“Temperance In All Things” / “Templanza en todas las cosas”

God created the glory of the Heavens and the earth, the plants and animals. In the fullness of time, he created human life in His image and likeness – that is, the image of love and righteousness. Before the sinful fall of life as depicted in Genesis 3, God placed all things in proper order and balance, with harmony and peace. God created the world with free will, placing especially in the heart of every person the natural desire to know, love and serve the Lord. Thus, God gazed upon the world and was “exceedingly pleased” – The Lord looked upon creation and all was “very good.”

Because of sin’s existence in the world as chosen by our spiritual parents of Adam and Eve, God freely gave of himself and entered fully in our existence through Jesus Christ so that in our own sinfulness and broken world, we might discover grace and forgiveness. Through the Holy Spirit, the Lord has bestowed on us seven spiritual graces, including the gift of temperance.

The virtue of temperance or moderation helps us discover balance and harmony. We are meant to live in harmony and in proper relationship with God, one another and to all creation. When we choose not to exercise temperance in all things, we can quickly discover that our lives are not in balance with nature and, that our relationship with God and each other can be disordered.

We are given the freedom to choose friendships and our relationships towards one another amid our journey of life in this world. The letter to the Philippians today encourages us to walk with the friends of virtue: truth, honor, justice, purity and graciousness and love. If we choose these companions, the God of peace with be with us. In doing so, we will be less anxious and thus exercise temperance in our choices. Thus, with Christ in our heart, prompted by choosing well, the Lord can restore our lives and the world to its original image and likeness, that we might be holy and blameless in his sight, to be full of love. In other words, harmony and peace are within our grasp.

If we choose wrongly, against virtue, we can find ourselves walking the path of sin, which includes journeying with pride, anger, lust, envy, gluttony, avarice and sloth. Once we begin to embrace and choose these companions, we are more apt to find that we are creating with our choices a violent and corrupt world that is unbalanced and discord in our relationships with God and one another. as evident in the Gospel passage. Today, we pray for the victims of the Las Vegas senseless random shooting that occurred last week. This incident is an example of evil truly present in our world. Let us pray for an end of evil and a renewal of virtue.

~~~
Dios creó la gloria de los Cielos y la tierra, las plantas y los animales. En la plenitud de los tiempos, creó la vida humana a su imagen y semejanza, es decir, la imagen del amor y la justicia. Antes de la caída pecaminosa de la vida como se muestra en Génesis 3, Dios puso todas las cosas en orden y equilibrio, con armonía y paz. Dios creó el mundo con el libre albedrío, poniendo especialmente en el corazón de cada persona el deseo natural de conocer, amar y servir al Señor. Así, Dios miraba el mundo y estaba "sumamente complacido". El Señor contemplaba la creación y todo era "muy bueno".
Debido a la existencia del pecado en el mundo escogido por nuestros padres espirituales de Adán y Eva, Dios dio libremente a sí mismo y entró plenamente en nuestra existencia a través de Jesucristo para que en nuestro propio pecado y mundo roto pudiéramos descubrir la gracia y el perdón. Por el Espíritu Santo, el Señor nos ha concedido siete gracias espirituales, incluyendo el don de la templanza.
La virtud de la templanza o moderación nos ayuda a descubrir el equilibrio y la armonía. Estamos destinados a vivir en armonía y en relación apropiada con Dios, unos con otros y con toda la creación. Cuando elegimos no ejercer la templanza en todas las cosas, podemos descubrir rápidamente que nuestras vidas no están en equilibrio con la naturaleza y que nuestra relación con Dios y con los demás puede ser desordenada.
Se nos da la libertad de elegir las amistades y nuestras relaciones entre nosotros en medio de nuestro viaje en esta vida en este mundo. La carta a los Filipenses de hoy nos anima a caminar con los amigos de la virtud: verdad, honor, justicia, pureza y gracia y amor. Si elegimos a estos compañeros el Dios de paz estará con nosotros. Al hacerlo, estaremos menos ansiosos y, por tanto, ejercitaremos la templanza en nuestras elecciones. Por lo tanto, con Cristo en nuestro corazón, impulsado por elegir bien, el Señor puede restaurar nuestras vidas y el mundo a su imagen original y semejanza, para que podamos ser santos e irreprensibles a su vista, para estar llenos de amor. En otras palabras, la armonía y la paz están a nuestro alcance.
Si elegimos erróneamente, contra la virtud, podemos encontrarnos caminando el camino del pecado, que incluye viajar con orgullo, ira, lujuria, envidia, glotonería, avaricia y pereza. Una vez que comenzamos a abrazar y elegir a estos compañeros, estamos más aptos para encontrar que estamos creando con nuestras elecciones un mundo violento y corrupto que es desequilibrado y discordia en nuestras relaciones con Dios y unos con otros. como es evidente en el pasaje del Evangelio. Hoy, rezamos por las víctimas del tiroteo sin sentido de Las Vegas que ocurrió la semana pasada. Este incidente es un ejemplo del mal verdaderamente presente en nuestro mundo. Oremos por un fin del mal y una renovación de la virtud. Blessings, Fr. Tim / Bendiciones, Padre Tim
Stewardship of Treasure For the past several weeks, our parish has been focused on the Stewardship of Time & Talent. Now it is time for our Treasure commitment, where we will prayerfully consider how much to give back to God for all he has entrusted to us. You will receive a pledge card in the mail, and we ask you to return it by next weekend, October 14th-15th. God has blessed our parish with a beautiful facility, and many wonderful ministries. We thank you in advance for your support.
Morning/Evening Prayer As you may know, Father Tim will be traveling on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the last 10 days of October. While he is away, we will be praying the Morning or Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours in place of our regular weekday Masses. The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office or the Work of God (Opus Dei), is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. In preparation, Father Tim will be leading Evening Prayer on the Mondays of October 9th & 16th at 5:30pm, prior to the evening Mass, and Morning Prayer on the Tuesdays and Wednesdays of October 10/11 and 17/18 at 8:30am, prior to the morning Mass. Morning and Evening prayer will be led by prayerful lay people during Father Tim’s absence. For more information on the Liturgy of the Hours, please visit usccb.org.
SEPTEMBER 27 – NOVEMBER 5
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. It draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program:
Prayer and fasting Constant vigil Community outreach
The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities … and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ’s resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge. Want to end abortion? If you do, the first thing you must do is pray. Prayer is at the center of 40 Days for Life. During each campaign, we are calling on people of faith across the nation … and around the world … to fall on their knees before the Lord, asking Him to hear our plea and heal our land. Pray outside an abortion facility. Pray at church. Pray at work. Pray in the car. Pray at home with your family. To find a location outside an abortion facility, go to 40daysforlife.com. To pray in front of the abortion clinic in Columbus, GA once a week during the 40 Days for Life, contact Theresa Shane at 309-635-2712.
