children in 1917. Since most people cannot make a pilgrimage to Fatima, people welcome the statue into their homes for a week. All that is needed is a welcoming home with an appropriate place for the statue. You are asked to pray the rosary daily as well as some other prayers which will be made available to you. You will have the statue for a week. We will do this until the end of October. The sign-up sheet is located in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Cathy Khang at 270-522-0623.

WORD OF LIFE Gracious Father, I thank you for the mercy you have shown in forgiving my sins and for the peace that comes from being reconciled with you and with your Church.”
