GOSPEL SUMMARY

Luke 18:9-14

“Two people went up to the temple area to pray;

one was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.”

The two men did not go into the temple because only priest could go into the tem-ple, and only at certain times of the year. The two men clearly had different attitudes about praying and holiness. The Pharisee studied every word of the law and the prophets, and he observed every minute detail. That was his idea of holiness. And he was in the temple area to brag to God about how well he was doing. And he want-

ed others to see him in the temple area. To him, holiness was observing every minute detail of the law, even if doing so meant he ignored the needs of neighbor and did not love them as he loved himself. The other man was a hated tax collector. He did not have time to learn every letter of the law, and probably did not want to. He knew he was not perfect and was aware of his offenses against God. Jesus tells us that the tax collector, who humbled him-self before God, went home justified, but not the Pharisee, who had exalted himself before others. Jesus is challenging us to consider why we pray, out of pride or humility?

CATECHISM QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Next week’s Gospel is from Luke 19: 1-10 Question: What is Contemplative Prayer? (CCC 2712) A) Thinking about God quietly B) Poor, Humble Surrender to the Lov-

ing Will of God C) Contemplating the universe D) Nightly prayers

NOTE: If your special day is not

acknowledged, please call the office with your information, so we can update our files

All Souls Day: This year All Souls Day is on the

first Saturday in November, Nov. 2. Mass will be held ONLY at St. Henry for the Fir st Saturday and All Souls Day. If the weather permits we will process at the end of Mass to the cemetery for a special blessing. This is a special day where the Church throughout the world remembers our beloved departed. Though your loved ones may not be St. Henry Cemetery, this Mass allows all of us to remember all of our beloved dead.

Workshop on Planning your Funeral Wake and Mass: Father often hears a request for time to

help prepare the Funeral Wake/Visitation and Mass. On Saturday, November 2, after the All Souls Day Mass there will be a workshop offered at St. Henry at 10:15 am and Sunday November 3 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Stephen Parish Hall. There is no cost involved. The workshop will include the Catholic understanding of Death and Burial, the importance of a Wake/Visitation and Funeral Mass and how to plan for these. Handouts and materials will be distributed. If you have any questions contact Fr. Greg or Deacon Randy.

St. Stephens Campaign for BED SHEETS FOR VETS has been temporarily

suspended. With donation dead-line approaching, we were falling far short of our goal. PLUS, holi-

day purchases for Angel Tree, Holi-day Baskets for Needy, and more were stretching pocketbooks too thin this season. We

are securely storing current donations and will resume the campaign in the Spring. For more information: Contact Kathleen Johnson (270) 564-5821.

AMS Collection: The weekend of

November 10 our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Estab-lished by Saint John Paul II in 1985, the AMS is the only U.S. diocese responsible for providing pastoral care to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forc-es, enrolled at a U.S. Military Academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, or working for the fed-eral government beyond U.S. borders—including those from our own parish and diocese. Including families, AMS priests and deacons were approximately 1.8 mil-lion Catholics who hail from 50 states and U.S. territories. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chap-lains are paid for by the U.S. Govern-ment, the AMS does not receive any funding from the government or military for program and administrative costs. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection. Please give generously.

NOTICE: An impromptu meeting for the Ladies

Guild will be October 31st at 1:00 pm. Discussion will be the parish Thanksgiving Dinner. Meeting is for all who can attend and would like to help with the planning of the dinner.

Condolence to Mary Gladis at the passing of her

son, Michael Gladis. Michael passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019. Visitation was Friday, Oct. 25, 2019 at Goodwin Funeral Home. Funeral Mass and burial was Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 at St. Henry in Aurora, KY. A Funeral meal followed the burial in the Parish Hall. Please keep Mary and her family in your pray-ers and pray for the repose of the soul of Michael Gladis.
