John 14:15-21

“Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me.”

Jesus knew that after He ascended to heaven many would attempt to com-plicate His existence, mission and message. He was aware that from the time of Moses people tried to avoid or deny the nature of God and His simple command to love God and to love others as we love our-selves. He knew that if we can be convinced that love of God and oth-ers is complicated, we would get

discouraged and give up. He anticipated that some would claim to have superior and exclusive knowledge of how to love God in order to gain control over the mind and lives of others. Jesus assured us that loving God by understanding and observing His commandments, and loving others, is not complicated, but it can be difficult. It re-quires that we do right, not just look right; do good, not just feel good. It means we must eliminate evil in our lives and challenge the evil in our world, our community, our work place, our home. That can be inconvenient, unpleasant and risky. And that takes love.

CATECHISM QUESTION OF THE WEEK The Gospel for May 17 is from John 14:15-21

Question: What does Jesus promise us at the hour of His Glorification? (CCC 729)

A) The coming of the Holy Spirit B) Peace and reconciliation of all the people of Israel C) Forgiveness of our sins D) That He Himself will return

The answer is “A” “The coming of the Holy Spirit.”

Paragraph 729—”Only when the hour has arrived for his glorification does Jesus promise the coming of the Holy Spirit, since his Death and Resurrection will fulfill the promise made to the fathers. The Spirit of truth, the other Para-clete, will be given by the Father in answer to Jesus’ prayer; he will be sent by the Father in Jesus’ name; and Jesus will send him from the Father’s side, since he comes from the Father. The Holy Spirit will come and we shall know him; he will be with us for ever; he will remain with us. The Spirit will teach us everything, re-mind us of all that Christ said to us and bear witness to him. The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth and will glorify Christ. He will prove the world wrong about sin.”

The Question for next week,

Gospel for next week (Seventh Sunday of Easter instead of The Ascension of The Lord) is from John 17:1-11

Our Lady of Fatima On May 13, 1917, three children from Fatima Portgual, were tending sheep; Lucia dos Santos, age 10; and her cousins Francisco, age 9; and Jacinta Marta, age 7. The area was known as Cova da Iria (Cove of Peace). After lunch and saying the Rosary they saw a bright light followed by a flash in the clear blue sky. Lucia looked up and saw something clothed in white that appeared brighter than the sun. They were amazed. The lady told them to not be afraid, I will not harm you. Lucia asked where she came from. The lady pointed to the sky and said she came from Heaven. Lucia also asked her what she wanted. She told them that she wanted them to come to this spot for the next six months on the 13th day of each month at the same time. She also told them she would tell them who she was and what she wanted. They were also told to say the Rosary every day to bring peace to the world and the end of the war. Then she disappeared. The chil-dren told their parents and eventually the entire town knew of their suppose sighting. Some were skeptical and others had contempt for the children. On June 13, 1917, the children again saw the flash of light followed by the apparition of Mary. She told Lucia to come next month on the 13th, to pray the Rosary every day, and to learn to read. Mary told Lucia she would take Jacinta & Francisco to Heaven soon, but she would have to stay for some time. The children continued to go to the spot on the 13th of each month through Oct 13. They were continuously asked to say the Rosary. The children were told secrets that would take place. Each month the vision appeared and told them to con-tinue to pray the Rosary and make sacrifice for people to save them from “the fire of Hell”. Before the ap-pearance of the vision in August, the children were kidnapped by the Mayor of the town and threatened with jail and death if they did not reveal the secrets told to them by the “vision”. They did not tell and were eventually let go. At the October sighting, as Mary in the vision had promised, a great miracle hap-pened. It is known as the greatest miracle since the Resurrection—the “Miracle of the Sun”. Mary opened her hands and made them reflect on the sun and as she ascended the reflection of her own light continued to be projected on the sun itself. The two younger chil-dren died in April of 1919 and February 1920. Lucia had other visions during her life. In 1982 in Portgual, Pope John Paul II consecrated the world to Mary at the Fatima shrine in 1982. On May 13, 2017 Jacinta and Francisco were canonized by Pope Francis. Saint John Paul II continued to emphasize the importance of Fati-ma by beautifying Jacinta and Francisco on May 13, 2000. Also in 2000, Pope Benedict XVI began the canonization process of Sister Lucia dos Santos. She died at age 97 in 2005. Our Lady of Fatima is ob-served on May 13 of each year by the Catholic faith.
