Thank You St. Philip Neri for your generosity! In June you donated 451 pounds of food. Donations such as yours allow us to distribute these items to people in need in the Fort Mill Community. In 2016, 82% of the food and personal care items that we distributed came directly from donations of these items. Watch the bulletin each week to see how our faith community supports those in need.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNION ANTIPHON AND WHY ARE WE SINGING IT? Music for mass falls into two categories: the ordinary and the propers. The ordinary consists of parts that don’t change every week: Holy, Mystery of Faith, Lamb of God. The propers are parts that change every week and are particular to a Sunday, Feast or Solemnity: readings, responsorial psalm and antiphons. If you look at the readings in the pew missal you’ll notice an entrance antiphon before the first reading and a communion antiphon after the gospel reading. The communion antiphon is always related to the gospel reading of the day. According to the General Instruction to the Roman Missal (GIRM)- the official directives on how to celebrate mass- singing the antiphon of the day is the preferred text for the communion chant. There are two sources for these texts: the Roman Missal (used for spoken masses) and the Roman Gradual (the official Church songbook- used for sung masses.) This is why the antiphon text in the pew missal does not always match what we sing for the communion antiphon. Prior to Vatican II the Latin propers were always used at all sung masses. So in the spirit of ‘singing the mass’ we choose to use the proper of the day. The antiphons we use most often can be found at www.communionantiphons.org. – Linda Liberty, Director of Music Ministry
