SEMINARIAN FINDS TRUTH IN CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING November 16, 2015

Nicholas Wentworth has always had a mind for social justice, so when he was in high school and questioning the Church’s teachings on issues like abortion and gay marriage, there’s a good chance the thought of becoming a Catholic priest never crossed his mind. In fact, it wasn’t only the Church’s social teachings Wentworth was questioning. He questioned even the true nature of God.

“I sort of had disbelief in the idea of a personal God,” Wentworth said. “I think I knew even at a young age that there had to be some kind of creator, maybe some ‘force’ out there that caused everything to be, but I never had a connection to a personal God.” However, when Wentworth met a seminarian named Joseph Gill, everything changed.

Gill, now a priest in Connecticut, served his pastoral year of seminary at Wentworth’s home parish of St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park. Wentworth took his questions and concerns to Gill, who pushed Wentworth to really investigate his concerns. The more Wentworth read, the more the Truth of Catholic teaching began to sink in.

“I realized, ‘Wow, the Church is actually right!’” Wentworth said. “I realized that God has to be a personal God! Joe really pushed me. He challenged me to think about why the Church teaches certain things. He encouraged me to engage the Church intellectually at that level. “At this point I knew I wanted to be Catholic, I wanted the Faith to be part of my life, but I didn’t know how to incorporate it.”

One step was spending time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Wentworth had a significant realization the first time he went to Adoration.

“I was praying, ‘God, what do you want me to do with my life?’ Out of nowhere, I had a strong, sudden conviction that God was calling me to the priesthood,” he said. “It was so clear, and I had never even thought about it before.”

While supportive of the idea of the priesthood, his parents Michael and Roberta encouraged him to get a four-year degree before considering seminary, so he went to St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., to major in business.

During his second year of college, Wentworth got an internship with the Archdiocese of Baltimore Office of Vocations. There, he got to know the Vocation Director at the time, Fr. Michael DeAscanis, and many of Baltimore’s seminarians. It put the idea of the priesthood front-and-center in Wentworth’s mind.

“I saw all of their relationships with one another,” he said. “I became more and more convinced that there was no way I could continue to discern the priesthood unless I was in seminary at that point.” It was too late to apply for seminary that year, so Wentworth changed majors from business to philosophy, and applied for seminary during his third year at St. John’s. Wentworth is currently in his final year of college seminary at Saint John Paul II Seminary in Washington, D.C.
